People living in poverty sometimes get jobs at cruise ships so that they have a place to sleep at night. How they treat their workers is literally indentured servitude.
Just as you shouldn't take a cruise's facade at face value, you shouldn't take a comedy show's take on cruises at face value. The truth is much more complicated than what Hasan is pushing. Some examples: Take his "low wages" argument. Average income in the Philippines is $3k. Cruise lines start them at twice that while dropping their living expenses to basically nothing. No-one is forcing Filipinos to take these jobs; they *want* them. If these cruise jobs went away, that would be a very bad thing for them. Take the "murder is easy" argument. This is a classic red herring. It sounds like something awfully important, but it doesn't really happen. On the legal side of things, crime reporting gets complicated, but people don't generally go on cruises and commit crimes. As for the sexual assault/groping incidents mentioned, those are awful, of course. That said, he provides no meaningful statistics about how likely you are to have your kids groped on a cruise ship vs all the other places where kids get abused on places that aren't cruise ships. Take the "OMG kids are drowning" argument where he talks about a 5-year-old kid who drowned in an unsupervised pool. There's a good argument to be made for having lifeguards. That said, most ships have some not-small signs saying that you swim at your own risk, and that children should never swim un-supervised. I would never let a 5-year-old child of mine swim un-supervised even with lifeguards on duty, nor would I take a 5-year-old on a cruise in the first place. Take his point about sulphur dioxide. This is a legitimate point, but the comparison is somewhat suspect. Cruise ships tend to cruise out at sea and emit most of their sulpher dioxide out there, where there aren't a lot of people. Sulphur dioxide is chemically reactive, meaning that unless you have a lot of people living very close and downwind of the exhaust tubes producing it, they're not breathing it in. This is why there's been a big push to reduce the sulphur content in car fuels. At sea, this chemical has much more space to dissipate and dilute to safe levels. This is still a problem, but it's not as bad as Hasan makes it out to be. Hasan's take on cruises is entertaining, and there are actually some good points in there, but the view he presents suggests that his research was an exercise in confirmation bias in support of a hatchet job rather than a credible attempt to understand what he's criticizing. His NYC-centric worldview gives him a distorted view of this topic and the people involved, and he seems more interested in presenting outrage than truth.
All that said, here are some personal criticisms I have of cruise lines: 1. They pack too many people on the big ships. This makes it hard to get seats to the shows and turns boarding and disembarking into a giant cattle drive through one or two narrow hatches. You'll be standing in line for a lot of crap. If you can, choose to cruise on smaller ships. 2. There are a lot more "extra fee" services and activities on ships than there used to be. You don't have to use them (and I suggest you don't in general), but they take up a larger portion of the ship than they used to. 3. Every port of call includes a giant tourist trap with overpriced crappy tourist stuff, and you have to walk a good half mile or so to get through it after you leave the ship. Roatan is so bad that you have to pay $40 bucks per person just to get away from the tourist trap and go to a town where people actually live. All that said, I still love cruises for a lot of reasons, including: 1. Unless you dine in one of their extra fee restaurants, the food is all included and very good quality. 2. You don't have to do your dishes, make your bed, or do any chores. 3. You can get away from it all and unplug from your phone and email. 4. The scenery changes, and many of the sights / ports are worth seeing (especially on Alaska and European cruises). 5. The weather is generally awesome, especially if you're escaping winter to go on a tropical cruise. 6. There are plenty of things to do if you want to stay busy. 7. You don't have to do much of anything except show up for the lifeboat drill and get off at the end.
There's still a very broad, "very-satisfied-with-every-joke" quality to the delivery that I could do without (maybe the editing?), but Hasan is a great host and the writing/production team are insanely talented.

I did three contracts with Royal Caribbean Cruise line. Most my female work were being sexually harassed by their mangers and highly positioned staff! No one had the right to complain. Japan is the most responsible cruise lining country. Been on one, even an unwelcome physical advance at a woman will get you airlifted off straight to jail or your country 😂 True story.
In 2007, a group of people came to our cosmetology school from the cruise line and talked about how wonderful it would be to travel abroad and get paid. When asking them questions, they would never get to the point and give vague answers. I thought it was suspicious that they brought agreements with them, and tried getting people to sign. These people were acting shady. I turned down the offer, not hearing anything about the business from other people. Other girls got hooked. Learning about this dark side of business makes me thank the Lord for my brain. Boy did I dodge the bullet. My intuition did not fail. Free cheese is only in a mouse trap.
Woah. I'm from Ukraine. Lots of Ukrainians work on cruise ships. I myself considered taking the job. You must work 10+ hours every day without days off. Contracts are 6-8 months long. And if you're a first timer, you often have to buy your plane ticket to the port of boarding with your own money. That's just insane. Oh yes, the salary. I was looking for a position of a waitress. So it's around 900 bucks fixed per month plus tips (approx. 500$). So you earn around 1500 bucks but you'll be imprisoned. And the saddest thing of all is that we agree to do this because in Ukraine average salary is 300 bucks a month. Pathetic
Hear you, I'm from Hungary, lots of Eastern Europeans work on these cruises. I've been thinking about them too at one point, but there are a thousand and one issues with them, so I've decided thanks but no thanks. Unfortunately, until there are people desperate enough to work in these inhumane conditions, nothing will change.
@@firegodlive Not exactly. I live in Kyiv, the capital city. Average wages here are twice as high as in comparison with the rest of the country. I decided I'd better stay home, and earn my 600-700 bucks, than be enslaved. Besides, if I want more money, I can always start working 12 hrs a day, 7 days a week here.
Wait, so you work like a dog for 6 months and return home with roughly 2.5 years worth of salary? 6 months is $9,000. Let's pretend that you have obligations back home like a family to support, and have to send $300 per month home also. You have virtually no living expenses on the ship, so anything else you spend is mostly optional. And if it's your first time your gonna drop $600 on a plane ticket from Kyiv to Tampa. So after 6 months you return home having paid all of your bills at home and you have $6600 dollars in your pocket. That's almost 2 years of average salary. Even if you live in Kyiv where the average salary is $700 you still end up coming home with $4200 which is enough to live off of for 6 months. You could either spend 6 months at home chilling with your family, or kick start a business. This still sounds like an amazing economic opportunity. To put this into perspective for Americans. The median monthly wage in the US is $3,900. If a cruise line was offering almost $20,000 a month to work on a cruise ship would you take it? That's almost $250,000 a year. That puts you well into the top 10% of earnings in the US. Doctors and lawyers would be quitting their professions to go work on cruise ships. I'd let them lock me up in a dog kennel and eat kibble for 6 months for that kind of money! 😅
@@nickfotopoulos5323 basically, yes. But there are some other financial issues that have to be dealt with before departing, of course, like medical checkup, US visa, etc. On average, you need 1000-1500 dollars to get you set for work on a cruise ship. One-bedroom apartment in Kyiv can cost from 50 to 70K US dollars, so roughly you have to complete up to ten contracts to buy it. But again, you are absolutely right - lots of people opt for the grind.

whenever you see a humongous example of consumerism and capitalism , if you look deep into it, you will find a lot of workers being exploited.. human greed knows no bounds
While compared to US standards, yes these workers are exploited. When compared to the standards of other countries, working on a cruise ship provides the opportunity for them to raise their economic status, and workers are grateful. If cruises raised prices in order to raise worker wages & conditions to normal US standards, two things would happen: 1) Less people would cruise, reducing the number of cruise jobs available, and 2) Cruise ships having to pay higher wages would only hire American, Canadian, UK, and Australian workers, to provide the most fluent experience for guests. Those Filipino workers would be out of a job and back to even lower paid jobs with even longer hours in their home country.
@@dann952 Ye, its always important to remember that.
All that said, here are some personal criticisms I have of cruise lines:
All that said, I still love cruises for a lot of reasons, including:
This has aged well. FML.

Wait, doesn't that mean you make crazy good money for the cost of living in your area?

"Human greed knows no bounds." How are you different? Do you pay more than the asking price? Do you sell things for less than you can get?

A cup of Tea, greedy humans are destroying our planet. There is no need for cruise ships
Destroying the oceans? How? Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with what destroy means.
If you don't need a cruise ship, don't sail on one. Where comes your authority to say "there is no need for cruise ships"? Thank goodness you're not in charge of anything.
Cruise ships are not the reason the oceans are dying. Our plastic, our mass over fishing, and our pollution is what is doing it. Im not denying Cruise ships environmental damage, however it is negligible compared to over fishing.
@@morphkogan8627 someone that studies environment knows that over fishing is a problem, that doesnt take away from the damage cruises have on the environment. Why pour more gasoline on a fire?!
this is really depressing. getting to know these problems and do nothing about it feels really disgusting.
Kudos to all OFWs. Overseas Filipino Workers..
Also, new camera angles-love that!
What are overseas Indonesian workers called ? Oiws?
Even though your episodes are always a little depressing Hasan. I love that they challenge regular citizens to take a stand and make a difference. You inspire so many around the world
Wow Hasan Minhaj was about a year in the future. Now given what we know about Covid-19, I don't think anyone will ever go on a cruise again.
Even discounting the ecological problems, a cruise ship is an unsanitary miniature Brave New World challenging Cthulhu in his own domain, and I've never understood why a person would willingly board one.
And do not neglect TIPPING! Tipping will cost you another 20% on top of your "cheap" cruise fare.
I love that Hasan’s comedy is the perfect mix of informative, real, depressing and funny. It’s like life as a comedy act where you actually learn something at the end of it all.
bro! keep using your hand gestures, it is your versatility and uniqueness as an entertainer. May God bless you and Peace.
Can I ask a question just out of curiosity I want to know. Your name is Arabic but you said May God Bless you and Peace instead of allah al hafiz salam. Are you Christian or Muslim and just choosing to translate the blessing into English? I'm Catholic, just wondering because I also love language.
@@adammacleod925 God, Allah, Rab-ul-Alameen, HE has many names, 100 names in Islam. Many nations that knows Islam, they call Him by many names in their native tongues, but it is how I am specifically saying Allah or God, if the first letter is in 'Caps'. As you have not used caps for 'A' in Allah. Our Al Quran (Holly Book) is in Arabic, but it is being translated in many languages for the nations of world to understand, by the scholars of different nations which converted to Islam. If we see the translation of Al Quran in English, where ever we see the Word Allah or God (In Bible), the first letter is in 'caps'. Thus having first letter as caps it is being shown for most and every respect to Him and only Him.

I apologize Muhammad I didn't even know that I hadn't capitalized Allah, I apologize to Muslims and to God for my mistake. Thank you very much for your answer, brother :)
@@MuhammadHamzaRana Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't God/Allah have no gender in mainstream Islam? It's not an anthropomorphic entity, as far I learned in college.
I highly commend the team for the way they have crafted the story and Hasan for his intelligent, yet humorous presentation. This is really an eye-opener!
COVID-19 gave this video a whole new level of how bad cruises are. #DiamondPrincess
Not to mention the cost of damage cruise ships are causing just in Venice.
Greed is the cause, cruise ships are just one of the many problems. You can't sit down anywhere in the square unless you are seated at a restaurant serving stuff at massively hyperinflated rates.

it was enough though for a sneak peak, we can do the research, it made me laugh his point there was well made... lolololol
Hahah yeah especially since most workers suffering from assault are women
My contract stated that if I died from wrongful death, my family would receive $80k. I'm sure there was fine print to it, but I remember joking about it with my mom before I embarked not understanding how likely that could have been.
Hi I'm Ri that’s horrible but I am glad you are alive!! Did this episode resonate with you??
@@shelbyb543 It did! I just uploaded my own video explaining why I resigned and cited a lot of those reasons mentioned in this video.
The fact that I was scared to do it because of backlash or putting myself on Disney blacklist sucks but that's how they keep all this contained.
This was such a great video, I'm so glad my teacher told me watch this for homework.
I wanted to go on a cruise until I heard of the horror stories. I'll be damnit if I go overboard because of faulty railings crashing into one of those trash islands they cause by all those illegal dumpings.
It's not a faulty railing until your significant other asks for ice and while you're out he grabs the tools and then gets rid of them...and then you a few miles seperated from the evidence. That would be how it becomes "faulty."
Ryan Springer note to self: DEFINITELY don’t piss you off on a cruise...
@@asdlogician6536 haha. I honestly couldn't do something like that but I'm sure these "accidents" as they are reported have a lot more to the story.
@@RyanSpringer1984 Um I guess🤔 You do know that accidents happen all the time. Business do all they can to save money by "cutting corners". Not saying that I can't enjoy a cruise, but in this life you just never know.

Love you man! Awesome as always ❤❤❤❤❤
I love this! My wife loves to go to sea. I won’t go, never have. Almost had me talked into a Mexico trip but COVID-19 came along and the happy passengers got stuck aboard for weeks. No way in hell, never.

Took our first two cruises last two years. If I had known this I would have never taken it. Will never happen again:(
@Luna EB he said the company IS registered in miami.. but the cruise ships are registered in Panama/Bahamas
Amarendra Mishra correct. Cruise company’s register their ships in smaller countries as it avoids taxes and such. (As the video stated @ 11:20)
@Luna EB registered in Malta and Bahamas
Good, you should be staying home and raising your children you vagrant.
@@notj5712 funny you should suggest so as I'm a stay at home mom of two kids but we travel more in one year that you could dream of in your whole life;) last two and only cruises we ever took were for our kids birthdays. Done and won't do again. Still got Africa to explore
Cruises; nature's way of saying "Your children paid for this trip because they want their inheritance NOW".
Graphics and FX team once again hitting it out of the park.
Carnival actually does have lifeguards. I worked for Carnival for four years and was the Project Manager for the lifeguard program. We put them on ships in 2017. They're called "Aquatic Attendants", but they are fully trained as shallow-water lifeguards. I worked on this project for two and a half years before we finally got them on the first ship. Money was definitely a reason that it took so long but thankfully we kept fighting and were able to get them. Lives have been saved since.
I recently went on Carnival and did not see a lifeguard. Don't know if they were hiding with the salami :)
@@dillibaje they don't wear traditional lifeguard outfits and they aren't in a lifeguard stand. They walk around the edge of the pool. They should be in dark blue long sleeve drifit type shirts unless they changed it since I left. They're also the ones at the top of the slides controlling traffic. They rotate between the slides and the pool.
So does Royal Caribbean.
@@SupaYoda correct. They're actually called lifeguards on Royal. We used the same company to train them
They have lifeguards everywhere, to me it's still a nice time and at the end of the day when you leave the different ports, you're glad to be back on board enjoying yourself. I've never had a bad cruise, it's all in what you make of it.
This has probably happened elsewhere in the world but very recently there was an online add that seemed to be concerned about mental health issues stemming from C19 restrictions and limitations on nearly every aspect of normal lifestyles we were long accustomed to. A list of problems were paraded to help folks identify with negative aspects of their C19 lives.... and the bright and cheery solution was to go on a nice inexpensive (relatively) relaxing cruise with other stressed out C19 survivors. The world really has gone nuts.
As someone who watches a lot of true crime, I would never go on a cruise. They're notorious.
When making only 1.80 an hour, the kidnapping/human trafficking side hustle becomes necessary to pay the bills.
chokinonashes61 Where can I find this show or whatever it is you’re talking about? Specifically about cruise ships
