  • I had the excellent fortune of finding a complete FH-606R Portable Stereo Boombox Component System on the side of the road, put out ready for the bin. Not on my watch! There were a few issues, all fixable. The CD player and cassette players needed new belts, and the tuner backlight died during testing, so I repaired that too. You can jump ahead:
CD teardown and belt change - 3:23
Boiling a belt to restore it - 9:18
Cassette deck teardown and belt change - 11:51
Changing tuner back light globes - 18:28
    Final test - 20:51
    This unit came complete with:
    TA-606 Integrated Amplifier (35W + 35W),
ST-707RM AM + FM Stereo Tuner,
    TC-W606 Twin Stereo Cassette Deck,
CDP-S45 CD Player (not matching, but very close),
2 x APM-606 APM (Accurate Pistonic Motion) SAT (Super Acoustic Turbo)
    3 way sealed speakers,
    Sony System Remote RM-806,
    Sony CD Player Remote RM-D320,
Original carry handle to make this boombox portable (14 kg... yeah nah).
The sound is excellent, with deep and clear bass and plenty of power from the 35 watt per channel amplifier. The spectrum analyser is of course, mesmerising, and the graphic equaliser gives complete control of the sound. The volume knob is motorised and all remotes work perfectly.
I'll do a complete review of this rare vintage 1980's masterpiece in another video soon...

I know. A BIG part of me wanted to keep this beauty, but common sense prevailed... Well done getting a FH909R.

I'm have the 1996 Sony MHC-E80X but only controller and amplifier section still working. The cassette and CD section were dead more 15 years ago.

Ahh, that was a very pretty bit of kit. Although I confess I like the square 'blockiness' of this model. If you still have the CD, it may be worth it to replace the laser module and the belts. I bought a mixed 1mm square belt set, just waiting for them to arrive to change the belt for a new one!

@@pescado99 I think I can't repair it, I have no engineering skill. So now the controller and the amplifier section I just use for PC audio amp. Almost 30 years this machine, time flash so fast. xixixi.

I have this type, I have a problem with the yellow bulbs lamp, how does it become a green color at front display?

It is because of the colour of the LCD panel.

are the bulbs 6 or 12 volt? and are the AC or DC?

12 volt. Supply is DC, but for globes it doesn't matter.

@pescado99 It's good to hear it from you and that's Sony quality. You are lucky to own it!
I had a Sony FH 322R (without a CD Player) which I bought in early 90's. It worked well but it went ka-put few years later.
