- 👉 UPDATED VERSION OF THIS TUTORIAL HERE: • 🔥 *UPDATED* BURN PICT...
In this Cricut Tutorial for Beginners, I'm showing you how to burn pictures into wood with your Cricut! This is an easy, step by step Cricut tutorial that you can use with the Cricut Joy, Cricut Explore Air 2, or Cricut Maker! This is a really cool technique with the Ammonium Chloride that can be used to chemically burn / brand photos, designs, monograms, etc. into wood without a wood burning kit and without a branding iron! This is a GREAT scorch pen / scorch marker alternative!!
UPDATE ON WOOD BURNING!
Hey y’all! Since putting out my wood burning video, I’ve been working with various wooden surfaces for other videos. I’ve found that when the wood has more of a “porous” / splinter-ey feel to it (yes, I just made up that word 😂) even with the thick-it it can tend to bleed a little. A GREAT solution that I’ve found for that is just giving the wood a light sand with something like 220 grit sandpaper until it feels SUPER smooth. Doing that virtually eliminated all of the bleeding! I hope that helps!
🚨 CONTEST IS NO LONGER RUNNING
Ammonium Chloride is relatively safe and the wood you chemically burn with it "should" be food safe after washing off any leftover residue, but please do your own research before attempting this.

I have seen a couple of your tutorials and I just love them. I wanted to share a little tip that I have used many times myself. I see that you tend to create a template to help you to get your image size just perfect for your project, however you delete your template. I do the same thing when I am working in design space but instead of deleting my template, I center my image onto my template then I attach the two and cut the image along with my template. This helps with two things; 1. Placement of my image onto my project
2. I don’t have to cut my stencil off of the carrier sheet, therefore it makes the weeding process a lot easier, for me at least. I also have my entire project covered minus the area that I wish to get the color change.
I really hope that I explained that in an easy to understand manner.
I am a new subscriber to your channel and am looking forward to seeing more of your inspirational projects! Thank you!

Awesome!! Welcome to the Cricut family!! 😊
You’ll love it!
Which model did you buy?
I've been in steel fabricating for 35 years, evolved into building industrial furniture, and now looking for another venture. The craft world has piqued my interest, as I can combine different ideas into my fab and furniture creations. My point being that you, Michael, have given me inspiration with your projects. Keep up the great work and.....Stay crafty, my friend!!!
Oh my golly! So much faster than using regular wood burning equipment!! Never heard of this before!!! You’re a gem!
SO much faster!! Especially for intricate designs!! 😊❤️ Thanks so much for watching, Lynne!!
I loved this. I'm a cricut beginner and this was awesome!!!!!
Amazing! You provide such clarity, thank you so much for the brilliantly presented ideas! Outstanding!
This is by far the BEST DIY I've ever seen!! I loved watching the "burning" appear with the heat! I can't wait to try this! So many ideas running through my head! Thanks 😊
Thanks so much, Amanda!!! That’s so sweet!!

That’s so sweet, Angela! Thank you!! ❤️
Watching you makes my heart smile Michael. Thank you.
You are such a good teacher! I love how you show exactly where you are clicking in design space with your arrows. Your pacing is great. I never have to rewind to try to figure out what you are doing! Thanks! So glad I just found your channel!
Wow, I'm absolutely amazed! Thanks for showing us this cool trick of burning pictures into wood without having to have some expensive piece of equipment. I will try it!!! Please, everyone, protect yourself from the chemicals, whether it be from skin contact or fumes, as I think ammonia can be cancer causing.
I love this! I also love your parchment paper trick. I use that daily, it has made my crafting so much easier.
Aww, thanks so much, Tina!! That means the world to me!
Thank you Mr. Crafty Pants.
Just purchased a Cricut Maker and your videos have given me the confidence to jump straight in, rather than spend houuuuuuurs procrastinating 🙌🏽
Wow!!!! Never could imagine. Thank you for the time you had to research to make this dream come true!!
It was a labor of love! 😆😂 In reality, I think it’s fun running side-by-side comparisons between techniques and materials! 😊

@@mrcraftypants When is the drawing?
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I was able to make a retirement gift for an awesome nurse. I’m so excited to give it to her 😀
I NEVER knew this was even a possibility! SO excited!
Glad this is still here. Knowledge is power. Can't wait to show off to friends and family now. Lol
I love your tutorials. They are very informative. You’re a wonderful teacher. Thank you.
That means SO much to me!! Thank you sooo much!
I'm new to the cricut maker and have learned a lot through this channel and other channels especially. I've done wood burning before, but now I'm thinking of investing in a heatgun.
I love what you did to that door hanger, I just wondering if you can stain the wood after you burned it.
Hi. I stained my wood before, but then did another coat of stain after to help the burn bleed blend in better. So, in my case at least, yes you can stain afterwards.
Thank you so much Danielle for your answer. I'll try to see how it works. Take care and Happy Holidays.
Yes, you can absolutely stain the wood after burning. I’m actually learning the old fashion way of wood burning. For that you can check out Pyrocrafters on UA-cam. 👍
You should never be burning after staining. Chemicals in the stain can produce toxic fumes.
Thick it! I used to use that that stuff when I worked in a nursing home, used to thicken puréed food.
I’m so happy I stumbled across your channel! You are such a vibe and I love how you go into detail about everything making the steps as simple as possible and still accomplishing these amazing results! My Maker will be here any day now and I can’t wait! Now I know where I’ll be going for all the tips and tricks 😉
I love that you use a lint roller to catch the weeded pieces ! I do the same thing!
I saw someone on Instagram do it and now I can’t find their account so that I can give her credit! Lol! I’m about to go on a scavenger hunt! Haha!
Hi! Thank you for the tutorial! Do you have to seal the item after burning it? Also, do you find the solution picks up when you are removing the vinyl, or is it thin enough you don't have to worry?
Ohh my lovely. It worked! Completely blown away. Used food thickener substitute here in France and worked wonders. I am soooo pleased. Got a load of wood slices from farmer to make into trays. Yay :)
Oh wow! I’m so glad I ran into this video. This is amazing 😍. Thank you 😊, you’ve been extremely helpful.
Thank you, Selinda!! I’m SO glad you liked it!! 😊
Mr. Crafty pants I’m so glad I found you thank you so much for all you teach you’re absolutely a beautiful soul ❤️❤️🤍🤍💙💙
Absolutely in love with this! Already have ideas for Christmas!!
Thank you for the tutorial on cricut , seems like a nice way to engrave onto wood, Peace 2022
OMG.... Your my new best friend! Question can you do this on painted wood or just stained? I love this! Now I have to binge watch all your videos
The heat gun will likely bubble your paint. It's a great tool for stripping paint off furniture so I wouldn't recommend it for this.
The gel has to come in contact with the wood grain, so paint is out of the option. However, a light stain works great! 😊
Love it! So happy I found Mr. Crafty Pants!!!
Love how detailed your tutorials are!!
Love watching your tutorial. Once I got my circuit maker, I'll make those projects.
This is a GREAT project idea! Thanks for sharing.
I’ve only been using my Maker for a few months. I recently subscribed to your channel. I’ve watched many videos by others, but this the first time I’ve seen the idea of laying the vinyl down onto the transfer tape. Brilliant! Thanks!
I’m SO GLAD you liked it, Pat!! 😊❤️ Welcome to the Cricut family!!
Such a cool project!! I can visualize so many gifts I could make.
Mind Blown! WOW!!!
You’re so sweet!! ❤️❤️❤️

instaBlaster.
thankyou, you make it easy to understand exactly what to do for this project. Can't wait to try it
Do you seal the wood after you “burn” it? Also do you just wash the ammonium chloride off with soap and water? By the way, this is so very cool, when I first saw what you were doing, I was like no way will I be trying this. Then by the end of the video, I’m like it looks amazing and is so doable! Great tutorial!!!
You can seal it if you’d like! Also, I just used a sudsy rag to wipe mine down afterwards. 😊 One of the things I love about this is how doable it is! It can seem like a lot at first, but it’s really not. 😊
I love this tip-it eliminates the need for emulsion prep
I am so happy I found your UA-cam channel! I have already done the glass etching and ordered the supplies to do this as well as the metal etching one. You explain things so well and go at the perfect pace. Thank you Michael!
Let me just say... I have owned my cricut for almost two years now. Just getting started using it. Why did I wait so long? I was scared to death! Finally just jumped in and started using it. Asked several friends multiple times for help. Let me say this.... I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH SINCE I FOUND YOUR VIDEOS THIS WEEKEND! Thank you so much for all you are doing. I am so excited to try all these projects!!!!
As you were talking I thought “I need to tell him to watch Kim and Garrett’s solution,”. Lol
Wood burning for me was inspired by watching your videos and you detailing the mixture of ammonium chloride and food thickener
I found that the best mixture to avoid the bleeding affect is as follows:
1 - TBSP Ammonium Chloride
8 - TSP food thickener
1/2 cup hot water
Other things to note:
When you mix the wood burning gel, let it stand for 30 minutes to cool down. I store mine in small round sealable containers that I use for mixing paints, etc.
Use (2) brushes when applying the gel. One brush to cover the exposed area to be wood burned. A second brush to go over the area to smooth out the gel evenly, and to remove any excess from the edges of the pattern. This helps to prevent the "bleeding affect" when burning the design.
Lastly, when using a heat gun, leave it on the lower setting (low heat) as opposed to the high heat setting. I've found that using the high heat setting leaves burn marks (which sometimes adds a more rustic look to certain pieces) but not so much to a finer more detailed (desired) finish.
Thanks for the inspiration I’ve created so many unique pieces and they have turned out beautiful and your videos are always so insightful.
Just thought I would let you know they make a pen that does the same thing I think you get it on amazon you trace the stencil and then add the heat
It’s called a scorch marker. 😊 however, you’re not going to really be able to stop the solution from spreading very much with it. With ammonium chloride + thick it on top of a stencil you’re going to get much cleaner lines. 😊
I am so glad i stumbled across your page. I poked at the Circut Maker but I’m on disability and can’t afford it but I’ve learned so much about crafting from you. I’m even part of your community team, LOL Thank you, your the best crafting teacher on YT.
Just an fyi, I was unable to get thickener in Australia so used a paste made from cornflour and boiling water. This works well.
Hi Julie. Can you get the Ammonium Chloride in Aus? The thickener you can buy in Woolworths or local chemists used in baby formula
@@dunvillms yes I ordered on ebay - Australian seller. Didn’t take long to,arrive.
I am totally make that burning solution. THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I love my Cricut, I love woodworking, woodburning, pyrography and now this new potion. xoxo Sandy

Love it. Very impressive. A MUST DO!!!!!
I’ve done this on a bamboo dollar tree cutting board and it worked like a charm! 😍
Thanks so much for teaching this. I just got a cricut for Christmas. My husband thought that I might want to make shirts, but I wasn’t looking forward to that. I made my first project burning a 1x8 pine board. It came out great!

I just FOUND YOU!!! I have been binge watching! I am an Erma Bombeck in a Martha Stewart world! You make videos that make me know I CAN DO IT!! Thank you for being interesting and thorough! I am super excited to try a few things.
I work in special Ed. The moment you said unflavored jello I was like ummm why not think it. BAM that was your next sentence. Love this and thank you for all of this!!
I was wondering if you have ever tried to burn bamboo? Would it work the same as with the wood cutting board? I just discovered your videos and love how informative you are!
Excellent video! Thank you for speaking clearly, for not using music, for not having distractions (pets, people) moving in and out or talking through your demonstration! And I just have to say, HOLY COW! Freaking amazing! I can’t help but wonder what made the original youtuber to think of this, eh? I am blown away! I cannot wait to try this, thanks so much for sharing! I am wondering if you know how long it lasts? Is it debossed or is the area burned engraved like when using a wood burning tooL? At the end you mentioned whether it is food safe or not, according to my findings, food safe is considered less than 95.9%, so in addition to washing off the chemical with soap and water, one might consider using a food-safe sealer just to be safe…but for non-food items, it would be just fine without and additional sealer.
Gosh…I just can’t put into words how excited this technique has me. I paused your video and ordered my ammonium chloride! THANKS! THANK YOU! GRACIAS!!!! 😁
You are so easy to follow and listen to! I am so glad I found you.
This is very cool. I’ve done stain on stain with gel stain, but this adds another tool to the bag.
thank you for making all your projects simple and easy to understand
OMG 😱😱 I’m a beginner like seriously beginner. Your videos makes feel comfortable to do it. Thank you ☺️🌈🇩🇪
Loved the wood burning tutorial.
I just watched your video and have not seen this technique before very interesting. I am new in the cricut crafting department, was told it was a good stress reliever since I am a nurse and the past several months has been very trying. I checked all the products on your list when it came to the heat gun you didn’t specify what kind you have, when it went to Amazon it shows Several, what kind do you actually use? Thank you for being a great teacher you are easy to follow, I just hope I get more time in the near future to Try this out once again thank you
This opens up a whole other way to use my cricut. I’ve done similar with etching cream on glass. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the great lesson. I’ve done wood working my whole life .Not sure about buying a vinyl printer but the method on how to that was great. Thanks for teaching a old dog a new trick. Terry from Florida
Very interesting! Can you put a clear sealer over the design when it's finished for protection? Thanks!
I just got a cricut joy as a bday gift..and I'm learning so much from you
