- Growing Food in Florida through Ecological Farming Practices:
NO IRRIGATION, NO CHEMICALS, NOT EVEN "ORGANIC FERTILIZERS". Grow Your Own Fertilizer & Create the richest, darkest, most nutrient dense soil possible with proper mulching techniques!
In this 4 minute clip from our August farm tour, Pete Kanaris (founder of GreenDreams & Sandhill Farm) discusses the right kind of mulch to be using in the Central Florida region, plus demonstrates his technique of "chop & drop". This idea is designed to provide the essential nutrients/minerals for our heavy feeding fruit trees. Instead of constantly buying organic fertilizer, we are growing our own.
The 2 crops used in the "Chop & Drop" demonstration:
Tithonia diversifolia (Mexican Sunflower, Bolivian Sunflower)
Fakahatchee Grass (a fast growing, Florida native grass)
Love this old video!
I added some rotten oak wood and decomposing leaves best growth I've ever seen in my garden👌
Pete should do a collaboration with Matt Powers
Hi Pete! Do you know if Tithonia Rotundifolia 'The Torch' - the other common plant known as Mexican Sunflower - can be used in the same manner, with appreciable results? Thank you for all the great content you provide!
Hello! Yes I would think so, it's definitely not as vigorous or dense as the diversifolia.
Do you still do these tours?
Hey Diane! No unfortunately we stopped the tours a few years ago. That’s why I started the UA-cam videos.
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL bummer!
