Roland VS-1680 VS8F-2 effects demo (brief - too many effects to go in depth!)

- This VS-1680 is upgraded with two separate effects boards. With my limited understanding of exactly what they had to offer, I put together this demo. Many of the effects felt geared towards post-production which is of course essential on a unit like this. I would describe my overall impression as conservative and pracitcal ...not as much fun as I wanted. I'll have to rely on my external effects :)
Complicated old machine but it's a classic worth it for recording its like a traning box recorder for learning ,Great machine ,I got Vs1680 😀
So glad I didn't get rid of my VS2400CD after watching this. Great vid!
Thanks so much!
This machine takes a lot of reading to fully understand, so the first thing to do is download the manual by Googling "VS-1680 pdf" (I can't provide a direct link for you in this message). As for the card, there are several versions and you do need at least one to get any effects from the VS-1680. It will still work without a card, you can always use your own effects pedals etc. Have fun!
Very impressive. Got my VS2480 on the way
I love these big old classics :)
Fun demo. Just got my 1680 back running (on a compact flash card), do you remember how much these VS8F-2 cards originally sold for?
I don't, sorry. They were already installed when I got this unit. Nice work getting the 1680 working on a flash card. I'd love to do that on a Roland SP808 sampler. Apparently it's possible but every attempt I've made has failed :/
@@gearfacts A lot of the CF cards I tried wouldn't read, it would freeze the unit on bootup. The last one I had was an old Lexar and it works flawlessly. I have no idea why. I just ordered a VS8F-2 card, looking forward to trying these effects out, the cost of the 1680 was enough for me at the time, adding the card(s) was out of the question (I was 16! I sure flipped a lot of burgers for that unit!!) :).
@@tjn0110 Ah yes, the freezing, always the freezing!!
Maybe they didn't have stereo recording back during this time? ☺️
LOL ! dude this is not the 1950 or 60's ! they had stereo !
@@christopherdunn317 And now everyone will know sarcasm is over your head
Are both vs8f-2 cards the same. Put in one only get so many effects, put in two of the same cards and get more effects.
Are these realtime effects or post edits ?
These are all recorded in real-time
are you playing an electric? or is it an acoustic electric? Thanks! I just pulled my roland vs1680 out & saw your video!
Bobby Craig Jr. I’d say that was one of my old Ashton electrics :) gf
I can no longer possible Seto tried to show that knows a few chords on the guitar? I want to see the function and not stupid
The purpose was to show the quality of the effects, not to show how to operate the machine.
Hey! How do you get to this menu? I’m just trying to put some compression on some tracks and can only add eq, reverb or delay…. Any advice?
so if you use a multieffect, it needs as many fx proc as many fx linked to eachother right? (so im seeing in this vidoe eg. a guitar multieffect with 5 fx linekd, so its needed 5 fx proc so you needed for this 3 fx cards?- because vsf8-2 has 2 fx proc...)
I know this is old but....
Can you apply these effects to different channels post recording from an input?
Example: Have a delay on channel 1 and a flange on channel 2
can you also have multi effects per channel?
or are all these effects just limited to input signals
cheers
Hmmm yep too long ago I'm afraid, I couldn't even begin to remember ...this might take some manual diving! Here's the link: cdn.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/VS-1680_UG.pdf
Is the Effect Board compatible for the Roland vs 2480 CD and for the VS 880? Thanks in advance, greetings from Germany!
And greetings from Australia! My answer: I've never used a VS-880 so I'm not completely sure, but I don't think it can take this effects board. You might have to deep-dive into Roland's website and manual archives to get a certain answer.
Hi thanks for the video. How can you assign multiple effects to different channels from one card? ex: you have vocal guitar and bass. Can you assign three individual effects to the individual 3 tracks? TIA
Hello Izzi, oh man this video was made so long ago... I don't have this unit anymore so I really can't answer the question. Sorry about that! I'm glad you liked the video though, thanks for watching my channel :) Gearfacts
ok so how do I work all this, you mention card? what card ? do I need a card for the effects?
can u please show how to use the loop wiithout the delay
Alrc Hy Sorry man I haven't got this unit anymore.
sucks big time - terrible instuction - practically useless
Yeah I never quite got the hang of it :) #gearfacts
