It was so refreshing to see someone mention not blowing out the highlights! I far too often see blown out skies and am hoping to soon see a turn around from this trend!
optimists are sick of Pea Soup skies?
Except when shooting film then exposing for the highlights is bad. The video should be more clear that this tip only applies to digital.
If blown highlights bug you, you can take two correct exposures, like in that example select the window panes and layer them in. I like the blown sky look sometimes and it's not any worse than murkiness you get brightening shadows in raw. There's other ways to deal with range: natural reflectors, avoid backlight, or bracket and layer.
short and very informative!!!!. sub immediately
Thanks!
sub pls! there are some words i couldn't hear ;),

Just a tip - faces aren't flat - use your hand as a fist when your looking to see how light falls - gives you a better representation of shadow fall off etc.
Oh no, that let down at 2:54😖
Love the content, the way you bring it and everything, I subscribed.
thank you so much!
You guys. THIS IS AMAZING! Absolutely in love with the way you've done this video - your style is epic! We are photographers from New Zealand and just starting out on UA-cam (video is soooo new to us! haha) jumping in the deep end a wee bit but loving this new creative venture we're setting out on. You guys rock. Super inspiring. x
Thank you so much for the kind words! Great Instagram, by the way! We'd love to visit NZ sometime.
Timothy and Ariana I'm from New Zealand too :)
Ariana I follow you on insta, your photos are so stunning!! I'll never forget your story when you couldn't find the rogue bird in your house hahaha
The biggest mistake is over expectations. As a beginner, i expected my photos to match those of pros. Sometimes this was good to keep me anxious to learning more but it also made me feel kinda discouraged when my photos dint look good or match those of pro photographers. Thanks btw!
I love that these videos are short but packed with great info!
Good shit Mango
Thanks!
Totally agree! they deserve way more subs!
I just found this channel and I love everything about it. On a binge.

haha, thank you!
Love all your videos! They're so beautiful and informative, thanks :)
loved it. very useful thanks
Couldn't agree more with these. I shoot video/film rather than still photography, but pull frames from much of my video work to populate my Instagram handle ( @reelreilly ), so attention to light and directing rather than trying to pose subjects is so critical to what I do. Also, points for use of "jimmy jimmy jam jams." Well-done.
Thanks for the kind words. Dig the color grade you got going on with your vids!
Thanks. I've pretty much uploaded my stuff primarily to Vimeo, so my UA-cam postings have been seriously lacking up until now. I've actually posted a bunch of stuff this morning. I primarily use FilmConvert and Magic Bullet Looks for my grades, as I like grain and a slight faded film look.
damn it you guys are so good
these tips are so valuable, thank you!
Love your content you two
Well done!! I also do the hand trick to find the best light. Great minds...!! @ineszrinski

holy shit i had no idea about the first tip, thanks. @ashton_kutcherdoch
That highlight tip is great! Thank you guys! 👏
Simple. Succinct. Useful. Visually-satisfying. LOVE THIS!
I sure I'm not the only person thinking this, but surely most beginner photographers don't shoot people but landscapes instead, shouldn't the video be more catered towards landscape photography. Sure, lighting and exposure is important in both but, only a small number of photographers are shooting (not) models for a living. Most of us shoot travel shots, or is that just me?
Thomas Kirby that differs by the photographer.
I started and with portraits actually and then occasionally shoot landscapes. I think it just depends on the photographer, you know. They start with the genre of the photo that they love. 😆😆
