    Hey Captain! Great video all the others I've seen left me feeling like "well no way I'll figure that out" yours is so well explained I bet even I can pull it off! What speed do you recommend trolling these skirted ballyhoo? Would they run well on a planer? Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏼

      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  3 роки тому

      Thanks a million for watching, leaving some great feedback, and asking some great questions. A skirted bally I would troll between 6 to 8 knots.... A naked bally I would slow it down to about 4 to 5 knots, otherwise they'll wash out quickly. And yes, you can pull a bally on a planer. Hope this helps. This is the way to rig ballyhoo. 4 dolphins lost yesterday because i was only using single hooks. They were striking hard on the second half of the bait.

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  3 роки тому

      Thanks a million for watching and sharing. Yes, it is a bummer when they strike the tail and you don't get hooked up. This is the way predator fish attack, they disable the prey by hitting the tail, then they swoop back around for the kill. Glad you found the video useful. You have a great un-intimidating instruction style, like hanging at the rigging table with you. One question: If you are trolling the Bally naked or with a non weighted skirt like that islander, do you add weight or is it ok to be near the surface? Thanks!

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  3 роки тому

      Thanks a million for watching and leaving some great feedback. I truly appreciate the compliment and support for the channel. It's entirely OK to troll on the surface... Dolphin, tuna, kingfish, bonito, barracuda, wahoo, sailfish, and marlin, all strike surface trolled baits. Personally, I like to mix it up, and try and get some on top and some down low, just to try and find where the fish are. Hope this helps. Thanks again. Tight lines & take care ;)

    Hi Heath,another very informative video ! I always had troubles rigging those Ballyhoo and therefore stopped using them. The problem is they do not swim well and it does not look hatural at alln either they spin or they just swim very strange. Do you have a video when I can see the ballyhoo on this swim ? Does it swim well ? Thank you Heath all the way from New-Caledonia.

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks a million for watching and leaving some great feedback. When rigging the ballyhoo it's ultra important to remove the digestive system and loosen up the spine by cracking it in several different places. This helps prevent the spinning. Trolling ballyhoo can be frustrating. They never really troll straight up and down, always on their side. You have a great idea and I will put it on my to do list. Spring is right around the corner and the Mahi will be migrating through, which will offer a perfect chance to showcase trolling ballyhoo. Thanks again for the idea and support of the channel. Tight lines & take care ;)

    Terrific video! If you buy ballyhoo and defrost them to rig, does it affect the bait when you refreeze it? If you defrost the bait for a trip can you refreeze the bait? If so, how many times? Thank you for great instruction. Love your channel.

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  2 роки тому +1

      Yes you can buy them frozen and thaw to rig. They usually only last 2 or 3 trips... that's why I bag 3. And I usually only bring 3. Unless the plan is to only use ballyhoo that day then I'll bring 2 or 3 bags... this helps cut down on waste.

  • @alexandratrinquet855
    @alexandratrinquet855 3 роки тому

    Great info, do you think we could used those with a down rigger?
    Also how can we be sure they stay in the natural position? Are the weight of the hook enough to keep them up side up?
    One last question at what speed do you troll those?

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  3 роки тому

      Thanks a million for watching and asking some great questions. Yes you can troll ballyhoo with down riggers or planers.... I troll them on a planer quite often. the natural swim positioning can be achieved by tucking the beak inside the head of the lure, if you have a lure that is trolled with a top and bottom, or you can thread a small egg sinker on the main line end and push it into the mouth before wrapping it shut. I have found through experience, that this really doesn't matter... what does matter, is that you loosen up the spine bone, so it doesn't spin. If your bait is spinning, that's no good. The natural position, is always questionable, as to what it really is, sometimes fish swim on their sides to escape danger... So, swimming straight up and down doesn't necessarily make it look any more natural. As for speed, if I have a lure in front of the ballyhoo, I'll troll 6 to 8 knots.... If the ballyhoo is bare I'll slow it down to 4 to knots. Hope this helps. Thanks again for watching and supporting the channel. Tight lines & take care ;)

    Thanks for these videos- you are the best! I've been meaning to ask a couple questions: first- what is the name of that red wire wrap you are using? Also how much line do you usually let out when you are trolling these? And how many lines do you prefer to troll at a time? I have a set of outriggers but they are a pain especially when you want to pick up and move to another area. Thanks again Heath!!

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  3 роки тому +2

      Hi, thanks a million for watching and asking some great questions... So, the red wire... There is no name for it... What it is, is it's the wires that are inside of an internet cable commonly known as cat5 or cat6 wire... If you slice it open you find the wires inside... I pull them out, untwist them and I'm good to go... Works better than wire leader for sewing the mouth shut. Next, i usually set out lines at different lengths... If I'm trolling 2 lines I'll do one at about 150 feet out and another at about 200-225. My boat is small so I'm usually only trolling 2 lines... I would definitely use the outriggers and go with 4 lines... I know it a lot of work but more baits in the spread equals higher hook up ratio... Keep your outrigger lines short, just past the white wash of your wake only about 75 - 100 feet out... Keep your center lines long.... Hope this info is helpful....be safe out there.... Tight lines & take care ;)

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  2 роки тому +1

      It's tricky to get both hooks facing upward there is a setup where you can do the one that's more towards the front facing upward and then the trailing plug faces down but I tend to not like that setup cuz when fish are hooked they're opening and closing their mouths all the time and they tend to push one hook out and get off. Hope this helps

  • @1539Mickey

    Hi Heath, That's a really cool rig. I guess you can add any kind of lure in front of the Ballyhoo, depending on your target species. The natural scent of the Ballyhoo should really help attract a bite. Do you rig other species of bait fish in the same manner ? It may be a good way to rig Peanut Bunker up here in NJ for the fall Striper run. Thanks for the information. Stay safe and good luck, Mickey

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  4 роки тому

      Hi Mickey. Thanks for watching. Yes this method of rigging is almost standard for any species... It helps if you understand the digestive tract and know how to remove it without destroying your bait. I'm sure it'll work with bunker. I do it with mullet also. Saves a ton of money. 3 rigged ballyhoo cost $18. Hope all is well with you and tour family. Take care 😃

    I have questions about surface mount rod holders. Tell us your philosophy about placement, quantity, and angles for somebody adding rod holders. I an buying a new Center Console boat and it only has 2 surface mount rod holders at the stern.

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and asking an interesting question... So when I got my boat I was in the same situation. I had 2 rod holders mounted at the stern of the boat on either side, one on the port and one on the starboard. I added 2 up by the console for ease of access as I do a lot of solo research and discovery. All 4 of these are angled out at approximately 45° from facing the rear, that way when I'm trolling it spreads the line out slightly and the lines aren't going straight back. I also added 2 rod holders up high on the railing around the console. These stand straight up and are up about 4 feet up from the deck. These lines go straight back and I usually troll them short, just past the whitewash of the wake, if I troll a third and fourth line, or I just use them for storage. Lastly, for storage, I have 2 sets of 3 rod holders on either side of the console. I also added rod racks on the port and starboard gunwales to store my gaffs. In all, I can travel with 8 rods and troll with 4 lines out... This is on a 2005 Key West 1720cc.
      Hope this helps.
