  • With the new 6.8 Westerner the company and some gun writers would have you think the two are totally different. But are they? Are they close enough to be interchangeable? Randy has some answers and some cautionary warnings.
And, yes, Randy calls it a "Westerner" rather than a Western, as it is so much hype, that is his way of mocking their hype.
    God bless!

I worked at gander mtn. when I was 24/25, part time for the discounts, I hate to say it but half the people I worked with genuinely didn't know sht about weapons. We had a few people like myself who hunted and shot for fun, but a good amount were pretty clueless. We even had a guy that was anti AR rifles "civilians shouldn't own those"... I'm sorry Randy but, I don't see the connection between the 6.8 Western design engineer & some clown at Basspro giving incorrect advice to some guys dull enough to listen to it. How far do you want to stretch the blame game?
The fact that the incorrect cartridge became jammed in the chamber disabling bolt closure is the way it should be. From what I can see, there are 2 idiots involved in both of those stories, none of which is the design engineer.
I think it's bad enough purchasing differently labelled ammunition than was listed on the barrel of the rifle but, it's worse going around the place telling all & sundry about it. If I were either of those 2 guys, I'd keep my mouth shut & hope nobody found out.

Here's a story to your point. About four years ago I asked a guy at the gun counter at Sportsman's Warehouse House in Albuquerque, NM if they had any Browning X-Bolt Rifles in 280 Remington. His reply was the 280 is an obsolete cartridge. I told him he was wrong and he promptly said I didn't know what I was talking about. I then walked over to the ammo area and brought back three different boxes of 280 Remington ammo to prove my point. I told him he shouldn't speak out of turn and owed me an apology. When he didn't apologize I relayed the same story to the manager who was not only highly apologetic, but took the time to find the gun I was looking for at a Utah store, offered free shipping and 10% off the purchase price. Things worked out in the end, but if I hadn't been so persistent they would have lost a sale.

There is no question the 6.8 out performs the 270 in every way; accuracy, powder efficiency, heavier bullet, more energy at longer distances with a short action cartridge. These fast twist barrels with high BC are the future and here to stay. I am not saying that the 270 is not a wonderful iconic cartridge, but is not in the same league as the 6.8 Western or 6.5 PRC. I don’t understand why so many hunters get so emotional over the 6.8 Western. It is not likely that I will take a 1000 yard deer shot, but is nice to know I can if I had to. We need to take pride in these iconic cartridges, but so emotional as not to see the excellence in these new cartridges shooting high BC bullets.

And, my next gun will be a 308 because I'm not interested in spending twice as much for ammo to get advantages that won't make enough difference to be worth it given my needs as a hunter in the eastern mountains. Unless you are an expert precision shooter the average to very good shooter won't know the subtle differences between a 6.8 and the cartridges that have already been around for 50 years. Its a novelty and a name that sells. 280AI and 7mm mag, even a 30-06 are far more capable. Heavier bullets, larger wound channel and equal velocity. Nobody's going to ethically shoot game over 3 to 400 yards unless you are bench rested and a phenomenal Marksman. If you're talking about nailing paper at 500 yards there are other rounds that will still do that better than a 6.8. @@kyleedwards4420 that is not what I am saying nor is that an ideology for me. All I am saying is they took already tested technologies and adapted them into a new case. That does not mean no calculations were made. In this process more went into the marketing then the actual cartridge design. For example, 375 Ruger was developed with Hornady and Ruger. Engineering went into that. However, Hornady then necked down the 375 Ruger to 308 diameter and now call it the 300 PRC great cartridge, but limited engineering. I don't believe reducing me to a single ideology is any value. I am not saying new cartridges can't come from adjustment to other cases. Some of our best cartridges have come that way. But don't mistake engineering as marketing to sell it. 308 win is a shortened 30-06. Simple concept in there world. Marketing was way harder. Both great cartridges. Trust me more work in many of these cartridges is actually the tooling, components, and marketing. They have to hype up engineering to sell it in the marketing. If they just said ya we to this case and changed the diameter bullet. Now it is the greatest that would not sell. They did the same with the 300 PRC (love the round by the way). But realistically all it is, is a 375 Ruger case necked down to support heavy for caliber 308 bullets.

The headspace on the 6.8 Westerner is 0.084" shorter than the 270 Winchester Short Magnum and with its case dimensions, the 6.8 Westerner will fit a 270 WSM chamber with excessive headspace. Worse, the 270 WSM has a case that is 0.08" longer, so if one is mashed into the chamber of a 6.8 Westerner, the neck can pinch the bullet and cause excessive pressure. It is a formula for confusion and potential catastrophic failure.

Not really a good comparison...one is short action, one is long. The .277 bullet will have a higher sectional density in a relative bullet weight. The 300 win mag is a much larger case capacity yet the 6.8 western is almost matched for muzzle velocity, albeit slightly slower, but at 500 yards the 6.8 western is faster and carrying more energy. After telling my story to a gentleman he said he could get a set of rings that would hold. He was also a gunsmith for Magnum Research so I trusted him. He called me the next day and said he won't touch it because there was a recall on the gun. Brought it back to sportsman wherehouse where I bought it the Moran behind the counter told me just don't shoot the .460 and I'll be fine. After talking to the store manager and had my gun sent in and telling him what his sales person was saying . Went back many times after that that sales person was working in foot wear. Never trust a person in a box store to know what they are talking about most don't.

Wow, after all is said and done they still compare them to 100 year old chamberings, barely edging them. Or using vast amounts of gunpowder and/or "trick" bullets. Find a cartridge with adequate power chambered in a rifle that is comfortable to shoot and carry then shoot, shoot, shoot.

@@guitaristxcore 30-06 you have a point. I don’t much see the point in the 308. It’s too slow for a 30 with modern powder and bullets. There are much better options for a brush gun. I’ve got a 300 wsm I like that only slightly edges out the outstanding 30-06. My wsm is on a Tikka action which I found out was a large action in disguise. Now with a long action bolt stop I load out longer heavier bullets at better speed. However, the 6.8 would make a great lightweight mt rifle as it ticks off a lot of boxes with minimal recoil and way better performance than the 6.5 creed. In shooting the 6.8 I think you would find it more agreeable in a lighter gun than the 30-06 with as good or better terminal performance. This day in age, I don’t see how anyone can afford to shoot anything they don’t hand load for so amo availability, I find to be a moot point.

The law suit is worth reading as is learning about the history of Oliver Winchester and his shrewd business practices. Unfortunately Jamison has been black listed by the big money of the gun kabal. The 6.8 Western cartridge has ballistic Merritt but the jaded umbrella of Winchester, along with how bad they are in making this ammo commonplace, the deal to seal is already evident. No other munition producer is picking this round up. There are better rounds than this 6.8 too. Like the 27 Nosler or a fast twist rebarreled 270 Weatherly like I had built years ago.

6.8 western blows 270 and 270 WSM out of the water, it starts hitting harder than 7mm rem mag with similar weight bullets after a couple hundred Yards, overtakes 300 win mag after around 350yds, even with heavier 180 gr bullets in the 300. It has a whole lot less recoil aswell. I’m not saying everyone should go out and buy one. I’m saying if u actually do your research it’s a hot round that packs a hard punch at distance. What it proves to me is that time hasn't changed. You can put any moron behind a counter. But you can't fake gun knowledge. Reminds me of a accountant behind the counter who thought she knew best about rifles. This was 1980 because her husband had a 7x57 mauser, and a savage rifle marked 7 mm had to be the same. In reality she some how was allowed to sell that rifle chambered 7 mm Remington magnum as a 7x57, but sold the customer 7mm Remington Express ammunition for it. I got a phone call to come as a consultant, and was handed the rifle and ammunition and asked to explain what happened to the rifle and why there customer was suffering from injuries. My answer was out of the gate was( a accountant was allowed behind the counter) than explained the the science to them of any modern day rifle. Was later asked to repeat that science in a court room.

lol.. First, that brass pro employee or employees needs to be fired. Second it's Western, not Westerner. 3rd, it's an optimized 270wsm for long, high bc bullets. Lastly, if you need advice from a gun counter these days and don't know that your rifle should match the ammo, then I'm afraid you're going to have a tough life.

It’s not Winchester’s fault if that happened. There is no problem or unfortunate situation here. Put the right ammo in the right gun. Good lord people.

How in the world is it winchester fault? If you put the wrong round in your rifle that's only your fault. Are you worried about someone putting a .243 into a .308? Or 7mm-08? Or 6.5cm?

I remember a guy local here that years ago shot a 7mm express in a 7 mag gun. Used a hammer to open it.

.243 Winchester is just that. 6mm Remington or the .244 Remington are the same cartridge. The only commonality is the bullet diameter. All 3 rounds use a .243 diameter bullet. Can be confusing.

To me the bass pro guy is not educated I hunt with a 7 mag wby a 7 mag rem can go in my gun the 7 mag wby was created in the 40’s and the rem mag came out in the sixties I recently bought a 6.8 western and got the right ammo people who buy a gun should understand what ammo to buy before they buy a gun I went to Walmart years ago Walmart sales a Weatherby gun that shoots 7 mag rem I asked the guy in the sporting good section if they sale 7 mag wby he said yes but what I tried to sale me were rem mag and argued with me and said it was the same

I do not agree with your assessment. No engineer is responsible for telling a gun owner to shoot the incorrect ammo out of a rifle. Barrels are marked for a reason…ammo is marked, if it doesn’t match…Don’t shoot it! I don’t even blame the salesman for selling the wrong ammo! No one, no where has ever stated or written that the 6.8 W and .270 WSM are the same cartridge! If blame is to be placed on someone for using the wrong ammo, it lies fully upon the owner of that rifle.

  • @joshlower1

ive said this before the 6.8 is not meant to replace the .270 it simply gives us a .277 caliber rifle capable of firing bullets weights similar to a 7mm mag while retaining almost identical performance to a .270. some say you could just put a fast twist barrel on a 270 and get the same result. this is not true. those long bullets will eat into a 270s powder capacity, giving you less speed and less velocity. hence why this 6.8 western has a bit more case capacity than the .270.

What gets me is why on earth would you pick the .277" caliber to make a cartridge when its probably got the smallest selection of bullets available? I am not at all shocked that it came from Bass Pro. I have yet to meet someone knowledgeable at Bass Pro.

Just the same as with 6.5mm a few years ago... and look how companies have started making many different bullets for .264/6.5mm. You gotta start somewhere. Options will increase. The cartridge is less than a year old, new offerings will come based on how popular it becomes.

I have been told that a lot of the box stores especially Wal-Mart will not put people behind the gun counter that knows guns.
They don't want employees to really give advice or information about guns/ ammo out.
It cuts down on there liability.

its the same with 300 blackout and 223 in an AR, if you have both in an AR, you need to be careful not to grab the wrong mag. You cant be dumb with firearms period.

The difference between 6.8 western and 270 wsm is quite obvious. 6.8 western handles heavier projectiles way better. Please do your research before bullsh**ting! At least, say the name right.

Wasn't the 7mm WSM shoulder pushed forward to specifically prevent it from chambering in the 270WSM? Also, wasn't the 280 Rem shoulder pushed forward to prevent it's chambering in the 270 Win? These were basic steps taken a decade ago (WSM) and multiple decades ago to prevent this kind of interference? I've never been accused of under-thinking anything but this seems like a huge oversight by the designers as you point out!
