Isn't a tick close to 1/60th of a second which corresponds to the clockspeed or frequency of the cpu or apu? My (probably incorrect) understanding was that the number of ticks per row dictates tempo so a certain amount of ticks per row times a certain amount of rows equals the tempo, and with some more math you can write out triplets by adding or subtracting ticks. It's been years since I messed around with famitracker I probably got everything wrong. The right info was widely available on the various NES and chiptunes forums like 10 years ago but chiptunes fell off for a while and most of the forum discussions are gone. So apologies for half-ass remembering
Honestly I never completely understood exactly what's going on under the hood, but that sounds about right. My bud @DEFENSEMECHANISM knows a lot more about the nitty-gritty and has written some interesting articles about ticks and grooves that you might find interesting! defensemech.com/intense-tech/en/06-groovy-groove-and-tick-tricks-part-1.md.html (I'm having trouble mentioning his channel but here you go!) ua-cam.com/users/DEFENSEMECHANISM
