I own this lens , and I love it. Price, performance, and build quality, really knock it out of the park for people on a budget. I hope Viltrox continues to give us value lenses for the Sony e-mount.
@@TomCalton I am too poor to purchase any of the 85mm lens at this point. However am saving up for 85mm in my lens collection for sure. Another request, now it's only down to Viltrox 85mm f1.8 MKII vs Sigma 85mm DG DN lens. Would love to see a comparison of this 2 lens. My heart is towards Sigma hand down compare to overprice GM lens. We will see how Viltrox MKII perform interns of flare control, low light performance (hunting AF issue?).
The Sigma would smash the Viltrox to pieces in terms of image quality, unfortunately - it's just another level of lens and wouldn't be a very fair test. The Viltrox is brilliant for a super cheap option. But if you want ultimate image quality and you have the budget for it, the Sigma is the way to go for sure!
Great video! im been having a hard time picking a 85mm. looking at the sony 85mm 1.8, samyang 1.4 , Viltrox 85mm 1.8 or waiting and saving going with the new sigma..... so many options
Hey Jonathan - thanks for your comment! Glad you found the video useful 👍 I've just released a video comparing the Viltrox against the Sony 85mm f/1.8 - here's a link if you want to take a look: ua-cam.com/video/_QytFyP4cnM/v-deo.html
I mean, it's a little heavy now you mention it. But I'll be honest, I don't use MF all that much so it wasn't a big deal for me. Thanks for the comment!
For sure. This lens is actually on the fujifilm X-Mount system as well, which is APS-C only (close to 130mm FF eq though, not near an 85mm) if you’re looking for an 85, check out sigmas E 56mm
Recently just bought the lens, i’m a few firmware update behind, do i need to individually install all the firmware update i’ve missed or can i just download and install the latest one?
Hi Tom, greetings from Jakarta. Love your review, you have my subs. Haha May I know if this Viltrox 85mm fo Canon mount will be as good as this Sony mount? Coz I am a Canon FF shooter. Thanks!
Hey! Thanks for the sub and the comment. Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you as I'm not a Canon shooter. I would hope it is just as good, but without testing it myself I couldn't say for certain.
I'm considering to buy this lens used, but I have an option to get the previous version too, for the same price. Is this verson is better? I know only that it's lighter, but its really not a big deal for me, also I know that there was a firmware to make it 1.6 on the first version, and I can guess that you can not do that on this version.
Yeah, you're right - the mkII version is lighter and supposedly the AF is slightly faster, but over never tested them against one another to confirm this. And yes, you're right, the f/1.6 hack is only for the old version and doesn't work for the new one. In terms of optics, supposedly they're exactly the same. I don't know if this helps at all, but if you buy directly from Viltrox, you can get 10% off using the code TOMCALTON (link in the video description)? I guess it really all comes down to price and how much you'd save going for the older model.
I haven't tested them head to head, but I can tell you now, the Sigma is miles sharper. They're totally different animals. The Viltrox is a great budget option, but if you're looking for superior image quality, the Sigma wins hands down. I hope this helps!
Another great review. Thank you! 👍 I'd expect the Viltrox to have more round bokeh balls and maybe even genereally a better bokeh too. Probably the Sony will be a bit sharper, but with some swirly cat's eyes bokeh at the edges of the frame. I'm looking forward to your comparison to see, if I'm right.
Yet there is still a big difference in the price not similar ☺️👍 that's why many people opted to buy viltrox for a cheaper price and and can use other money to buy other accesories such as extra battery, holster, tempered glass. ;) If you have more money no one will stop you to buy sony. it is an option for the people who are tight in budget and the price is not similar but can still perform well as sony
I love finding these smaller channels with such great content. Hope you blow up in 2021!
Thanks! Appreciate the support 🤜🤛
First time watching one of your videos and I am liking it Tom! Keep it up, think you'll grow quite quick with your videos :)

I agree! If they carry on the way they do they're on to a winner for sure 💪
Excellent video. And the portraiture in the video is beautiful.
Wow, din't expect such a good quality considering the price, great video.
Yeah, it's a brilliant lens from Viltrox 👍🏻
Going to pick it up tomorrow, can’t wait!
Were u shooting these pics with high speed sync???? It’s not letting me shoot in high speed sync
Finally! Viltrox! Thanks buddy for the review
No problem! Hope you enjoyed the video 😊

I know it is FE but you think would still be useable with an a6400? I'm a bit concern about not having any stabilization whatsoever

Does the 5 axis stabilization of camera works on this lens?
Yes it does. Your lens choice will never affect the in camera stabilization.
