    I had the FH-100W which was a beast and sold it last year. Currently have the FH-7 MK II and the PS-Q7 turntable, sounds superb ! I do have the battery holder for the FH-7 which requires 12 x D cells :) The FH-7 has a digital tuner with a green back light and uses 2 x AA batteries to maintain the station presets.

    !! What a Good Looking Boombox. It's Great that the owner keeps it working. Bluetooth Speakers Just don't have the same Emotions attached to them and they don't look that great even with all their RGB Lighting.

      Especially for the 50 bucks he paid for it. Well worth it. That was probably close to 1000 new.

      Not quite a boombox...it can NOT operate on batteries, so while you could carry it around, unless you have AC line power available, there is no way to play it outside.

      I had another sony version of this that did run on 8 D cells Power supply that swapped out with ac power supply around 1985 when I was in military.

    First boom box/component system I've seen with real horn tweets and mids....Cool

      This isn't really a boom box. First it weighs about 40lbs and does not run on batteries. This is a home stereo that you can move from room to room.

    Those APM speakers are interesting. Sony gave their R&D team lots of time and budget back then, just to see what they could come up with.

      I have a pair of APM computer speakers and they are amazing. I should drag them into the shop and show them off someday because they are really quite the little units and they were very expensive when they were new. I remember selling them to the local computer shop and they were five or six hundred dollars for the pair. Had a built-in 30 watt per channel amplifier. When the computer shop went under the owner of the shop sold me them for 25 bucks. I have them on my old computer which I haven't turned on in probably 10 years.

      Ditto - get em on the bench! Maybe give us a look a the driver with it's funky pistons, and test the crossover caps for the fun.

    If memory serves Those type of bulbs were used in the instrument clusters of Volvo and European cars, They should still be available
    Canadian tire has them listed as
    Sylvania 2721 Long Life Mini Bulbs.
    but depending on the wattage is uncertain - I'm guessing they could be 10watts.

    My trouble with replacing vintage bulbs is that it's not guaranteed that if you find n open voltage on the line you need n voltage light bulb... sometimes you need much less than that as the current is limited. Also for the LED swap you have provide your own rectification.
    What I believe keeps the industry of small incandescent light bulbs going is industrial electrical application where a lot of indicators still rely on these small bulbs of every size, shape and voltage.
    I've also managed to find a COB LED strip that convincingly replicates the tone of incandescent light bulbs and it's 2700°K, not the usual 3000 °K.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 місяці тому

      The problem with swapping to LED is the hot spot. For example on the NAD the guy wants the lights brighter than the incandescent. So in went in a strip of LED, and sure its brighhter, but even with a diffuser added there is a hot strip across that I would find unacceptable and if he thinks I am going to take it apart and put the incandescent lamps in again because the hot spot and color temperature is not good then he has another thought coming. The incandescent looks great, like the original. If its't not quite as bright oh well, that is what lamps we can get today. Not every wattage and voltage of bulb is available today. You could have 5 different incandescent bulbs same voltage different wattage and all different brightness. Thats why they all had numbers, like type 47, or 65 ect. That determined the voltage, wattage and base type. Bayonet, screw in miniature, twins lock, push in ect.

    I rescued a Sony FH-909R for being cannibalised from a so called "repair technician" good thing i still can source some of the components and seems he replaced the lightbulbs with those Christmas lights thing and it started to melt the plastic at the back of the screen.. I worked the unit for almost a month and thing works great except for the lcd on the tuner and the amplifier that loose some of its segment. Any ideas on how to repair those? Btw, the thing sounds great to me when the Super Acoustic Turbo is on.

    How does the bulb tuner light turn green on the LCD display, hope you make the tear down video

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 місяці тому +1

      There is a green filter in front of the lcd. No tear down because the owner has collected it.

      Yes I fixed the HDMI on my old Sony cx220. I don't normally work on them though. I wouldn't take one in for repair. I only did it because it was mine.
