    I think a Hat in Time is especially impressive because it is gears for breakfasts FIRST game and it already has such great quality, im really looking forward to a hat in time (and the free official additional content that awaits us) but what im even more excited is what they will come up with in the future, i really hope that if they make another game that they stick to 3D platformers, the team seems very passionate about their work and has an extreme amount of potential, possibly the best indie dev ive ever seen so far.
    I love everything i hear and have played (from the beta) so far and i am happy to see 3D platformers having a potential return.

      In terms of writing, art direction, and overall game design, they seem to have nailed it on their first go. However, the presentation shows some definite signs that this is a first time effort. Several of the animations are slightly stilted, there are numerous instances of clipping during cutscenes, the lighting is sometimes off, and there a few brief moments when the camera spazzes out or goes somewhere it wasn't supposed to.
      It's one of those occasions when these hiccups can be overlooked simply because of how much charm and fun oozes out. And I'm sure a lot of these minor issues can be patched up in updates.

    • @TheRealPentigan
      @TheRealPentigan 7 років тому +6

      The roughness can be patched out and also just fixed entirely for whatever second outing the studio decides to go for. Personally I'm hoping it's more Hat in Time because frick this is all so adorable and we need more of it.

    • @Kraedt
      @Kraedt 7 років тому +4

      To be fair, there are AAA games that have the same issues, and sometimes even *worse* issues. I don't think you can tell a game is first effort based on bugs, because *every* game has bugs that slip through the cracks and they can be patched over time.

      To be fair a lot of game especially today have really bad/unnecessary cutscene. Especially game that give you a 15 minutes cutscene before even trying to make you interested in the universe/plot.

    • @SLRModShop
      @SLRModShop 2 роки тому +1

      ^-^ I skip all cutscenes in 99.9% of the games. I really don't care for stories. And they are totally optional now with all the hand-holding. I even play the fallout games with only reading the choices that I'm given and guessing which one is the correct one. FF7, Alan Wake, Blue Stinger, Omikron, Bioshock 1, all the Broken Sword series and Quantum Break are the only games I can claim to have cared about what was going on, story-wise. There is a bad guy, you're the good guy, you end up saving the world by killing stuff. You really don't have to read to get it =)

    Been following A Hat in Time since late 2012 and backed it when the Kickstarter was announced. The game's development used to only be comprised of a small UA-cam channel with short clips, but they have come VERY far since then, especially the game's director who only made TF2 mods at the time.
    Easy to say, this is my most anticipated video game of all time. Played about 40 hours of the Alpha + Beta messing around Mafia Town alone.

    Looks interesting. Hadnt heard of it before. Its a shame that outside of Nintendo there are so few platformers. Varied takes really spice it up and as ingenious as Nintendo can be, many of the Yoshi, Kirby and NSMB games feel very samey and Mario 3d games are about 5 years apart.

    • @arcaedonluminos666
      @arcaedonluminos666 7 років тому +8

      If we're talking 3D Platformers, then Mario is the only series from Nintendo I can think of that has had releases within this decade. I think PlayStation has actually had more these past few years, with Sly Cooper, Tearaway, Knack, Ratchet & Clank and Crash Bandicoot.

    • @niespeludo
      @niespeludo 7 років тому +8

      Arcaedon Luminos you're actually on to something. PlayStation has had more colectathon 3D platformers in the last few years. While Nintendo has the classic Mario, Kirby, Yoshi platformers (I wish we had a new Wario 3D Adventure) Sony has had the return of Sly, Crash and still has Ratchet and Clank who never died. I miss Gex, I wish it made a comeback.

    • @arcaedonluminos666

      While they revived CRASH, they've pretty much abandoned Jak & Daxter and Sly Cooper. CRASH is a 3D Platformer, but it's so linear, it doesn't fit within the open world collectathon genre. Here's hoping they revive the Sly series and the Jak series.

    Wow. This is the first time in a while I've stopped a video because I want to experience this for myself. While everyone was yammering on about Yooka-Laylee, I was wondering what happened to this project; now I can see that what was happening was that it was getting really good.

    sounds incredible really. "Not innovating" honestly doesn't sound like that harsh of a criticism. I wanna hear an opinion from someone who didn't like the game, see what their complaints were and if they hold any water for me. right now this seems like a day one ourchase, which never happens for me.

      Well personally i never got to really enjoy the 3d platformer
      I DID have mario 64 but being a kid from like 7-10 i never really understood the world or such, it was just like a puzzle box where i was only able to get into a few levels out of. I feel i got a full experience of game out of Hat in time and im much wanting a sequal or more 3d platforming like it, as opposed to my experience om mario 64 which i just kinda felt was weird.

    This is perhaps the Shovel Knight of 3D platformers. It's cool to see how much polish there is considering how the dev tema behind it wasn't as big as other Triple A titles have. Hope to see more from Gears for Breakfast. :)

    Hey King K!
    I'm currently an artist in the game industry and I grew up loving 3D action platformers!
    I've watched many of your videos at this point, and I really enjoy your perspective on design. It's refreshing to see passion for 3D platformers - new and old!
    I recently played Yooka-Laylee and it tickled my Banjo-Kazooie obsession, but it felt strange after a while. Seeing this review really makes me want to try 'A Hat in Time' soon!
    I find it interesting that these days most 3D platformers are reserved to Nintendo or indy-like start ups. Would love to see more contemporary sparks in the genre aside from remasters.
    Thanks for the awesome content!

    Man what is it with indie offerings and their fixation on cute tiny dogs lately?
    Thank you very much for this, so refreshing to see a platformer done right and the contrast to Yooka Laylee, especially, is appreciated. If you don't mind me asking, how's the turning radius for this game on Hat Girl? Yooka had a really wide turn around a central point which I found made finesse in platforming rather difficult. Compare to, say, Mario Sunshine, where a turn could be altered with Mario's sideways flip jump... thing, or Banjo who turned more tightly. From what I can tell, it seems to feel good, but I just wanted to make sure from someone who really knows the genre how tight it is.
    Otherwise... seriously, thank you. This did a LOT to dispel thoughts and doubts I had on the game and showed off enticing parts excellently without making me feel like the game was spoiled.

      Going off of what KingK said, and my experience with the Beta and the recent Speedrunning Event build, Hat Kid's movement is very satisfying and she feels really nice to control. I can't compare it to Banjo Kazooie, as I've never played those games, but I WILL say it's fairly similar to Sunshine, with a bit more floatiness like KingK said. It does feel really good to play and control feels really responsive and tight. Being a former Sunshine speedrunner, it did take me a little bit of time to get used to the differences in movement, but it only took roughly 30 minutes before it felt natural and comfortable.

    • @jarerarebear1765

      Hat in Time is similar to Shovel Knight in that it's trying to be its own thing rather than just a spiritual successor to a more famous and forgotten franchise. Yooka-Laylee is to Banjo-Kazooie, as Mighty No. 9 is to Mega Man.

    I'm going to add that the boss fights have intelligent difficulty. I thought they were very difficult (not great at video games. What can I say) but the more you die the more they shorten the fight and cut out redundant bits. It's still the same boss fight but with less hits. It's a good way to keep the less skilled players from getting stuck and/or frustrated but still preserving the core boss fight. It was very cool for me - a person who usually gets frustrated to the point of tears when presented with a difficult challenge and only relieved the frustrating challenge is over upon defeating it (rather than excited and feeling accomplished upon defeating said challenge). Just another touch to add.

    Just beat A Hat in Time. While it may not have pushed the genre further like you said in the video, it is by far the best game I have played in the past couple years. I don't think I have enjoyed a game this much since Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus. I am so excited for when mod tools become available and people begin making custom levels. On top of that I have never understood speedrunning or why it is exciting but I have so thoroughly fallen in love with this game to the point that I could see myself replaying it over and over to try and beat my previous records. Thank you so much for pointing me onto this game as I had never heard of it till I found your video. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read my wall of text hope you all have a wonderful day.

    I just wanna say one thing: A Hat in Time isn't anything game-changing because it's not trying to be. It's trying to be a good video game, and does that and goes far beyond. While it might not change the gaming industry as we know it, like Undertale did, I think it could make a good stepping stone for something that will.

    This feels like the game we wanted Yooka-Laylee to be. I had a blast with Yooka-Laylee, but there were definitely issues with it. A Hat In Time completely surpasses it in just how fun it is. I love the old-school 3D platformers of the N64 and Gamecube, but this completely blows them out of the water because of the sheer fluidity of movement. Every minute has been a joy, and I can't wait to play more of it.

I honestly thought the devs intended you to dash through the gates, and I glitched the game by crouch-dashing through the gates right after pressing the button, which left me stuck after getting the Token. Honestly my only complaint with this game is that it felt too short. Maybe it’s just because I played it a ton over the past two days, but I really wished there could be at least ONE more world to play around in.
    Other than that, I really really enjoyed the game. It was fun to just simply move around and I was surprised at how well they did boss fights (Snatcher was my favourite)
    Also, that queen’s mansion was terrifying

    I first heard about it a bit after the Kickstarter finished. I grew up on Mario Sunshine myself, and this seemed so much like it, I was really excited. I got worried after the reception to Yooka-Laylee that this game would get the same treatment, but everything I've seen thus far still makes me feel confident about this game, including your review. I'll be really looking forward to playing it later this week!

    I don't know if you thought the lack of voice acting was a glitch or not, but I can assure you that every line I the game is voice acted. I have 100% completed the game and the lines you bring up, in my version, do have voice acting... some of the time. You see, I think it's a glitch that has to do with the graphics settings of all things. I have my game run on the lowest setting because I don't have a Dedicated GPU, and when I play all the voices are there, but any video or other on any setting higher is missing them for whatever reason. Just something I noticed.

    Because of this review, I'm definitely going to buy A Hat in Time. I've been looking for a fun and charming platformer; while there are some on Steam, they usually have one quality or the other. A Hat in Time seems to have both. Your review is thorough and the gameplay shown was amazing. I feel like I finally found what I was looking for. Thanks

    I've been waiting so long for this game and I'm so glad it's coming out soon. I don't mind that it's a homage to older games and doesn't really push boundaries. Sonic Mania showed us you don't need to reinvent the wheel to make a fantastic game, as long as you know what makes the genre good. From your review, A Hat in Time seems to be doing just that for 3D platformers and I'm completely onboard for it.

    I feel weird and happy in these times. I've been following both a hat in time and cuphead from the moment they started kickstarters (a hat in time I followed for even longer) and now this year they're releasing. Like these guys are about my age and when they started their particular projects I thought to myself...well someone also wants this besides me. Now these guys have made it a reality. I don't mind this game being. Abit derivative in some aspects, you can leave innovation to Mario games, I just need something polished that controls like a dream.

    I think in the case of older game styles that no one is making anymore, they don't need to push the boundaries further. Advancing and going beyond isn't what people upset at the lack of platformers wanted. All it needed was to polish up an old style and make it with quality, because more of a good game is still a good game. Were the market completely over saturated THEN you need to do something new to stand out, but right now it's the opposite.

    How is the mouse and keyboard support? I'm one of those PC players that
    actually prefers M&KB for 3rd person platformers over a Steam
    controller or XB1 controller. I tried to use my M&KB for
    Yooka-Laylee but the poor camera controls before that one patch forced
    me to switch over to my XB1 controller.

    I feel that A Hat In Time is basically what Yooka Laylee wanted to be. Super charming, great music (that Time Rift music though), surprisingly funny, solid Sunshine style control. Hope it does well for the devs during the three or so weeks until Super Mario Odyssey comes out were it'll probably get lost in the hype unfortunately.

    i'd agree with you half way on it being a start I feel it pushed collectathons a fair bit but at the same time it's short and doesn't go very far with it's ideas the mission with queen (I forget how to spell her name) being the prime example of that it's a great idea for a mission but it's really short and easy if you know what you're doing there isn't much exploration as the castle/mansion is really small and you don't have to avoid the queen very much I feel this game played it too safe which is a shame because I would have loved to see this game go further than it could've with more time pieces that maybe could've been hidden in the hub more levels and more bosses but with that said I love a hat in time it did a lot of things that I thought were very interesting and things that I would love to see in other collectathons like having a story tie together the missions you do inside of each individual world

    Well they'll no doubt have a much bigger budget for the inevitable sequel, which could innovate a lot more.
    Much like Banjo Kazooie to Tooie actually. The first, as good as it was, didn't really stray much from the formula of Mario 64 outside of a few improvements like staying in the level with the main collectable, whereas Tooie did a whole bunch of things to shake it up, some of which became a new standard of the genre from then on. It would be fitting for this series to do the same, since Yooka-Laylee kind of failed.

    this game brightened my day every time i've booted it up, it's an absolute joy, and it still occupies my mind even after completing it 100%, which is something only my all time favs manage to do.
    i'm not even that big a fan of the genre, i played most of the major 3d platformer classics but only ever finished banjo kazooie. if you like platformers even a tiny bit then this game is a must get.

    I like what I hear so far, but I don't think the video touched on the structure of the game too much.
    Is it a level by level basis where you complete an objective, then move on to the next level without pause, or is it like Super Mario 64 where you have a selection of levels that you can take your leisure to go through as you desire? Or is it something entirely different?

    • @KingKlonoa

      YAq It's both, you may have missed me talking about it. Maybe that's why you don't think I went into enough detail lol. Alpine Skyline is Banjo style, but Mafia Town is Sunshine style. Some are hybrids.

      Thank you for the reply. I suppose what I meant to ask is how you go from level to level. Like, is there some central hub ala Delfino Plaza, where you go to some point in the map and enter a particular level? I'm assuming it's the case, but I'd just like confirmation if it is.

    • @TheRealPentigan
      @TheRealPentigan 7 років тому +1

      Your spaceship is a hub, no combat or platforming happens there but it's how you get to various levels. Some worlds have a level by level progression where each level unlocks the next but the mountain world is a single open-ended mission and the spooky forest unlocks levels in branching paths.

    There are some things I think it does innovate the powers for platforming and otherwise are layered and diverse. the closest up till this point was banjo and even then we didnt have nearly as many powers and the available powers were not all usable in the same levels.

    The problems with the game pale in comparison to it's greatest strength:
    It's fun.
    It's JUST FUN.
    The great graphics are nice an all, but they really serve to frame the fun.
    The music is an absolute joy, especially when it brings back memories of all the fun.
    The controls serve solely for fun.
    The level design makes moving around fun.
    The writing is fun.
    The GAME is fun.
    Screw analysis of "oh does this further the techn-" no, heck that.
    The "oh but the voice acting-" it doesn't matter in the slightest.
    It's fun. Does it need anything else?

    Ah, just the kind of game I wanted A Hat in Time to be. Yeah i'll be honest, I do like Yooka Laylee but I think it's just good. Just that though. It does some things right but it also could improve as well. A Hat In Time i'll be honest, looks like a better game than Yooka Laylee. I'm honestly thinking of getting this soon since A. I love 3D Collectathon Platformers and B. I love the art style. It's so freaking cute. Idk, call me a sucker for cuteness but Hat Girl is adorable. Top that with the fact it looks fun, yeah i'm definitely getting this game. Overall, nice review man.
