Top 100 Post-Punk Songs, Old School Post-Punk 70's And 80's
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of rock music that emerged in the late 1970s in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a broader, more experimental approach that encompassed a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and do it yourself ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the production techniques of dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, cinema and literatura. These communities produced independent record labels, visual art, multimedia performances and fanzines.
The early post-punk vanguard was represented by groups including Siouxsie and the Banshees, Wire, Public Image Ltd, the Pop Group, Magazine, Pere Ubu, Joy Division, Talking Heads, Devo, Gang of Four, the Slits, the Cure, and the Fall. The movement was closely related to the development of ancillary genres such as gothic rock, neo-psychedelia, no wave, and industrial music. By the mid-1980s, post-punk had dissipated, but it provided a foundation for the New Pop movement and the later alternative and independent genres.
Seeing Bauhaus sent a lightning bolt down my back.
The post punk sound was so recognisable and so very cool! What an amazing time in music!
Bauhaus and Joy Division 🖤🖤
The Cure 🖤
I still listen to all this great bands.Their Music stands the test of time,it is maybe the soundtrack to my life.Beeing young in the eighties was great.
The Cure is and has always been on another level.
Love The Chameleons. Also should include The Comsat Angels.
as always FELT is forgotten
THE SOUND Total recall
MODERN ENGLISH I melt with you
THE CHAMELEONS Loocking inwardly
Wow , Robert Smith is so young and cute lol. But I also love how he looks now
Old and fat
Can't argue with #1 and #2 and loved seeing some Chameleons in the mix
What a fantastic list! That brought back memories of listening to John Peel under the bed-covers on my transistor radio!
Brilliant list!
Hong Kong garden what a choon Mcgeoch, phenomenal
That's John McKay - John McGeoch is on Arabian Nights for the Banshees and the three Magazine tracks on the list
very broad definition of post punk.
some more "pure" post punk artists with great songs:
- Swell Maps
- Young Marble Giants
- The Television Personalities
- Fire Engines
- Section 25
- The Wake
- Xmal Deutschland
- early Go Betweens
- early Pulp
-
The Television Personalities - Yes
Television personalities are a must on this list
Joy Division rocks!
Best on there 👌 ❤
not
for sure
❤
Love
Oh my God, thank you so much for posting this. This is a wealth of songs some I do know and love, but some I just learned about so thank you very much for posting.!!!!!!
Im so so so glad you put The Sound in this list. Super underrated!!! Same with the Chameleons ❤
I share your opinion
I love The Sound, especially Jeopardy but Chameleons sucks is overrated. weird you have put in the same sentence one of my favs and one of those i dislike the most
@@idontcareaboutyou7757 "we don´t care about you" and your opinion on The Chameleons mate... Btw "Second Skin" is one of the greatest songs ever and should have made the list...
@@JoeSmith-wr7mi i dont care about you is a great tune but someone who likes the Shiteleons cant know no shit of Fear. and to be more accurate, as Lee Ving sings, i dont care about you, fk you. Haha. be my btch.
It's a good list. I'd add a few though, like Jackie Onassis by Human Sexual Response, Goo Goo Muck by the Cramps, Los Angeles by X, I'm in Love with a German Film Star by the Passions, and some others. But for a Brit-centric list it's good.
Great choice for number one.
Great list! And a few I've never heard before.
Thank you takes me back to the days of listening to John peel ,David jenson and Annie nightingale
Great to see The Gun Club and Pere Ubu on this list.
But where is Fad Gadget's Collapsing New People, Tuxedomoon's No Tears, Cabaret Voltaire's Nag Nag Nag or Spizz Energy's Where's Captain Kirk?
Really enjoyed it. A lot of thought and effort went into this. Thanks for taking the time.
Excellent selection !!! I could even say perfect but there s so many anthems to the genre. Play me that at a party and i m on the dancefloor all night ! And hats off for putting modern english with the good tracks . they re often forgotten..
The Names
Magazine
Joy Division
Sad Lovers & Giants
❤🖤🥀🐈⬛🦇
My favorite bands!!!
Fking brilliant thanks for the memories ❤best times ever. Miss them so much much 😢
Lots of B-movies here! (and few classics of course). Special thanks for Durutti Column, the slits, berry berry, turn to red, Gang of Four, premonition, Wire...
Missing: Im in love with a german film star, The Sound, Starshooter, Sisters of Mercy, And also the trees, softcell, etc.
Well, all top lists are a subjective exercise.
Good list but there's a few glaring admissions from bands like The Comsat Angels, The Opposition, Modern Eon, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Little Nemo, Asylum Party, Party Day.
Another fantastic video!
Thanks ! That was fantastic. I was 16 when I went to my first gigs in 1978 at the end of Punk. I saw The Clash, Banshees,Spizz Oil, Human League, SLF. I felt sad that I had missed out on 76/77 gig wise. But really I felt an optimism that there were bands out there that were inspired by Punk to try something a bit different and not M.O.R. This selection is excellent. And I was thrilled to have that rush re kindled. I’d forgotten
Nice one. That sounds great.
lucky bastard you to watch all those great gigs 😄😄😄🤭
@@idontcareaboutyou7757 haha thx. The Clash gig was attacked by Skinheads at the and, we got crushed behind the exit door as the stewards closed them. There were injuries and we had to run to the bus station through a baying crowd. !!! Fun stuff
@@weatherwithyou4122 wonderful experiences, when i was a teenager my first live gig was Nina Hagen, the second the Banshees wich i love. i have no idea how come they played in a small south Italy town but it was mesmerizing for a young kid with no internet around. i had to wait till i was 20 to attend another great gig, the Cure promoting Wish (Warm-up tour) a wonderful event in a small place, Cambridge, face to face with them. great memories.
The Cure 🖤 ...
Psi Com's singer Perry Farrell then went on to form Jane's Addiction, pretty cool 😎
Unbelieveable .... I actually agree with the top 2.....
Got me own list but despite that: I NEEDED THIS.
Thanks!
Thank you! 💝
In Shreds Chameleons!! Surely!!
100% agree with this
Awesome list, some of my favourite bands when I was a teenager, thanks for putting it together
Fantastic work! Love it
That was so cool. Thnks
Cool
This is brilliant!
This amazing!!! I am sure this took much effort to put together...I have heard many of these for 30 years or more! Thanks a bunch!
actually good picks. saw DA and this heat in the first few and knew this list was in good hands
sods, suburban lawns, polyrock, au pairs, wall of voodoo, the sound
✌️👍😊🌹🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤yes... richtig 👍
great stuff
I agree with #1
Adrian Borland❤
At least half of U2's "Boy" album should be on this list. An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart, especially. "Ahead" by Wire is another glaring omission. Otherwise, nice trip down memory lane.
Bauhaus ⭐️
The Damned????
More Mission of Burma! If you liked this list, try the songs "Funworld," "Academy Fight Song," "Peking Spring", and "Max Ernst." Then the entire Vs album
i love the bands you chose!
Wow !!!! Increíble lista!!! Yo creía que sabía de música.... Todavía me falta mucho....
Algún temita viejo de the Police... .la verdad me limpió esta lista... Gang of four de mis favoritas...
Surprised of how many of these songs/bands I have on my own playlist🖤
Siouxsie Sioux is the Queen!
of course she is
Only a couple of Wire. Criminality here.
Chameleons❤
fron japan good
One song of The Sound??? And Second Skin of the Chameleons???
Respekt man great List! Are all the videos on UA-cam?
❤❤🤘🏼🤘🏼
UK DECAY all albums, my top
I'd forgotten how much I liked them until I watched this!
Aonde entra Tree Johns??? e muito mais??????
Siouxie the bee's knees, RnR Goddess 👉👉🤟🤟
great list, I would add some comsat angels songs such as after the rain
Someone likes their Modern English and The Chameleons 😄😄
a very deep dive, any list that has numerous JOY DIVISION songs near the top is tops on my list..
By and large I agree, I would have had a few more XTC tracks in there, though.
my Yoof in 9 minutes, Siouxsie, Cure, Jesus and Mary Chain, P.I.L., pmsl baby bono U2 :D
I reckon transmission and Love will tear us apart need swapping
Genesis "Keep It Dark"
Not enough Killing Joke. (I'm both kidding and absolutely serious at the same time, of course.) Seriously, though, great list. Going to have to dig into a few of the artists that were new to me.
How could you leave out Spizzenergi/ Athletico Spizz 80? Even the Mo-dettes were wearing his tshirt... 🤷♂️🤦♂️
Punk rock owes a debt to the Kinks. And not including their song, The Hard Way is criminal.
Post-punk has probably given me more pleasure than any other branch of the rock family tree. The Fall. Magazine. Joy Division. Echo and the Bunnymen. The Smiths. The Cure. Sonic Youth. Talking Heads. Public Image Limited. Erm...Television were before post-punk but I'll include 'em. Who have I forgotten? Erm...I like loads of other stuff from after 1978-ish but I probably like those bands the best but not in any order. They're all good.
Yeah...I forgot Young Marble Giants. Wurlitzer Jukebox is a phenomenal YMG track.
In this video there are a lot of fantastic songs but Robert Smith is the best ever and ever
FUCK YEAH, DA - with Dark Rooms!!
I was excited when I saw them on here. I have a compilation LP of their music on vinyl.
So, there are The Blondie band?
No Sisters of Mercy? No The Cult? WTF...
They're on the top-100 goth video the same account made.
INTERZONE (joy div.) is missing, the manifesto of post punk, and at least one Blondie song. Also, a couple of 87 songs are total out of period, (Jesus and Mary Chain? c'mon) for the rest you made a great job with many lost treasures.
No sale THE DAMNED
PIL were defintely the first 'post punk' band.
I'd have said Magazine - they'd already finished recording Real Life while PIL was still forming and released it 6 months before First Issue
@@mindtpi possibly, it's really an abstract concept because the label didn't exist obviously. I think the similarities were that both lead singers decided to move on quickly. Some of Magazine's sound I defintely class as punk.
Here’s an idea just let each song play all the way through
Do you know The Plastics from Japan?
Can this be a Spotify playlist? Yes. It can.
And Glen Branca? No no wave?
Devo
Number 10, Wire "the 15th"
Wrong song ! The clip you use is is not "the 15th".
only one that should not be there... U2
No “play dead “?????????
Remember seeing them supporting Killing Joke: fantastic live band.
TRANSMISSION ❤😫🫶
Umm, Disorder? HELLO?
Where's "too drunk to f***" by Dead Kennedys?
It's not here
Hardcore punk rather than post punk - maybe another list for another time?
Come on, no late-period Clash or early Midnight Oil smh
Midnight Oil had a couple of good songs, but you'd never call them "post-punk"
@@mindtpi The earlier stuff like Head Injuries and 10-1 definitely is (if wikipedia is anything to go by)
Not one of these bands are as raw as the Sex Pistols. Not even PIL!
Questionable list.
2024 : PSYCH ROCK :
1 Anton Newcombe
2 Richard Ashcroft
3 Kurt Vile
