There was a show here in the United States call the Joy of Painting with Bob Ross. It was very soothing and educational. I find these longer videos provide a similar soothing and educational balance.
I have a channel on Pluto I think, that's a dedicated channel to Bob. I STILL love watching it.. its similar to meditation from the screwed up world...Peter's videos, tend to sooth me, but over inspire me as well...LOL I never stop looking at my trees and trying to imagine more then I've already done for the season....
You have created a masterpiece, Peter. I much prefer your way of approaching bonsai - not a mainstream, not sticking to rules, not following "I do bonsai the way my master taught me, as his master taught him, as his master taught him, ... I see it all too often in science, and it is simply boring. Your bonsai is like a good jazz. As any art, bonsai cannot be pushed into a square box, art is a free expression on one's state of mind. What you say about threes that they are showing you what they want to become - I just want to burst into cheers. "Haters gonna hate", but I love your work. Please do not stop doing what you are doing and sharing it with the world. Besides many other things, I have been teaching at university for the past 20 years. And, if I may be so bold, I recognize a great teacher when I listen to one; your teaching philosophy resonates with me. Wishing that the pandemic will be over soon; I would love to go to the UK and take a 1-2-1 lesson with you. Love, support and respect from Sweden!
As someone who has never owned a bonsai tree and has learnt everything I know about bonsai solely from Peter's videos, I am in awe of how blasé he is splitting a trunk in two! I would spend 30 mins debating whether to trim off a leaf that's blocking the view of the trunk...
I know what you mean. ALL my trees are basically disasters, and a large part of it is never taking off what probably should be. Much less splitting a trunk. My Tridents look like bushes....LOL . As does most of my collection....I have several bone straight trees, that I have considered, but the lack of knowledge that Peter has, its not something I could take a chance on myself.
@@Blaydrnnnr I'm sure none of your trees are disasters, no matter how they look! Each one represents a step forward in your own personal learning process😌
@@Blaydrnnnr Buy some $7 trees on sale at the local Home Depot type store and experiment, some people think you start on a $1,000 pre-bonsai yamadori, most of us will never have that type of material and a master wouldn't let you touch that for years. These videos, dear Mr. Chan, in which you are as a magician producing real surprises, pieces of art, from nearly out of “nothing”, has become my favourite ones. You told me once “BE BOLD!” -- I will never forget this wise advice! Thank you
Being an arborist I am truly amazed by you splitting the tree in half. I trust you when you say it'll heal up again, due to your sheer knowledge, but I always thought that when you rip the cambium like that, the tree will choke. Would love to see this incredible artpiece once more in the future!
I’m no arborist, but my understanding is he’s left enough on either side for water and nutrients to pass through. It was more like a slice, rather than completely shredding it all the way around
This was a very educational video on what looked like a hopeless pine tree. Trunk splitting, literati style with double branches, and pad wiring. Thanks Herons!
Peter your videos has transformed my point of view of life and business. Honestly getting into bonsais May have been one of the best things that I’ve indulged myself into. I quit my job recently out of college to pursue some business opportunities in real estate and I think bonsai principles (although I still know very little of) requires a lot of patience and letting time work for you, which coincides with business and success. I’ve learned so many life lessons through your videos and tutorials of bonsais. Thank you for the videos and I hope to meet you one day. From New Jersey, USA.
Thank you.... 🙏 😔 🙏 Dr. Chan, it was so educational watching you "dance" with the "ballerinas" as you "taught" them their new "opera". But they seemed to add their own bit as they became what I would call, "the jazz ballet interpretation". I think this is one of your classics. I really appreciate your knowledge and teaching style. Dr. Chan, you mentioned some critics, please continue to do what we would say here in the U. S., back in the 1970's, "DO yo' thang'". Teaching us and assisting tree to become a great piece of YOUR Bonsai Art. The final form of that piece of ART will be completed by the tree itself, that is what it look like. And that will be quite different from what we see now. We see a rehearsal, with no costumes, let's wait for the first curtain. 🙏😔🙏I must add a special thank you to and a note of esteem to the cameaperson, the editor and formater. Absolutely amazing how much difference you can make to a trees appearance just by tilting the root ball slightly in the pot. Loving your work as always Peter. Thanks for another great informative video.
Hi Peter, I have my two granddaughters here every Sunday, so I have to watch your show in the evening. I have been watching your videos for a year and a half now and you never fail to amaze me! This was an awesome demonstration and the changes you made talking to us and yourself, ruminating what you were going to do do a bit at at a time shows us all how you got your 21 gold medals at the Chelsea flower show. I applaud you! Take care.
Thanks Peter, this gives me great hope, I have a double trunk Douglas Fir I collected last Nov from a Volcano on a $10 Christmas tree permit and the trunk is very straight, it's 7' tall now and back budding like crazy, hopefully next year I can get some movement into it but just happy right now it's still alive.
Great transformation...glad you kept both trunks..At the begining I thought you was going to lose the bigger trunk and work with the small one. Sunday Breakfast club ! Cheers Peter.
What a beautiful transformation ... one has to see this to believe it... Looking forward to visiting Heron's Bonsai during my next visit to UK .. thank you Peter.
I believe the trees grew tall so that you had the opportunity to change it to the masterpiece you created. All things happen for a reason, I believe. Thank you!
Now this really shows your capabilities, imagination, Bonsai know-how, and showing all what an open-mind to new and different thoughts and ideas can bring about. To look at before and after, one would think that one is looking at two different trees. Fabulous! Thank-you!
I have seen you do similar splitting on a different tree. Good reminder of the fact that solutions can be more extreme with experience and the right knowledge(of species). Thank you for showing the possibilities. Really enjoyed this!
This man is the only reason I got into bonsai, amazing. It proves you don’t need lots of money to create beautiful tree. That said I hope One day I will be able to afford a herons tree
I didn't know, until now, that watching and listening to a REAL master could make my eyes all leaky... thank you, good Sir. AND thank you You Tube for making it possible.
This isnt my favourite kind of tree or style, but I still learned things, so the result of the project is immaterial. All of the things Peter did today are transferable, it was just WAY easier to see him work.
It would be great if, when Peter says "if you'd compare this to what the tree originally looked like", a picture of the original view would be inserted into the video. Or at least show before/after views at the end of the videos as you did for some time in the past.
Amazing! I enjoyed this so much! It really keeps reminding me to not be bound by an idea, and to also really push the limits and not be scared of the tree! Thank you, Peter!
You sir are a creative magician. Instead of taking something special and making it disappear to nothing, you take nothing and turn it into something special! ;)
Great video as ever, I to thought to just use the secondary branch but you have created some thing better by using both trunks with movement, looks like a peace of Chinese calligraphy. Thanks Peter.
Bravo Master Chan....I tend to always look at trees and try to see what might be possible, not that I have the knowledge to execute it. This is a gorgeous example of finding the hidden gem, just waiting to be shown....But I fear I may have to stop watching until after dark, because each time you work, I tend to go out and start rethinking 80% of my collection...LOL..
Really beautiful. I have a very straight Scots pine. It is sitting in its pot terrorising me. I may now have the courage to have a timid try out. Many thanks Peter.
Wonderful as always! Thank you for sharing that with us. When I first saw that tree I was immediately excited to see what you'd do with it. I wasn't let down at all. 😍
Bravo, Bravo, Bravo! I know your thoughts of using a drum pot for this tree in the future, but can I imply that you might like it with a lotus pot as well. this might match the tree's flow with the pot. I might be wrong about this and the dum pot might make it look majestically stronger 🤔 regardless what style of pot you choose I love it.
Sometimes it seems you have to have strong hands to work with that wire to form the trees into the correct shape. Amazing actually. Afraid to hear it crack. But then we forget it is in the hands of a Master. Absolutely amazing transformation.
Camera can't ever give us the three dimensional or in-depth perception of the curve, twists and bends 😭. Wish we could all see them in real life. What a Bunjin/Literati indeed, bravo Peter 👍. Thx for sharing and Cheers 🌲.
I would not have thought to tilt the 90 degree angle--what an interesting little tree it has become! An interesting note: I know a family that has a gargantuan "Native American trail marker" pine on their Willamette Valley property, with a massive 90 degree angle--the branch pointed to an ancient village. There is another pine pointing the same direction a few miles from them. Their pine was manipulated 100's of years ago and has grown so long that it now holds a lovely tiny house, complete with a wood stove and deck above the massive angle.
Its like those people that paint upside down then spin it right way up, I didn’t really get it until it was tilted and then the whole thing came together and made sense
This has quickly become my Sunday morning ritual, get up, make a coffee, watch Peter. Bliss.
Same here in norway 👊
Same here in Ireland too 👊
Very similar in my household in Canada.
So welcome to the inaugural meeting of the "Herons Sunday Coffee Club" 😂 Also known as PCAS (Peter Chan Appreciation Society) 👍
