I’ll say this about my Blundstones: I’ve had the 585s for 3 years, I treat the leather once a year with a beeswax and mineral oil mixture. I’ve worn them every day October-April for those 3 years and I’m around 260-270lbs. I’ve yet to wear through the TPU layer, they’re practically waterproof, and the lining is worn almost entirely through on the big toe and 5th metatarsal, but the leather has held perfectly. I’m not defending them against the Red Wing, but for a “one-time-use” boot, they’re exceeding my expectations because I suspect I still have several more years of great use, which is unheard of for a fat bloke like me.
Hmmm as I touch my chin and say "interesting".
I had trouble finding the difference between the 585 and 500/550. Do you know what the difference is? Thx.
@@RogerLoera The 500 is the original series with no lining in stout brown. The 550 and 585 are the classic series which has an inner lining. The 550 is the walnut brown and the 585 is the rustic brown. It’s better to get the classic series with the inner lining for a few bucks more.
happy you made this vid, was one of the people requesting for it🤩
Wedge soles are really quiet on concrete and asphalt. Great for sneaking around and they're super comfortable.
Excellent video brother!!
I own both Red Wings with the wedge sole as well as Blundstone 550s. I have to say, the Blundstones provide a lot more grip in a variety of circumstances. I have beat the crap out of my Blundstones working on cars, trudging around the snow, walking in the rain, you name it. They just continue to perform well. I should add, I have never conditioned them in the 3 years I have worn them. With the cheaper leather, I have found that the less you do to them, the better. They are a lot more like shoes than boots though, so keep that in mind. For riding motorcycles, you'll find me in the Red Wings no matter what. I get the feeling that the Blundstones would not protect you much if you took a spill.
Really want to see the Jim greens compared to these.
Would be really curious to see cut open some of the more rugged RM Williams boots. You always mention them as a dressy boot but their Gardener and Chromexcel Rigger Commandos look really tough!
It would be really cool and helpful I think if you did a video maybe going into the pros and cons of the different leather offerings by some of these boot brands, in regards to durability, care requirements etc, almost like a stats and ease of care type video
These blundstones have been my favorite ever since i started wearing them. A slick look compared with optimal comfort. They might not last too long, but since they’re basicly dress boots, that ain’t completely unexpected.
I’ve been wearing Blundstones since the late ‘90 after a colleague who’s worked in Australia recommended them. I’ve been through a lot of pairs over the years, originally the 500s, then swapped to the 550’s and the square toed dress boot. I’ve never noticed the quality going downhill after they moved production abroad (I think my first pair or two were made in Australia), they’ve always been very hard wearing and comfy. I have red wing boots with the wedge sole and I’d say the Blunstones grip better in almost all circumstances, and especially on ice. I have four pairs of Blundstones currently, one being the newer ‘all terrain’ boot with the Vibram sole. They’re a little harder on the feet at first and I found the boot just a little tighter than my ‘classic’ models, but very good. I’m not sure I really need the Vibram sole, but the boot is generally excellent and apparently slightly more waterproof.
Overall, I’d like to try the red wing Chelsea boot, but I’ll always have a pair of Blunnies on the go. They’re just so comfy!
Totally unrelated comment - got my Rose Anvil x Nicks ND3's last week and they are FANTASTIC. Love them!
It would be great if you also examined Tecovas Chelsea’s with a wedge sole, look just like the Red Wing in this video
I would have loved to seen Jim Green's chelsea boots included in this comparison. JG makes a really nice chelsea boot! Maybe better value than the Red Wings or Blundstones?
I have the RW and JG outbacks. I think the uppers are on par, my JGs are the tan nubuck and rw are ebony harness. The JG has a full leather lining which I think RW should have for the price. Synthetics or not, the RW is hands down the more comfortable boot. Without an insole, the JG are stiff like boards and since it’s not a leather lasting board and any type of filler, they don’t conform and are therefore just not comfortable underfoot. With a good insole they’re great though.
If you had to have one boot for a zombie apocalypse, what would you choose? I'd like to see a survival/work boot series.
Probably the new whites drifter 2.0
He has a three boot collaboration with Nicks for this very thing
Gucci Slides
Any 10 inch PNW logging boots.
He did exactly that video with that premise within the last year
Im curious to your thoughts on Samuel Hubbards, any plan to do any vids on them? I just ordered a pair of the 24 Seven 2.0’s since I like the idea of a Chelsea but with a side zip. Great video as usual!
I have had both Red Wing Chelsea Ranchers and Blundstones. I have beat the hell out of the Blundstones, wore them in rain, snow, muck and they just keep on working. The Red Wing looked a lot classier, fashionable, but not nearly as comfortable. Sold the Red Wings and kept the Blunnies. Also had the Redbacks. They were nice, but did not fit me as well as the Blunnies. Been wearing Blundstones for 16 years and think they are the most versatile boot/shoe that I have ever owned.
Received my new Rose Anvil leather belt in black 1.5” today.
Top quality! Nice soft and flexible rides on the waist without pinch points like stiff leather belts.
👍
I second this!
Not sure it’s an either or question. Ended up getting both-500s & Classic Chelsea in Ebony Harness. They’re very different boots, and as you pointed out, at different price points.
I would like to see you compare the Grant Stone Ottawa's to the Alden Tanker's. I found the Ottawa's when I was looking for an alternative for the Tanker boots and they are half the cost which is nice. I would like to see a vs battle between the two brands and styles.
I have both of these boots and love them both and wear them both equally! But, if given an option to grab one, I’d probably pick the Red Wings. It’s clear they’re built better and have better materials. Also, they’re resoleable and that’s the biggest plus for me. And the RWs are just so much better looking.
What Blundstones do have is that there is no break-in period and are instantly likeble.
I don’t have the red wing Chelsea but I do have their heritage chukka which I suspect is probably made like the Chelsea. What you say about the leather upper is so true. It’s gorgeous, tough, thick and has a nice patina almost immediately. I really like their heritage chukka.
I think it may depend on which heritage chukkas. I have several different heritage chukkas and they’re all built on the leather slab. I don’t know about the weekender Chelsea though. Two of my favorites are Irish Setter Chukka 9852 built on #8 last with black Klondike leather and Classic Chukka 3151 built on #210 last with Black Mesa leather.
I was buying blundstones for nearly 2 decades, replacing them usually every 4-5 years with near daily use, the sole cracking or worn through. I loved them but your early cut-in-half review has warded me off of them with an eye opening view of their construction.
Im on a pair of redbacks now, very comfortable, but they are a much chunkier sole.
In a very impulsive buy, I backed the 8000Kicks chelsea boot kickstarter which is about to ship. Will you be getting/cutting this vegan/hemp boot and doing a review?
I went back and forth on which of these to get for an upcoming trip to Iceland and also general winter wear. I ended up with the Blundstones (HB exclusive ones) more so for the sole. I have a pair of wedges and I just don't see how well they'll do on ice and snow. Nothing is gonna be great, but I hope the Blundstone sole stands up to those conditions a little better.
Bluestone’s make a water proof thermal insulated version looks almost identical to
can you do a list of your favorite heritage style hiking/hunting boots?
Good comparison but I have both blunnies and wedge sole 877s and the fact is that the apparently thin outer sole on the blunnies will outlast the solid wedge by at least 2 to 1. The red wings look cooler and have that heritage style but for all round practicality it's hard to beat blunnies. So long as you can put up with being a street beat clone
Completely agree. I like Red Wing’s Traction Tred outsole but it wears out quickly. The polyurethane variant on blundstone / red backs are a very different material and is much more durable, especially walking on concrete sidewalk / asphalt. No ding against Traction Tred-I think it was designed for farm work (i.e. dirt), not the abrasion of concrete / asphalt.
I’ve looked but haven’t seen - have you reviewed the Danner Tramline Chelsea 917 GTX? I’d love your take, and how you compare with these 2 boots too.
The RM Williams Gardener Commando is a nice boot and comes in Chromexcel
Redback. Price to performance is off the charts, t's what built this channel in a way too and James Hetfield wears them on stage, that's cool as well. Mine have about 3 years of wear now and are still going strong. Sole has plenty of life left, leather is a bit scratched up, but totally solid still, the foam shows no sign of loosing its spring, all stitching is flawless, the elastic still does it's job.
I really wanted to like the Redbacks, but I tried a pair and they felt a bit weird to me compared to the Blunnies. I think that’s just a me problem, the boots themselves looked very well made. I do thing the Blunnies look a little more casual, than work boot, but that’s no big deal.
I would love a video on the solovair Chelsea boots.
Based on my experience over a 24-year period, a wedge sole can be safer if you climb ladders. Why? Sometimes, the heel on a boot can get "hung up" on a ladder rung, resulting in a fall or injury.
Thrice! Music taste as good as your boot taste! Redwing fit way better on me. I am fine with a little less full leather inside for this one.
Great video and breakdown as always, but I don't wear heels. Would love to see videos comparing foot-shaped boots with zero drop. Thanks, and keep up the fun analysis!
great video, off the subject a bit. I bought a pair of Danner Caliper 6" Boots about a year ago. I have not worn them yet so they have been in the box the whole time. Does this hurt the boot or damage the leather in any way?
The Red Wing chelseas are plenty comfortable from day one. If comfort is your concern I don’t think the difference is big enough to worry about. If you have the cash, go with the Red Wings.
At 11:17 what is the name of the product you used for treating the leather? Thanks.
I'm curious how you'd rate redbacks vs redwings
I've got a pair of the 550's but tbh i wish the toe box was wider/more anatomically shaped. I can feel my toes getting squashed.
Can you also check out the adtec Chelsea boot for a more budget friendly pair. I’ve been eying them for a little bit I wanna see you cut a pair.
Please do an RM Williams vs Red Wing comparison
Could you please make a mountaineering series? Can’t find anything that seriously compares Danners (Mountain Light/light 2/Pass) to Diemme Roccia to discontinued Reichle Montagnas or to any other competitor in that style of boot out there. Thanks!
A thrice fan, nice!!!
Heh, I got an email a few days ago from Beckett Simonon that my Silva's are being shipped and now I see this....
Looks like both of these are fine; easy doff/don, throw 'em around, do whatever...to me the Blundstones had a sleeker look because the Red Wings have a slightly bulbous toe.
Blundstones are fine beaters, but if you want a boot that ages beautifully, there’s no choice between the two-it’s the red wing boots. I said in a reply below, but will repeat for here. I have 500’s and these RW chelea’s in Ebony Harness leather (also have the Chelsea Rancher in Briar Oil Slick leather and that’s aging even better).
I have some Blunnies that are 25 years years old and they appear to have a solid sole. Not something foamy with a tough layer underneath, but a tough layer as thee entire sole. I also had a pair that match this video - foam plus tough outer layer. Well, after 7 years...the soles completely fell apart. Am I accurate that these soles are completely different? My 25 YO may never die - though the elastics are pretty dead.
So, are all Red Wing Heritage Chelsea's built this way now? Or can they still be had without the fiberboard?
I need a review on the tecovas and the grant stone Chelsea’s😩
Is the black leather on the Red Wing the same quality?
That huntin' boot series gonna be spectacular!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
I’m looking to get a pair of Chelsea boots. The problem is I wear orthotics because I’m flat footed.
Would I still need them in a quality pair of boots? I’m leaning towards Red Wing. I would like a pair of Nicks but I don’t want to spend that much if it’s going to cause pain.
(regarding the moulded sole of the Blundstones) I bought a pair of Redbacks on your recommendation. They were very poorly finished where the rubber sole was trimmed from leather upper, they'd cut into the leather so deeply they were almost split. I don't know if anyone has had this same problem with Blundstone boots, but I was very disappointed. Sold them on eBay for half the purchase price.
I picked up a pair of redbacks almost a year ago and didn’t have any quality issues with them.
For years i have gotten a work voucher for RW. Havent tried my USA moc toe yet or the year before traditional work boot. Maybe a Nailseat pullon or iron ranger that will probably sit also. Usually wear muck boots at work love Franks and Jim Greens. Whats RW best boot period? I dont have a slip on yet, notnsure how their logger would stack up to Franks lmao.
Vs. Redback? I will take those over both these
Wonder how the Jim Green version compares to these two
Is the elastic replaceable on either model?
Yes!
Bring in the Danner Chelsea!
I have both of these exact boots and the red wings are more comfortable and have better arch support, for me. Note I have high arches. I could not find a pair of redbacks or tecovas or thrusdays that fit me.
I have almost the same boots. 500’s and Classic Chelsea on Ebony Harness leather. Nothing wrong with the 500’s , but the Ebony Harness is aging very nicely! I ended up changing out the insole on 500s not for arch support but because it was a little too roomy and my foot moved too much so I replaced it with a thicker insole.
Review on redwing roughneck?
Before even watching the video, I will assume the Blundstones aren't going to get much love against a red wing, but I personally have nothing but great things to say about them. I wore a pair just about everyday (less wear in the summers). I live in Eastern Canada, so the weather is often gross (Especially in the winter). After 6 Years the upper on one boot started to separate from the midsole. I contacted Blundstone, and they sent me a brand new pair, with hardly any questions asked. I just needed to send photos of the boots/damage, and tell them how I cared for them. They didn't even ask for proof of purchase to verify the date.
I'm not saying they are the type of boots that can last for a lifetime, though multiple resoles, but they are a solid product that you will get great value out of. Plus the company stands behind them with their warranty.
I've heard so many stories of Blundstones legendary customer service & anybody who owns a pair almost exclusively says nice things about them. I've had mine for three years, also in Eastern Canada. Barely any signs of wear, I don't see how I wouldn't get at least another 2 yrs if not more out of them.
Plenty of cobblers are willing to sand down the Blundstone outsoles, then glue on a new sole. Actually, a cobbler could sand down any cheap shoe, and glue on new soles.
What about those vibea Chelsea Boots?
Are the elastic portions of the ankle durable? I could see how that would wear out much faster than the rest of the boot.
That’s a great question. I’ve seen videos / pics of elastic side gore stretch and distorted with heavy use. Would be a very good boot question to see which side gore panels are more durable with repeated cycles of use. Probably very difficultly to test without specific test equipment that cycles the elastic a zillion time though.
Does Red Wing still make the Weekender Chelsea?
Blundstones are nuke proof. I used to prefer the red wings for over any until I tried the Australians. I've used mines for 3 years, can say pretty much water proof (Vancouver guy), and use them for construction work. They are now half way worn and I'll get same brand next time I need a new pair
Has red wing ever reached out to you or have you tried to reach out to them to discuss any of your concerns with the “new style” of the boot construction
Hi mate. There are meany great Australian chelsea boot brands comparible to Blundstones and Redback. Rossi boots are great with some models made in Australia just down the road from RM williams. They offer $40 delivery to the USA and with how shit the aussie dollar is now, you can pick up a real bargan. They have thicker leather than blundstone and even offer a stichdown boot with a comando type sole.
I’ve been waiting for a Rossi review. Thanks for flagging this.
THRICE! I just saw them last month.
In Europe the Blundstones are about 3x cheaper than Red Wing classic Chelsea (160 eur vs 350 eur)
Blundstone soles last so much longer. By the time the blundstones die you will have had to replace the soles on the redwings 4 times..
I’ve heard they don’t hold up if you don’t wear them every day?
U pointed to the red wings when you said blind stones were more reliable for leather quality
Is there a better boot than the Blundstones that looks as good? They seem to be the only boots right in that casual but not slumpy niche, not workwear or a dressy boot.
I'd recommend Pataugas Vitus and Kleman Tonnant.
When I checked this morning, the Blundstone 550's are $199.95 direct from Blundstone . That's a $100 difference compared to the Red WIngs. Not insignificant.
12:00 mixed up here?
How do the wolverine i90 chelsea or the wolverine trade wedge chelsea compare to these???
Man I swear if you have a wide foot no wolverines will ever fit right. Had to get a Geroga boot for my tennis racket feet.
Yup I agree, but I was referring to the built quality. How do the wolverines stack up to these two other brands
I think the Red Wings are undoubtedly a better made shoe but that Red Wing sole wears out VERY quickly on concrete. I think the Blundstones look much better. Give me a Red Wing Moc toe over either of them
This would have been a far better comparison. Similarly priced and made in Vietnam. Style 1220
TRACTION TRED LITE
MEN'S SOFT TOE CHELSEA
That’s a really good point. I just looked up 1220’s and they have a durable wear layer for durability too.
Which is a better blundstone 585 or 550? Thank you
585 is part of the 550 series. They just have different color schemes, but they are the exact same boots.
@@jaemane1 thank you sir for your response.
For those looking for the Blundstone resole video that isnt linked in the description: ua-cam.com/video/DDE3uxpkOAA/v-deo.html
Be sure to budget an extra $100 or so to get the Blundstones resoled when the sole disintegrates from hydrolosis.
Not as much of a problem if you live in a dry area
Yeah, but here you really only wear them in the winter. They sit in a closet for spring, summer, fall. Then the next winter you pull them out and the soles have turned to chewing gum.
Just out of curiosity. If Redbacks are much better overall than the Blundstones, why don't you compare the RedWings with them?
Are Blundstones made in Australia again, now? I stopped buying them and bought Redback instead, which are *excellent*, Oz made and great value, and Solovair dealer. The Blundstone soles would absorb moisture and act like a rubber stamp on shiny floors. I can see no reason to pay Redwing price for Blundstone quality.
should do a work (steel toe) chelsea boot. sorry but the Nicks has the chelsea boot I want but doesn't have a wedge sole which is what the majority of people that want this style of boot would want. working on flat concrete in a oily environment but need a safety toe. why they don't offer this baffles me. I'd pay for the nickys but not for a chunky healed chelsea which makes no since to me for a slip on boot.
Get the Blundstone. At least they're honest about what they are. Redwing is trying to pass off a cheaper boot for a heritage boot.
For Europeans, the Redwings are even more expensive. I just checked and the chelsea boots are €350-€380 depending on the retailer. As for the Blundstones, i just bought a pair of all black 510s for just €156,-. At least if you live in the Netherlands, comparing Blundstones to Redwings just doesn’t make sense to me. The difference in price is just to big.
550's and 585's are more expensive than the 510's
In Oz 585's $249
500's $180
Now boot battle redbacks vs these two
Take 3: Bruh, I’ll consider dragging my little mouse down when you consider cutting up a Drews logger. I want the truth damn it!!!
Redback
Redback vs blundstones
Redbacks FTW
Ariat vs wolverine
Red Wing 🪽 ❤😊
I’m sure the Red Wings are more durable and workish. But the Blundstone Chelsea could be dressed up, while the Red Wings Chelsea looks super casual. I think the Blundstone makes the most sense for this style.
I think you’re saying that because black vs rubber sole? Could not disagree more based on style. The bluestones look like cheap non slip shoes in all black like this
@@zdresser yes, the dark sole seems easier to dress up. To each their own.
@@zdresserI agree with you, both are very casual, but I could at least wear the redwings in a business casual setting (albeit on the casual end of that)
I wouldn't wear anything dressier than a pair of jeans with the blundstones
apart from the budget, the red wing also looks way way better, don't really like the black sole on the blundstone and prefer the more temporary white sole on the red wing, also the leather looks much more like a dressed shoe, blundstone looks like work boots
I really think comparing these boots is unfair, kind if like comparing a camery to a f-150.
I’m gonna start a boot company and cal it blue wing
😂
I started watching you 3 years ago for your honest reviews and lately It seems like to me you are slowly drifting away from that. I understand why the Bluntstone has a fiber board insole because it is a 220$ throw away boot, but there is no excuse for the 300$ Red Wing! Don’t give them a free pass for cutting costs! Don’t start letting your honesty slip for more money on sponsorships because honesty is your brand and without maintaining the unbiased honest reviews you will lose your loyal viewers over time and eventually due to lack of viewers you will lose sponsorships in the end anyway. You used to hold nothing back and expose these deceptive companies while highlighting the good ones doing it right. Lately it seems like every video is,”here we have a good boot and here is another good boot that is different from that one.” Tell it how it really is like you did before. Thank you for all the videos and effort over the years to inform your viewers and please continue:)
I don't really think you can compare these boots. I own the Red Wing Chelsea's. While they are certainly more comfortable than other heritage red wings, they are not nearly as comfortable as modern footwear. I think they are great looking high quality boots, but if I had to give any of the boots serious wear, I would choose the blundstones any day of the week. The red wings do not come close to the comfort of modern footwear.
Either the US market is getting Blundstone's older crap or poorer quality made boots, because ive never had a pair dry out or fall apart.
Why didn't you compared with RedBacks if they are so much better (according to you) than Blundstones? I tried them both and RedBacks are infinitely superior but people only talk about Blundstone.
