  • PART 4 - Connecting LCD3 and Flashing Opensource Firmware to the motor
    If you haven't seen Part 1, Part 2 or Part 3 then choose the links below, otherwise welcome back.
    This video guide will take you through how to make up a cable to connect the KT-LCD3 Display. This is needed to configure the Opensource Firmware on the motor. After connecting the display I flash the new firmware on the motor.
    To connect the LCD3 you need a socket just like the one on the end of your current display. I managed to make up a connector using the Y-splitter extension cable that came with my Speed sensor. It was pretty time consuming since this cable only carries 3 wires. I stripped it all the way back and soldered to the ends of the pins. Then I used hot glue and heat shrink to finish it off. This is your best bet so you can easily go back to your old display in case you change your mind.
    Flashing the new firmware is pretty easy, so nothing new there but I did get the RX and TX wires crossed. The cirrect wiring is shown near the end of my video but I will post it in the Wiki soon.
    Just to let you all know, I have been using the firmware for a week now and I can tell you that it is awesome and well worth all the hassle. Note it is still in beta so don't go jumping in unless you want to help with the development.

    Excellent vid!! And THANK YOU soooo much for NOT just showing the correct way to do it. All of your trouble and trouble shooting reeeeallly helps. Many people (me) could get lost down a rabbit hole once it did not boot. Thanks again!

    Thanks for the great videos! I just received my KT-LCD3 to connect to my TSDZ2. Flashing of the display went smoothly, next up is flashing the motor. I did receive a Y-splitter cable with my motor, going to see if I can harvest any plugs from that one for the new display and flashing.
    Also remember seeing your channel some years ago when you flew with Thomas and Paul (also another hobby of mine but too little time haha), small world :)

    Hi great video's, If you dont have the LCD3 but the "standard" vlcd5, can you flash the motor anyway ?
    I would like to be able to go from 48V to 36V on the battery if that is possible

    Is this the firmware with the higher cadence level settings installed to 120rpm cut off instead of 90.

    Great set of videos, I decided to give it a try just because you made this tutorial! Currently waiting for the display and the programmer. Any chance to back up the original firmware to bring the motor, just in case, back to the original configuration? Thanks!

      I too am holding out on this because I am not sure how to reinstall firmware if an error occurs when flashing. any idea @jbalatutube ?

    Hey, thanks for the great videos! Do you leave the lcd connected to the motor when flashing an update?
    I hardwired the connection and I am wondering if my problems updating the firmware on the lcd are caused by the permanent connection to the motor.

    • @jbalatutube
      @jbalatutube  5 років тому

      Yes I do leave it connected. Make sure your cables are short also try using 3.3v instead of 5v

    Can you please share where to put the 5v from USB into? It isn't on the wiki. Having trouble flashing.

    Am I getting this correctly. With this display and firmware you lose throttle control? I'm guessing you also lose brake sensors control?
    Btw, weren't you afraid engine could engage all of the sudden during the flashing and lcd connection issue?

    • @jbalatutube
      @jbalatutube  5 років тому

      Yes you need to hook up your throttle wire down at the motor, but there is a workaround for the brake sensor, the new display doesn't have enough wires to carry all those signals. If you install the temperature sensor then you cant use throttle at all. Don't stress throttle is pretty crap on this motor anyway. They will be implementing cruise control soon so you won't have to worry.

    i ll probably test this issue in future,
    first i ll use a 6.6v zener to use a 12S pack and upgrade the rpm

      Ha ha thanks.. I actually run 10s but tried 14s and no difference in speed. Im already hitting max cadence on the motor and top out around 42km at 112 cadence with 42t front 12t rear and 26 inch tyres.
