Update: I've been informed that since version 8, LSDJ is now a free download so you can try out this excellent software at zero cost!
I make all the music on my channel's videos using an original Nintendo Game Boy and a piece of software called Littlesound DJ, or LSDJ as it's commonly known.
Wait, you can make music with a Nintendo Game Boy? Yes that's right. This isn't a tutorial so much as a quick overview of just what's going on when people use these handheld classics to create the nostalgic bleeps and bloops associated with what's known as "Chiptune" music.
There are lots of tutorials out there made by people more expert than me and much better at explaining what to do, but this video is intended as an insight into what that seemingly impenetrable screen of numbers and letters actually means and how people use it to make songs. I hope it's interesting :D

Mad respect for the patientence to put all that stuff in there with the buttons. I suppose it takes hours for a complete Song.

Awesome video, Joe! One little addition, LSDJ is since version 8 actually free (a donation is still encouraged) so anyone just looking to give it a spin can do so with an emulator at zero cost! :)

Not over-complicated it at all. Really interesting and a super helpful primer. I've always wondered how this works and it never occurred to me to try on an emulator first. Thanks Joe.

    Honestly, I needed this overview.
I built a GBA SP from replacement parts, and have been wanting to get into the Chiptune scene.
Currently using FL Studio, and really want to put the song on my channel 16 Bit Drift into Chiptune stylings, so I very much appreciate the direction here.

can you export music from the gameboy to a PC? or would it be easier just remake the song on the PC version of LSDJ?

So, the DMG has the best sound (bass) … ? Is that just via its internal speaker, or is there something else that makes the DMG’s sound better in general?!
And the Color has a more powerful processor (and the Advance has a better processor again?), but their sound is not as good as the DMG … ?!
Is it possible to do Pro Sound mods to the Color and/or the Advance (either the AGB-001 ‘OG’ Advance or the SP) … ? If so, does this make them as good as the DMG, *sound-wise* … ?!
Will LSDJ (or Nanoloop, etc) run on any Nintendo DS … ?! I get the impression it won’t, but just wanted to confirm I had that right?
So many questions!! ☺️ Lol … Thanks for introducing me and others to this whole new world!! 😃👍🏼🙏🏼🎶

The 'music' needs to be mixed in lower volume so people don't have to turn down the volume so much they can't hear you talk. Good idea for video but poor execution.

Appreciated. This is an older video, I've got much better at engineering the sound on these videos now thankfully
