"I found some really interesting unique pieces of wood" is a great way of saying "I found a perfect use for the garbage wood the lumber yard couldn't sell." Beautiful work as always, Chris!
Exactly. Gotta find the beauty in everything. Which is what i remind myself about you all the time 😂 much love brother. Oh by the way woodprix made your outfeed table better ZIIIIIINNNGGGGG!!!!
YouCanMakeThisToo I am a 17 year old and just starting to get into wood working. How can I find peicies of wood like the ones that he used in the video. Do I ask for them at a lumber yard?
Find a local saw mill. Often a guy with a Woodmizer or other one man operation. We have tons of cut offs from the saw mill that are live edge, figured, wood, and wood with with character that are cut offs and gets thrown away. You can often get this stuff for free. Keep in mind you will have to dry this wood but with a little research you will can easily do this at home.
Thanks so much Paul. I thought it was really cool how the epoxy “worked” similar to wood where I could actually push a gouge through it. I wonder if it would good on a larger piece like a coffee table
The walnut half and half with scalloped epoxy definitely the best. Although the one with the scalloped epoxy running down the centre probably most resembles the river that you're fishing on. Don't know if that's what you were going for, but it worked nevertheless!
@@ThirdCoastCraftsman I know this is 2 years later. But I love tying flies and fly fishing and I'm a fellow michigander. Would you mind telling me what you call the fly you tied?
I really like them all! I think some color (blue, turquoise, aqua, etc) to the epoxy is the only thing I'd change, and that's just a preference thing... They are all very nice!!
Beautiful work, very creative as always. I like that you don’t settle and try different ideas or improvements as in using texture. Check out Iwasaki files from most any site ie, Highland, Woodcraft, Lee Valley etc. Try some you’ll keep them close at hand,,,,instead of reaching for sandpaper or plane, the extra fine are just as aggressive as the fine or medium and leave a glass finish, hardly reach for a medium. Tell Utz to quit talking so much.!
Thanks so much. Actually you you look close I am using a Iwasaki file when I’m working on smoothing out my feet saw cuts for the box body. I totally agree with you. Those are SWEET!!!
I cannot fathom how someone could “dislike” this video, or any video put out by Third Coast Craftsman. This is 1st Class craftsmanship through and through. Always psyched to see a new video from this channel. “Well done” is an understatement. Thank you for your work brotha 🤙🏽
Great video... The hand of God truly touched you. You are a a fine artisan blessed by his Creator This is apparent in the quality of work presented on your channel. IJN
Amazing job Chris. You are so talented son...not only woodworking but fly making and fishing!! What’s next!!! Did you learn to make flies from your granddad? I do like the one you did the extra embellishments on. The copper tubing is a great touch too. Overall a great build for all of the boxes and the video was well edited too. Be safe son.
Whoa! I don't know which one is my favorite. It might be the walnut one with the epoxy running down the center and with the ripple effect you gave the epoxy. I really like all of them though! I think the sliding ones would be my preference, rather than the hinged ones. Great video, Chris!
How I got here I don't know ! Really nice boxes , what a great idea. I like the textured effect on some of them..how does that appear ? I'm guessing it doesn't settle like that. How well did they hold up I'm guessing the weak spot if there is one is the epoxy to wood joint ? Great work really enjoyed that. Glad I stumbled upon that. All the best tight lines.
Love the fly box and the flies. They are incredible. The Blue Ribbon stream looks great too. Similar to ours here near St Louis. I was looking for plans for the fly boxes. I have been thinking about building some epoxy fly boxes, tackle boxes, and rod and reel boxes. Looking for plans for all three. I didn't see any for sale on your website. Can you give me any leads on where to find some? Thanks for the great video.
These are all so beautiful!!! I loved the ones with textured "water" I also loved the all wood irregularly shaped one. I love your creative and craftsmanship. I also the editing and style of your videos. I'm so glad I found your channel!
I love this idea! I have some interesting live edge walnut and have been experimenting lately with casting resins. Great work my friend! Thanks for the inspiration!
Such a cool project and outcome. I love Utz! Is he a German Wirehaired Pointer? Also, thanks for showing the fly tying. I have such fond memories of my dad doing this and the smell of all the feathers.
Love your work! Any chance you plan to make more of these?! I'd love to purchase one as a groom gift for my cousin who is getting married this Oct. This would be perfect.
This makes me want to make something like that so bad, too bad I barely have enough ecopoxy. My favorite would have to be the sculpted piece, but honestly they are all great, good job man!!
G'day Chris, I don't do fly fishing but I absolutely covet those boxes. If I had to choose, I couldn't. I love the tooled texture but the natural finishes are also superb. Why don't you try a little colour in the epoxy as well, chosen to complement the finished wood. Keep up the excellent work. Good 'ealth, John Warner, NSW, Australia
Amazing video and these projects are very unique. Definitely something I would buy if I couldn't make them myself lol. Quick question...How do you get the frosted look on the clear epoxy?
What I have to said to you? Genius? Masterpiece? What else? Great, great job, man! Have you try to use Madrona wood? Or Cocobolo? Or Zebrano, too? I've not tell it in english...
Ave just stumbled across your channel and my god those fly boxes u use them for are beautiful. Could be used as wee trinket boxes or sommit. Deffo be stealing that idea for trying🏴👍
These boxes are so cool! The live edge with textured epoxy adds so much, and now I have a million ideas for something similar, yet different. :) Loved watching you tie the fly- it's been forever since I watched someone do that, great memories
Counting from the right, my FIL bought me #4...the swivel with the epoxy river in the middle. Just got it for Christmas! What an amazing piece of craftsmanship! Plan on taking it to the driftless area this spring!
These are all awesome, such great work. It's been years since I fly fished, didn't recognize the river you were on, but I always had good luck on the Ausable. Love seeing great woodworking from a fellow Michigander!!!
I have probably watched these box builds several times they are so good. I have a question about Mahoney’s Walnut Oil. I am interested in using it in addition with the wax they offer as a finish for furniture. Is the Walnut Oil similar to tung oil? Looking to keep it simple, natural, and easily repairable if needed. Not necessarily looking for durability of a poly or varnish.
The spalted maple looks awesome ( I think it's spalted maple 🤷♂️) they all look great though I didn't think I would like the textured but it looks cool
Very nice video. I like how you’ve incorporated the work on multiple projects in one video. I’m not a fan of the carved look, but the craftsmanship is outstanding. Well done, very informative and entertaining.
I enjoyed the video. It was so nice to see someone using a rasp the right way. Did you learn how to tie flies on Red Green Show, on WKAR at 11pm Saturdays? I watched but i never had the patience. I'd rsther hunt or bow fish myself. These videos remind me of home, quite literally. I moved from Lansing 5 years ago and miss it and Michigan a lot. All of your boxes are excellent and the quality of video is top notch.
The carved Epoxy was a great idea... Polishing Epoxy back to fully transparent after sanding is a total b*tch, so the carving seems to be a cool way to embrace the semi opaque look.
Hmmm, I can't pick a favorite box. I like all of them. Nice work. However the textured epoxy was very cool. It approximated the texture of ripples on a stream. Great video!
Wow! These look amazing. My friends own two destination fly fishing outfitters in N GA and I’m sure they would love buy some of these from you. They do high end retreats at $700 a day per person. They would pay you well.
Beautiful work! I like them all. Loved the copper rivet idea, the scalloped carving, the magnets, and the choice of wood. I’m wondering if you’ve had any experience with Rubio Monocoat hardwax oil finish. We use it to finish hardwood floors, and I’ve seen several fine furniture builders use it as well. The wax in the product would help these boxes hold up to moisture well. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Beautiful fly boxes. Nice rainbow too. What weight fly line are you throwing? It’s been awhile since I’ve been to the river to toss some flies around. Thanks for the video.
the textured epoxy is SICK! Love all of them, but it is my favorite. Awesome job on all of these. I think I may have to try it also, you made me catch the BUG.
Chris, I love these textured lids! The boxes have me wondering, can you do a video for boxes for EDC knives? Just about every guy owns a knife or two, but I’ve had a hard time finding good examples of low profile boxes that can go in a drawer or on top of a dresser that aren’t super bulky.
I woke up this morning with an idea for river boxes and then I found your channel... Again lol. I love the gouged detailed ones. Such fantastic attention to detail, very inspiring thank you. I don't fish but I love trout.
Lovely! You could also make the inside of the flybox with four pieces and glue them together (instead of cutting out a square out of a full rectangle). Saves a bit on wood and you achieve the same result. It's pretty cool if you change up the wood there too, so top side dark wood, side lighter, etc... . Anyway: really cool: the epoxy turned out great!
Wow! I love your work! I am just moving into my first purchased home that has an awesome garage that I cannot wait to try some of your techniques in! My Mom would have loved for me to make her a custome Wooden tackle box for all her fishing gadgets! Eventhough she is not here I'm going to try to make one in her honor. I'll post a picture of the finished project! I cant wait to get my workshop up and going! Your craftsmanship is inspiring!!
Great looking work! I'm making my own leather fly boxes with a hardwood backing, I wanted to know what thickness foam were you using? I found some on Amazon that looks to be what you used but there are varying thicknesses, I wanted to know what worked best for you.
I like the scalloped texture, epoxy only on the half walnut half epoxy boxes. Its like you are fishing from a land mass into the moving water looking at the lid. Great work!
Nice work brother. I like the book style opening better then the swing out cover. I also think the sculptured finish will hold up better to years of wear , more then trying to keep a smooth surface smooth. Both observations are for durability and user ease. Again, nice work.
"I found some really interesting unique pieces of wood" is a great way of saying "I found a perfect use for the garbage wood the lumber yard couldn't sell." Beautiful work as always, Chris!

YouCanMakeThisToo I am a 17 year old and just starting to get into wood working. How can I find peicies of wood like the ones that he used in the video. Do I ask for them at a lumber yard?
That's a good way, and there's a fair chance they have a scrap or cut off bin full of stuff like that.
YouCanMakeThisToo Awesome, thank you.
Find a local saw mill. Often a guy with a Woodmizer or other one man operation. We have tons of cut offs from the saw mill that are live edge, figured, wood, and wood with with character that are cut offs and gets thrown away. You can often get this stuff for free. The textured epoxy is absolutely killer! Really makes the river look much more 'alive' and less static.
Thanks so much Paul. I thought it was really cool how the epoxy “worked” similar to wood where I could actually push a gouge through it. I wonder if it would good on a larger piece like a coffee table
maybe add some color too nice work
If it had some blue dye it might even look like water or a river!
So nice! I really like the scalloped epoxy texture. Very cool effect. Might have to try that
Wm. Walker Co. I'm 100% with you on that one...i was going to comment the same thing.
I like them best as well. Make the epoxy look like water with these ripples is a great finish for a flybox
I suppose I’ll allow you to try. After all I did steal your lighting advice for some of those shots with the gouge haha ✊
The walnut half and half with scalloped epoxy definitely the best. Although the one with the scalloped epoxy running down the centre probably most resembles the river that you're fishing on. Don't know if that's what you were going for, but it worked nevertheless!
Nice, you said instead of the board you would use tape, what kind of tape? To avoid sticking
i'm not sure what was more impressive, making the boxes or making the flies.
Haha. Both have definitely taken some practice 😁
Both are definitely an art. i enjoy woodworking and the only fly fishing we do around here is chasing files around w/ flyswatters.
😁😁
I agree, just awesome.
@@ThirdCoastCraftsman I know this is 2 years later. But I love tying flies and fly fishing and I'm a fellow michigander. Would you mind telling me what you call the fly you tied?
These look amazing! Definitely the top with the texture just in the epoxy. It makes it look like a windy day on the water!
You’re right, I wasn’t even thinking that when doing it but I totally see that now
The textured box that was on the resin only I thought was interesting, like running water. Beautiful work, great video!
This combines two of my favorite things- woodworking and fly fishing! Love it, and love the fact you used mostly hand tools- just fits with the theme.
I really like them all! I think some color (blue, turquoise, aqua, etc) to the epoxy is the only thing I'd change, and that's just a preference thing... They are all very nice!!
Thank you sir! And I agree some color would
Look awesome!
My favorites are the highly figured wood with the textured epoxy. Very complimentary. Outstanding work! 👏👏👏
I’m right there with ya!
Really natural & beautiful🙂

I like the brass "hammer rivet" with swinging tops. Also the textured looks cool, like the wind blowing on the river. Very nice!!!
Great work. They all look amazing but I love the textured epoxy. Looks like water that's moving down the banks.
I'm totally inspired. These are incredible, as was your palette wood fly box. Hoping to try my hand at these but for ice jigs. Amazing!
Well done young man! Bravo! Wood Working, Fly Tieing, Fishing, not sure life gets better than that...

Great video. That is beautiful work! Just curious what type of fly tying vise and bobbin do you use? The vise looks like an HMH.
Just found this channel. Subscribed. The one with the textured epoxy river. Very cool boxes dude, can't wait to see what else you make/ have made.
the textured epoxy is SICK! Love all of them, but it is my favorite. Awesome job on all of these. I think I may have to try it also, you made me catch the BUG.

Man! Literally impossible to pick a favorite! They are all amazing! Nice work! I do like the textured though!
Thanks bud!
Beautiful work. Love the scalloped effect on the epoxy and the timber left smooth. Too good to take to the field.
Tyvek tape is non-stick and good to line your molds. If you line the molds with Tyvek, the molds can be made from any wood/plywood.
Very impressive. Thank you for sharing. I like the ones with the texture epoxy. Looks like water.
Dam now I have to make a box like this. They are absolutely beautiful! Ive just started getting into fly fishing
Pretty bad ass, I dont fly fish but I'm sure I could find some use for a box like these. All of them really look amazing! Great job!!!
Woooah! Those HOOKS are BEAUTIFUL. And I'm NO fisherman
Unreal craftsmanship. You’ve inspired me to try my hand at making a few!
Always wanted to make something with wood and epoxy. Just one project... As a college student, however, I never find the time or resources :(
Great looking work! I'm making my own leather fly boxes with a hardwood backing, I wanted to know what thickness foam were you using? I found some on Amazon that looks to be what you used but there are varying thicknesses, I wanted to know what worked best for you.
C'mon Bro! Choose the one I like best? You're joking, aren't you? All of them are exquisite.
Beautiful fly boxes, the textured river was my favorite one, you do great work, thanks for sharing!
Bravo sir.. excellent all the way around. I like the fact you actually used what you made. Art and function. Perfect.
I like the scalloped texture, epoxy only on the half walnut half epoxy boxes. Its like you are fishing from a land mass into the moving water looking at the lid. Great work!
Love them all, but big fan of the gouged look, and personally like the pivoting opener - great work, lovely project!
Really dig the copper pin as a swing-open hinge and appreciate the effort to add the sculpted texture to the top. Very well done!
Harbor freight floor mats (the 4 pack interlocking kind) make great hook inserts. I use them on my steelhead jig boxes
Very nice!! I love them all but especially the curly and ambrosia looking boxes.
I cant believe I haven't seen this video before. You amaze me with nearly every project you build
Nice work brother.
I like the book style opening better then the swing out cover.
I also think the sculptured finish will hold up better to years of wear , more then trying to keep a smooth surface smooth.
Both observations are for durability and user ease.
Again, nice work.
Awesome work bud! Love seeing all the different boxes. My favorite is the river style with texture, but they are all killer… keep up the great work!
How you really know he's a Michigan native is the liberal use of the phrase "a buddy of mine"
Love the cutouts for decoration.
Have you done any boxes with tinted epoxy?
Nice work on the fly tieing
