Album is sped up. His vocals are sharp, as is the entire album. It is NOT in E Standard tuning. There was a reason for this, I dont remember, i think the rumor was that, the anvil that they used for, For Whom the Bell Tolls was slightly sharp when they recorded it, the band wanted to keep the sound, the producers went "well, fuck, the only way it will be in key with the song is if we pitch correct it". The only way to do that back then with analogue recordings was to SPEED up the master recording. Ever try to cover any songs from this album in E Standard tuning and find something slightly off? The whole album is a semi tone SHARP
It's not the best metal album of "ALL TIME." Careful how you use the term,"Of ALL time." I'm not going to lie, I am a huge Metallica fan! They are definitely my favorite band of ALL TIME! It's DEFINITELY one of Metallica's BEST albums of all time! But in MY opinion, their best album or should I say Metallica's best albums of all time is Master of Puppets and, In Justice for all. They are a tie for best Metallica albums of all time.
Except it isnt his REAL voice per say. The album was sped up which pitch shifted it a semi tone higher. All of the instruments and vocals are not in E standard
The first song I ever heard and loved by them was For Whom the Bell Tolls. I remember staying up late at night to record it on my boom box stereo off of Metal Shop, the radio show. Took me years to find out who they were.
This was the album that made me a fan. My cousin had a tape with mixed songs and said he was going to play the worst song he’d ever heard to me. It was Fight Fire with Fire. 🔥 I was hooked at once! Still, my favorite album with Metallica is Master of Puppets which is a masterpiece in every aspect. That’s when all the stars aligned and James’s riffs was not from this earth, that’s how perfect they are still to this day. 🤘🏻🇸🇪🤘🏻
It’s funny you mention that on this video, as Lightning and Puppets could be a double concept album! You have the whiplash-inducing opener (see what I did there!?), the title track, the “slow bruiser”, and the ballad on the first side. Side two opens with another neck breaker, a mid-tempo number, and yet another neck-breaker interspersed with an instrumental (in opposite order on said albums).
As much as I love ride the lightning, I like master of puppets more. The reason why? Well one word "taste", I like the overall sound and songwriting more with master of puppets, and again thats just my taste if you like ride the lightning more, I completely understand, it is a killer album!
Imagine being the son of a rich tennis player and being so selfish that you let your band "colleagues" (not friends, he's too narcissistic for that) sleep in an attic while you're probably in a villa in your own Bed. Lars Ulrich is just an asshole.
How could you not know that??? That’s been common knowledge since its release, it was the first time they were produced by Rasmussen and how good it turned out is why they used him again for Puppets.
Another interesting fact about Cliff Burtons intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls. That lick was something he composed before ever joining Metallica. I came across a video some years back, its here on YT. He is playing in a band called Agents of Misfortune and busted out with that lick at one point during the video. I also remember reading once that during this time period there was consideration given to replacing Lars with Dave Lombardo. I dont know how accurate that story was but it was in a book a friend of mine had about the history of Metallica written back in the 90s.
I take this back I’m a little bit surprised. Where is that footage coming from at the 3:55 everybody’s in the studio, Cliff is in the background?! where is the rest of all this video stuff specifically…
Mustaine wrote two riffs from the title track and part of Call of Ktulu. That's it. Mustaine fanboys give him WAY too much credit for his contribution to Metallica. He literally only wrote two songs. Jump in the Fire and Mechanix. Mechanix was obviously reworked and became Four Horsemen because Dave's lyrics were terrible. He also co-wrote Phantom Lord and Metal Militia with James. And they used a couple of his riffs on RTL. That's the end of it. They credited him for all of his contributions and he still gets royalty checks for them to this day.
It would be closer to say Kirk wrote the whole album as Kirk wrote more riffs than Dave for the album but of course the high majority of the music was written by James.
James song on that clip from 1985 fade to black is PERFECT !! that excactly video is the one that captures the REAL soul of Metallica... look at james face when singing and hes smile while lookin at the crowd ... look at Lars banging when the hard heavy parts begin right after James sings : Goodbyeeee... look at burtons banging all the way.. but especially in the solo part.. where he is takin a break and lars snaredrum wakes him up and drag him along again Fade to black from 1985 is, despite the bassdrum killing most of the sound.. the TRUE Metallica !! ...and BTW .. Escape is an amazing song !
The thing about them spelling Ktulu that way isn't true. That was just a fan theory. They spelled it that way because they didn't think people would know how to pronounce it. They regret it now. So... I guess people didn't know ALL of it since that part was incorrect.
You can also tell what other riffs Dave Mustaine wrote for the song CALL OF KTULU when you listen to the song WHEN on MEGADETH’s THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO album.
The only people that didnt like James s voice back then were the snobby this aint my metal Priest fans. But us instant thrashers knew and loved it immediately. And hes never sounded so raw and savage since.
Me: I’m in a Metallica cover band. Her: Cool. What instrument do you play? Me: ⚓️🔨 I know that’s an anchor and not an anvil. But there’s no anvil emoji, and at least an anchor is a heavy hunk of metal.
I love RTL! Some more: Kirk wrote the riff behind the "Die!" part in Creeping Death while he was still in Exodus. Mustaine wrote the intro to Megadeth's Hangar 18 based on the same riff as he wrote in Call of Ktulu. Probably as a FU to Metallica lol John Bush not joining Metallica was a sane decision as his band Armoured Saint was doing well at the time he was asked to join. Fact 4: I heard RTL a few days after release when I was 15 and I was blown away!
I actually knew 80% of that, but I'm an absolute freak about Metallica. Everything I can do on guitar is thanks to them. I even know how to modify Marshall amps because I've spent an unhealthy amount of time tone chasing after the first 2 albums lol.

Also, HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT MY JAMIE BEAN’S VOCALS!! Nah I’m just kidding that’s your opinion. But personally, James’s vocals were the best during the Cliff Era. Well his voice has always been amazing but during that time era, perfection. Also, at 3:54, where did you find the clip from? I’ve never seen that before.
Welp, apparently here's something you didn't know... they actually spelled "ktulu" like that because they were worried people wouldn't know how to pronounce it. The thing about "using its name gives it power" was just a popular fan theory. It's not actually true. They actually ended up regretting changing the spelling.
I found a quote from James Hetfield: James Hetfield: "Part of the deal with Sweet Silence [in 1984] was that they feed the band, so we'd be at Flemming's house every night for dinner. His poor wife; she was constantly cooking for these four greasy americans and complaining very openly to Flemming how much she disliked that: "Get these fucking guys out of here." Of course, she'd speak Danish, and Lars, being the only one in the band who could understand, would look a little freaked out. The rest of us would be smiling, like, "Hey, how's it going?" We'd sleep upstairs in the tape vaults. Or try to sleep, We moved around constantly. "You go over here, I'll go over there". "Fuck you, this is my spot for an hour". You get sick of one guy, but another's snoring, or it's not dark enough. Cliff couldn't sleep unless it was pitch black, and I needed to have a little light. Sometimes we'd just give up and wander through the tape vaults: "Oh my god, look, there's Deep Purple." We'd find these old, master tracks that Flemming would play for us the next day. That part was really cool."
"turning down metallica is like finding a million $ and not picking it up" that statement couldn't be more literal cuz lars gave robert a million $ when rob joined metallica
Not true. For Whom The Bell Tolls was a Hemmingway novel. They didn't change the spelling of that. Lol. They changed the spelling because they were worried fans wouldn't be able to pronounce it. They ended up regretting that decision.
@@rubemortenson1724 I dunno man i think we can't really know what happened, but yeah i think you have a point. There are a lot of songs that are inspired by books and movies in this album and metallica at all.
James was supposed to be the stand in vocalist for the time, but after Cliff passed he accepted the role. Another fact, a keyboard was used in Fade to Black to help James stay in key. Somewhere around 3:10 for the isolated vocal track, you can faintly hear it. Only time this was done to my knowledge.

James never sounded better than this record. His vocals were the best

This is the album that really got me into thrash. Right around 16 years old blew me away
James's voice had improved dramatically compared to a year earlier. Practice makes perfect!
Of course Ride the lightning was recorded in Denmark.
