Diamonds maybe forever but rare it certainly is not. Gold is much rarer and much more valuable. Thanks to a stranglehold of the diamond business and one cleaver marketing campaign, De Beers was able to provide mere mortals with as much diamonds as they want, but at a price. Not a fan of diamonds because after watching the markets for awhile, diamonds tend to loose its value a lot. If anyone is going to buy diamonds, buy an F grade one for flawless.
If it wasn't for De Beers, Botswana would still be the poorest country in the world and South Africa would also be much poorer. Lots of sour grapes from competitive companies that came later but all in all De Beeers have done the world a favour and uplifted 3rd world countries employing millions of people and setting the standards for diamond production, security and marketing.
