Last year I bought the Japanese-spec version of the Mazda2, which is called Demio. Mine is the DY series which preceded the DE/DH model you have. The powertrain is a 1.5 litre with 5 speed manual. The DY differs from yours mainly in the body. It's very functional, being much more boxy and upright. The rear seat slides fore/aft, folds with 50/50 split, and the base can tumble fold (when I get to replace the broken plastic strap). It has a robust folding parcel shelf also. The third brake light housing is not flush like yours, but is made of good thick material so doesn't rattle. The windows don't clatter when partially open. Being right hand drive there is no issue with a cramped pedal box. The rear windscreen washer is central and the wiper has continuous or intermittent modes. There is no cruise control, but to be honest, this is of little benefit in my country because of tight, winding and hilly roads, and drivers who don't keep to constant speeds on flat straight roads. The only dislike I had was the pathetic single tone diaphragm horn, but this has been replaced by airhorns. Once the cheap Chinese tyres the car is shod with are replaced with a good set of Michelins, the car will be just fine. Thanks for the videos.
For those of you out there that have a Sport model and a craving for cruise, Rostra makes an aftermarket kit you can install. Not my favorite project I’ve done on the car but it works.
What I dislike is the empty gap on the centre console near the transmission. Could have added a storage there. And also no cup holder at all at the back row, even the handgrips are absent. Weak steering rack is also a problem. What I like is the exterior design, fun, and the engine response.
The accelerator pedal is no issue for me, Australia, like Japan is a RHD market. Plus Mazda Australian decided the equip the base models (at least with the 2010 facelift series) with the radio & cruise control button-equipped steering wheel. Mine is a 2012 Mazda2 Neo Hatch with manual transmission.

I'm in the UK the mazda sport here is top of the range, multi function steering wheel, cruise, foglights, body kit, the tamura model is similar looking but 1.3 and no cruise. The rear wiper wash is a pain, I find the fuel filler lever on the floor a bit odd, but the car is nippy and super reliable and no cambelts, turbos to worry about. It could benefit from a temperature gauge. But I guess mazda just wanted a hassle free simple car that looked good when they made it, it's nice looking car compared to other hatchbacks of the era.

Matt P: I hear a rattle somewhere on the front passenger side too. From the driver's seat, it sounds like it's coming from the far right vent in the dash. Sound/bass doesn't affect it.. bumpy roads don't make a difference.. but it is loud and drives me absolutely crazy!
Have you added the touring steering wheel yet? I saw your video and would love to see how that works as your dislike of no cruise is my one main issue. I am not finding too much info on the swapping. Thanks!
+Josh Craig I only run the wiper when it's raining enough to obscure the window. If the window is dirty, however, it stays that way until it rains or I wash the car. Haha
What about the round airconditioning vents that loosens with time flaps around? Anybody have that? My car also makes the annoying clicks when pressing down the clutch. I had it replaced but it comes back eventually. Also, the cover of the mirror in the front sun visor loosens partially flaps down.
It’s exactly the same but with a slightly longer stroke, I believe. As long as it fits in the engine bay of the 3 the same way and the MAF sensors is the same, I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work.
Never did. I’m not sure wether or not the controls can be made to work in a sport, so there’s no reason to spend the money for buttons that may or may not work. Until I get a definitive answer on that, I stick with stock.
Would the cruise control work with a even older model? Say i put a steering wheel from a 2011 into a 2010, is that all i need or would i need to get a kit for cruise control?
@@HiroshimaSpirit alright thanks though :) im guessing probably not, as the cheaper models typically have everything the expensive ones have, they just arnt wired up. But likely to be different throughout year models 🤔
Im in Aus. I have s mazda 2. Mine is a base model mazda neo 2012 and it does have cruise control. The most annoying thing about it is when the rear windows are down and youre travelling at about 100kmh there is a terrible wind vibration noise thats unbearable, you have to lift the rear windows up its that bad. The only thing i wish it had is a 6th gear for long highway trips, as its geared fairly low.
Maybe you’ve just got to search and get lucky to find it. Not many people wrecking their 2s nearby, probably. That’s the unfortunate thing about car parts sometimes.
The lack of usable cubbies, the rear headrests must be down or you're blind at 4 o'clock position. And the absolute worst is the display. Idiot lights instead of gauges and LCD radio that blacks out with sunglasses on. Oh... rattling sun visor clips, too. Still my favorite car, and I've had many.
i finally fixed it yesterday, what a difference! I removed the clip, made a squared hole in a thick foam paper cut to measure, then I put it between the roof sky and the clip with a bit off all purpose glue. for the back plastic I put some liquid rubber around the part, let it dry and now all the rattle it's gone!
Even many high performance sports cars don’t have full instrumentation these days and you expected to get this in an econo-box subcompact people mover? Furthermore, the coolant temperature gages that have come on virtually all cars made over the past 40 years are no better than an idiot light anyway. Not only do they not tell you the actually coolant temperature but they are non-linear to boot. In other words, the needle just moves to the middle point when the engine reaches normal operating temperature and then it doesn’t start moving upward again until the temperature is at least 30 degrees above normal. So basically an idiot light would be just as useful. Believe me, I would love it if all cars had at least an oil pressure gage and a proper linear coolant temp gage that told you your actual coolant temperature at all times but that’s just not going to happen.
I own a mazda 2 and it keeps me satisfied . Anyway here are my dislikes : _The button of the trunk is tiny , made of rubber or plastic . Bad weather can make it crack , , water infiltrates causing short circuit and the trunk not to function . I have had this problem . Why electrical opening ? a simple mechanical handle is way better . _The window handle on the rear doors is positioned low . You can touch it accidentally with your legs or your objects , making the window to go down slightly .
The thing i really hate about this car is the fact that you have to replace the cam followers to adjust the valve clearance .Unlike a toyota where you simply replace the shims without having to remove the camshaft in order to do so . It cost $420 for the cam followers as unfortunate i could only swap around a couple of the existing ones . Also i had to wait 5 weeks for them to come from japan as they did not stock the ones i needed at the dealer or the national parts distributor ( In Australia ).
That sounds like your personal experience rather than a common issue. Any kind of valvetrain adjustment isn’t required maintenance like in a fussy Honda or something as far as I can surmise. One of our club members here is a master mechanic and many of us have over 100k miles and I’ve never heard of anyone needing to make those kind of adjustments.
+Mariam Ge If you're in the United States, it's easy. A Touring has extra accessories like fog lights, steering wheel audio controls, cruise control, alloy wheels, etc. A sport is just the bare essentials. As far as other markets, they had even more trim levels with different names compared to the US market, the details of which I am unsure.
DaedalusZero thanks ! guess I have the sport model it's super basic. I live in Canada so close enough haha. just found your video. it's great. I havent seen many UA-cam channels regarding people owning Mazda 2's. I didn't even know it existed till this year when I bought it.
Has anyone had this problem with a mazda 2 i’ve never had it any other car but i’ve recently got a mazda 2 and for some reason the clutch is just so weird I have to be extremely extremely gentle otherwise it will jerk whilst moving off or even when i’m gentle it will do it. Took it to the mechanic clutch is fine, but i don’t understand i’ve never had any manual car do this to me ever. Is it just me or the mazda 2 clutch is a bit different to other cars? I’m very confused.
I’m not there to try it, so I can’t tell you definitively. Every car is a bit different. Maybe it has an aftermarket clutch? A stock clutch in a 2 requires little effort and is incredibly smooth to operate. Sounds like you just have to adapt? Idk, I can’t diagnose a car through a comments section.
Got a Mazda 2 takara last month and I gotta be honest, only thing I dislike is the fact that it’s slow as balls. But as a first car it’s great, 84hp keeps the insurance cost low
Really like your videos! My biggest hate with my 2013 Mazda 2 is the audible click when depressing and releasing the clutch pedal, I can also feel the movement through my foot when it clicks. Possibly return spring on clutch pedal, or worn parts around that clutch pedal spring assembly. Have you or your friends experienced this and what was the fix? Thanks Greg from New Zealand,
Greg, I have exactly the same clutch pedal clicking issue on a 2010 model. Main Mazda dealer lubed it up, but a month or 2 later it's back the way it was again...
I have this car, I love this car, but we need to figure out that back sprayer... terrible.... there has to be some swappable part so that it mists in a cone AT LEAST, right now it just a slow, pathetic dribble.
If you're in a position where you can keep an eye on it, you can use the fluid more efficiently by timing it carefully. Engage the sprayer just as the tip of the wiper passes the nozzle on the downstroke, and the washer fluid will collect against the wiper blade. The blade then smoothly distributes the fluid along the window on the upstroke. Kludgy, but it works.
How is your car delivering the power to the street? The wheels of my Mazda 2 will spin relatively quick even though I have the 75 hp version. o.o It´s so much fun to let expensive cars back on the traffic light. But on some streets even a normal start will result in squaking tires.
Well, the Sport really isn't all that sporty with the 105 horsepower. Why couldn't we get something like a 150 horsepower hotter version? Mazda has made some questionable decisions, but I love the brand still.
The ABS trips off too easily in this thing. I live in a town with shitty roads, and 50/50 chance it goes off as I'm coming to a stop and pass over cracked tarmac. Little annoying.
i have the 2012 model. what i don't like. the most basic dashboard. (no fuel percentage...just a 1980s most basic LCD with square dots that is used as a fuel gauge and no average mpg) this thing is twice as loud as my previous vehicle (1998 chevy blazer). i have to turn the radio on full blast to drown out the noise while doing 65mph. i live in Texas and during the summer, the AC at full blast barely keeps it cool. luckily im the only one in the car most of the time, so i just point every vent towards me. lol what was the deal with the manual air circulation switch? never seen that "feature" in a car before.
+imsobored04 You must have a Sport trim. The Touring trim displays all kinds of extra info in the cluster like average mpg, fuel range, outside temp, etc. I personally don't have a problem with a/c cooling the car or with wind noise. Even with a modified exhaust, I have no trouble hearing the radio at highway speeds. As far as the vent/recirc switch, thaysbjust how it was designed, I suppose. I'm perfectly fine with manually selecting which to use. It's a $13k economy car, not a Lexus.
yeah i have the sport version. driving on the highway feels like you might have a window that is cracked open. i don't have a problem with the vent switch either. just weird. i understand that it's a $13k car so i never really had a problem with it. it's a cheap sub-compact car. quality is good enough. i did find it surprising that Side air-bags came with it.
cheap car. tiny. 30-35 miles/gallon. side airbags included. crash test ratings are pretty good. i've had the car for 4.5yrs now. only thing i've had to replace is the battery (i like to sit in my car with the radio on during my lunch break. probably why it died on me). hopefully i'll get another 4.5yrs before i see that check engine light on.
imsobored04 Just because it's cheap doesn't make it bad...then there are mods you can do to change the way the car drives, mine easily does 100 on the highway. People actually want to race me all the time because they can't believe my little car moves the way it does...I just added stainless steel brake lines and OMG the stopping power is incredible!
Funny. You 5 dislikes don't apply to my 2012 auto trans Mazda 2. But I do have one big one. It's the push button to open the trunk. In the winters here we can hit minus 40 and that pretty much makes that push button a real chore, if you can get it to work at all. And for the record I do have cruize control but still haven't used it yet on this vehicle. Longest road trip was only 5 hours long and due to all the construction patches on the highway I never turned on the cruise control.
Slow.7 seconds. Really, it might be a couple of tenths quicker to 60 than it was stock with all the mods. I’m not trying to win any drag races, so I haven’t cared to measure.
@@HiroshimaSpirit I've never tested mine on a true flat surface but I figured it was around 7 seconds. If I'm not mistaken on paper the car is supposed to be like 9 or ten so it's still not bad. Your car looks sweet though.
Thanks! Considering that manufacturers and the press will absolutely abuse a given test car (far beyond what an owner is typically capable of or willing to do) to get the best possible 0-60 time, I don’t take much stock in it. The 2 has an advertised time of like 9.7 seconds. For an average person who isn’t going to abuse their car, round that up to 10-ish seconds. It’s just a number, and the car is way more than the advertised specs, especially the acceleration times.
@@HiroshimaSpirit Sometimes I swear it's more like 6 seconds and some change. I know it's not breaking records but if this were forty years ago, we'd be competing professionally. We nicknamed our Mazda 2 zippy, which seems to be common for little Mazda's.
Something I really don't like is that it likes to idle in about 550 to 650 rpm when is in Drive. I've checked EVERYTHING and everyone (incluiding the dealer and other owners) tells me that it is normal... the vibrations tho... everything rattles... feels like a japanese Harley Davidson.
My dislikes of the Mazda 2: -Auto transmission sucks for fuel economy, shifts are rubbery and gross feeling -Suspension has way too much rebound resulting in poor ride quality -Handling is incredibly overhyped and unremarkable, understeers very early and doesn't like to lift-off oversteer -Paint is seriously _thin_ and chips easily despite looking nice -Radio wiring seems poorly done, it cuts out when I hit a large bump or turn hard Personally I wouldn't get another 2, and wouldn't recommend it to a friend unless it was the manual for a good deal. I'd get a used Pontiac Vibe or Golf 2.5 before one of these.
-You bought the auto. 🤷🏼♂️ -Sounds like the dampers are shot. -Most cars understeer horribly on stock suspension. Drive better, THEN throw a $100 rear torsion bar on the same car and get back to me. -The paint is thin on Mazdas, for sure. -Radios are known to be hit or miss in these. All of these issues are correctable except the automatic trans, but buying an ancient design 4-speed and expecting performance is a failure of judgement. The rest is objectively cheaper and better handling than a worse Matrix or an out of warranty German car, but to each their own.
These cars are so cheap I would just try to buy a manual one before going to the trouble of swapping everything. I own one of each and while the automatic is boring, the car itself is still fun and tossable. If I had no other choice but to have an automatic, I would have still modified it, but differently and to a lesser degree.
@@HiroshimaSpirit I am getting just about ready to tackle my first oil change, but I think there are a few mods I might try on this car, I didn't think there was much to do for a mazda 2 before I saw your channel

+NickelNDiminIt It was suggested that I just pull the panel off, but it hasn't bothered me lately. Perhaps when it starts up again. Haha
I hear an intermittent rattle in the switch housing for the ceiling light, I also keep hearing rattle in the passenger side door. So many rattles. x_x
+Matt P Mine has a couple of intermittent rattles, but nothing that drives me crazy. I didn't expect much for $13k. If it was a more expensive car, then I'd be pissed. Haha
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
It’s more trouble than it’s worth. I have an aftermarket steering wheel now
Darn I really want cruise control!
Good looooord, I had the rear wiper/sprayer. I don't even bother using them.
My vents are jacked, too. I plan to pop the dog bone connecting the blades and shim them for some friction to keep them from closing on their own.
I wonder if this kit will fit on the mazda 3 1.6 is basicaly the same engine...
It’s exactly the same but with a slightly longer stroke, I believe. As long as it fits in the engine bay of the 3 the same way and the MAF sensors is the same, I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work.
Do you have any link from were you got the air intake kit.? Thanks alot and great content...
Did you end up putting a touring steering wheel on? What was the total cost?
Can’t speak for non-US cars (aka pre-2011).
@@HiroshimaSpirit alright thanks though :) im guessing probably not, as the cheaper models typically have everything the expensive ones have, they just arnt wired up. But likely to be different throughout year models 🤔
Window washer nozzles can be adjusted to spray at a different angle. 😅
Make a video about it then.
at least are small issue for me , the only i want to see issues on this model car is on the engine, and how much the cost of the parts
The only thing i wish it had is a 6th gear for long highway trips, as its geared fairly low.
every car its the same thing with the back windows down.!
Mazda is the best
my windows don't rattle on my 2014 Mazda 2 when I go over bumps.
The arch back trunk is not popping open how can it be fixed
I'm trying to find the front bumper grill, the sporty on with fog light. Any idea where can I find it
I would probably check eBay. It all depends on where you’re located. Different markets got different front bumper shapes.

@@HiroshimaSpirit
Australia, tried ebay & wreckers no one has it.
Anyway here are my dislikes :
_The button of the trunk is tiny , made of rubber or plastic .
Do these model mazda 2s have a under engine tray?
I answered on Instagram, but for anyone else who might be curious, no, they do not.
how do i tell of my Mazda 2 is tell touring model or sport model.?
+Mariam Ge In Canada, they were called GX and GS. Sounds like you've got a GX. Thanks for watching! ✌🏻
DaedalusZero Can you do a video install for a rear torsion bar (it's supposed to attach behind the rear bumper)
+David Johnson I've already done one. Check out my Mazda2 playlist. 👍🏻
Ive a 2009 2 1.5 litre model & it has cruise control , Its a RHD model , Dont use it much though myself
Thanks
Greg from New Zealand,
Lube the spring with some grease. 👍🏻
Greg, I have exactly the same clutch pedal clicking issue on a 2010 model. Main Mazda dealer lubed it up, but a month or 2 later it's back the way it was again...
I'm considering buying a Mazda 2. It's a good thing I never use cruise control.
I have this car, I love this car, but we need to figure out that back sprayer... terrible.... there has to be some swappable part so that it mists in a cone AT LEAST, right now it just a slow, pathetic dribble.
Let me know when you figure it out! Haha
Most of us just don’t bother with it and wait for rain before using the wiper.
Thanks for the tip. :)
agree
How is your car delivering the power to the street? The wheels of my Mazda 2 will spin relatively quick even though I have the 75 hp version. o.o It´s so much fun to let expensive cars back on the traffic light. But on some streets even a normal start will result in squaking tires.
Better tires would help here. I’m on 180TW Bridgestone Potenzas and can go WOT even in corners with no wheel spin.
i have it too i hate nothing about it the only problem i have is that i bought it in bad condition
I have the mazda 2 sport, more powerful with a more sporty look and more features!
+Martin John Overseas cars got a lot more features than we did here in the US, for sure.
Well, the Sport really isn't all that sporty with the 105 horsepower. Why couldn't we get something like a 150 horsepower hotter version? Mazda has made some questionable decisions, but I love the brand still.
Just add a spoiler. After that, you could hardly tell if it's there.
How about when braking while you go over a pothole uneven pavement and the brakes vibrate horrendously.
+Frank Cortez That's the ABS at work. Probably working a little too hard, but still. I just avoid potholes altogether, braking or not.
The ABS trips off too easily in this thing. I live in a town with shitty roads, and 50/50 chance it goes off as I'm coming to a stop and pass over cracked tarmac. Little annoying.
Frank Cortez same issue. It's definitely overkill!
ABS and ESP interventions are fairly loud and feedbacky (
+Digi20 ABS definitely. I've never triggered the stability control though, and I've gotten the car a little sideways many times. lol
i have the 2012 model.
what i don't like.
the most basic dashboard. (no fuel percentage...just a 1980s most basic LCD with square dots that is used as a fuel gauge and no average mpg)
this thing is twice as loud as my previous vehicle (1998 chevy blazer). i have to turn the radio on full blast to drown out the noise while doing 65mph.
i live in Texas and during the summer, the AC at full blast barely keeps it cool. luckily im the only one in the car most of the time, so i just point every vent towards me. lol
what was the deal with the manual air circulation switch? never seen that "feature" in a car before.
+imsobored04 It's all you could ever need in a car. Safe, reliable, and inexpensive. I didn't buy two of them because they're bad, right? Haha
cheap car.
KewlQT in finland the bloody button doesn't even work at -20 degrees XD
Have you zero'd to sixty in it yet? I'd love to hear what you clocked.
I get what you mean. A fun, lightweight car with good gearing will always feel faster than it is.
I have the MY2018 DJ and they fixed all of these
My Mazda 2 alignment is off , it pulls to the right.
Go get it aligned, then.
got a mazda ad on this lol
Finally! Shut it down, boys! Mission accomplished! 💪🏻
Time for new engine and trans mounts.
Have you tried cleaning the EGR valve?
@@KT_One I mean, it has 36k miles... It´s a 2014 tho, so maybe ur right
@@HiroshimaSpirit Yes!
My dislikes of the Mazda 2:
-Auto transmission sucks for fuel economy, shifts are rubbery and gross feeling
-Suspension has way too much rebound resulting in poor ride quality
-Handling is incredibly overhyped and unremarkable, understeers very early and doesn't like to lift-off oversteer
-Paint is seriously _thin_ and chips easily despite looking nice
-Radio wiring seems poorly done, it cuts out when I hit a large bump or turn hard
Personally I wouldn't get another 2, and wouldn't recommend it to a friend unless it was the manual for a good deal. I'd get a used Pontiac Vibe or Golf 2.5 before one of these.
-You bought the auto. 🤷🏼♂️
-Sounds like the dampers are shot.
I bet if you had the automatic the transmission would be on top of the list, I wish I could drive stick :(
These cars are so cheap I would just try to buy a manual one before going to the trouble of swapping everything.
Even with what I’ve done and still want to do, it isn’t a whole lot compared to more popular cars, but there’s plenty to satisfy any enthusiast.
Manual is not that hard. Try it.
I have one and my tactometer goes off when I barely accelerate lmfao
Did he just put his foot with no shoes on foot button😂😂
Review a 97 Chevy Cavalier
+Daniel Perez Stambaugh Don't know anybody with one. Not certain there are even any left on the road. lol I can't remember the last time I saw a Cavalier.
I want to move my drivers seat an inch to the right. Right hand drive.
Wait till you have to change the catalytic converter, total nightmare…
You sound like a serial complainer typical American. I have the same car and have NO ISSUE such a beautiful car. ❤
I would hardly call this complaining. I kept this car for years and loved it. Relax, just because I’m from the U.S. doesn’t mean I’m an entitled shitbag. It’s ok to not LOVE every bit of something, because nothing is perfect for everyone.
Very annoying rocking camera action other wise good videos he does.
