Jay Leno is the best - write the joke, tell the joke, get paid - no writers, no frills, no red M&Ms (well except for that silly microphone requirement of his!). This is the greatest 'fun' interview I've ever heard, and I'm 71. I grew up with Johnny Carson and all those old stars and comedians he tells stories about - priceless. The stories he and Dana and David told about their standup history, just amazing. Best surprise and almost unbelievable fact, Leno staying in homes for sale when he was initially homeless in L.A.. That's crazy.
I'm a super car nut, I built models as a kid and have always owned a Corvette. So on top of what an amazing man he is just as a performer, he's the real deal as a car buff. No one I'd rather see own that amazing collection than Jay Leno!!
So glad he came out of the accident well and can joke about it, a '73 year old man on a 71 year old motorcycle, what could go wrong'.
Thanks guys.
Write joke, tell joke, get check. I like that. Jay is the man!
Yeah, that's the philosophy of show business. But, Leno forgot to mention: Be a "cut-throat ass-hole" too. His ethics really show through. In real life he's someone that seems genuinely kind. But, he's learned to be callus and knows betrayal. Ask David Letterman and Conan O'Brian. They know his modus operantis.
Lol. Not true. He doesn't make the decisions. It was NBC pulling the strings. You know what NBC stands for? "Nothing But Cu**s" @@AllTheBestCO
Hearing Carvey and Spade laughing at Leno’s hilarious jokes and stories is like hearing a crowd cheer during a live song that you love. Love learning from pros about life, like listening to Chappelle or Michael Caine on Actor’s Studio
Those who love Jay, His podcast with Jay Mohr is amazing...Nice to see Jay on the FOTW
I always wanted to see Jay's show on NBC with my son. We would always watch it together to relieve the stress of the day. He's so real and genuine. It's very refreshing. Not everyone can be as natural as Jay. I watch his new show "You bet your life" every day!
He kept Kev and it's like being with two old friends.
I’ve seen/heard the “chopping broccoli” skit countless times, but it still cracks me up every time Carvey does it
The McHale’s Navy actor Jay was talking about was Carl Ballantine.
Bingo, I was yelling the name at my laptop! 😅
The "Great Ballantine", Magician, lol. 😊
@@EVzipper48 Careful of your blood pressure. His real name was, Meyer Kessler. He took the name "Ballantine" from a whisky bottle.
Such an incredible interview. We all grew up on Jay Leno... brilliant comic.
Um, no, we all didn't. That's egocentric af.
@@r.p.mcmurphy6623 He should have added except for the elderly -- we grew up and then Leno appeared! :)
@@r.p.mcmurphy6623 It's called "a figure of speech," snowflake.
@r.p.mcmurphy6623 used "af" so obviously he's growing up with Jimmy Fallon. That sucks.
But he did click on a podcast with Jay Leno on it.
That's ironic *af* .
I grew up on Conan. The 🐐
I love you David and Dana. Such decent smart funny guys. And Leno the solid rock,....Great guy. We appreciate you having these fascinating cool conversations. They're very reassuring in these uncertain times.
I have seen Jay's stand up twice in Milwaukee. The first time was in the 1980's at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. My brother and I had been consuming alcohol before we went to the show, and we were a little obnoxious about yelling at him: "Do ELVIS!!" He handled us like a pro with his lacerating wit. He is such great performer.
The guy from McHale's Navy was Carl Ballantine.
What a pleasure to listen to real artists talking about exactly that ,
their art
And not who they been screwing and rumors and bs to get views .
Thank you
Jay has not only great stand up advice, but great life advice
i was never fan of the Tonight Show with Jay but always loved his standup and really like his car and Im not even into cars. Great interview.
His Tonight show was always watered down Jay to please and not offend as many viewers as possible. He's so much better on these types of interviews.
@@marktastic86 100%. When you take over for Johnny Carson and your audience is in their 50’s to almost dead you have too be.
Holy Schmegma Pants!!! , Dana's treble and bass impression of Jay is UNREAL...these 3 guys here are so talented in completely different ways. Tripl3 Threat of Comedy 3pisode, glad to be alive and have ears
Huge kudos for the smegma pants, there brother!….. one of my favourite words in the world is smegma! Lmao

I absolutely love this podcast! Can't wait to listen to them all
Hello Dana and David! I just recently started listing to podcasts. I started with Bill Maher's Club Random then Joe Rogan, Bill Burr's and led me to you guys. I so enjoy your podcast! I listen to you guys the most. I so wish yawl would video these episodes! Even though I could picture your expressions would be more enjoyable to watch you two, along with your guests.
This episode with Jay Leno was great to hear him talk about his life. So glad he is recovering from his mishaps. When Jay Leno was talking about his interview with Rodney Dangerfield having a stroke. I remember that episode, I thought the same thing, that something wasn't right with Rodney!
Thank you for going down memory lane with the old tv shows like Mannix, Cannon (sorta overweight, ha!) and Matlock. Notice how it used to be a one man show?
I'm remember the Johnny Carson days and how he had many guest host do his show. Gary Shandling, Joan Rivers, and of course Jay Leno which was the perfect fit to take over. Just wanted to say I thought Jimmy Kimmel would have been a better fit for the tonight show now. I feel like there is no more Tonight Show, like it's still the Jimmy Fallon show. Don't get me wrong he is a great entertainer! JK would have kept the "Tonight Show" feel.
Anyways, wishing you all the best in life!
The guys are great with the impressions
I love Jay's approach to living Life. It's good to hear someone in show Biz who has his shit together, and is content.
best podcast on right now. so good.
Jay Leno is so underrated. He was such a great Tonight Show host. Before that one of the best comedians. Him, Seinfeld and Robin Williams were the guys. But everyone talks about Letterman, Conan and Carson. You never hear about Leno. Plus he's a nice and loyal guy. Doesn't like the spotlight. He's just an old fashioned hard worker.
That has been his PR campaign for decades.
Loved this interview! I’ve always been fascinated with Stand Up comedy… the access you three presented was remarkable! Probably the BEST behind the scenes interview I’ve ever heard in my life. CLASS ACT!!🎉
An 1:41 minutes long and I selfishly wanted more. Loved it.
Jay's my fav. Thanks.
Jay is such a great comedian! I watch his old specials all the time! Awesome episode!
I had a couple of George Carlin concert tapes when I was young. I listened to them so much I memorized them. I went to see one of his shows, and he did all the material from one of his specials I had memorized. I was so disappointed. I did make my friend laugh as I did some of the routine along with Carlin.
Added later:
Jay's talking about memorizing Carlin, too!
Jay is always entertaining! Would it kill you to have a camera? Audio + Video = Hilarity!
With comedy being so physical, it sucks hearing and not seeing such great comics. Add some production ffs!
I enjoy the voice only
Idgaf who they talk to or about what, this show is aces!
Always love the podcast Dave and Dana... Had missed this one with Jay Leno, Fantastic! I saw the great funny, veteran actor who starred in Cat Ballou, Dirty Dozen, Paint your Wagon, and so many more, .Mr. Lee Marvin in Tuscon, AZ at a 7-11 around 1983? He passed a few years later at just 63 years old...He had a hard life, marine sniper, fame, tough guy actor, Pall Malls, alcohol, and beautiful women That was the real Hollywood. Keep up the good conversations guys. Peace and Love
Jay's so freaking funny! Never cared for late nite when he was on, think I was too young. But his comedy is great. I've really gotten into it the last 10 years.
PS- crazy Jay's story about living in Open Houses 😳😱🤣💕👍
great show. Jay's a class act
Dana does a perfect Jay Leno impression.
Norm MacDonald OWNED the Matlock genre, may he RIP.
Jay's joke to Rodney killed.
Jay is always good.
Hay Leno and Louis CK are different in so many ways, but their work ethic and dedication to the craft are inspiring.
I'm in love with Spade and Dana.
That was great! I love Jay. I remember how much my friends and I were into his what’s my beef Dave routine.
Jay, "Where's that on the girl?!
Can I just point out that this man is one more example of a great Italian-American? With or without the self referential humor. ;)
The Rodney story was something else. I laughed, I cried. And I absolutely believe he laughed and wanted to adjust his tie after Jay told him he truly loved him with that post finger squeeze joke.
I gotta go stress eat after fighting the tears for a dang hour. Goodnight, Godspeed, and Bob Newhart never requited my mother's crush, but we both thought he was the 🐝🐝 knees!
Never knew this Podcast existed & now I have a reason to continue living ❤
Just hearing Dana do that one sentence in Jack Benny's voice blows me away. I guess there's no one he can't do.
Dana is the best voice impersonator in the world.
You know a lot of people talk about how great Carson was, but i disagree. Leno was the golden age and the funniest times on late night. I was a teenager and me n my brother used to love watching Leno. Headlines was the best segment on Mondays ever. Its a real shame to see what late nights become now. Colbert really dropped the ball and now its just democrat propaganda.
I love Carson, but I grew up on Jay and he is my favorite. You are sadly right about late night TV hosts today. It is unwatchable political garbage. I miss the Jay (and Conan) era!
Love you boys and Leno - kick ass good fun 🔥🔥🔥🚀
When Spade said his text gag to Renner flopped so he threw Leno under the bus, I FUGN HOWLED. 😂 The way he set that up and turned it, Spade has the crackingist whit in the business. Love it, thnx for a REAL laugh. 😊
Gentlemen I grew up on Saturday night live, and just like you two crazy kids, we grew up in the 80's shaaaaaa, I listen to every episode and I am a loyal fan here on UA-cam, thank you for your show and thank you for the content and thank you for letting me hear about your lives growing up as comedians and getting signed to Saturday night live....
Jay is always a good interview
Hey, Mike Connors getting a nice mention from Jay. "Mannix" was one of the best detective shows from the 70s. "Cannon" was right up there too.
5:50 Interview starts.
The 'yard-sale' actor/magician from "McHale's Navy" whose name Leno couldn't remember .... Carl Ballantine.
Solid episode! "2 90's" 😂
Csn you explain that?
Great jargon: two 90 min. comedy sets
This rrrrrocked!!! Thanks guys! I learned a ship 🚢 load of advice:-)
Accidentally spoke to him learning the phones at SNL, looking for one of his old writers. Same persona offstage as on, unlike say Dave.
Saw Jay a couple times at the Comedy & Magic Club over the last couple months. He killed!
He is so different and more edgy as a pure stand-up versus the Tonight Show persona.
Bill Hicks talked about that.
@@seanwebb605 Bill Hicks sucked.
@@ZeroESG.goopootoob Bill Hicks was brilliant. Jay Leno sucks.
@@seanwebb605 Have you seen Jay live?
Also, like Norm would say, Bill Hicks just says political crap that people like you want to hear, but he does it without being funny.
@@ZeroESG.goopootoob Bill Hicks was a true comic. The rub on Jay Leno has been that he is a talented comic and he turned it off to suit middle America on the Tonight Show. The Joey Lawrence stuff and Doritos being a fine example. You got a license? You got a car? When Norm MacDonald was trying to get on the Tonight Show he wanted to be on with Johnny Carson. In his book he said that the producers told him they thought he was a Leno comic. He didn't want to be a Leno comic. Carson was the guy whose approval mattered. When that window closed he praised and recognized that Letterman was the guy for helping comedians. And he had great success with O'Brien. He sided strongly with Letterman and O'Brien. Leno stinks!
Leno has great stories.
David: “ you didn’t cancel… “
Jay: “ I don’t cancel… “
Awesome podcast!
5:42 the intro music begins to when we get to the interview.
I love Davena Sparvey!
I’m glad they talked about Chris Rock’s special. I thought it was great, and that last 10 minutes was everything. I dare any naysayer to go through the year he had, then do a solid hour live, and end with that rapier-like finish. I was so glad for him, I was in tears. A lot of people would never get on a stage after being attacked. The guy’s a hero.
Great interview with Jay!
Loved this interview guys no better authority on the subject of Stand Up than Jay Leno.
He needs to add "survive horrifying accident" on his "tell joke, get check" list.
You had Jay and Conan, waiting for Letterman and Jeff Zucker.
Now, that's funny
Hahahahaha David is on fire 🔥
Jay Leno is so down-to-earth and politically non-partisan, I miss him on the TS. He’s a heck of a comic and interviewer.
It seems like people can't let people finish their sentences anymore. Every podcast does that now.
I saw Jay in the mid 80's also. An hour and a half, never got "laughed out".
I love that the comment section always has whiners demanding video and D&D blatantly ignores them 😂😂😂😂
As Jay said "thank you, gentlemen!"
How are there not more subscribers!? Dana and David you guys rule!
Foreskin ears hahahahaha.
I can't believe Jay snuck in a mohel joke! What a consummate professional!
What is the After Show?
They're talking about the show they hosted directly after Chris Rock's Live Stand Up special.
Love show.
This show is awesome with out video. The hosts and guests are probably more comfortable this way
love all you guys....GG Rebimik
I always preferred Letterman over Leno - just a preference.
Then, when the Stuttering John fiasco happened where John supposedly got poached to the Leno Show ( I know there are two sides to a story..LOL) I hated Leno being a big Stern fan.
Fast forward to a year ago where I discovered his car show and started watching it, and now am a fan...LOL. Cars really suit Jay - seems very content and relaxed on the show.
I'm more of a Letterman, Conan, and Kimmel fan. Leno lives in the past. His humor is dry and dated.
Jay Leno's joke about Renners snowplow accident, crushed, but not nearly as much as the snow plow.
Joe Flynn is the guy you’re trying to remember? From McHales?
J.B. Smoove!
That moile joke deserved more respect than it got.
Leno...funny man.
at 42:00 - talking about Marc Maron?
My guess would be Dice.
Andy Dick?
Jay flashing back to Richard Pryor catching on fire…
7:42 The word edited out was, "black." Haha! "That word! That word!"
I'm curious to see how the ev car explosion effects the classic car collecting world.
I've been thinking the same thing lately. The only car that I want is a Porsche (replica) 356 EV. If I can ever afford to build one. It would be a fun hobby.
@@AllTheBestCO I think you can do it.
@@jamesbingham1007Thanks, James. I will. My goal us within 5 years. -Rocco
Carl Ballantine. Most of the TV extras did'nt make squat. See Gilligans Island. Carl had some local show in Chicago I think.
The moyle!
😀😁😂
I Didn't care for Jay’s subdued kind of pessimistic lines about Rickles. The man was a legend, and regardless if he cared for him, you have to recognize his impact on the business.
Leno is still bitter that Don Rickles used to call him a WOP. His insecurities got the best of him.
He's starting to look like Josh Peck a little
Carl Ballantine is the
McHale's navy guy Leno was talking about he I believe did magic ,NOT THE BASKETBALL PLAYER!
Yup, "The Great Ballantine", lol.
1st view, like and comment! Oh yeah!
He did host snl in 1985
Cosbo?
Hahahaha Dana Farbee
You know you've made it when you can call your face guy
Yay....Jay!
Glad there is no video…we get it. We get it. You want us to think you are self made.
smokin broccoli
😂😂😂😂That's she's "choppin' broccoli" 🥦🤣🤣🤣😉 with a dramatic piano
I must be misunderstanding the Newhart astronaut joke. I always thought the humor came from the absurdity of the assertion the alien race is technologically ahead of us "about 6 weeks." In other words, technological advancements across societies are measured on the order of - at the very least - years, so how could anyone's assessment be so precise, so fine tuned, as to determine they're only 6 weeks ahead?
Good one
