Normcore v4 Self leveling calibrated Tamper vs v3 Decent brand and Cheap self leveling Tampers

- All of them work nicely. My preference is more based on how they feel to use.
I think for actual precise weight calibration you need to step up to a much more expensive tamper (like The Force or Bravo Tamper) otherwise the depth of the spring depression still can vary the amount of weight applied, although it's probably 'close enough'.
Update: Not sure if this is actually a 58.5mm one, it seems about as loose fitting or more loose than the Decent tampers base which should be a standard 58.35 I believe. The V3 Normcore I had less movement rattling around in the portafilter basket and sometimes had that issue where it created some suction but so far this one has not. So I might have gotten the wrong model shipped out to me. Note: I got this from a 3rd party retailer not from Normcore directly, the previous model which I did order directly from them was the correct size I had ordered.
Re: The end part talking about the depth.
Update: I believe I've used this tamper successfully with a 15g (light roast) dose just fine in the stock 18g basket.
Also, I remember with the V3 Normcore vs V3 Decent tamper I tried to measure how DEEP they can extend and found the Normcore was actually slightly deeper than the Decent (I may have loosened it so it extends a little more actually), Just re-tested with the V4 Normcore vs V3 Decent tamper it looks like they actually extend the same amount.
Just received the normcore today.
It's different from the v3 Decent that I have.
The Decent has a single spring that compresses.
The normcore has two.
The initial spring ensures the flat plate doesn't rise upwards as you push down.
Then when the tamper has reached tamping level, the second spring starts getting compressed and providing resistance.
I swapped to the lightest spring because I want precision feel of how much force I'm applying.
Yep correct. I haven't tried the other springs does it actually give you more feedback? It would give you less tamping pressure I believe in the v4 Normcore the supplied extra springs affect tamping pressure.
@@BensCoffeeRants it won't give you less tamping pressure. The maximum pressure the tamp allows is based on distance. Spring strength only determines how hard you need to push.
Lighter springs give you more tactile feedback of how far or how strong you pushed.
@@CorrupteddSanity I thought v3 normcore worked that way but v4 actually changed tamping pressure. I'll give it a try!
Thanks for the bit at the end about a max depth and anything under 16g in an 18g basket maybe not working. I’ve been wondering about this.
I think with most self leveling tampers you should be fine unless you severely under dose. I forget what I said here lol but I've been using 16g in my 18g stock basket and it works fine although now I've been using the Force Tamper I think it worked with Decent and Normcores as well.
My Normcore v4 has the soft pad on the base. So it might just have been missed for some reason, or they stopped. I had a raspy inner core so got a replacement, and between the two cores, the newer core had a slot cut in the top side, so if you unscrew the top and its stuck in the bottom, you can use a screwdriver instead of trying to get a grip on the upper threads.
5:23 the monolith disappeared!! 😭
It may make a re-appearance soon. It was just in the other room while I tested between the different 64mm SSP burrs in the other 3 grinders on the table!
normcore v4 shouldnt wobble - tighten the base
Everything is tight, yours doesn't wobble like that?
@@BensCoffeeRants not at all. There's two points to tighten. The tamp base. Then the core.
@@CorrupteddSanity I dissembled it. It was tightened up nicely already l noticed. I put in the weaker spring. It's even more noticibly wobbly now, I don't think that helped.
@@BensCoffeeRants mine doesn't wobble like that. Are you positive you screwed it into the handle? It appears loose. If you have, then I would return it.
@@CorrupteddSanity The shop I got it from says it's normal which I had thought was the case. Your sure you got v4?. Can you make a video testing the wobble on yours? I don't think it actually affects the performance of it though.
