What's The Story With Kylo Ren? The Last Skywalker
Вставка

- The Rise of Skywalker will be the last time we see Kylo Ren. The truth is, he could have been great.
Kylo Ren is a great example of how little interest JJ Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm had in their own creation. Our main villain was a confusing mess with confusing powers. Did anyone actually like him? Did Leia know he was her son? Is Rian Johnson’s Kylo the same character as JJ Abram’s Kylo?
Here are my thoughts on the great Kylo Ren!

Why didn’t Obi-wan try to murder Anakin in his sleep?
Seems like the heroic thing to do.
Don't. Even.
Obi-Wan is my fav SW character, and at least the sequels didn't ruin *him* - don't give Disney any more ammunition for their character assassination of the original characters.
LadyDoomsinger yeah.
At this point, it’s no longer about if it’s ‘canon’. To me, sequels aint Star Wars. But it’s about hearing the abomination that someone could even THINK about doing, I no longer want to hear how someone ruined my favorite character. No thank you.
Because Anakin was the chosen one. Still is.
@Dr. Me he meant before anakin did anything anakin had just slaughtered chidlren also obi wan didn't plan on cutting him down I told him not to try it I had to in self defence
@@LadyDoomsinger But isn't that wild though? Obi-Wan is a central character in 6 films. Even as a ghost he is an important character, even more so than Yoda. And all we get for him in the sequels is a voice. Not even a mention of his name....a voice. That's like a Terminator film that doesn't mention a T-800. You just here Arnold's voice in the background.
I had so much hope with Kilo in TFA, until he got his ass kicked, then because an embarrassment from there on.
Just like the rest of the Disney Trilogy, waste of potential.
@Dr. Me Nah the prequels were actually good.
@@emberfist8347 The prequels were dogshit
What is wrong with Rey beating Kylo. Kylo was shot in the chest with Chewbacca's explosion bow thing.
@@thomanom2627 No the prequels are lightyears ahead of this crap Disney made. They had better characters, better story, better villains, better aliens, and better effects and soundtrack.
@@thomanom2627 If he bowcaster didn't blast him off that platform, he is not badly wounded enough to lose to a person who never wielded a lightsaber before.
The sequels wasted an actor like Adam. And he was still the best part of the trilogy.
After all these years, I am loving the feeling of vindication. When I first saw Force Awakens, Kylo was actually one of my biggest problems. Everything about him seemed wrong; he makes an intimidating entrance and does some cool stuff...but it's ruined the moment he starts speaking. In that mask, his voice sounds really dumb. Then he throws a tantrum with his lightsaber - twice...Then he takes the mask off to show...he's just some slimey, pastey-faced kid...
And that's when it clicked for me what they were trying to do with him and how insulting it was. What was worse was afterwards, people were saying - "Oh he's SO deep and so complex. Best written character EVER. He's Anakin done RIGHT."
And I'm left thinking - "What movie did YOU guys watch?"
This kid isn't Anakin done right at all; this kid is just some kid PRETENDING to be Darth Vader - complete with Mask and Cape. It's literally the most pathetic thing I've ever seen.
What really piss me off the most about Kylo Ren is that despite the fact that both parents treated him roughly the same, he has more hesitation towards kill one of them than the other which he murders more readily. On top of that, he somehow cares about both of his parents despite the fact they abandoned him if anything, he shouldn't have any light left in him he should be with pure malice, hate, and any dark side emotion for what happened despite that he still hesitates about murdering both of their sorry arses for some reason.
Absolutely! I felt the exact same way about Kylo being pathetic, and can't understand WHY some people actually like these sequels... I mean I really wanted to like them, but they're just SO gawdawful that I can't...
Pathetic really sums it up all right...
@@myujokt733 Well I had rather abusive parents and I didn't kill them, though I seriously thought about it one particularly bad time when I was about 13, realized for effed up that was, and went to live with my grandmother as much as possible... Still I reconciled with my parents and took care of them till Dad passed on and still looking after Mom as she's growing older and weaker, and she was there main abusive one, Dad just started at work as much as possible. I realize too that a LOT of people had such situations FAR worse than I did as well. Just because life hands you a bag of shit doesn't mean you have to WALLOW in it-- that is a CHOICE. I decided never to raise a hand in anger to my kid and never have, nor to my wife. Not like my parents who would go bat shit crazy beating you at the drop of a hat. I can forgive, but like a relative of mine said one time, "I can forgive, but I damn sure can't forget".
Some people in such situations "take vengeance" either on their parents, themselves, someone else, or the world at large (like shooting up a school or whatever), some people move 3,000 miles away and sever all ties to their kin who abused them, some folks forgive and move on to varying degrees, some strive to do what's right even though the other person who abused them didn't. That's the road I CHOSE... I forgave and take care of them because IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO...
So Kylo was "abandoned" by his parents, and "betrayed" by his mentor... So he becomes the equivalent of some nut job who shoots up schools, because he was hurt. Typical thinking nowadays... How many people have it or had it MUCH WORSE, and yet they DON'T become evil incarnate just to satisfy their own thirst for revenge? That's why Kylo is so pathetic... He reminded me of nothing as much as those "trenchcoat mafia" shitheads that shot up Columbine... Just some spoiled rich brats being poser wannabes that had ABSOLUTELY *NO* CLUE about what REAL problems and pain and suffering really are, and took the chickenshit way out to get their "revenge" on the world for "mistreating" them... Losers of the lowest sort, rotting in hell and rightfully so...
Later! OL J R
Those people were the JJ Abrams ass-sniffers at the time who thought he could do no wrong. Those idiots are why the talentless hack has a career.
0:11 That's NOT Anakin Skywalker!
10:19 THAT'S Anakin Skywalker!
Before I saw this Video I kept telling myself Kylo was the only good thing abut the Sequels but now I am convinced that even he is not that good.
The thing with force ghosts is that nobody seems to understand them. It's not a Jedi or Sith ability. It belongs to the wills who are now extinct. After they died they came back as force ghosts. It's an ability that needs to be learned. Qui-Gon was the first Jedi to disco it. After his death he reached out to Yoda and tought him. Yoda tought Obi-Wan. Anakin was sort of the personification of the force so he didn't need to be tought that one thing. To him it came naturally. So Luke could have learned from Yoda or Obi-Wan. But Leia didn't even complete her training so she shouldn't have a force ghost. Same as Kylo
Oh how this video could have been better without a sponsor ruining it in the middle. I know it pays the bills n you went about it in the right way but sponsors can still be shown at the end. The only reason I say this is because your videos are so addicting all the way through n a sponsor makes me wanna get back on subject. Glad your channel is doing well enough for them though. Keep it up mate!
I would have liked to see Finn as the main character instead of Rey, but it would have made more sense if the sequel trilogy focused more on Kylo and Luke. We only got brief flashbacks of what happened at the temple. We should have had an entire movie about what happened at the temple. But Rey just had to be the focus of the trilogy--even though there was really no story to tell with her.
2:24 I wanna point out you can clearly see that Kylo's lightsaber is already turned on before you hear the ignition sound.
“The Rise of Skywalker” why even call it that if it’s not about Kylo?? It should have been the rise of Ben solo and his journey going from a manipulated Sith apprentice to a full fledged Jedi. Rey should have lost, and Kylo had to save her and redeem himself and all the last Jedi could have poured their experiences into him with flashbacks of their lives and training.
I honestly feel like Kylo smashing his helmet is a good representation of how Snoke Manipulated him (kinda like how Palpatine manipulated a emotional unstable Anakin)

You sir are the best!!! This should sum up how shitty things got over the last 6 years: for The Force Awakens I bought out an entire theatre and 59 of my closest friends and I went to see it on opening day (it sounds more expensive that it is and because tickets were $12.50 and nobody had change I actually and unintentionally made money for being able to buy all the seats in a theatre a month and a half before the opening). That's how excited I and everyone involved was. 6 of us went to the convention in Anaheim before TFA came out and I was in like 2 or 3 text groups that were Star Wars only conversations for over a year leading up to TFA and to be honest it was exactly what I expected. However leading up The Last Jedi there wasn't that same excitement leading up to it and after seeing it at a 2AM showing I walked out asking my friends what the fuck we had just seen. When it was released for home viewing I finally watched it again to try and comprehend what I had seen on opening night and I just got even more frustrated and angry... very angry. So much so that this 46 year old man who saw A New Hope at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood when he was 4 years old hasn't seen this last installment yet and after watching you last two videos I believe I haven't made the wrong decision. I can't be;ieve that Disney could fuck this up so bad and that Lucas allowed it. It's shameful on too many levels and everyone involved in the last trilogy should be taken out into a field and shot... all of them... Hamil included.
"Kathleen Kennedy and jj abrams has lack of interest in the characters they created"
A'hole Dads: hold my beer
Adam driver trying to do the han solo shrug made me violently sick
If Luke had molested Kylo then everything makes sense. Kylo is depressed and angry all the time. Han and Leia feel guilt and denial because of their relationships with Luke. Kylo hates his parents for putting him at risk. Kylo tortures Rei and Poe rather then befriend them and feel compelled to share why he is upset. Luke came into his bedroom uninvited with his "saber" out. Other students ran away from Luke too. His constant rage. When Rei is uncomfortable about his being undressed Kylo doesn't even hear her. I wish I was wrong but no other explanation was given by Disney!
well in all honesty, Daisy CAN act. both did a good job
The reason Rey so the most powerful and have all the jedi rally to her, and not to Kylo is because the Force is female. duh
I really wish they treated Ben with more respect tbh, he’s the last of the skywalkers and you’d think the force ghosts would’ve came earlier to guide him as well, considering he’s part of a very important family, his grandpa is the chosen one and his uncle is one of the most powerful Jedi ever, and that’s just a small part of it, everyone in his family is important meanwhile Rey has the most infamous family name ever.
As always, brilliant!
things that could have made kylo a somewhat decent character (if not a good villain)
1) Disney should have casted an actual 20 something actor
2) given him some flashback scene with his parents/atleast one scene with leia
3) not push the love angle with rey
Kylo: What's going on uncle luke?
Luke: I thought I heard something
I actually thought of this as I watched the movie. Origin story made 0 fkn sense.
OMFG LUCAS LAUGHED
Thanks for the VPN finally a good deal.
I'll be honest, I feel sorry for Adam Driver. He was just doing his acting and fans force his and Daisy Ridley's Star Wars ship on him. Then when you look at his character, it just shows he had great potential, but it just fumbled like most of the sequel trilogy.
Imagine Maul against Rey and Finn at the end of force awakens... He would've had a field day toying with them. Dooku on the other hand would've prolly zapped them into oblivion and gone off to sip some wine. Now imagine poor Kylo who started out as a badass and ended up as a sissy against Ahsoka and your average clone trooper in that scene.
Why does Kylo sound like he has a head cold with the dumb mask on?
Bro everybody knows that Star Wars sequels doesn’t exists. It was just a bad dream. It is not real. Only movies they made was Rouge One and Solo.

They wasted so many characters. Finn, Phasma, Ren, Poe, there’s just too many.
They just had no idea how to develop characters over time. All the characters were props, frozen in time after having been initially thought out. And the start of the characters in TFA wasn't that bad for the most part. Even Rey had a lot to like. I didn't despise that character until I realized that they had made her already perfect. Like the others she never had any character development after that. Like a god she just floated through the remaining movies unchanging. SO BORING!
The only "development" after that were the endless retcons. Finn was straight. Then he was gay. And then he was possibly straight again. Not because any of that nonsense made any sense in the story, but because the idiots writing it were trying to figure out if the audience was "ready for gay lovin' in Star Wars". The same crap went on with all the other characters, and nothing was even remotely organic or story driven. Focus groups, moronic identity politics and silly fads drove the project over a cliff. it is by far the most misguided movie trilogy anyone has ever made.
I genuinely forgot about Phasma... I'm sad now

Even when the writing was shit Adam Driver did his best to elevate the character, something the other actors weren’t even able to do
Much like Hayden Christensen, he'll forever get shit when he was the only one trying in some of his scenes.
I'd say that Oscar Isaac did his best to elevate Poe, at least in the first two movies. He was the only character in TLJ that was actually making sense until the last part of the film.

I don't know why, but Rey asking if Kylo could put on a shirt and Kylo just staring blankly at her is the funniest shit I've seen all day today. And I'm 100% sure the hilarity was unintentional.
The high waist on those pants Kylo is wearing is funny by itself.
Sequel Trilogy characters in a Nutshell
Poe: Boring side character
Finn: Not funny side character (that realy should be the main protagonist)
Rey: Mary Sue
Kylo Ren (Ben Swolo) : Emo teenager that has problems with anger
Snoke: Villain on the chair that does nothing besides saying stuff
@Shillyvk Sshilly yes. Yes he had but still
Yep
And Poe and Finn honestly got pretty annoying in TROS (and Rey was constantly annoying with how overpowered she was, and taking everything from the Skywalker Legacy, from the lightsaber, to the X-wing, to the home on Tatooine, and to the name)
Kylo is a waste of potential, he had the look but everything else is awful. He is evil because of plot, he choose his own path instead
of his family, no sympathetic traits or motivation behind his actions.
I'm not even sure about wasted potential. Waste of a good actor, sure, but even in TFA, he seemed like a bad knockoff of Zuko from Avatar: the Last Airbender.
The anger issues, the sheer determination, the inferiority complex and desperation to please his superior (his abusive dad in Zuko's case, Snoke in Kylo's case), it was uncanny. But Zuko actually earned those traits: his characterization made sense and, while lacking in power, he was still a good antagonist through cunning, resourcefulness, and learning from his mistakes by not underestimating Aang.
this whole trilogy was a waste of potential
I like his lightsaber and the look with the mask on but everything else nope.
The whole Trilogy was wasted potential, started out well enough but quickly went downhill as bad writing, lack of planning and poor oversight took hold, its no wonder people proclaim its not cannon, it undoes everything estalished in the original trilogy and makes a HUGE mess that never got fixed!
Maybe it’s just me, but they really needed to keep him in that helmet because Adam Driver, while a good actor, is not intimidating in the slightest. I always laugh when he looks pissed up and just hammers in how Kylo just looks like a whiny edgylord.

Kylo Ren's last word: Ow.
One's a father proud that his son saw the good in him and expressing that pride before he dies. The other's a whiny manchild crying in pain.
The original Luke was similar but he actually had a personality and would actually lose fights. Rey could have a fucking nuke set next to her and she'd still somehow squeak out of it. I firmly believe that there is literally NOTHING in star wars that could possibly defeat or corrupt Rey. She has the best ability in the universe, unfortunately it's nothing creative just plot armor to the highest degree.
One thing I was always dissapointed about was that they revealed what Kylo looked like too early.
When he takes his helmet off for the first time should have been when his father asks him to remove it, and we see the real, scared, unsure Ben Solo underneath. But then after he kills Han, he replaces his helmet and resumes being Kylo Ren.
The removal of his helmet at ONLY key dramatic points in the series could have really lent his character a bit more mystery, I think.

Really would’ve been more interesting if Kylo was the one who survived. Imagine the looks on all of the Rebels’ faces when Red 5 lands, they think Rey is gonna greet them, and out climbs Kylo.

@@thanos_6.0 And now they're scrambling to wipe it up with all of these live action tv series.
Kylo Ren was already a huge disappointment in the first movie and just kept getting worse every film after that
And yet he's the best character in the sequels, cuz the others are somehow even worse.
Yeah he started like a bad ass, but then he took off his mask. The whole series went down hill from that point.
Very true. He was at first shown to be powerful (stopped laser) and intimidating. Then he throws a tantrum which undermined his control and power...and the mask should have been only taken off for Han Solo, not for Rey's interrogation.
I completely agree. I honestly didn't get why so many people liked Kylo Ren so much after TFA; to me, he seemed like a cheap knockoff of Zuko from Avatar: the Last Airbender.
Think about it: the anger issues, the determination, the inferiority complex and the desperation to please their superior. Only, with Zuko, all of that stuff made sense! His motivations were clear, and he compensated for his lack of power with cunning, resourcefulness, and being the only antagonist to learn from his mistakes and not underestimate Aang.
@@dainadossantos5122 100% agreed. Especially since when he removed his mask in front of Rey, the scene was shot as if it was going to be some sort of big reveal, but it had no impact at all; Rey didn't know how to react, and neither did we (the audience).

DrViperVideos Played by a well-known dramatic actor in his 30s.
Kylo could have been played by some unknown, rising star in a career defining moment who we could form a bond with as his complex character took shape.
Instead, we got one of the worst cases of miscasting of a legitimately talented actor in recent history.
People started laughing in my theater. Everyone was expecting some intimidating looking motherfucker and we got Kailo.
@Ebiegberi Adonkie For me it was less the face and more the salon hair; he took off his mask and instead of "helmet hair", he had a giant mane like he was trying to be Samurai Cop. If they had gone with a more "son of Satan" look instead of "boy band audition", he could have at least been a more believable menace, even if it was Happy Meal sized.

Oh please, don't be such an edgelord. People like the sequels based on how they interpret them. I like the sequels for showing an amazing bond between Rey and Ren, Finn's rebellious character and underlying themes in the Last Jedi, just to name a few.
I really feel bad for John and Adam. Their characters had such vast amounts of potential, but not only did they take a backseat to a character who was given everything in a Platinum Platter, but they were left in the dust.
Expanded Universe had Jacen Solo, a smart, peaceful kid who seeked nothing but communion and knowledge of the Force, trained with his sibling Jaina and Anakin, met many friends at Luke's Jedi Praexeum on Yavin 4, including his love, but was then forced into a war with extra galactic aliens. They killed his little brother and countless friends, they captured and tortured him, and when the war ended, he had visions of a dark man corrupting his daughter (yes, the New Jedi can have family in the EU), so he was seduced to the Dark Side by a former Imperial agent, Lumiya, and spent 5 years studying EVERY Force using discipline and Force powers in the Galaxy, with the intent of preventing this dark future. He slained his aunt, Mara Jade, Luke's wife, tries to turn their kid to his cause (which made him completely livid and killed Lumiya thinking she was the culprit), took over the galactic government and became *Darth Caedus* : It took his equally powerful twin sister, Jaina Solo, to stop him, and even then, Jacen/Caedus died saving his wife and daughter. Also, Caedus DID not idolize Vader, he pitied him, as he used one of his new powers to see his downfall to the Dark Side.
Disney canon gave us Ben Swolo, an aloof kid, whose parents neglected him and trash talked him behind his back whenever he had an episode (Han saying he could have become a monster), kept away the truth about his heritage, then sent him away to an uncle who never really treated him lovingly but more like a prize. All while little Ben is telepathically groomed by Snoke, into harboring resentment for both his parents and for Luke being more interested in trash digging Jedi heirlooms. Then one night Luke tries to kill him because he "felt darkness", he finds out from the holonews that mother was Vader's daughter, blows up the Jedi Temple in a Force bitch fit (yep, that's how it happened, you can check The Rise Of Kylo Ren comics to see for yourself), goes to Snoke to cry about it, joins the Knights Who Screech Ree (who are confirmed to be just a bunch of no name thugs from the Unknown Regions and poor connection to the Force), kills the last remaining weakling Jedi initiate, and then becomes Crylo, officially, for about 6-7 years. First he's a pathetic Vader wannabe with daddy issues. After Snoke lectures him on how much he sucks, he turns into a nihilistic manchild that just wants to burn everything. And finally, he turns into a somewhat less whiny Vader wannabe, but ultimately still fails.
Which one seems more interesting, people ? The humble scholar turned PTSD suffering, morally grey schemer ? Or the neglected quiet kid turned nihilistic emo manchild ?

Jep, look at the ones before him: Vader, Sidious or Tyrannus. Or if we start comparing him to the old ones like Revan, Nihilus or even Malgus, who argueably is a weaker character. They are all so far better, while many of them didn‘t come from a Multi-Million Dollar Flick but from videogames.

How come for 6 movies it’s “You can’t kill it’s not the Jedi way” Rey: “Lol stop me”
I thought it was killing an opponent that can't fight back that's not the Jedi way? They seem perfectly fine with killing during war or in self-defence in both the OT and the Prequels.
Yeah, it's not kill an opponent who can't fight back, but even then let's not forget that Rey knows next to NOTHING about how the Jedi are like.
MZX Omega also question about the Jedi use the force for knowledge and defense quote yoda says.Isn’t the defense as in defense of others like to fight for the weak because they are guardians.I bring this up because last Jedi defenders being up the scene where luke transmits a force vision of himself and doesn’t actually fight kylo. They say that this is a perfect example of what a Jedi would do
Yeah, they didn't even hesitate to decapitate Jango Fett. He was killing Jedi and firing his guns like mad, it's not like Samuel L Jackson is just going to take him prisoner like some wimp.
@@Edax_Royeaux That said, one thing about the Prequels was that the Jedi, including Windu, had lost their way, and I believe that, in Legends canon, he came to regret decapitating Fett instead of disarming him and taking him in alive, as by the time he killed Fett, Fett couldn't really fight back. But I could be wrong, as I haven't read one bit of Legends canon.
1:26 Just look at how much contempt Kathleen looks at George with. I mean how could we possibly expect to get anything good from that
She's been biding her time for the last 30+ years by cozying up to nerdlingers Lucas and Spielberg. That's a lot of contempt built up over those years. If Rick McCallum wasn't such a douchey yes man, he'd probably be the one running the show.
She's a more compelling villain than any of the Sequel Trilogy villains.
Imagine what Adam Driver would have done with a decent character and a sliver of good writing. It could have been so good, but alas a great actor can't fix poor writing
For anyone needing to redeem him as an actor, go watch Marriage Story. It's fucking phenomenal and he completely knocks it out of the park.
They could've merged his character with Darth Krayt.
Would've seagwayed into the Yuzong Vong storyline.
Or perhaps, heaven forbid, they could've made him Caedus. His descent to the darkside might well have therefore been a product of Yuzong Vong prescience.
At first I thought “OK, so Kylo is going to try to be his father, realize this isn’t what he wanted, and go good or say screw it and take top place.” Problem is, when he got to the top he was a whiny baby, and his redemption felt rushed.
@Bancho Batchoy they are less there for quotes and more this is what I am saying. Like how they are used a lot in books.
According to the timeline on Wookiepedia, Ben was 10 when he went to train with Luke. According to Leia's dialogue in The Force Awakens, it was when Ben left to train with Luke that she lost both Ben and Han. So, if Han was with his family until Ben left for training, where did the "deadbeat dad" story come from? How can you not be there for your son, if your son isn't there?
You are right. Kylo Ren was great in the beginning. I thought the character had a lot of potential. I think they just didn't know what to do with him any more than they knew what to do with any of the other characters. Their big mistake was not letting him just be a bad guy, like Vader was in the OT. No one questioned why Vader was a bad guy. He just was. We didn't see Vader struggling between the light and dark sides of the Force either, so there was no reason to question how he got to that place.
They made things very messy by trying to tell Ben's story and Rey's at the same time, and they focused on the wrong one. Rey was a nobody who didn't have a story, so why waste time on her? Her biggest problem was that she didn't know who she was, because they didn't bother to give her any real backstory. She wasn't even smart enough to realize that, since she was marked, if she went back to Jakku, she'd be killed, or someone there would turn her in to the First Order for a pile of credits, or powdered food packets. Her Teflon-coated plot armor saved her from herself.
Kylo Ren is probably the most disappointing star wars villain ever
he was great until he lost the fight to Rey in force awakens. Still the best thing to come from the sequels though.
At this point they could have turned Supergirl evil and it would have made just as much sense. At least a final fight between her and Kylo would have been something preferable, especially if they both ended up dying in the fight. Would have been perfect ending to an otherwise shit trilogy. And Palpatines ending somehow got worse than his last demise, how does that even happen? Only Disney
Count dooku was pretty boring just bc he seemed too nice? He was a gentleman. But its christopher lee, so he automatically gets my praise. But ANYTHING over angry twilight teen boy
DrViperVideos I personally thought it was interesting to have a villain that is questionable on the moral compass ya know? Maybe just me lol
General Grievous was pretty disappointing.
To Star Wars: “Look how they massacred my boy.”
I do like the idea of a Darth Vader-esque character but much more unhinged and likely to lash out. But they leaned too much on the teenage-like angst that it just made Kylo seem bitchy.
Tbh, what I would've done was instead of making Kylo Ren a wannabe Vader, have him be a sort of Hunter who's obsessed with collecting artefacts/objects of power. Instead of having him tied so close to the First Order have him be more of a loose cannon being given authority by Snoke, I like the idea of Kylo and the Knights of Ren being this sort of rogue group that operates outside First Order rules. Have his obsession be his main character flaw and show how far he's willing to go just to get power. It may be a bit generic to just have a character who seeks power but it'd be a hell of a lot better than what we got.
I'd say that would be more refreshing actually. Not every villain needs to have complex motivations.
I think that’s what Kylo was like in the first film. He doesn’t care about Snoke or his shitty Empire full of incompetent cunts. He cares about honoring the legacy of Vader, and by proxy the Sith.

The other problem, other than age, with casting Driver to play Ren is old Marvel dilemma. You pay a well known actor to play a character that is wears a mask and inevitably the studio wants the mask to be removed. In Vader's case we caught a glimpse of him without the mask once in Empire and it just added to his mystique. We didn't see him again until the end of Return.
With Ren he took the mask off for no reason in TFA, then he destroyed it in TLJ, put it back together in ROS only to not wear it that much. Very confusing as to why he ever had the mask to begin with and rather than adding to his mystique it took away from it.
If Driver was half the actor his fans make him out to be he would have made the decision to keep the helmet on. Full method. Makes the most sense. He's not an actor he's just another Hollywood star.
The mask is just like the sequels:
It gets removed and shows its clear inspiration from Episode 4 at first
Then it completely destroys the franchise in Episode 8
Only to desperately be repaired in episode 9 to fix Episode 8's dillema
The biggest mistake they made with him is they had him take off his mask too early. Vader of course had an evil mystique because we never really got to see him without his mask until the end. Not so with Kylo. They totally wasted him as a villain like the did with Finn as a hero. Imagine this- Kylo doesn't take his mask off until he is face to face with his father, Han, on the bridge. Kylo takes it off when Han tries to reach him with words. They could lead us to think it could work, but Kylo turns away from Han, says something poignant, turns around, still kills his father, then puts the mask back on. He doesn't take it off until the end of the third film, as he's dying (preferably not killing Palpatine as he should never been brought back), maybe by killing Snoke in much the same way Vader killed Palpatine. Rey turns him to the light just like Luke did with Vader/Anakin. Lucas can have his whole "it's like poetry, they rhyme" thing and JJ could continue to rip off Lucas, but the whole thing in between wouldn't have sucked so much ass.
Kylo should have left the damn mask on. You're right, the opening to the film was actually pretty damn good (although the whole map thing was pretty damn stupid), but Kylo was an awful villain the second we saw his face. This series didn't have a villain. Kylo wasn't it. Hux was turned into a literal joke, and they killed off Snoke in the second film (he was a shit villain anyways, he was a mystery in a bad way, we needed more information on him). No villain. This trilogy with the simplest of story structures was missing a key element. I just can't believe JJ, Rian, Kennedy and anybody involved with writing characterisation couldn't take all that cash they were paid and write one decent bad guy. None of them should ever be allowed anywhere near a movie, book or short story ever again. They're all terrible at the thing they got alot of money to do.

Just look at Zuko from Avatar: the Last Airbender. Both he and Kylo share in anger management issues, inferiority complex, desperation to please their villainous superior, and sheer determination.
