- "Lateralus" by Tool is a multifaceted and introspective musical composition that weaves intricate lyrics, complex time signatures, and profound themes. Released as the title track on the band's third studio album in 2001, "Lateralus" stands as a testament to Tool's artistic prowess and their ability to convey deep, philosophical concepts through their music.
At its core, "Lateralus" explores the journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and the quest for enlightenment. The song's title is derived from the word "lateral," meaning side-to-side or sideways movement, and this lateral movement becomes a metaphor for embracing change and exploring new perspectives.
One of the recurring themes in the song is the concept of spirals. Spirals are symbolic of evolution, growth, and the cyclical nature of life. The lyrics repeatedly urge the listener to "Spiral out, keep going," emphasizing the importance of continuous movement and progression. This spiral imagery aligns with the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical concept referenced in the lyrics. The Fibonacci sequence, characterized by each number being the sum of the two preceding ones, reflects patterns found in nature, further emphasizing the interconnectedness of all things.
The incorporation of the Golden Ratio, another mathematical constant, adds another layer of complexity to the song. The Golden Ratio is prevalent in nature, art, and architecture, and its inclusion in the lyrics suggests a connection between mathematics, spirituality, and the universal order. The song prompts the listener to consider the inherent beauty and balance in the world and their place within this intricate tapestry.
Alchemy and transformation are also prevalent themes in "Lateralus." The lyrics speak of "transmuting lead into gold," a metaphor for the inner transformation and spiritual evolution of the individual. This alchemical process symbolizes the journey from a mundane or base state to a higher, enlightened existence. The song encourages listeners to embrace their shadow selves, acknowledging and integrating all aspects of their being in the pursuit of self-realization.
In the realm of consciousness expansion, "Lateralus" challenges the listener to break free from limited perspectives. The lyrics suggest a transcendence of the ego and an invitation to connect with a higher state of awareness. The call to "see my shadow changing" prompts introspection and self-awareness, fostering a deeper understanding of the self and one's place in the universe.
Musically, "Lateralus" complements its lyrical depth with intricate compositions, shifting time signatures, and progressive arrangements. The evolving and dynamic nature of the music mirrors the overarching theme of evolution and change explored in the lyrics.
In conclusion, "Lateralus" is a profound and spiritually-charged musical journey. Through its intricate lyrics, mathematical references, and complex musicality, the song serves as a catalyst for self-reflection, challenging listeners to embrace change, explore new perspectives, and embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and enlightenment. Tool's ability to fuse art, mathematics, and philosophy in "Lateralus" showcases the band's unique approach to music, leaving a lasting impact on those who engage with the song's depth and complexity.

I know a man who quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey after listening to lateralus all the way through for the first time and he couldn’t explain why.
About to smoke a cig and hoping this happens to me rn, I have heard this many times but maybe this is the time🎉🎉🎉🎉
@@dreammkeeper2157as a vaper imma double down on that
I sent this song to my mom. Told her to put earbuds in, close her eyes, & feel the song while listening to the lyrics. She listened to it but said it didn't do anything for her but give her a headache. 😢 I was appalled. I've heard this song more than a million times & still FEEL it. It's not just a song, it's a spiritual journey. But I guess some people can't go through the journey that is this song & come out of it the same way I can sadly.
I'm a mom of a 41,39, and 37 yr old and put my earbuds in at the dentist today. Moms for Maynard is a real thing. ❤❤❤
You are clearly just on a whole other level than your mom.
Or, she simply has a different taste in music than you.
But nah, it's totally the first thing 🥴
This song, save my life, save my soul, save my spirit.
Amen brother
Fuck... now I'm late for work. Nothing like a tool binge at 5am.
HHHHHAAAAAAA! 10-4 Good Buddy, you be clean and green to that Alamo City!

You can all judge me. 46 &2 is still my favorite tool song, even after the new album. It has so much depth and discovering of the person you are, mind, soul, and body.. I am out of breath from rockin out by myself in my room. Good excericse, I found out.
Judging very harshly my friend
lol I’m 47
OMG, all of you, no one cares!! You are nobodies, lol.
the end part of 46+2 when danny does that little drum roll and then he goes freaking absolutely ham and justin and adam come in perfect unison and then maynard comes on top of it all and his voice gives off a kind of an exasperation, glad to have got that taken care of and the hard part over with tone and then everything begins to fade except justin striking a few hard chords that drives it all home like a hammer does nails!
After Decades of Mental Therapy, and Psychiatric medications,
I think, I figured out my Daily, Affirmation:

Lol! I've said that to people when trying to describe Tool.
‘Reaching out to embrace whatever may come’, Lateralus is a call for us all to bring our creative works to the world, think again, push the envelope watch it bend
Empathetic perspective in all ways and all paths and all possibilities.

Faith in Catholic? What's that, a pride in religion?
Devout yourself to following Christ's example, not a church.

So far the most tainted religion out there
@@cleangoblin2021 Really?
And you still call yourself a Catholic?
I'm pretty sure, The Catholic faith is the Chrurch created by Jesus.

Take your argument to Jesus, not me.
Jesus started the Catholic church, He annoited Peter to be the first Pope!
