    Funny story from many years ago. Tony S. was in the line up. I can't remember if he was a godan or rokudan at the time. Anyway, East LA. Rough part of the town. Senior black belt walks up to Tony, blasts him in the stomach. Tony, who happens to be about 6 ft, 235 if he's an ounce, blasts the guy back!! Sempei picks himself up, walks back up to Tony, who btw is still in stance, and asks "Why did you hit me?" Tony, 1,000 yard stare, answers "You don't hit me, I don't hit you!"
    Next time in the line up, Sempei is blasting everyoone in the lineup ...until he gets to Tony. He looks at Tony, gives nod and a grunt, Tony gives a grunt back and sempei move on the next guy, whom he hits extra hard...just to make up for not hitting Tony.

      they actually condition their hands to do that and hit one another in that way, unlike alot of other martial arts styles that just do the motions of it and don't even try to condition their hands the way that they supposedly strike. not in okinawan karate. every DAMN thing is a weapon.

      have you tried being hit either at the abdomen or breast area or kneed at the legs while blind folded and you are going to exhale and then the hit will impact? I doubt it. try also blindfold, tip toe, exhale then be hit with a punch on your body or legs.

    • @diosdadoapias
      @diosdadoapias 5 років тому

      It will be the same because what is being use their to endure impact is breathing. Why have you tried being hit in close eyes- tip toe? if one can control their breathing at the bladder area one can, at least, endure a punch or kick at the abdominal area up to their limitation.

What is going to prove? The fist is too weak that cannot hurt the body or the body is strong enough? It's full of contraction!

      There are certainly other valid ways to train, but forms and conditioning shouldn’t be underrated. Forms teach a body the mechanics to generate power for varied strikes and movements of a particular style. The conditioning teaches the body how to absorb attacks, maintain structure and composure. Neither training tool is a replacement for fighting and sparring, but allows one to focus on these very specific aspects of combat. A number of really good MMA fighters like Chuck Liddell and George St. Pierre have their roots in traditional karate like this video. Not the only way to train, certainly, but there is value in it.

    • @scaredycart4232

    • @daysleeper0200

      I don't have an issue with katas. At least the traditional ones. I actually find them to be very useful. My issue is the whole, "Lets do slow motion kata while someone beats on us" approach to learning a martial art. IMO this is the result of several generations of misunderstanding kata and it's use. When you have nothing of real value to teach, you create exercises like what is seen in the video.
      I believe partner training is extremely valuable. To the point that I would ask why they choose to practice like this when there are partners available for training.
      The inclusion of Karate in the lineage of successful MMA fighters is irrelevant here. Karate today is typically trained as 1. self-defense, 2. kata or point sparring contests, or 3. entertainment. While they may share some fundamental movements, none of these three will benefit a high level MMA fighter very much at all as they are not the same thing.
      It's like saying a successful football player was also good at boxing. I seriously doubt that Machida, Liddell, St. Pierre, or any of the number of sport fighters with some time in traditional arts, built their MMA careers on Karate training. It was likely more of a gateway influence than anything else.
      If there is value in this, I don't see it. Training to stand there and take a fake beating while doing nothing seems counter-productive to me.

    • @scaredycart4232
      @scaredycart4232 5 років тому +5

      Guess you're not a practitioner, there is 'Arts' in martial arts. Kata is a beauty form of karate it's about self control, taekwondo, and wushu also has their own Kata.
      There is also Kumite have you ever heard of it.
      Thing is about people who only think the martial arts as self defense, they only think bout 'oh this is useless, can't do it in real life'
      Martial arts is not just fight it's about discipline, respecting other. You don't go punch people when you have an argument because you're a martial artist, and you can show of your skill.
