Im pretty sure they made the music somewhere else then sampled it in as a chiptune, kinda how they put a beatles song in earthbound (this is a complete guess btw because I heard the remastered versions and they just sound like the in game ones before they added chiptune)

@@cyclone6976correct-ish. Mother 3 was originally going to be on the Nintendo 64! But the development was a mess, and the N64 was off the shelves before the game was finished. So it was canned, and remade from the ground-up for the GBA.
Composer Shogo Sakai recycled the compositions he made for the N64 version.
