Confirmed 1999. And duh, if I actually listened all the way through, I'd have recognized the Canyon music. Hey, is that Chip Webster in front of the line?
this is some really good stuff. however, something that really bothers me is how some lines require all the drums to be at one level. it blows my mind that a corps as good as this one or cadets, or any other that follows suit would think it smart to do so in that it forces every individual player to have their own technique adapted to where the drums are placed, instead of having one technique for the entire line. fit the drum to the player, not the player to the drum
I marched another corps this year, and still remember seeing these guys in the lot for the first time. The rest of my corps remembers too, as I shat upon myself after watching these cats straight up throw down. You couldn't even look the cymbal line in the eye lest your soul be ripped out of your body and made seks to.
It is an issue because it impacts your sound quality as the height you play to the drum changes the angle your sticks strike the drum head. The lower the head, the sharper the angle, the shorter the sound. It's all a preference thing in the end from the person instructing the line; however, keeping the drums at the correct height for the people playing the drum would help overall. Being taller, it SUCKS having to stretch my hands down, get a slice, and play like that.
anyone know what the excercise they're playing at 1:30 is? Im pretty familiar with most of SCVs warm ups but don't think I've ever heard that. SCV '99 is my fav. show, very glad to see these vids!
This is a long shot, but there is a snare drummer who aged out in this line who I met @ an early SCV camp for 2000 who has a video of lines warming up in Allentown in '99. I'd love to see that video because it has some good footage of Regiment, where I marched. If this gets to you, can you upload that video or send it to me? Thanks.
Drum height isn't that impactful on technique as you think. I've marched with dudes who are 6' 6" and gotten reviews that the drums were at an extremely comfortable height despite the fact we adjusted the drums lower for the 5' 5" guys in the line. If it's not an issue, don't make it one. And drum height, really isnt. It just looks gross when you see a snareline looking like a snaggle tooth from the front. If you have an impressive snareline, wouldn't you want it to look good too?
If they're playing crazy tight notes, I couldn't care less what the visual appearance of the drums looks like. Maybe that's why I watch 90s DCI videos, it lacks all the foolish dancing that seems to be en vogue lately (and in lieu of playing cleanly).
I wish this vid (which is awesome btw) really conveyed what the sounded like live. They were incredible.
@DrmrGuy1979 Her name is Reiko and she's Japanese. Very solid tenor player. Rarely makes a mistake.
Did she march elsewhere before SCV?
Kiwanis Kavaliers '96~'97.
Her name is Rieko, not Reiko.

@DrmrGuy1979 I'm glad you like it. These guys threw down big time.
The sirens you hear at about the 8:20 mark are the police coming for the SCV drumline for ballin' out of control.
sweet baby jesus. awesome vid!
It is. Don't see too many lady tenor players. Very cool.
March with her. The real deal.

I’m trying to figure out how someone got a hold of my video haha. I’m pretty sure I shot this. I even hear my voice.

Listen to how much they slow down in the rep that starts at 0:25
@MHRoe1984
I think that's called THE RAM. But I'm not totally sure.
You are correct. It was the result of an impromptu fighter pilot session one night at Space Park Drive. Bass and tenors made up their own splits.
