To put it Bluntly It comes with too many caveats and a high price tag. Definitely a niche camera. This is by Matt Granger. Sony a9 III - a Niche $6000 24mp camera. After taking a closer look. I have to agree. First I can't leave my 45 mp I love to crop. I have never had any one say anything about a bent bat are an egg shape ball, it's never been an issue to my publishers. This might be a good camera if your photographing or filming UFO's, I just can't justify the extra cost to have bragging rights when I don't need them.
Its great tech but the noise/dr trade off isnt worth it for the price imo. Super fast readout like the z9 and a1 seem to be the sweetspot. Either way progress is progress and hopefully pushes the competition. Thanks for the video Lee.
it has nominally less dynamic range, but in terms of what is usable, exposure latitude, it has a full 9 stops which makes it the best mirrorless camera in the world, beating the A1 and Z9 in terms of dynamic range you can actually change edit in post, not just what the sensor can capture. It has more exposure lattitude than the Red Komodo x, it ties with the Red V Raptor, and the only digital camera to beat it is the Arri Alexa 35. Its global shutter and the best usable dynamic range of any camera you can buy.
The comment has been made many times about 'this technology will trickle down' - The A9 1 sensor tech is still yet to trickle down into consumer level tech... I can't see this sensor tech in A9III reaching anything outside of flagship systems tbh... I can't even see it in a flagship APSC system. If it ever does hit APSC, it will be in at least 8yrs time I'd say. But this type of tech won't be in anything like an A7VI or anything...
@@LeeZavitz I actually don’t believe it will… I believe Smart Phones and AI will further kill off the lower end camera market and full frame professional global shutters will remain at flagship level. This tech will appear in Sony FX3 mark 3 maybe… The A1 sensor is still amazing in my view, in some ways better than this A9III sensor and that technology isn’t even hinted at reaching the next A7 level… So I really don’t see the global shutter going much wider spread than this… I have more hope that the global shutter will hit an iPhone in 3yrs than I would it ever touching a consumer and prosumer camera body…
@@leo_hoang There are several IMX sensors with global shutters already. Personally I don't really need to see in in smartphones. Manufacturers rarely fully utilize the sensor. Look at Sony's QHDR mode on their quad bayer sensors. Almost no smartphone makes used that mode. Same goes for different binning modes. Especially for videography on Android having RAW video in that QHDR mode helps much more than a global shutter. Obviously newer sensors with better DR and all will be very important but global shutter on its own not so much.
@@techtt6213 which sensors are you referring too that exist already? I’m sure Global Shutters exist in other cameras already, but nothing on the consumer end? Or at least nothing that performs well on the consumer end? The use case and need for the Global shutter isn’t there for the most part, so I don’t believe it would trickle down far, but my point on mentioning the smartphone is that I can see Apple using it as a marketing spec in a few years as camera phones are otherwise stale. They talked recently about raw video in iPhone and who really needs that?
@@leo_hoang Ah sorry missed the consumer part. Although technically they are apsc and m4/3 sensors so could be made for consumer market. But yeah I fully agree with you it would be mostly marketing. Anywho I don't see the iPhone as a benchmark in mobile photography anyway. RAW video is pretty great, I use it all the time on my Pixel. Point is that the app in question has a built-in renderer so I can easily output to SDR/HDR H.265/264 video, or ProRes/LOG files. Allows for image quality that the iPhone cannot even come close to
Thank you for this review! Any chance to get sample RAW file from that figure skating thing? I'm considering this camera specifically for figure skating photography and it was a nice surprise to see skating featured in the review.
How do you feel about with portrait photography? I’m looking for an all around camera I can shoot sports with and portraits with occasional videos. I’m between this and the A1.
@@LeeZavitz thanks for the info. I guess I should have prefaced it by saying one of these would be my main body and the a7iv would be my second body. Right now I only use 2 cameras for wedding videography trying to build my photo business and am starting out with a gig with the local minor league baseball team. Not sure if it would change any thought processes.
@@LeeZavitz It would take them a pretty long time, but if they put it in the FX3 body then I'm sold. I actually think that the "softer" image from the camera might make it look more "cinematic". Can't wait to try it out.
Appreciate it, Its been very slow growth in the last year. I just thought I would say it in a video incase people aren't subscribed but occasionally watch videos from me!
Theres a serious problem. Ive been subscribed to you for a very long time but your videos NEVER show in my subscription feed. I think this began when u got hacked a few years ago. I only find out you have a new video from twitter or sometimes youtube home feed. You might want to call your youtube rep if you have one
Was excited to see you review this!!!
The new set looks dope af too
It’s coming along 🤘🏼
Thank you for your thoughts. The autofocus performance on the ice skater was incredibly compelling!
And that was with an old lens. It’s way better with Sony newer lenses that have quad xd linear af motors!

You don’t think they would ever do a global shutter camera for under $3500? Anything is possible

I love your watch. what model is it?
It’s a Casio A120WE model: amzn.to/49ZvhuM
I thought the A7S III also has no crop at 4K 120FPS, right? So the A9 III wouldn't be the first sony camera without crop
A7siii has a tiny crop in 4K 120p. It’s like 1.1x
How do you feel about with portrait photography? I’m looking for an all around camera I can shoot sports with and portraits with occasional videos.

it’s probably one of the best for sports, in terms of portraits the A1 might be better thanks to 50mp sensor

What is the best sony camera for portrait photography recently?
A7RV
I want this camera inside a ZV-E1 body with ZV-E1 price and with much much better screen quality and doesn't overheat.

How much present and future technology will you ever need, in order to make you a better photographer/videographer...
The better the tech the easier it makes our job. But It won’t make you a better photographer / filmmaker
