M.I.A. - Arular ALBUM REVIEW

- Listen: • M.I.A. - Bucky Done Gun
Between M.I.A.'s international genre fusions, off-the-wall production, and politically charged lyrics, Arular is as bold as a debut album can be.

M.I.A. - ARULAR / 2005 / XL / ALTERNATIVE HIP HOP, ELECTROPOP, DANCEHALL, FAVELA FUNK, MIAMI BASS
CLASSIC/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
M.I.A is a genius. She was so ahead of her time it's crazy, and the fact that many people still know her only as the paper planes one hit wonder girl is insane to me.
I mean I don't think she got to the Super Bowl on Paper Planes alone, but it's her most accessible track by a mile. What's great is unlike many breakout singles it's still one only she could have done.
To be fair, at least her most famous song is still heat
@@bulletfastspeed period
I lover her music so much
straight up. she was pre-death grips, pre-fka twigs (not a direct comparison but you get me). dropped in 2005! crazy
I know the classic reviews don’t do as much numbers as they should, but I really appreciate you still keeping this tradition. Definitely gonna check this album out now
The pb is gold
Thats the spirit
How did you like it? I checked it out yesterday and I'm very blown away. I thinks it's fantastic
@@think.culture I gave it a casual listen while driving and I really dig it! It’s crazy, it honestly sounds like music that could come out next week and feel fresh.
@@think.culture definitely going to give it deeper headphone listens in the future
this album is fire literally starts at 100% and doesn't slow down till the end
I like your profile picture of Golden Hour - Fantano boy gave it only 4 out of 10 and got lots of dislikes. Another classic album.
Esse álbum é tudo de bom 🤧💞
I'm so proud of my boy for saying "south asian" instead of middle eastern for the first time.
I don’t get it, aren’t south asia and the middle east different parts of the world? I didn’t know they were interchangeable.
@@donkeykongvevo8717 They're not, that's why it's cool he said it
@@donkeykongvevo8717 Yeah you're right. which is why it was a little annoying when fantano used to refer to South Asian people and music/musical influences as "Middle Eastern". That's all. He might've actually fixed this a while ago, this is just the first time I personally noticed him using the correct term.
Can you recall any examples in which he's confused them? Mostly just looking for new music from either circles
@@Mrfuzzypants26 Last example I can think of is in the clipping interview he used the term "Middle eastern Raga" even though raga's are mostly just a south Asian thing. But other than that I have no real interest in dredging up older examples of him messing up, he's being a good guy, he's using the right term now, it was an innocent misunderstanding to begin with so it's all good now lol.
Edit: oh wait just read the rest of your comment. I would suggest Sarathy Korwar, he mixes indian classical with jazz and a couple other genres so he's pretty cool. “More arriving” probably the best album to start. Also, if you want something fantano liked, check out heems' solo mixtape "nehru jackets" it's on spotify.
No joke, this album was fire.... Ahead of its time..
It’s still fire!
@@Wildwaffles71 So true, right!!! 2021, these songs still rings off, ain't gonna lie; track 'Pull up the people' still blasting in my headphones...😆
One of the best albums of the 21st century and my favourite M.I.A. album, hands down.
/\/\ /\ Y /\ is even more ahead of its time
If this had come out 2018 or later MIA would rule the pop world
You’re a classic to me Anthony ❤️
He’s obviously a classic with how long it takes him to get it up.
thats so sweet
hell yeah, I'm a 2000s teen for life!!!!
Wholesome that's a classic
"We Watched Every Single Needle Drop Review For 30 Days"
It is classic indeed. The first time I heard about M.I.A. when the music video "Bucky Done Gun" was shown and group of people said their opinions about it. One woman said how she doesn't like foreign artists singing in English instead of their own language. This happened in Finland - we have bands like Nightwish, Children of Bodom, and H.I.M. singing in English. I guess she meant 3rd world artists should not sing in English. The worst opinion ever.
and its funny cuz MIA is literally from England too lol. she speaks perfect english.
@@preciouseaglecactusfruit Yeah, at least she was born in England. Some people asked me why I am speaking English if I am Finnish.
@@Rekko82 Wow, didn't realize she was born in London. I came here all ready to correct you guys and say she grew up in Sri Lanka until a certain age, but both are true-I found she was born in London, family moved to Sri Lanka when she was 6 months old, and then her family returned to London as refugees when she was 11 years old.
“Don’t let that / distract from the fact / that M.I.A. pulls off an amazing balancing act” nice bar
Fire
Don't let this distract you from the fact that I get bullied because my classmates think my videos are the worst. Please don't agree, dear old
It’s not on Arular, but when she said “I put people on a map that never seen a map/ I show 'em something they ain't ever seen and hope they make it back” 🔥 🔥🔥
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Mr Anthony bought this shirt from me on Depop
Really glad Tony finally did this one, there was so much embarrassing MIA slander floating around post Franchise. People flaunting their ignorance of her when she's one of the most influential musical pioneers of the 2000s with 3 classics under her belt.
waiting for 2030 when MAYA gets the recognition it deserves

I get it, but the real actor actually left the show to pursue music and worked with the Flaming Lips, so I wouldn't be surprised if he'd heard of her.
@@brendanb2982 Another reason why the actor left the show was because he's losing his hair and he didn't want millions of kids to witness his balding process. This is true, I'm not just saying it because of melon.

YOOOO I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE KALA I'M STOKED THAT YOU'RE GIVING THIS ONE ATTENTION
same heer, just as worthy for different reasons !
SAAAAME I THOUGHT HE WAS GONNA DO KALA BUT I AM SO HAPPY HE DID ARULAR (WHICH IS MY FAVOURITE M.I.A. ALBUM)! The fact he's covering this album as a *classic" makes me so happy!
I always preferred Kala but this is def a classic, M.I.A rules.
Crazy this came out 15 years ago and she still never got big recognition
Yeah she had one major hit and thats about it
she had bad girls and paper planes
She got buried after her superbowl performance where she gave the finger. The documentary on her, Matangi was really good.
I remember shouting "ARULAR IS MIA'S BEST ALBUM" during the Q&A session of Fantano's last show in San Francisco, and now he's doing a classics review of it. Good Memories.
THIS ALBUM IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS POP MUSIC HAS EVER GIVEN ME.
She expresses the urgency of the third world agenda with such excellence that makes me cry of happiness. ABSOLUTELY ahead of her time. Being from Brasil, it was the first time I could see someone from out of Latin America express anything about my country with such accuracy. It was no offensive caricature. I guess it was so accurate because it was the first time I was not seeing an Imperialistic overview of my culture. There is a bigger degree of understanding when it's between citizens of two countries that have been very explored by Europe and North America throughout History.
And it's funny because I was a kid at the time and I already felt it! I did not know what Imperialism was in theory, but I knew for my experience. So, I got to listen to her music and got in touch with this kind of discourse. Arular started that third-world revolutionary empowerment in my early teenage years. Thanks M.I.A.
Wow, thank you for that read. You really make concrete and clear what I had heard about her bringing the ignored (or, as you describe, caricatured) people into the spotlight, honestly and unapologetically.
I've been listening to M.I.A.'s entire discography on repeat lately. So underrated.
holy fuck i used to have bucky done gun as my ringtone in middle school... i feel so based
Honestly this makes me so happy to see and I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees this banger of an album as a classic.
The Fantano Effect
September: M.I.A.’s trash, Travis should’ve deleted her verse
January: Arular is a classic and we stan M.I.A.
He actually defended MIA a little, he said people shouldn't be harping on MIA specifically when pretty much everyone was trash on the song.
I mean if you first heard MIA on franchise. I see what's the issue here
What? He’s totally allowed to criticize her verses in that song, yet still praise her earlier work. Yeah it was disappointing hearing her sell out in that song and give a really weak performance when she’s been so unique and talented in the past. That’s completely valid on Fantano’s part
fantano effect: Death of Mumble Rap got 1.75 rating in rateyourmusic lol
MIA was so ahead of her time, it’s unreal. I remember discovering her by accident on a StrictlyGlobal broadcast around 2008, it’s amazing to see what kind of influence her works have had since then.
LONDON, QUIETEN DOWN I NEED TO MAKE A SOOOUUNNDD
Appreciate the Sri Lanka backstory on this🙏🏽
*YESSSSSSS!* she’s such an underrated legend and paved the way for a lot of your fave artists. travis scott fans, pls put respect on her name.

the MIA documentary Matangi/Maya/M.I.A is great too
I remember my older sister playing Bucky Done Gun when I was younger, and thought it was an interesting song (along with Paper Planes). I wasn't old enough to really "follow" music at the time, so that was pretty much it. But then in high school I re-discovered those songs and did a dive into everything else she's done. She's an incredibly talented artist, and has definitely had a huge influence on the type of music I listen to today
this & MAYA are albums so far ahead of their time
This album has aged phenomenally. So fresh, so eclectic, so diverse. Fire Fire, Galang, Sunshowers really stick out to me. In my opinion it’s one of the greatest debut albums ever and it’s Maya’s best album
M.I.A will forever be my OG fave. She's king and queen

M.I.A. is still underrated as hell, thanks for showing this album the recognition is deserves! Her work has really aged like fine wine (except AIM)
We all liked Paper Planes when it came out that year. I was in the used cd section on an electronic store this recent 2020. I spied her Kala album and was so tempted to get it. I wanted to bad but I was out of a job.
I started listening to it online and it is such a banger. Now I'm wondering why I never tried listening to her too much over all these years
Arular and Kala are goated brother
This album was a large part of my childhood and very much helped me in my journey in music. Thanks for reviewing it, Anthony.
Oh god that DieAntwoord side note got me rolling on my sides, fucking brilliant.
She also salts and peppers her mango
I picked this up on CD a few years back at thrift for $2, and it is still the best $2 I ever spent.
I’m so happy you have reviewed this. M.I.A is so under appreciated
Holy shit the timing on this is drop is so perfect, I recently just discovered the rest of this album after playing through Midnight Club 3 and banging out to Fire Fire its so good.

@@norymusic no doubt that it is but M.I.A is extremely underrated within the hip hop sphere and most of her projects with the exception of Kala go under the radar of most listeners

I always get excited when I see one of my favorite albums growing up be reviewed for good classics.
Weirdly, I just revisited this album for the first time in years last week. I first heard this album because of a "what I've been listening to" post by Trent Reznor on the NIN website, and it really captured my attention. I haven't liked any of her subsequent work as much, but this is still an absolute classic.
Love this album, bought it a long time ago and played it to death.
