Interesting sea plane design, never thought having the wings in the water would be a good idea, wonder how it would handle rough sea conditions. Cool looking design.
Those are beautiful planes and the pilots did beautiful jobs. From the looks of it those water landings have to be done perfectly, and they were very masterfully done.
THE FLOATING WING ADVANTAGE The Beriev's very new design has something in common with a very old design. Its floating inboard wing root seems to serve the same purpose as the short, stubby, mid-fuselage sponsons on the old Dornier and Boeing monohulls. These sponsons eliminated the need for wing floats, and assisted the transition to the step. My understanding is that the added surface area of the sponsons would cause them to begin planing at a lower speed than the hull, and they would help lift the airplane onto the step, reducing the amount of horsepower required to make that transition. Once on the step, the sponsons would lift out of the water and no longer produce much drag. The greatest demand for horsepower occurs when getting on the step, and these sponsons allowed the otherwise underpowered flying boats to get on the step despite being heavily loaded for a trans-oceanic voyage. The Beriev's floating wing serves the same purpose. The assist that the wing provides allows this 5000-pound monohull to be comfortably powered by 420 horsepower. Once on the step, the low wing makes maximum use of ground effect to reduce the liftoff speed, minimizing the airplane's exposure to water drag. Conventional seaplanes use flaps to achieve this same result. There is a certain elegance of simplicity in the Beriev's use of a one-piece wing to achieve what is usually done with the complexity of a wing flap system. Through shrewdness of design, the Beriev designers have eliminated an entire system that entails moving parts and maintenance, as well as management on the part of the pilot. ROUGH WATER READY One of the pre-conceived notions I arrived with was that the airplane probably isn't any good in rough water or crosswinds. I had a chance to find out that this is not the case. One of the days I flew had gusty winds and crowds of weekend powerboats that were whipping the surface into a confused sea of random chop that made for some genuinely rough water. I flew it in water that well exceeded the 1/2 meter (19 inch) waves that had been demonstrated in certification, and found it to handle them at least as well as a comparably sized floatplane. In some ways it handled them better, since it slides across the water on its broad platform with no pitching or heaving tendencies. Again, I found no porpoising tendencies, even when slamming into the occasional extra large wave. Also, I was able to verify the extent of its roll stability on the water by falling in on the step behind a large powerboat and riding parallel on top of his wake. Doing this would have been hazardous in a floatplane and precarious in a conventional monohull, but with five feet of wing skimming the water on either side to provide stability, it was a non-event in the Beriev. It continued steady, with no rocking of the wings at all. The airplane's construction seems sturdy enough to withstand the abuse of rough water. When it conies to rough water, one of this airplane's strong points is the German-made MT propellers. Their location above and behind the broad wing practically eliminates spray exposure, and any spray they do encounter is not likely to do much damage since the props are composite with a nickel leading edge. Our rough water session left the props unaffected, where the same session in a Grumman would have required dressing the blades afterward. The props on the airplane have 200 hours and 400 water landings on them, and they have never been dressed and do not need to be. I found that very impressive. -Burke Mees Water Flying Mar/Apr 2005 www.seaplanes.aero/main/index.html

Thanks for posting this video. It appears that some folks, who have never seriously examined seaplane design, have lots to criticize, but the Be-103 is well designed in most respects, though I wish that they had used a planing-tail hull design, which eliminates the step, and thereby reduces drag considerably. The wing is a mid-wing, obviating any need for lateral stablization, reducing drag. This video shows how well the design prevents water hitting the props during takeoff, which is important.

I think the big problem is sea sitiation. Storms and strong winds could destroy. Hard to landing and takeooff to seas and oceans. Only lakes or rivers are allowed to landing. May be other problem is fuel consption. Take off from water needs more power.??

hate to see a wing or wave cause the plane to dip a wig, that to me is a poor design.
The wave induced pitching near liftoff speed, yikes!!! I can't imagine there is any margin for even smallest of waves.
Almost looks like they rely on the skipping effect of the water’s surface tension at high speed to get bounced up enough they can pitch for takeoff.

That's a gorgeous plane. I scratch build rc planes, and this has been on my list for a long time
Sistema aeronáutico muito prático e versátil. Parabéns. Bacharel de Sto.Amaro. zona Sul. SP.SP. Brasil.
THE BEST. THANK YOU.
When those planes are on the water, do they have the landing gear up, or down?
The question is how do you keep the landing gear from rusting? And interesting how low the wings are to the water.
Why is this the first time I've ever seen one of these airplaineamotorboatarolios?
For me this plane is a nice-to-have, after my carrier strike group and flip-lid mountain lair. Amazing video.
Gorgeous aircraft !!
May god let us live in peace....
I guess the weather is important for water take-off and landings, although I love the look of the plane in the air. It looks like nothing I've seen before. I'm Canadian, so unless the plane is a WWII flying boat, I expect to see pontoons on sea planes. :-0! lol!
Being a Canadian says anything one would ever want to know! HA
I love your donuts and coffee. I had to leave Canada before I became to fat to get in my clothes..
Canadair CL-215
Saw one of these at the Seaplane Fly-In in Greenville, ME. Very cool. I think the asking price was $750K.
Marc in NA do you have a video of it? I would like to see it!

@@skyforce2132 I did at one point, but now long lost. But there are a number of videos showing the Be-103 flying on UA-cam
@@peterrohmann7641 My thoughts exactly
Hmmmm...looks like a good way to get sea sick right before you get air sick. I can;t wait to try it!
Love and nice ....where is it....did you have contact detail of it
"пацаны ваще ребята!"
One small crosswind gust on approach puts a wing tip into the drink and it’s cartwheels. I’m not a pilot, just an aviation enthusiast. Just seems like an unnecessarily risky design flaw. Am I correct?
That is the cutest sea plane I've ever seen 😍😍😍
Anyone know what the service life on these airframes is? I can't imagine skipping over the water like that is good for the structural integrity.
I think the big problem is sea sitiation. Storms and strong winds could destroy. Hard to landing and takeooff to seas and oceans. Only lakes or rivers are allowed to landing.
May be other problem is fuel consption. Take off from water needs more power.??

Wonderful airplane.I worked at it

Pontij Pilat , they dont look like rough seas aircraft. Too bad the Aero Warrior never got up to commercial sales level.
They're Russian. I bet they could land on rocks without damage!
Is that fresh water? salt water would be a big problem for the mechs
Mechs have jump jets :p
Black sea
Actually, it is a mid-wing design, which has a distinct advantage of not requiring any side floats, which increase drag, so it has much less drag than most seaplanes. That is why it cruises so much faster than other seaplanes.
It's freakin awesome!
Fantastic!
Salt has no affect on aluminum in Russia?
No, it's made of titanium.
Do they give massive discounts to veterans...:)
I started to love this plane
Interesting combination of seaplane and ekranoplan but flies like a normal plane. It is not a pure surface effect vessel. I'm amazed that the wings actually rest on the water.
That thing looks like a death trap. Using the wings as floats is nuts.
@Albert Dacosta I have no idea what you mean.
Yeah, I'd like to know the safety record on these planes. Any lower in the water you'd have a U-boat.
Cool concept! But looks like you need calm water for smooth takeoff and landing or you'll be in for a bumpy ride!!
Thats any float plane landing on water... not a new concept, just new design
this design eliminates it rocking side to side when taxing on water, and maybe safer when landing in terms of not hitting the strut, but the takeoffs and landings look WILDLY bumpy, so idk...9:06 looked NUTS! yah, I agree with the comments actually, low wing is worse off during landings than a highwing strut hitting
Better hope every landing is on water as smooth as a swimming pool.
Probably more of a lake skipper than a sea plane.
It was Designed to Land on Lake, Likely for Aerial Patroling
@@MoskusMoskiferus1611 Lakes can get nasty too. BTW, this footage was shot at a port on the Black Sea.
The "Peanut Gallery" in the background was really annoying.
I wanted to see that larger jet take off. Was that "Scully" in the cockpit?
