  • In this video, I'm making a DIY WOODEN FLY BOX to hold fly fishing flies (lures). I used some zebra wood for the outside of the diy wooden fly box, and some maple for the bottom and splines. The top of the diy wooden fly box is made from clear acrylic that is laser engraved with the No Dumb Questions Podcast logo, since this was a gift for one of the hosts, Matt.

    That came out awesome Bruce! Finding the right foam is SO important. PE, XLPE, EVA, EPS.... There's a lot of ways to go, but most of the time one type will emerge as the right one for the job.

    Great job. I suggest using thick craft foam from Micheals in the future. It is less dense and easier to slip flies in.

    Great build, it turned out really nice! One suggestion when cutting the lid off is to insert shims the thickness of your blade kerf and use tape to keep the lid from moving or flexing. I like to use the brown binding tape from StewMac because it doesn't lift the grain when you take it off.

    Beautiful build Bruce.
    On the foam you may have wanted to go even finer on your slots for the flies. There is a product out there called "Nubby Tac" that is used in some of the commercially available fly boxes. Another option is "Ripple Foam". That being said the DIY aspect of cutting your own means so much more.

    Bruce, I love the zebra wood. It's so different from any other type of wood. I watch you, Drew and Mark making stuff from walnut, maple and such and I get so jealous. Here in the UK we don't have much hardwood to choose from and so what we do have is really expensive. You guys are so blessed. Keep up the food work. Merry Christmas 🎄

    Is it a co2 laser you engraved with ?
    I have a xTool
    s1 40W. Any ideas how I could engrave clear acrylic with diode laser ?

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes, mine is a CO2 laser. I don't really know for a diode. I know some people engrave with those on clear glass by painting on some tempra paint (black), and then wiping off the paint after. You might try that and see if it works.

    Nice project Bruce
    Your intro is nice, you’re speaking to the camera and the presence is good
    Have you ever experimented with giving a few shots of the finished product during the intro? I’d keep everything the same, maybe try it on some footage and see if you think it works.
    For example when you speak of the podcast a few pics could also work - basically I’m talking about b-roll
    Thanks for sharing

    Awesome idea with the foam from HF and the logo looked real nice on the acrylic. Could you also have used tape on the acrylic or something else tape like? I know that you are not supposed to engrave on shinny things and that is what the tape is for, Right? No lathe but I was thinking about the small LASER like YCMT has, small but cute.

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich  4 роки тому

      Thanks! I'm glad that foam turned out well. Yeah, you can use tape to mask for laser engraving. If you notice when I get the piece out of the laser, I peel some masking off. This is just pre-masked material. It has tape on both sides.

    I don't understand the slits in foam if you use strips then you take every second one out. the other way is you put solid piece in so the hooks stick in it is how i do it.

    Only things I would have done would differently is cut the lines in the foam going the other way and cut the foam a little shallower. Sometimes flies are taller than you think and could use a little more height to not flatten them out.
