Cool video. Listening to you tell a story well reminded me of reading your book. A lot of magic in your story of meeting your female travel partners at age 18. And as we get older, the chances of that happening again may decrease somewhat but it’s still possible, you never know.
Gabriel, the shops, companies, and most of the public places are closed for the ,,siesta,, from 2 (or 2:30) pm until 5 (or 6 ) pm , as it is too hot to work (but in the winter all is closed also 😏) After that, all is open again. The tourist shops and the Taverna's/Restaurants remain open. Thank you for your great stories !! 👍
Whenever I watch you, I feel you are utmost spiritual person to follow your path as well as to being within. You go on and on, freedom of soul accompanies you holding your hand. You sacred yourself with great reverence to the mother Earth. I applaud you for cherishing your viewers through your journey.
Interesting travel stories… thanks for sharing. I lived in Greece in the 70’s & 80’s and honestly miss it so much!! I still enjoy the cuisine-,😎👍from Canada 🍁 🇨🇦❤️
Be careful, man...I'm dizzy from watching the video. 30 years ago it was another world for travelers. I had no credit card, no phone, no translator app. Bought a train Eurail pass and would sleep on the couchettes or seats to save on hotels. Many times would leave my backpack in the train station locker and just walk around the whole day. Had one of those Frommer's "Europe on $10 a day" guides.
I loved hearing your story about your first travels. I did similar in 1993 when i was 20 years old. Those were the days of true adventure travel, where I didn't know where I would rest my head that night.
6:19 As a European from Austria, I can only confirm that since we have the EURO in Europe, everything has been up to 50% more expensive. I went on vacation to Croatia in 1992. (Balkan War) In the local restaurant we gave a € 5 dip. (That was probably hundreds of Croatian KUNA) then the waiter closed the whole place and just wanted to chill out with us on the beach. That was a good time back then.
The Euro is a disaster. Wish it collapsed back in 2015 when Greece still had the chance to leave it. Many other countries would’ve followed suit, but Tsipras swindled the winning Oxi vote and bent over for Merkel + the Euro mob
Wow, great video, this whole series about Greece, takes me back to the early 80's, spent 3 months and 2 months there, traveling the islands and sleeping on the beaches...those days you could leave your backpack almost anywhere and come back to it that evening and it would still be there untouched.... guessing may not be the case now... Love your videos and keep on traveling......
Hey Gabriel, I started watching you 5 years ago. I have to say that your videos are very original and unique. By the way I love your long stories, keep them coming when feel like it.

OHHHHHHHHH MY, I would not be climbing the way you were. Not even at gunpoint. I used to do stuff like but as I got older and realized how easy it is to die I became afraid of heights. I'm really enjoying these videos of the Greek Islands it makes me want to go traveling again. I was just reading about all of that area but most of it was about Turkey. It was talking about how they want to build a new canal to relieve the traffic on the canal running through the middle of Istanbul. Very interesting story.

Ya, I remember my tent backpack keep cost ultra low travels in early 80s with a great time in Greece paradise. Lamented the fact that the early 70s were gone and Europe on $5 a day was no longer practical.
I went to Mykonos around 1985-6 when the dollar was very high. We flew on Monarch Airlines from London round trip. Included a 7 night nice hotel which had a little balcony and was great location but not a water view. It was $150. I also remember going to Corfu in 1972 and paid about $4 for a hotel room. When I see what you are paying now for food reminds me of how inexpensive it was years ago.

Hi Gabriel, I hope you enjoy your Paxoi journey. Voutoumi beach in Antipaxoi is a MUST, you have to go there the colours of the sea are amazing. There is a tavern up the hill where the view is superb, have an ouzo there and enjoy life in the Greek way :) I hope it is open and running but you can check it out. There is also a great bar - restaurant in Paxoi named Erimitis, up in the cliffs with a stunning view especially in the sunset, check it out also! PS. You have to visit Lefkada too and complete the whole Ionian islands tour. Then you will have visited the three most iconic beaches you can find in the Ionian islands (Navagio, Myrtos, Porto Katsiki)!!!!
Hi Gabriel, again a really good Video! Your series about the Ionian islands made me thinking about a Tour there. Been only to Corfu. I have been to Greece 9 Times and spent most of my time in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. 33 islands so far. Could you please reveal us the name of the beach at the very beginning? Go on travelling!
Amazing to hear your story from 31 years ago. Unbelievable to see those pictures of the 18 year old version of you. I hope you'll run into Joanna again and do some more travel together for old times sake.
Are you planning on visiting the remaining Ionian Islands Gabriel - Kythira, Antikythira, Ereikousa, Mathraki, Othonoi, Meganisi and Strofades? Also the eastern side of the island of Pano Koufonisi in the Cyclades has some of the most beautiful beaches you’ve ever seen.

Obviously this will be great for the mainland, but I can also take it on ferries to some islands. Thoughts please!! Keep up with the GREAT content,, it’s incredible.
I'd think it would be expensive to take a car on the ferries. Crete is maybe the largest island and you can find just about everything the islands offer on just this one island. Just a thought.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Thanks, I guess I just have to make sure the ferry I’m taking can take a car, and maybe get a bike rack on the back of the car and buy a cheap bike to run around on. Anyway thank you.
@@rubytuesday9539 Crete is definitely on my list, in fact on my three month trip, I’m looking at budgeting almost a month just on Crete. Everyone I talk to raves about Crete. What are some of your favorite things there?
@@texasbear2060 well, I was there a long time ago, in 1983, so at least economically things have changed. Things appear much more modernized, and a lot more expensive now. But, the natural beauty would still be there. Most people enter at Heraklion, which is devoid of charm and is best vacated asap. From there most tourists head east to the beach towns along the north coast and there they stay for a week before flying back to Heathrow. I don't recall finding this area very interesting until getting all the way to Sitia, though there might be some small unspoiled villages on the way. If you go down the east coast from there are several small villages and beautiful, quiet beaches that I can't remember the names of. I didn't find the south coast too memorable but a lot of that may have to do with personal circumstances than what was actually there. To the west, the Gorge of Samaria is a great hike that ends at an interesting beach. The ruins of the old civilization is of historical interest, can't recall the proper names atm. The interior of the island, away from the touristed beaches, is definitely worth exploring, more like real Greece. The caves at Matala are cool. Meet some locals who will offer you some homemade raki, which is much more common than retsina, but a rather acquired taste. The local wines are excellent. Back then, "Let's Go" had an entire book just on Greece that was fairly useful. There's probably better info available now. Certainly there is a lot just on Crete that I didn't see.

I hope you finally went to Antipaxos. It has one of the best beaches of Greece. The water is very swallow and actually for the first 40 or 50 meters an average person can go walking on the sandy bottom. It’s like a huge pool. Very safe beach for children. It has been discovered from many VIP’s which visit it with their huge yachts and take a swim in it away from the crowds that sometime amass there. I hope you have also rented a speed boat and taken a tour all around Paxos because there are lots of caves and places ideal for swim. There is even a place named Ortholithos which is a huge tall rock in front of a sea cave that served in WW2 as the lair of the famous Greek submarine Papanikolis. Papanikolis was the fear of the Italian battle fleet and Italian commercial ships. It sunk at least 6 ships in the region and due to its action forced the Axis powers to suspend many comvoys of ships from Italy to Greece or even to Malta.
Thanks for jumping in the water Gabe. Love that part of your videos, especially because you almost always choose secluded not crowded beaches where the nature is more authentic and untouched and it brings back memories of my childhood in the Albanian Riviera, when beaches were absolutely gorgeous, the water crystal clear and the villagers so hospitable and caring. Not spoiled yet by the capitalist urges, the ugliness of concrete and the man-made noises they call music ;p

I agree, maybe he has a death wish
Yes, it is disconcerting and makes ME NERVOUS!!
Your right crazy religious wars!! Fantastic with it so quiet but very sad for the locals ha? The island looks vert green & lush. Love your videos & some great stories Gabriel. Great content much love from the uk 🇬🇧💕💕
Have you ever taken a sailboat betwixt the Greek isles? That looks like it could be a blast.
At that time, the value of the dollar was higher than it is now 30/40
I just wonder how cool it would be if Gabriel had video footage of that trip he took back in 1990.
Yeah I wish. That would be a trip.
