i have met lee before such a nice guy but i will never forgive him for introducing me to your channel the hours that ive spent watching videos love the content
Thank you very much for this video. I started modifying my two Mora spoon knives a few days ago. I don't use power tools. So this video is very educational. The movement of the file is the best tip for me. Thanks so much.
I did this with just hand tools. After taking off the bulk of the metal with a file I used sandpaper on a mouse pad to blend and convex the blade. Worked really well.
It looks so easy watching you do it, Lee. I’m sure you won’t remember your scorp I tried to re-grind after dropping it and chipping the edge! In the end I had to send it to you to undo all the ‘work’ I had done. Thanks for your skill, good nature and top notch tools. The re-grind you did is still going strong, and now I can see how ‘easy’ it was for you to do 😂. Worth every penny.
Definitely another winner! As a newcomer, I still struggle with proper sharpening, and find this video to be quite helpful . I have micro-bevels on a double-sided hook knife, and was concerned about ruining the blade if I lost those. If I understand Lee, the performance will only improve if I indeed manage to round the back of the blade. This seems to explain, at least in part, why I tend to get chip out and chatter as I approach the lip of the spoon. Thanks again for helping me to form a better idea about how to properly shape the tool.
Hi David, indeed sharpening definitely comes with time and lots of practise. I have dedicated sharpening videos on my channel you should check out and worth checking out this page on my blog where I list all my tutorials in subject order - zedoutdoors.com/video-tutorials
I have the same knife, and I thought the chatter was just a dull blade and a stupid user. This gives me hope! And great that @Zedoutdoors and Lee included some h&s, we are much less cavalier about that stuff than people used to be. This makes the video complete. Thanks!
Zed, yet another good one 👍 Lee is something else isn't he. I know this one was a year ago but always well worth watching and you can learn quite a lot. Good sensible 👍 advice that's worth knowing about and easy enough for anyone to be able to do for themselves. Wish you well mate 👍 and of course Lee if you could pass it on for me please 🙏. I know he had a bit of a rough patch I while back, I certainly hope he's all good now. Thanks again Zed. Les.
Sincerely appreciate the kind words Les and indeed Lee is a treasure trove of knowledge, very humble about it too. I will pass on your kind sentiment to him when i next see him which should hopefully be very soon. Take care my friend ~Peace~
Will be doing this to mine. Hand tools only, so might take a while, but would probably be the safer option, for me and anyone else straying close to me haha. Thanks for the vid.
Fantastic insight to Lee”s working. Definitely worth trying. I’d really like to see Lee hand sharpen an axe if possible. Great work as always Zed ~Respect
Great video!! This one was so good you might consider doing a series of home made/ home modified tools. Just a thought, thanks for the great content. Cheers!
It could work on a two sided hook knife, but generally speaking i'd advise not to attempt this process with that as it could be quite dangerous ~Peace~
Thanks for showing us this adaptation ,I've just got a mora 164 ,so will definitely have a go making it better i like the dowel system you use thats another gr8 tip cheers . Greetings from Wales ive liked and subd you .
Sincerely appreciate the kind words and chuffed to hear you found this video useful. Also sincerely appreciate the sub and hope you enjoy the many other videos I have on the channel ~Peace~
Great video as always. Your videos are both helpful and inspiring! Thanks from a longtime subscriber. I wouldn’t mind seeing a video where you carve a spoon or some other green wood utensil!
Amazing as ever, I did have a couple of queries. I have a hook from another maker and the inner bt is very convexed, would you recommend grinding that down? Also on the sorby is that an extra block you've added to the back plate to give more flex in the belt above? I'm a big fan of all that you's do and so generous with your time, true gent's
That is weird, as an ideal inner should be concave, so the friction between the hook and the hook knife would be reduced to minimum. But this kind of spoon knives are not easy to be made, and will be expensive, usually only professionals buy them. That's why the inner is flat for 95% of all spoon knives. But in any case, the inner can't be convexed 👍 Is not too easy to modify it from convex to flat, as you have to be very careful regarding the edge. If you can afford, buy a good flat inner hook knife.
@@soundtracks6656 must of my hooks are hollow ground or tram lines as there sometimes called. The hook I'm actually referring to is a twca cam. I was wondering if it would be worth doing and how to go about doing it. I've seen a drill press and a conical stone used before, but I can't afford the money or the space for that. Was looking for alternative. Thanks for the reply 😁
Was thinking Drill and sanding tube or the top of the Sorby OR fashioning something to my grinder... Or good excuse to buy a lathe (rabbit hole I'm not ready for)
Hi Kevin I appreciate your kind words and for watching. I have that issue with one of my spoon knives as well, where the inner bit is slightly convexed due to the bending of the steel. You can most definitely grind that down, just got to make sure you don't over heat the steel and that you dont go near the edges ~Peace~
Instead of the drill press you could try a dremmel for a more compact freehand option to hollow grind. As long as the blade is plenty thick enough so what's left isn't weak, quite a lot of force can be applied through the longer handle of a twca cam.
I heavy 3m polishing belt will remove those bevels in short order, and if you spray it with water while doing so...there's no chance to damage the temper. They sell them in multiple grits. Took me more time to change belts than it did to polish out my spoon knife...and there was no hand polishing at the end.
New subscriber for both Zed, Lee and Chris. So chuffed I found you guys. Seem like a good bunch and when I open my Christmas present to myself on Christmas (full set of carving knives plus 2 spoon knives), I'll be seeing how I can modifying the hook knife to look like this. All the best to you.
A sincere pleasure to be connected and thank you so much for your kind words. Excited to hear about your new set of tools, hope they serve you well and that these videos help you in your journey. Stay well my friend and happy carving ~Peace~
Thank you kindly dude and alas I don't remember exactly what compounds they were, so worth messaging Lee through Instagram (link in description) ~Peace~
nice! I was already planning to do this to my hookknife this week. Now I will no better what to watch out for. Can you ask Lee what kind of backplate he had on the sorby? I`m lucky I got the same. But I dont have that little block on the platten. (behind the belt).
It's a custom made platten but the Sorby knife platten should do a similar job, you just need to bring the belt forward slightly to create a little bit of slack belt to help with the convexing.
@@leeslightwarriorsunited4502 thx! For the quick response I've got the nornal one and the thicker one for knives. So that will be fine. I also want to hollow grind it with a ball rotary grinder bit. Like Sean Hellman wrote in his book. Any experience with that? Is there enough metal to do both?
@@Ocinbub on the newer mora's I'd say hollowing it as well would makeit to thin, there's not much metal there to begin with so you only want to take a minimal amount off the outside. Hollowing only really helps make sharpening a little easier, thicker blades might tolerate it being ground in but ideally it wants to be forged in during production.
Great . Sehr instruktives Video. Sowohl vom erklären als auch von der Demonstration als auch von der Kameraführung aus meiner Sicht einfach perfekt. Do you recommend to do the same process with your Chisels ?
Thank you for yoru kind words, regarding doing this with a gouge. It all depends on the type of gouge as they are many varieties ~Peace~
Thanks for answering.
You are right: I meant a hollowed Gouge not a straight Chisel.
Do you already have a video about this?
How well would this work for the double edged Mora blades?
Hi Andrew, it would work for that too, just got to be careful wth both edges ~Peace~
Personally I'm not a fan of the double edge so I'd pick my favourite and convert it so a single edged knife as pat of the process.
The blade is not tempered? Or did you heat it to remove the temper
As mentioned in the video, the process was carried out in a way so as not to affect the temper of the blade ~Peace~
