This sounds like Plantar Fasciitis. I have had this for over 20 years. After going to a specialist, he recommended stretching and wearing good shoes. He recommended Vionic. Big changes. I do have a flare up once in awhile, but nothing like before. I only wear shoes by Vionic, and do stretching when needed. My daughter had it really bad for a few years. She had injections, over 25 years ago and she doesn’t have problems much at all. Wearing good shoes does really make a difference. Glad to hear you are doing better.

One major (silly) change I had to make when I had Plantar Fasciitis, was to stretch my feet UP in my first morning stretch when I wake up, instead of pointing them down. It’s a habit now.

Sam has Achilles tendon issues, not Planar Fasciitis, as you know. Both conditions are symptoms of an underlying problem. Tendonitis of any type will sound similar. Sam probably has a very large calf muscles so doing any ladder work can generate tendon pain.

Another thing you can try to help eliminate inflammation is to eliminate processed sugars, and also honey, maple, corn syrup and agave, if you haven't already. I eliminated sugar almost entirely when I went on a restrictive diet for awhile, and so many problems went away, including some pretty bad knee pain. Now, if I have something with sugar in it, I can tell, because I wake up the next morning with nerve pain in my arms. Sugar is a hard one, its in everything, and sometimes you dont know it, especially if you ever eat out. Its in a lot of sauces, condiments, dressings, some seasonings, and nearly every single processed food, even in the cures in most bacons. Its not a problem for everyone, but it sure was for me, and I only figured it out by accident. Whatever you do, wishing you all the luck.

As a big man myself I have struggled with hip/knee and ankle pain for quite a while, Good quality footwear and dropping weight has certainly helped and I didn't have to change my diet, I just stopped eating after 5pm and that has helped me drop 42lbs in 9 months, I would choose surgery as a last resort because nobody likes being off their feet for too long especially when they have a homestead to run.
If you have a flare-up and decide for the surgery we will still be here watching old videos to keep a wage going in to the home untill you feel you are fit enough to start making content again, either way I hope you get sorted real soon.

Indeed. I’m a larger size woman and have struggled with back, knee and feet problems. I used to wear flip flops all the time. Not anymore! I’m careful about what I put on my feet and actively trying to drop weight. I notice with each pound I either gain or lose I feel the difference in my joints.

I'm not a doctor, but I have had issues with my achilles tendons being too tight. I sat behind the wheel of a big rig for 25 years. When I retired from driving, I started doing small engine repair and building metal storage units. Like you, if I did anything requiring being on a ladder I could not hardly walk the next week because the backs of my heels felt like they were on fire. What I ended up doing for over a year was every day, several times per day, I would stand facing a wall 2-3 feet away, and put my hands flat against the wall and lean into it while keeping my feet flat on the floor. When I first started I could not lean very far before I felt my tendons stretching and starting to hurt. But the more I did this "exercise" the further I could lean into the wall without hurting. I'm not certain this will help you, but I'd say it can't hurt to try it.

I'm sending prayers for you Sam. My daughter had similar problems when she was 12. She had surgery took a long time for the tough tissue to heal. But that surgery caused more problems further down the line for her. Which resulted in her having more surgery later in her life. She finally asked how many more surgeries will I have to have. The reply was this will never be fixed. So she decided to stop having surgeries on her foot. After much time of being off her feet and getting the tissue to heal she has found she's doing much better. She's now in her late 40's . She's careful not to step on rocks and other hard surfaces.

Sam, I'm Sam also. Personal and professional advice, as a new homesteader myself(year 3) and an RN of 15 years. The first year on our new homestead I dropped about 40 pounds but I also had carpal tunnel flairs so bad I only slept a few hours a night for months, so I feel your pain. The weight loss helped me the most for my over-all heath. This may sound funny but keep a journal about your feet and activities for the next few months kind of like you told us about in the video. You might find a trend. Quality footwear is a must! A $250 pair of boots or $25,000 surgery?

Yes…weight may not be the original cause of problems, but losing weight will always help most health problems; especially feet…it has helped several health issues i have…and for some foot problems i had HOKA brand shoes are awesome for that…they cost about 160.00 but have made me be able to walk farther and longer than i would be able to, otherwise. I am still working on the weight loss, and wont stop, because extra pounds; even 20 or so can make any health issue harder to deal with…best of foot luck to Sam

Thanks for sharing what is really none of our business. Managing the problem without surgery is a good move in my opinion. If you are successful it seems like the only remaining question will be whether the pain in the right foot when walking is sufficiently "tolerable" to avoid surgery. I like the way you are approaching this issue. Best of luck.

There's also stretching/yoga that you can go to lengthen those tendons. Start small with chair yoga focusing on the lower extremities. There's great videos on UA-cam. It's worth a shot to try before agreeing to invasive surgery

Hey friends, Pastor Fred here in Rockwood, TN. Surgery? Have had 31 so far, and may have another 1 or 2 before the end of the month. I don't have your issues, but have had 4 1/4 toes removed, and may loose the last 2 on the right foot soon. Diabetic... ugh... The majority of surgeries are from birth anomalies, born with intestines formed in knots, etc. Surgeries are things you have to take seriously. 2 years ago, I agreed to let them amputate my right leg up above my calf, but the surgeon talked me out of it, and saved my foot and leg (and had to have new skin grown in lab to replace what I lost). Anyway, stay vigilant and focused, I appreciate what you do!!

Sam, I have had plantar fasciitis for about 13 years now. I don't get flare ups too often because it all came down to wearing shoes. I rarely go barefoot or just socks. 1 day of that and I'm in pain for a week or so. Cutting back on sugar helps tremendously, learned that when I used to go to the gym. I never got sore if I pushed sugar away. If I were you, it is winter, perfect timing for surgery. I think I'd do the surgery instead of being in pain later and recovering when the weather is great and you need to get things done around the homestead. Just my opinion and we all saw how much pain you were in. I'd hate to see you go through that again. Much love to you and the family!

I'm so excited, this is great news. These puzzles can usually be solved by the victim (better than a doc) cause you're with yourself 24/7. Once you stop whimpering in pain and set your mind in problem-solving mode it's pretty clear that inflammation is a self inflicted issue in most instances. Praying you can avoid surgery and please don't rule out alternative physical therapy like yoga or swimming. Whatever it takes to stretch those muscles.

Hi, I've never commented before but just wanted to affirm you in your belief that something you were taking or eating could be a major contributor to your flair ups. I had plantar fasciitis for a couple of years (which I know is different but still an inflammation issue). I started having tightness elsewhere in my body and slowly realized it occurred after eating corn. About two weeks after I quit eating corn not only did the other tightness stop, but to my utter and complete disbelief, my plantar fasciitis completely cleared up. Mainstream Western medicine would never have connected my food sensitivity to my foot problems. I was so glad that I paid attention and listened to what my body was telling me because it made such a huge difference to my quality of life. Praying that your foot continues to feel better.

One recommendation that was given to me by physical therapy was to never put your feet on the floor without shoes on, slippers, flip flops, something with a cushion so your feet are not putting the pressure against those tendons, ligaments and bone (that includes not even a taking a few steps to the bathroom at night without the cushion of shoes). Please try this it helped me tremendously. Good luck!

Yes yes yes 👍 I had heel Spurs issue and pain for 5 years spent lots of $$$ on other ways to help then someone said try a boot or sock at night while sleeping and wear it every night for 4 months and it will be healed , it worked that’s what I did but I was not told I had too short or too long tendons … the boot was strange wearing at night but it felt wonderful while wearing it actually , gave so much relief,it was a special planter fasciitis boot or you can use the sock type even but the boot felt the best for comfort and relief… of course then have to do all the other things , no bare feet walking , wear Orthotics , well support shoes (I have one weak ankle that was broken and healed wrong ) and I have been good for over 10 years ,, but keep on top of it amd do some stretches for calf and foot as much as you can but just a soft stretch , just my journey from severe pain to pain free and no surgery 👏👏👏👏😌😌😌😌

It often happens one surgery leads to another, another, etc. I had back surgery in 2001, and within a year had more disc problems and was told another surgery was necessary. It took months to recover from the first surgery, and I just was not willing to go thru another more invasive surgery. I live with back pain every day, but I’ve learned how to manage it, when to not tax my back, and when to rest it. That other surgery still looms, but for now I’m still managing. I say all this to let you know you’re right to take your time, research options, do it your way. As you said, surgery will always be an option, but there just might be another way of managing your foot pain that’s not invasive. Good on you, Sam… your head is on right about this. 👍😊

I've always been one to believe in holistic medicine before medical doctors I have nothing against medical doctors I see one constantly but I'm also diabetic from cancer and chemo and all of that ask your doctor before you decide not to do the surgery I have heel spurs they are a pain I don't know about the tendons is there a way to stretch them naturally I know if you wear flip flops all the time your foot stays in that position so it doesn't get to move and you have to move it and if you don't it will cause you problems later hence foot surgery. Seriously ask the doctor about natural healing stretching the tendons naturally is there a way to do it I'm glad you're not in pain anymore I understand that pain. I'm in pain constantly because I have an extra vertebrae in my back and I basically sit on my tailbone. Take care stay blessed love the videos love the family.

I had that same thing after partial knee replacements. My legs were going bow legged and after my legs were straight, my tendons were tighter.. I still walked with a cane after surgery due to my heal excruciating pain. I was in such pain and feel for you!!!
0:03 I did mention it to my surgeon and saw another spect where I was diagnosed with the Achilles tendon problem.
I did go to PT I also wore heel lifts that really helped!
Best of luck no matter the path you take!

I had to have my Achilles Tendon removed and replaced on my left foot due to a bone spur devouring the tendon.
It was good to get it repaired as my tendon was torn in half just waiting to pop.
    Be praying for you recovery.

I'm glad you're feeling better, Sam. Way more glad you're still in touch with your surgeon about this. Sounds like you've thought things through and if this new course of action puts your mind at rest....then, perhaps, it's best for you. Now, I'm gonna sound like your grandmother.....take regular vitamins and eat a well balanced diet....after all if there's anything you don't want it's a big, angry immune system.......trust me. A nice, normal, balanced immune system is the way to go. .....and a good pair of supportive work boots )

I have had the same thing. Fortunately, I had a great orthopedist that asked me how I position my foot when I sleep, do I sleep with my toes pointing down or do I sleep with my toes level which allows that tendon in your heal to stretch. I found that I slept with my toes down, similar to a ballet dancer. The Doc told me that I had to sleep with my toes pushed as far up as possible, and I did some exercises before bed that helped stretched out before bed. I rotated my foot up and down until I could feel that tendon stretching in my calf. No more problems. Like one other commentator said it is "Plantar Fasciitis"...I have not had any heel problems for years and I am 71 and still very active and work around the house all the time with no heel pain....

Sam I so glad you shared your painfull problem with us .. or me I totally understand your issue , since I suffered for 5 years and spent tons of $$$ trying to find a fix , I did hear something about wearing a special type boot at night that keeps your foot flexed all night , when I put it on at night I felt instant relief and comfort even , then during the day wear orthotics in all shoes and get well supporting shoes and a sandal with an arch support and straps to keep foot from shifting around a heel cup is the best … anyway I’m a happy camper 95 percent of the time , since I am a woman and like cute no supporting shoes but my feet don’t so good shoes won ….bless you on your journey for feet relief to be able to walk and get on with life .. blessings to you and family ..Love your videos , learn so much also ,, and shout out to Angela , you go girl !!!!! 💖👏😌😁

I've had similar issues, didn't go to the Dr. though, just grinned and dealt with it. Did a few exercises from UA-cam for relief.
I ended up fasting for 13 days and realized the pain was gone a few weeks after the fast.

Sam. Best thing is to try to break yourself. Honestly. Good idea, use it and see if you can cause an issue. Then you'll know for sure. I worked in tennis shoes for years, and in the last 10 I find I if I wear high quality high support boots my feet hurt very little, so footwear is a big contributor. Just use your best judgement, (or your wife's because we all know that's who forces us to the doctor anyway), and keep moving forward.
    Best to you Sam.

Like you, I have been substantially overweight several times during my life - sometimes as much as 50 or more pounds overweight. Every time, I developed foot, ankle, knee issues and bursitis - very painful - around joints, even elbows and shoulders, and other issues. Every time I lost that excess weight, most of those problems went away. Some of that improvement was surely due to less wear and tear due to the extra weight, and some may have been due to establishing a healthier diet. I understand that you are not me, and that your issues may be quite different from mine, but I suspect (as you probably do also) that achieving a healthier weight profile might result in improvements in your quality of life. I do so enjoy following your channels and, like many of your followers, feel some real affection for you and your family. I wish the very best for you!

That is one thing my youngest who is in her twenties and I have always been very careful with what shoes we wear. I have had problems with my feet. Now one of my sons has had problems and he went to a doctor and the doctor told him be more careful. We all wear Haflinger slippers around the house. The doctor said too many people walked around on hard surfaces without a good shoe or slipper. Feet are not made to be pounding a hard surface. Flip flops are meant for a public shower or the beach not as a shoe to be walking around. Interesting three different people going to different doctors and they all had the same message. Will be praying for you Sam and that things will heal period

Good shoes is always my first go to answer for people with foot issues. I had foot problems and it took me a while to find the best brand and shoe fit for me but it worked, I made a living on my feet so they had to be happy. I was an RN and I had seen people with the injections and surgeries only get , most of the time, temp relief. An exercise I did was to stand on a step just on the balls of my feet, then lower my heels down, hold for a cout to five and then bringing my heels back up, several repeats each time. Eventually extending the length of time the heels are lowered. This stretches the tendons and calf muscles making them stronger. Careful not to do too many stretches at a time but you can repeat them several times a day. Good luck and I hope the inflammation stays away. I hate surgery, it should always be the absolute last resort. Every time I have had surgery something else breaks it seems shortly after, can't say as I blame you for putting it off.

Surgery is not always the answer for everyone. I think if you can find a GOOD chiropractor it could fix or help the tightness in your calf. I’ve had bursitis in my hip for over thirty years. After two visits, it no longer bothers me. I was always scared of them, but not anymore.
I wish you the best of luck in whatever route you take. Love the videos.
