Are there alternate DIY casings for the headless M8 (esp. given it's gonna be on backorder for a long time)? I feel hooking the Teensy up to a screen and keyboard and reducing it to a non-portable device kills a bit the interest of it.
If you get into trackers at all I would recommend the DAW Renoise. The workflow is really great and not confusing at all. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The most recent update can even run on Raspberry Pi. You can go as low tech as chip tune and as complex as a rompler. My favorite daw by far. I just gotta find a way to use an Xbox with it.

welcome to 2005 :D but for real, LSDJ is a fantastic piece of software that low key inspired not only its own genre of music but also inspired a generation of music makers which then on went to apply that love into other places (M8, nerdseq, elektron stuff (althoughthat's also based on the demoscene)) but unlike the m8 and PE tracker and all of the other modern takes, LSDJ is extremely limited in what it can do, and half the fun is pushing it as far as it can go to break out of that limitation and make 3 meody tracks sound like 10 melody tracks!
Note that the Polyend Tracker has quite a different, "simplified" workflow. Polyend didn't go the "full" tracker route. It's a bit simplified, kind of a fusion between tracker interface and regular linear DAW stuff. For instance much of the power of LSDJ and M8 (ie what makes working with them different) comes from the flexible grooves, tables and arbitrary-size patterns and chains. These are generic tools from which you can implement usual and not-so-usual sequencing features the way you want: - grooves: swing, polyrhythms... (you control how long each step of pattern is) - tables: arpeggiator, time-sync'ed modulations... (you control what each substep of a step will do, be it the note played, filter cutoff, synth parameters, MIDI CCs, etc) - arbitrary-size patterns and chains: looping some chains while others keep evolving, odd time signatures, polymeters (but the song view is made in such a way you can control when the patterns will sync back again, that's awesome from bridge sections) The only thing that prevented me from insta-ordering a M8 is the limited support for polyphony given the price.
The Dirtywave M8 has been an absolute game changer for me. I had never used a tracker before and now I can't put it down, and it has had a very significative influence on my compositions. It's the best machine I own with the Deluge hands down.

I think the P Tracker can be a little too thinky for when I want to sit down and jam. But that same thinkiness makes it absolutely fantastic for sitting down and composing, and being able to find tune all the details with visual feedback at the same time. The tools for using your composition to build a track, with all that visual feedback are amazing!
Looking at the numbers you definitely made a lot of viewers happy by showing this. I too have no warm feelings towards trackers but the results people get are so awesome!
I discovered trackers not too long ago as well, and really REALLY liked them, to the point that I started to think I didn't need anything that wasn't a tracker ... but after a bit, I realized that I preferred them for deliberate composition but still preferred non-trackers for performance and jamming. The Model Cycles and the OP-Z are designed to let you change your music as you play it, in a performance, adding and altering FX and sound characteristics as they happen. You can't do that nearly as smoothly with a tracker. What I'd really like is a hybrid device that normally has an Elektron workflow but where I can switch to a tracker UI at any time.

So, will you get an M8? It is very heavily influenced by the LSDJ and is a single man work of love. He keeps pumping incredible updates and is also very active on discord and in the community. In addition to being portable, it can sample and it has a bunch of high quality synth engines, which the Polyend Tracker does not.
I am a modmaker from the Before internet age and love to play with the LSDJ on my Gameforce handheld . You can remove the gameboy skin/frame to have it fullscreen . Nice job ! Thanks for the video !
Pro tip for using lsdj on a horizontal device; map the L/R buttons to start/select. Lsdj’s controls are designed for the vertical gameboys where you can reach start & select with either thumb. For instance you hold select and tap B to enter cut & paste mode, which is a pain to do on a gba or horizontal emulator.
LittleGPTracker (a.k.a 'The piggy') is basicly the same thing with stereo samples. "Piggy currently supports 8 monophonic 16Bit/44.1Khz stereo sample playback channels. Additionally, the program can drive MIDI instruments (with the gp32 and gp2x a custom MIDI interface is required). All versions are available for free"
I got myself a low cost laptop last year so I could use it while staying with family at Christmas, put a few trackers on it and installed WinUAE (Amiga emulator) so I could try out the original tracker software. All this opens up a world that A few years ago I was barely aware existed.😯😎

Just a quick follow up, I have found LittleGPTracker runs terrifically well on my Q90. All the music I have tried to make sounds like farts in a tunnel, but in spite of that, I am really enjoying it. I have a bunch of Pocket Operator sample packs to keep me from buying any more of them. The project really deserves a bunch of love!
It's great that you fell in love with the LSDJ workflow so quickly. I struggled a lot when first trying to learn it, but It's now like second nature. You for sure have to learn the WAV channel as it's bonkers!
I've got my Anbernic handheld a week ago, and I love it! It feels like a high-quality device in terms of building quality, ergonomics, performance and overall impression. My first retro handheld was the PocketGo, which is awesome too, but a bit outdated, so there is noticable gap between it and modern Anbernic devices. Also I was surprised to see a retro handheld on your channel, I love to watch videos about music gear and beatmaking, but I also love retro gaming stuff, so it's awesome to see combination of these two things in one video)
I got started on trackers and while I wouldn't go back, it was an accessible and fun way to get started with electronic music back in a time where even low end music gear cost thousands of dollars. Interesting concept, and I'm willing to bet that some people are doing amazing things with it. It's not for me though. Edit I got started in the late 80s/early 90s
For those with an original gameboy I'd highly recommend taking a look at Nanoloop. Tried LSDJ which wasn't for me, Nanoloop isn't tracker based so better if you're not into that kind of thing. One version of the Nanoloop cartridge has an actual analog synth built in 👍

You can get other tracker software working on these retro handhelds including connecting it to a teensy 4.1. running m8 headless, making your handheld a m8 for 15$ or whatever you pay for the teensy
Considering your love for Pocket Operators, you should probably checkout Nanoloop next [It's another DAW for Gameboy, but sequencing is grid based, rather than tracker based]. I myself prefer the tracker layout, so I'm right at home with LSDJ and the Carillon (Tracker) editor.
Gotta love Ambernic.. Incidentally - have you ever played Music or Music 2000 on PlayStation? Hugggge nostalgia for me, they were awesome, big recommend!

Got a P tracker and it is fun to use once you wrap your head around it. I also have a M8 on pre-order which I'm looking forward to. If you'd like to checkout the M8 for fairly cheap, look up how to make and "Headless" M8 using a Teensy 4.1 board.
I actually bought the original LSDJ cartridge that you put into the grey game boy . I bought a used grey game boy on eBay for maybe 20 bucks (this was the 90’a) And the lsdj cartridge. It was very cool but programming music, for me, was like writing code. Lol. I loved the sounds, the whole idea of creating music this way via 8 bit gameboy but I didn’t connect with the process.

Good thing you found that tutorial vid, because Real Men(tm) don't read manuals. Srsly tho, I've had a lot of fun with Caustic 3 on my phone. The big thing being that you can walk around with (at least almost) a DAW in your pocket. But fiddling around on a phone touch screen is just not very satisfying in general and sometimes even annoying. This looks like a much more rewarding experience, but alas, it is not for me. I'd need some pretty thick glasses to keep track of things on that screen, which makes me realize why the OP-Z is so expensive. They made it more friendly to ppl with poor eyesight, because a lot of those are middle-aged dudes with mid-life crisis thirsts for the gear they couldn't afford when they were younger. God, now I feel like such a mark. 😅
Yeah the screen is pretty small haha. Although right after filming this I did find out that the emulator can stretch it to the full size of the actual display, which makes it a lot more tolerable to work with. Thanks for watching!
You like pocket operators and legos too so the writing for you to like trackers or programming was on the wall 🙂. I am a computer programmer by profession and over the years I noticed that there is a large overlap between computer programming skills and musicality. Not all musicians have a feeling for programming but quite a lot of them do.

@@FreeBeat that's odd..,given you have certain tendencies (ADHD like) I thought caustic is the best ratio for getting amazing creative stuff done in the fastest way. It takes some time to break the curve, but I have been using daws and trackers for decades and I find something about the workflow with caustics really magical. (Given you change the default skin first 🤣 I am using it on 11ich tablet though). Thanks for sharing your experience

I own the P tracker and it sounds great and workflow may not fit with everyone but once u do it’s valid one of the best samplers

I actually bought the original LSDJ cartridge that you put into the grey game boy .
I bought a used grey game boy on eBay for maybe 20 bucks (this was the 90’a)
And the lsdj cartridge. It was very cool but programming music, for me, was like writing code. Lol.
I loved the sounds, the whole idea of creating music this way via 8 bit gameboy but I didn’t connect with the process.
That's EXACTLY how I thought I would feel about it too, which is why I ignored it for so long. I can't believe I was wrong and I don't really understand why lol. Thanks for watching as always!

Good thing you found that tutorial vid, because Real Men(tm) don't read manuals. Srsly tho, I've had a lot of fun with Caustic 3 on my phone. The big thing being that you can walk around with (at least almost) a DAW in your pocket. But fiddling around on a phone touch screen is just not very satisfying in general and sometimes even annoying. This looks like a much more rewarding experience, but alas, it is not for me. I'd need some pretty thick glasses to keep track of things on that screen, which makes me realize why the OP-Z is so expensive. They made it more friendly to ppl with poor eyesight, because a lot of those are middle-aged dudes with mid-life crisis thirsts for the gear they couldn't afford when they were younger. God, now I feel like such a mark. 😅
Yeah the screen is pretty small haha. Although right after filming this I did find out that the emulator can stretch it to the full size of the actual display, which makes it a lot more tolerable to work with. Thanks for watching!

You like pocket operators and legos too so the writing for you to like trackers or programming was on the wall 🙂. I am a computer programmer by profession and over the years I noticed that there is a large overlap between computer programming skills and musicality. Not all musicians have a feeling for programming but quite a lot of them do.
It's funny, I really didn't think I would like it because of the programming aspect, but the layout of seeing your patterns and chains like that just clicked for me lol. Thanks for watching!

Yes they are clunky but fun when you sync with pocket operators. Allows you to program tempo changes.

@@FreeBeat that's odd..,given you have certain tendencies (ADHD like) I thought caustic is the best ratio for getting amazing creative stuff done in the fastest way. It takes some time to break the curve, but I have been using daws and trackers for decades and I find something about the workflow with caustics really magical. (Given you change the default skin first 🤣 I am using it on 11ich tablet though). Thanks for sharing your experience
