Is Wireless Shifting Worth the Upgrade? | SRAM Eagle AXS Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2024
- Electronic shifting for mountain bikes was first seen back in 2015 with the Shimano Di2 systems, but recently SRAM one upped the game with their AXS drivetrains which are not only electronic, but also wireless making it the first of it's kind. For your mountain bike, there's Eagle AXS available in XX1, X01 and GX.
So the question for today is: Is Wireless Shifting Worth the Upgrade?
Perhaps the easiest way to go wireless is with the Eagle AXS Upgrade Kit which is half the price of a full groupset and allows you to mix'n'match with any other SRAM Eagle component. For example, if you have a GX, NX, X01, XX1 cranks, chain, cassette and chainring, the upgrade kit includes the derailleur, shifter and accessories to remove your shift cables!

What if my enemy’s hack it and I mis shift and fall off a cliff ...
That would be disappointing
Enemies being evil spirits that operate through technology?... Then yes. People enemies...not so much
VERY LIKELY!!!
Russians!!
its posible using RF jammer But lets keep it secret
I just got done filling someone's cavity, and I gotta have this.
Good review, this looks sweet.
You’ll need to wait for a crown! Then place your order!
love the sarcasm
FDO.... for dentists only
For a second I thought you were a drug smuggler preparing human mules for transit
I was straight up shouting "No" everytime you were smashing the derailleur to demo the disengage. 🤣🤣
Hahahaha when we were editing the video we were just laughing the whole time at that part 🤣🤣🤣
A 25g battery is to heavy and will likely affect my KOM on Strava
make sure it’s at half battery, then it will weigh half as much
I had mine for a couple weeks now, I think it made me faster because the shifting is so fast, plus you can program the shifter to triple shift if you hold down the button
I'm lucky enough to have this on my bike. His review is spot on.
agree. I've been running it on my S-Works Epic since march and it is flawless. I loved it so much I ended up doing xx1 mullet group on my gravel bike.
dam wish i made 100k a year
@@jerbinsternberg5824 $100k a year, haha. Need more than that to convince myself to drop an extra $1k on my drivetrain.
Me too!

Probably one of the best reviews I have ever seen, thanks The Last CO.
Mike Hall used electronic Di2 when he broke the self supported 2,745 mile Tour Divide course record in 2016. I'm sure AXS will work for plenty of bikepackers. I'm excited about electronic bar end shifters for aero bars while bikepacking. A lot less complicated than Di2.
Excellent video! Good energy, product knowledge and production value. Just subscribed! Keep it up!
Don't forget to install those new wireless seatbelts in the van!
This looks amazing !! Thanks for the review !! Cheers from france !
Great review. If anyone is wondering, you don't need full SRAM gear either. I'm using the AXS derailleur with a Sunrace 12sp cassette, Shimano cranks and 12sp chain, and Wolf Tooth chainring. It's a Frankenstein but it works perfectly. Best and smoothest shifting I've ever had.
Yep that'll work! Wish we could've helped you with your purchase! Keep us in mind next time 😎
The best review and explanation I've seen yet. Thanks! I am seriously debating.
Thanks a ton! We'd love to help you out with any parts or questions you ever have.

Great run down! Love the new intro and that shirt, you should send me a shirt ;)
Best review on the AXS! thanks Mike.
Installed the kit tonight, brakes in the morning and riding all day tomorow in central Washington
Throughout the video you had me convinced, I was going to buy one....untill I heard the price 😆 I changed my mind very fast. It sounds like a great product though, thank you!
I haven't completely watched the whole video yet. I have several bikes and ride often but with the number I have it wouldn't be worth it since I ride one for a few days or weeks then go to the next. Plus I buy/collect so I'm just going to 105 especially since I've been reading bad reviews and service horror stories.
That price has got to come down. Awesome review of a awesome product for sure.
I enjoy every single video this channel puts out.
Kudos
It did! While the XX1 Upgrade Kit is still $1,000, X01 dropped to $800 and now there's GX AXS which is $600.
I think it's pretty damn cool, just it will never be in my ability to afford it. Great to see more videos again!
Thanks Kenny! Super stoked we can do 2 videos a week like I've always been wanting to!
where is the go fund me page imma buy u a new phone
Haha too funny... noticed that too
I got one as soon it came to the public, because I’m a mechanic and saw the advantages of having it, me being a hater of electric stuff on bikes........but this axs group is way better than anything i had ever have EVER😎is perfect.!!!!
no, not cable-actuated since day 1. The first derailleur from Campagnolo was hand (rod) actuated :) Great video!
Was going to mention that too!
Im so getting this!! cant wait to put this on my 9.8 👌
SX Eagle AXS, here I come.
This tickled me, but in all seriousness, it'll trickle down eventually.
I have nx cassete chain etc and am honestly thinking about using it
@@floatingmosque3813 I strongly believe that buying a casette that isnt a literal anchor is a better idea.
It’s not too bad on my bike, sort of used to it now anyway
It’s not too bad on my bike, sort of used to it now anyway
Anyone else find the mechanical click of shifters way more satisfying
YES!! Also, making a fundamental system of your bicycle require batteries to operate is utterly sacrilegious IMO. I hate the idea of it. I've worked on them, ridden them and I hate all electronic shifting systems. So unnecessary and so much horrible electronic waste... bicycles are supposed to be eco-friendly. These systems will not last nearly as long as mechanical ones. Also, I cannot remember the last time I "accidentally shifted too far." I have never had an issue with my mechanical groups besides big crashes that would affect ANY derailleur.
Great informative video! Wish I could get one for my trek build 😭
Every single review I read/watch on this group set is incredible, I’m definitely getting it.
Great vid. I too once put I knife in a plug socket. Only once. 👌 keep up the great content.
I have AXS XX1 and absolutely love it. The shifting is perfect, every time, load or not. Battery was the worry for me, but as mentioned in the review, I found its a non-issue. At first I was constantly checking the battery, but the charge really does last a long time (3-4 weeks riding everyday), depending on how much shifting is done. I have a spare battery but seriously doubt I will ever need it. I also have cabled Sram XX1 Eagle on another bike... cheaper, but there is also the eventual tension problems that present during a ride, and this will not happen with AXS.
Did the system come with an extra battery or did you have to purchase another one?
Great review! Thanks.
I just got the upgrade kit with 12 speed cassette and the axs dropper seat post. awesomely happy!!
Solid upgrade! Enjoy the lack of cables!!
I have it on my bike, love it, haven't had a problem at all using AXS
Cool review, thanks.
My new commencal meta am 29 xx is in the mail with a full axs build, can't wait to try it out
Dude your the best only thing slow down when you explain stuff ,always great info !!!
Thanks Mark! Just gotta keep things moving along or else videos will be 15 minutes minimum haha.
Noooo speed is good. I wouldn't watch a video that's too long like a movie series.
Awesome video! Thanks.
Great Job !
Nicely done. Kudos
Next year:

Take it out of the shed and watch it go
You guys are so underrated
brilliant overview..
Thanks for this video. You actually answered my biggest question. Which was compatibility with GX Drivetrains. I was originally under the impression that I had to the change the chain at a minimum to make it work. Something to consider if/when I kill my current derailleur.
Thanks Jason! Glad I could help! Definitely keep it in mind for when Mr.Derailleur dies and shoot us an email / phone call or order from our website. We'd love to help you out with anything you ever need!
When it comes to that I'll just stop by. My daughter is going to WWU.
Definately for dentists 😂
When they have a GX level version out I'll consider it.
It's funny going through these comments now that GX is out at $600. So many people here saying I'll wait for GX, and now that day is finally here.
I have a x01with cabel since 1 month and i Love it
I've opted for the Axs gx upgrade kit replacing a Shimano xt 11speed set up, used an nx cassette and an xx1 chain, I've been running it for a few weeks now and it's been perfect, I've had impacts on it with no issues, really clever interaction between my Garmin 830 too, super easy to set up and battery life seams good, love a less cluttered cockpit, haters gonna hate, but I love it!
Electronic/wireless has been proven for over a decade in road bikes. Reliability of this technology is amazing. Great video!
Nice add man, rich kids are going to love this new toy.
Damn, you actually reviewed that awesome! Nice job, instantly subbed!
Why is the x01 and xx1 upgrade kit the same?
because the only difference is the colour and the carbon cage on xx1
Thanks, awesome video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching!!
So 2k to get rid of that one unsightly cable? Where do I sign up!
I just ordered a canyon lux trail cf 8 with the new GX AXS!I'm so exited,i almost shit my pants!
Awesome Video :)
Thanks a ton Manuel!!
I think axs is a very cool concept and I definitely see it as the future of mtb drivetrains. Although the price is high right now, in 2-3 years I doubt it will be so. The only improvement I could se happening here is a definitive way to know if your battery is low. You mentioned an app from sram in the video that helps tune the derailleur, I think a simple notification on your phone to charge the ax’s battery would be a helpful improvement.
Once you get used to checking it, it's just second nature. But yeah a phone notification would be sweet!
No
I have a fixie. The drivetrain and brakes are completely wireless and paid 300$ for complete bike
Hey Mike, another great video. How does the cassette look after 6 months? Has all the rainbow colour worn off? You know like the black always wears off on the other Sram cassettes.
I like the idea of the upgrade kit. All I need to do is stash away $100 a month and by next season I’ll be wireless! Plus when you go to sell your bike you just swap out the axis derailer and “controller” with the old derailer / shifter and you get to keep the wireless setup. Not a bad system I’d say!
I've had thumb pain from a past injury come up only by one thing - shifting my bike. Slamming the downshift button a few times before climbs adds up and aggravates my thumb joint. I just bought an AXS because it seems like the controller is like clicking a mouse compared to using a shifter, plus it seems to be the best / least annoying derailleur on the market.
Screw the group set - love your hair.
After a few rides with gx axs. Yeah I’m a huge fan. Now I need a 200mm reverb axs.
I have ordered / asked for an all gold XX1 AXS to be built in gold, for my new Fezzari La Sal Peak. I didn’t know that could even be a possibility of the just the up grade kit, with the xx1 gold. till I came across your video. Most excellent!!!!!
What are your thoughts on my Bling out request??
tbh the idea of a wireless post dropper and derailer while not having a single mechanical cable on a bike sounds pretty appealing for clean setup. wish they came with an extra battery for the price though
Have you had any issues with battery popping off or getting loose when riding in rough chatter? From the vid the battery seemed to somewhat easily detach. Would be concerned when accidentally putting the bike down or taking a spill on the drivetrain side. Thanks and awesome vid!!!
I agree with the phone comments!
Can we send you an Otter Box?
That phone was like Jason jumping out from behind a door or Freddy Kruger sneaking up behind me! :-0
Haha I saw how destroyed Alex's (our filmer) phone was and couldn't NOT put on the video that was his so I didn't get heckled to death hahaha.
that hit protection is DOPE
Mike..that phone..come on bro! Lol
Phone scared the hell outta me! Ha!
Next year, wireless brakes 😂
Still waiting for wireless tires!!
Nope. You could not pay me to ride wireless brakes like I ride my shimano 4 pots!
@@captaintraction4024 ill stay with those than wireless
Technically they already are 🤫
2000 dollars for mountain bike nah boy for somebody to rob me wow
1st . axs looks so sick in that oil slick👌🏼🤘🏼

It all looks sick. That ferrari paddle shifter. Its like if Elon had designed a groupo.
Dude! I freaking love your energy, thanks for keeping it real, I think the price is fair enough for such a genius product! I've Sram eagle GX on my Remedy and I'm interested in the upgrade kit for $1000 as it's within my budget. Great video , keep up the good work 👍👍

@@TheLostCo , Awesome 👍👍, I sure will.
A friend of mine has it and I actually got to play with it. Very nice staff No Doubt. I have Eagle xo1 groupset on my bike and I'm happy with it. I can't see going out and spending $1,000 to replace it. I literally have 5 miles on my groupset and the resale value of the derailleur shifter and cable wouldn't get me anywhere near $1,000 for the ASX upgrade. Maybe if / when the prices come down I'll get on board.
Totally! Its awesome, but not worth the "drop of the hat" upgrade for most people.
The controller took awhile getting used to and the derailleur being so quiet took a little getting used to but now I understand what you mean after riding for a couple months
I’ve been running shimano XTR for a few years and most people didn’t know such a thing existed. It works wonderfully and perfectly every time. Plus the battery lasts for 6 months.
Thats awesome! Electronic shifting is definitely sweet!
What do you think of your di2 now.
Crazy question but definitely a possibility this winter. Any issues running in the cold or winter months as mentioned in comments has been tested in rain and unit is sealed very well but not in ice or snow. Surprisingly enough there's some crazy Canadians like my self that would run this all year round
It works flawlesslly so if you've got the extra money so it doesn't hurt your pocket just go for it! But honestly it's just not worth killing your budget just to get rid of cables cause it changes gear just like any other top of the line cabled groupset.
Gonna go into my next xc race with a signal jammer. #winning
Just heard about you through Jeff Kendall-Weed....so give him a high five from me :)
Without the battery in the reverb post, does it default to up, down or wherever you left it? I'm thinking: if your derailleur ran out of juice, could you put the post in an in-between position and just leave it there with a dead battery while you continue on your merry ride?
Question
you said it’s compatible with any sram eagle family so if i wanted to change everything to ax’s including the cassette off my NX eagle would it work?
I can afford it, but.... my wife wouldn’t understand 😜🤘🏻
Some things are worth the beating
Laurie McDermott Agreed😂
@@lauriemcdermott1826 OMG.....haha....just pissed my pants!!
Man the fuck up!

I want this... But first - new dropper post, then adjusting everything to make bike for ergonomically better, then, another chain, then when group set wears out... I'm totally getting wireless!
the best thing about electronics no need to tune the bike. I have mine for more than a year haven't tune it and shift perfectly till now
I did mine last year. It is a game changer. Buttery smooth shifting and super quick.
Great video, I would like to know the following:
1) Is the gear change once you click the button or once you let it go ?
2) Mixed reports around for gear change speed. Is it faster or slower when comparing to lets say Shimano XT/XTR which consider to be the fastest today?
Thanks!
TTB I have one, it’s faster than any cable actuated shifter. The shift happens on the push. If you don’t let go, it keeps shifting
@@bmonroe1 Thank you!
Correct. It happens as soon as the click the button. It shifts incredibly fast, its crazy! In my opinion it absolutely shifts faster than cable actuated drivetrains.
If you're doing the upgrade, you can find all AXS parts on our website @ tinyurl.com/yx82e6rs
We'd love to help you out! 🤘
Love the upgrade option especially because my drivetrain is still pretty new!
Question: With higher confidence in perfect shifting, did you find yourself shifting more often?
Seriously debating this and I'm no dentist..
For 1x i dont think its necessary or have much benefit vs a well tuned mechanical. For 2x (road) you at least have syncro shift and auto trimming.
Not for me, I have too many batteries as it is.
I do like the rear der brake away feature though. I have had 2 issues this past year with hangers being bent.
Yep that break away feature is my favorite part!!
I want it because my shifter cable is routed through my frame and his causes drag on the cable causing missed shifts.
Hi there very clear review. Just want to ask if i can use the gx eagle cassette on that axs rear derailuer. Do you think there would be an issue if i pair it with gx eagle 12 cassete? Thanks
no, there would be no issue at all. everything would shift perfectly.
$1000 for a derailer is basically the price of my bike, but it does look really nice if you can afford it
100% into this, but I'd need to save up for like a year to buy just the upgrade kit... gonna wait a lil bit
Haha totally! Not cheap!
I bought a Xx1 axs group set, can I replace the derailleur for the X01 ? Will Work 100% perfect?
Have you noticed any kind of delay between when you hit the controller and when it actually shifts?
Yes it is expensive but all the reviews of this product has been good.
Hey very cool video. Do you think the system will work good if haooens to be under the water? Vary rarely but here in Florida I have had to drive uner 1ft of water where rear derraullier have being under the water as my shoes and wheel hubs. So I wonder if that would be something to consider
it should work, they claim its waterproof, but look around at sram information. they have a good website.
At first I was like, nope..not me. Then I rode one with an AXS and I’m sold. I also like the oil slick color and the clutter free cockpit. & I am not a dentist. I’m a PI 🕵️♂️
ChedengMB Magnum....is that you?😜
I'm about to make the plunge. Not because I'm crazy about the SRAM Eagle AXS but because I got a great deal on a barely used Specialized HT that is loaded with this group set. I figure, what the hell, i am getting such a good price it's almost like getting axs for no more than a mechanical group set. If i don't like it I will just put it on my son's bike lol
I may look to go back to wire after the chain snapped twice on the S works. the system puts a lot of strain on the chain because the derailleur can switch many gears in one go. This normally happens when the derailleur fail to respond when you want it giving the impression it didn’t receive the switch signal so you end up pressing the button multiple times and suddenly find yourself jumping many gears. The command also lacks feel as it snaps into the next gear. They need to update the software to stop it from multiple shifts in one go. The system is relatively new, I’m sure improvements can be made.
Mike, i have an issue with my RD I’m just an MTB rookie learning how fix my own MTB i have a new SRAM X01 Eagle 12sp the problem is when i ride on the bumpy trail the gear shift by it self down but on the rosd it’s fine. Hope you can help,Thanks
Okay so I picked up an AXS set recently. It seems that using multishift a lot under power tends to move the derailleur out of adjustment slightly. Now it's not more than one or two micro adjustments out but I will tend to hear it on the 42 and 32 tooth sprocket. What is your experience with this? I will say that this never happens on single shifts but I can do it repeatedly on a repair stand using the multi shift option several times.
if it only happens on a workstand why worry about it?
Can I switch to one gear in the front and like 11 in the back on a 3*7 cycle?
