    I know this comment is late, but only just discovered the channel. Great to see someone recycling perfectly good bikes rather than see them end up in landfill. As an aside, that little protruding lug on the rear of the cantilever arm is there to allow the brake cable to be folded back out of the way; no need to rely on the brake boss on the fork.

      Ayyy thanks my dude I appreciate that! Ya thanks for the tip, I think a lot of ppl do it that way too. I prefer just the resting method because it avoids putting a hard bend in the cable ! Cheers 🤙

    Aaarrrrrgh!!!! No to white vinegar!!! Try evaporust man. You should be able to buy it at auto stores ‘Supercheap auto’ for example. It’ll cost a bit $80-$100 for 5ltr. It can be reused many many times. Manufacturers claim 1/2 pound of rust per Gallon!!! Mine’s gone dark/black and still works a charm. You can decant the cleaner evaporust from the top layer and discard the rusty gunky layer if it suits you. If you want to see the results look up ‘Rj the bike guy evaporust’ there are a few videos he did about the stuff. Check out the comparison he did with evaporust/ oxalic acid/ white vinegar and another ‘rust converter type product. I was Sold when I watched his vids on it when researching rust removal methods. It doesn’t harm paint, or plastic rubber parts. You can put your hands in it as it’s really safe stuff to use. It’s all I use for rust removal, on my vintage rides/restorations/tidyups🙂👍
    P.S. No I don’t work for evaporust, I just think their product is the bomb for what you are doing. I actually cringed when you said ‘white vinegar’ 😂 its all good. If it works, it works. Nice vids by the way, Cheers, James

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  4 роки тому +1

      James Prangnell hahah I’m glad it was just the white vinegar that made you cringe lol! Thanks James I will definitely give evapo rust a try. I’ve heard good things about it and seen rj vids too! Wondering what type of container you use to store it and if you use a sieve or anything after you’ve used it. I like how it’s super safe and good for the environment too. Thanks for the advice, def will do it next.

    • @bigbadstretch13yrago
      @bigbadstretch13yrago 4 роки тому +1

      I tip my evaporust into an ice cream container for use. I have a small teapot sieve that I can use, and also a large one I got at the reject shop/$2 store... I find that pouring the used evaporust back into a old drink bottle for storage is a good one, and pour the last dirty bit into another container. I keep that for appropriate disposal one day...
      I do like your enviro attitude too man. It’s cool to see you ‘saving’ older bikes and getting them going again. I really find it hard to pass up a bike that’s destined for rubbish or the tip. I tend to do ‘tidy up’s’ on cheaper or free bikes and pass them on to friends or sell on Facebook marketplace. If the bike is more my size (I’m 6’3) and style (I prefer vintage roadies, but have a couple of mtb’s) I will put some more effort in and strip and rebuild the whole bike.
      I have never painted a bike as I love the patina of use on a bike. It shows that it’s been loved, and used. I do like your paint job on your diamondback... it’s cool as man... if your interested too there’s a spray paint that’s enviro friendly called ‘sugar’. It’s a alcohol/water based enamel that holds up well. Check it out too...
      Keep up the vids and the good work man
      😊👍

      James Prangnell thanks man appreciate the info 👍👍 I pretty much do the same thing as you but I’m more into MTBs right now haha. I do have another Peugeot (road bike) that is waiting to get built up so stay tuned for that one! I dig the older style (90s) bikes, and it’s amazing you can almost fix anything up and get it running again. Compared to some of the newer parts - once it’s broken you have to replace it. I respect the design and thought that goes into the engineering of the bikes/group sets back in those days!
      There will definitely be more vids and thanks for support 🙏😊

      @@garysprojectsad find, this old comment of yours and mine back a couple years ago…
      Cool little find, and nice bike too. I see why I was watching this back then. I have been riding a similar era Giant Boulder 3x6 speed around for my rack bike. I have sent you pics of it. It has the panniers you sold to me… you know Gary’s Panniers™️ 😅
      Anyways, keep up the good work😊👍
