Summer 2021 Florida Food Forest Tour - Part 1

- It's been 18 months since my last video tour, a lot has changed! There's been a lot of growth and quite a few new plants added. This video features the plant names spelled out since that was a popular feature of the last tour. Tree saw - this Silky Professional F180 has a comfortable grip and cuts through branches with ease. I use this for things too large for the pruners. To date there is no rust on it, I put a loop of paracord through the hole in tha handle to make it easier to hang. Link: amzn.to/35Mb77Z
Pruners - The Felco F-2 Pruners are the choice of gardening experts everywhere. They seem to last forever, if you are a real heavy user you can buy replacement blades and make them like new again. Link: amzn.to/3qjzgMO
Snippers - For more precise work such as cutting delicate leaves off of new starts, these Corona stainless steel snippers work great. They have a long narrow blade to get into the tight spots on your seedlings or to prune smaller plants. Link: amzn.to/2TZmk2B
Trowel - Now this isn't really classified as a trowel but the Corona Scopp is my everyday all prupose tool that I probably use more than anything else (besides the pruners). This is not the best for digging in the soil but I don't really do much of that in my food forest. This is an excellent tool for potting, which I do a lot of. It holds a lot more than a traditional trowel and is a very well built tool. I've left it out in the rain many times and no rust. Link: amzn.to/3zRa5We
Knife - This Morakniv knife has held up well, it stays sharp and while the blade has lost its bright color it has not rusted. I use this for opening bags of soil and cutting ropes and twine. This knife is fairly inexpensive and includes a belt holster if you prefer to carry it that way. Link: amzn.to/3d9IPbD

If you are familiar with our growing zones I am in 9B, it is on the edge of what is considered a tropical climate. It is possible to get a bad freeze but it's been a long time since we have had one.
I can tell you have done a lot of hard work to have all those plants, congratulations. I think a lot of them will need more sun long term to thrive and produce for you....don't be afraid to trim back or remove the trees that are competing for the same light.
There's a lot more light exposure in the back yard as you will see in part 2. I'm trying to find more plants that are OK in the shade but you are right, eventually I'll have to cut some branches back to get more light there. Thanks for watching :)
I disagree, your oaks seem to be helping you push the zone and grow things like soursop. Florida sun is powerful, I get lots to fruit under oaks.

Yes I am planning on it! I've been real busy adding plants and I need to get the identification labels up so I know what they are when I walk around doing the video.
Planning our food forest for our FL acreage. This video is a big help and inspiration! How did you decide what to plant initially out of curiosity?
Mostly by watching videos of other food forests and sampling fruits where I could. I still have a list of around 200 items I'd like to add. See if there is any food foresters in your area, they will probably give you a tour.
Hi I have visited your food forest about two years ago .and bought quite a few plants from you .. They are all doing great . Wondering if you are selling clippings of your Giant mulberry ..I bought a Pakistani and believe it to be diseased ..will be killing it and burning ...

I haven't been able to find Seminole pumpkin in ncentral FL . I did get a 2 ft dwarf mulberry which is over 6 ft already. Not sure if I should top it or not

Where did you get your June Plum and the peppers, thanks?
The Datil Peppers are grown from seed, I get mine from Baker Creek. The June Plum was from a local annual plant sale held by a club here. Are you near Melbourne?

No I am in Pinellas County. I had never heard of the June plum. Do you like the taste?
@@spencerbass7142 Yes, but they can be difficult to work with. The taste is very light, like a cucumber crossed with a pineapple. The difficult part is that the seed has tendrils that are all through the fruit so it takes a bit of work to clean it.
