The Secret Garden of the Deep

- Deep Sea Coral Reefs represent areas of astounding biodiversity. Lush cold water coral and sponge gardens thrive in the icy waters. An expanse of colourful coral structures blooming out of the sea floor, providing important habitats for deep-dwelling life. And yet, they are one of the most poorly understood of all deep sea ecosystems. Much like in shallow reefs, deep-sea corals are made up of colonies of coral polyps, working together to survive. They form when a polyp attaches itself to a rock, and divides into thousands of clones through the process of budding. The polyps then secrete a protective limestone skeleton called a calicle, which creates the coral structure.
What’s unique about the corals of the deep, however, is their resilience to the extremities. As they are not dependent on warm water, they can thrive in waters that are as cold as -1 degrees Celsius, and in all the ocean’s basins, forming havens of life amidst vast canyons, on continental shelves and slopes, and on towering ocean seamounts. Unlike tropical reefs, they live from 150 feet to more than 10,000 feet below sea level, where sunlight is dim to nonexistent. So, instead of obtaining energy or nutrients from sunlight, they live off the dead, and gather all they need by catching organic material called marine snow that drifts past on the currents. But leftovers from the shallows are not enough on their own. Here, the corals also eat microorganisms, such as krill and plankton, ensnaring them with their branching, feathered, fan-shaped structures.

I'm glad to see you putting light on the human destruction. It would be interesting to see your take on plastics in the ocean. Also that DDT dumping site they found. This is so devastating to everything..... I love your channel and work! Xoxoxoxo
Thanks again, that means a lot! I definitely try to slip in bits about human-driven destruction where I can, I find it appalling the extent of what we’ve done to the oceans! As for the issue of plastics, I did a video that touches upon it a little while back if you’re interested: ua-cam.com/video/LKrJ-GO4itk/v-deo.html
@@NaturalWorldFacts oh thank you. Wow, you are so young!! I love your channel and have been watching it a lot since I found it a few days ago. You are one of the good ones out here in this world of crap UA-cam sludge channels. @@NaturalWorldFacts I'm a marine biology student as well, so I can tell the quality is top notch. Keep it up man!
Oh brilliant! Thank you so much. I’m beginning my Marine Bio course later this year if this lockdown mess ends, hopefully at Southampton. I’m incredibly excited. Thanks for the praise and for making my day man!
@@NaturalWorldFacts dude, I study to become a scuba diving instructor and your content is amazing. Keep it up bro
@Georgi That’s incredible!! Wishing you the best of luck
Love deep reefs, saw the exhibit on the shallower end of these at the california academy of sciences a few years ago and all the neat technological advances allowing divers to explore mesophotic coral depths safely. These even deeper reef are super cool, and sad how bottom trawling trashes them
That sounds like a fascinating exhibit! It really is a remarkable feat that so much has been uncovered about these ecosystems in such a short amount of time. They’re a hidden world that many thought couldn’t possibly exist! Reefs in cold waters, far from sunlight. But nature always finds a way to surprise us. And we always find a way to destroy it in return..
Not merely sad, but *CRIMINAL!*
That any nation fails to fully prosecute fishermen - & especially corporations - caught using this unacceptably indescriminate fishing technique, is an indictment of so-called justice systems & their governments corrupt support of corporate greed, over the preservation of irreplacable natural marine ecosystems.

We should get a boat, right, then get some high powered air cannons that can punch large metal slugs through a ship hull.
Then just start sinking them.

I literally thought that this was being narrated by Cate Blanchett. o.o
I actually came to the comments because I was confused why she hadn't been credited for narrating in the description box! lol wow...
A voice that's deep & beautiful, just like these mysterious abyssal oases.

I love these videos, I've been binge watching videos from this channel since I've found it yesterday..... And yeah it gives me chills whenever the reverb kicks in lol.
Thank you so much!! I’m so glad you’re enjoying them
Lovely video! I'm particularly amazed at the crab/coral relationship, that's truly incredible!
That little crab definitely stole the show. It’s remarkable how these interrelationships form between such vastly different animals, and based entirely on instinct.
I never saw it before, & I'm 59!!
God damn! What another amazing video! How you manage to create astoundingly exquisite feasts for the eyes and ears so often amazes me. Incredible work once again.
What a lovely comment, thank you so much @blubberingCephalopod 🐙! I’m really glad you enjoyed this one, I was very excited to share a video about an ecosystem that many people don’t know exists, yet one that is also truly beautiful. A world of colour in the dark expanse! A glimmer of hope :)
It's truly wonderful editing through dozens of hours of MBARI, NOAA and a lot of other ocean research, fisheries and conservation footage... these agencies are happy for others to use their deep sea "content" with only a reference mention. They are magical to watch all together, especially with the narration of the marine biologists and scientists as they come across the species, some for the first time. 😀.. their excitement and science nerd humour is irresistible.
Check out references in description box.💙💙

@Navigator Mother I couldn’t agree more! The footage they capture is simply astonishing, and sifting through it while I make these presents so many new findings, undiscovered creatures and makes me so excited. They’re pioneering a new frontier in exploration, and one day I want nothing more than to join them in the field. For now, while that’s impossible, getting to learn from them and share their findings with my audience is such an incredible experience. (And absolutely, nothing beats that unbridled excitement in their voices that you hear on the raw footage videos - my kind of people! Nerdy, passionate, and excited) 🐠🐟🐡🐬

It is a reference to a book? I thought that the title is a nod to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

It's how Chinese fishing fleets work. It's not just that they're violating the rights of sovereign nations by invading their local fishing regions, it's not just that they're stealing from local fishing folk, its that they're DESTROYING the fishing grounds.

lindos doc". anossa bio_ divercidade e infinita cabe ao homem preservá-la e nao destruí-la🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃...!
Such color from a place with no light. I was thinking that in that cold, dark absence of photosynthesis, and poor food supply these coral are centuries, if not millenia old. To be destroyed for fish, which no small amount will be thrown away is beyond my skill for words. The deep sea Orange Roughy was nearly eliminated because it reproduced so slowly. Maybe unfairly, when I saw things destroyed without regard for others I thought China.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to see what I would never be able to see otherwise.
It’s really upsetting to see these incredible ecosystems ravaged like that. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave this comment :)
Couldn't agree more about the horrid fishing practices that are destroying and decimating the oceans!!
Simply amazing, it's a shame we know more about the moon than we do about our own world

Looking up close, one would never that it was not the a reef near the surface of the ocean. These are wonderlands, forever isolated from our world.
What can we do to end the trawling? What can we do to preserve what's left? We must never go there. Instead, we must leave them in peace, and then, perhaps one day, they will bring life back to the reefs of the surface. 🙏♻️☮️🦈

i wonder how often crabbers drop those huge heavy 2 ton pots to the bottom and squish these reefs, then they go to pull it up and drag it across 10 feet of reef, tearing it to smithereens, in order to deplete the ocean of crab and lobster. #govegetarian
