    I hate how you hear really tasty licks just as the song starts to fade out lol. That last fiery lick(1:10) just as the song fades is a great example; you just want to hear the solo right to the very end ! Brett Garsed's outro solo on John Farnham's cover of "A Long way to the Top" on Age of Reason Cd is another perfect example.

    Hello there,
    Nice video but just a little tip,
    Try to repeat every lick a few times before moving on to the next one straight away
    Even if they are easy, it still takes time to remember each phrase exactly and it always feels a bit rushed causing me to have to pause and rewind constantly
    Also would be great if you could go more into detail about the timing of licks since that seems to be less priorotized by guitarists
    Other than this keep it going you're doing a good job

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  5 років тому +9

      Thanks for the tip! I wanted this one to be a “no bs” lesson, hence why there are no repeats. But I’m curious what people think about that so thanks for sharing 👌✌️

    • @davidhebrank9946
      @davidhebrank9946 5 років тому +11

      You can do that yourself. He's showing the notes. Its really up to you get the feel and timing. He is showing the timing and feel but just not explaining it. That would take forever. Listen to the record and play along. If u can't then you have some more things to work on. He has other videos for that

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  5 років тому +5

      Very good points David, that was exactly my thoughts. It’s hard to accommodate sometimes because, more experienced guitar players will appreciate faster paced videos, but less experienced players often want slower paced videos with plenty of explanations 😅 Either way, as David proposes, with time, effort, and a good ear, anyone will get this down regardless of their experience 😎👏

    awesome tutorial man! i was just wondering why he's playing the B minor pentatonic over a B major chord?

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  5 років тому +3

      John makes his own rules up bro 💁‍♂️😂 I believe it's just down to his familiarity and taste of blues. The minor pentatonic delivers a wonderful tension over the major chords, but you'll notice that he'll often bend up that minor third briefly to "resolve" it to the major third. Give it a try yourself. Play the major pentatonic over the chords, and then minor. You might notice that major works, but it sounds a little boring (in my opinion). Versus, minor has a lot more to say 🙂

    • @Jamesyates2609
      @Jamesyates2609 5 років тому

      Darryl Syms I guess resolving the major third could make this more dominant sounding rather than just minor?

    Thanks for the great video! But why John is playing this solo in Bm pentatonic scale? Some websites says this songe is in the key of E

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  4 роки тому +1

      Good question. Not sure where "E" comes from, because the key of B. The recurring chords are B -> E, I -> IV. This means that technically B major pentatonic would be a better decision, so why did John use Bm? Well there's a couple reasons. The only note that is "wrong" in the Bm Pentatonic scale over a B major chord would be the b3 interval. Notice however that John does not hang out on this note for long, and more than often bends it up which sharpens the note towards the "correct" major 3rd degree. It's a good means to add flavour. It doesn't always work, but depending on the style and chords that are being played over, it can sound very tasteful. Over the solo of this song, the B chord in the backing track has no major 3rd, which makes the solo progression (technically) B5 -> E. By removing the 3rd degree, it allows John to play with the 3rd, rather than there being a clash between John and the backing instruments.
      Hope that helps! P.S - websites are often wrong, so be careful with what you read. 90% of tabs I read online are a bit dodgy 💁‍♂️

    How low is your guitar action?

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  5 років тому +1

      10/10 low. Although since I've travelled and lived in a humid place for a while now, it's probably a 9/10 nowadays.

    • @Sandarpan
      @Sandarpan 5 років тому +1

      @@DarrylSyms Yeah, I've been watching your videos for quite a while now and I've always noticed that you have super low action. Always wondered though how crazy the buzzing might be. Acoustically. Plugged in it surely gets drowned in the gain. I've set up my guitar to be as low as possible with very slight buzz (usually near the middle). Set my relief to about 0.2mm on the low e. And as for humidity, I'm in India and it's like always 85% + in the summers where I live. So I always setup my guitar while the Air Conditioning is not on. I get pretty drastic humidity changes with the AC on and off. So much that I used to wonder why my tunings go out so much even when I've not touched my instrument.

    • @DarrylSyms
      @DarrylSyms  5 років тому

      Very interesting! It’s been a long time since I’ve had the guitar setup but I THINK it’s between 1mm on the low and 1.75mm on the high. No annoying buzzez at all. I got lucky with this guitar. It’s a warrior 💪 Your humidity circumstances are much worse than mine - wowza! I’ve flown around the world and moved to a humid country with this guitar, so it’s definitely not as low as it used to be. It could do with another setup sometime soon!!

    Really really good Darryl! There is just one lick he plays different, it´s the one at 0:47. It´s so damn stupid cause he has so large hands that he can actually do it. So he he plays the B note on the e string with his first finger and the a note on the b string with his second (all first position pentatonic) and hammers on the octave B on the b string with his third finger to create a pedal like sound. You can he see it in his video and it´s just impossible for me x) Atleast one can replicate that in another position higher up the frets...

      Wowza that is impressive! I've never seen that before! However, what he plays there is definitely not identical to what's on the final record of course, so maybe it's questionable. For example, on the record he does two hammer ons, but in this video he only does one. Either way though, collectively they all sound very similar and certainly do the trick! 🙂 I'd never even seen this video!! 😝 Thanks for sharing 😄

      That was my intentions 😋 A lot of people appreciate lessons that get straight on with the point, but it’s hard to please everyone I guess 💁‍♂️ I think it teaches people to use their ear more rather than being baby fed through the whole process - just a thought 🙂 Best of luck!! Use the slow mo & rewind button as much as you need 👌
