    Thank you, sir! These comparisons between CPU generations are most welcome indeed. I guess I´ll stick with my 4790K a couple of years more.

      AssassinKlD Yeah man, those 8700ks that can overclock to 5ghz without delid and still run on safe temps for a 24/7 oveclock on an air cooler are straight up gargabe fam. Get you one of those ryzen cpus that perform 60% worse for gaming and have a clock limit of 4ghz even on water that can't run ram over 3200mhz. That's the way to do it.

      What are you talking about m8, I'm running a Sandy i7. The last soldered gen chip, even with stock fan and 4.7GHz OC it never reach 70°C when gaming. Slapped on a $25 cooler and it chills at 55 in games is just great, the chip has served me 4 years no problem. Intel cutting cost with later gens and make buyers suffer from poor temp. Seeing people with newer i7's needing expensive coolers to achieve temps below 70 just makes me sad.

    I think that adding the gpu bound scenarios are important because like you said, it's a more realistic use case. I was having some buyers remorse from your last video (even though I got my i7 in 2015 lol) and now I feel much better about my hardware. I think it's a psychological thing, where you always look for the bad and not the good. Great video as always Steve, I really appreciate the work you do.

    I'm still rocking my 4770k! I have it paired with a GTX 1080 Ti and I see no point in upgrading the CPU. It's quite the gaming rig, but I also use Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and I make music as well. The 4770k is still a fantastic CPU and shows no signs of slowing down, at least in terms of what I use it for. Keep up the good work!

    Nice work. Thank you. So, the i7-8700K is 6-core CPU. It will be nice to find some i7-3930K or i7-4930K to compare. Im using i7-3930K @ 4600Mhz for about 5 years and Im wondering what i7-8700K will show against older 6-core Intel chips. :) We know that Sandy Bridge are some of the best chips of Intel, and the 6-core parts are very interesting in 2017 to compare, cos now Intel making 6-core cpu mainstream.

      Yeah hoping to see something like this too from HWUB. But we'll eventually put together a 1st Gen core i-series 6 core (Xeon w3680) vs 2nd/3rd gen 6 core (e5-1650v1 or v2) vs 8700k shootout. The w3680 is in hand, my brother has an e5-1650 I already have 4.5ghz numbers for, and two friends just got their 8700k systems together. Hmmmmm

      You mean AMD Ryzen made the 6-core CPU mainstream.
      I own an i5-8400, but give credit where credit is due. Intel didn't release a mainstream 6-core processor until after the 6-core Ryzen 5 1600 launched.

      You've still got a great system, the 980 is still good too! You should hold off even longer than what it takes to double performance for $1000, because you'll probably be underwhelmed. You'll go from getting great FPS to getting... great FPS, Even if it's doubled, 100 FPS is still great, even if 200 is better.

    Thanks for the update Steve! I'm still rocking a 3770k @ 4.6 Ghz w/1080 ti and have been back and forth about the upgrade to the 8700k. Glad to see that, in gaming, the difference is marginal. Been interested in in the productivity gains tho, but not enough to pull the trigger since 95% of my PC usage is gaming. Probably will go for the rumored 9700k (8c/16t) or the Zen 2 (Zen +?) version of the 1700 next year tho, if all goes well financially. The extra day-to-day usability and multitasking of more cores/threads is calling to me lol

    4.8GHz out of a 4770k? That's pretty reasonable. Is It delidded? Didn't see many 4770k passing the 4.6GHz mark.

    • @smoke1659
      @smoke1659 6 років тому +3

      That's definetly one of the top Haswells out there. My 4670k doesn't even go over 4,00Ghz (except I bump the voltage by ~0,1 Volt, which is not reasonable at all for a 100Mhz increase), and many other people hit a wall at around 4,00Ghz too.

    • @Computastisch
      @Computastisch 6 років тому +2

      Smoke 165 I can agree absolutely! I got my 4770k to 4.5GHz @1.29V.

    • @RapttorX
      @RapttorX 6 років тому +1

      the 4.8Ghz oc is a bit out of this world (top 1% probably). I cant pass 4.3Ghz @ 1.2V stable with a delided 4770k and noctua nh-d15s. It needs more than 1.3v for 4.4Ghz and thats not worth it.

    •  6 років тому +1

      My 4770k is @4.5Ghz with 1.15v and hits 83C on load (Enermax Liqmax II 240), for 4.6Ghz I would need 1.25v and the temps skyrocket to 95C so I'm leaving it at 4.5Ghz.

  • @Rocky-bz8wr
    @Rocky-bz8wr 6 років тому

    Great review as always thank you Steve.
    Like it was said in the last video it seems that the DDR3 memory even though it is @2400MHz and tight timings seems to be holding the 4770K@4.8GHz back a bit when the game is looking for more bandwidth.
    I play at 60Hz so 60FPS since that is what my Samsung 60" HDTV runs at yes it has the 120Hz motion thingy but that really looks weird. I decided to see what my system was doing while I was gaming so I set up MSi After burner to use Riva Tuner and get all that info on my screen while gaming. I unlocked Vsync and let her rip (tear)..lol
    I was rather surprised that in the games I tested @ 1080p all ran way over 100FPS sometimes into the 200FPS range or more. I only tested the newer games I have all of which came out in 2016-2017. It also gave me a pretty good idea how my system behaved for CPU,GPU load and temps. From my limited testing it basically told me I do not have to upgrade my CPU yet (i7 2700K@5.0GHz was 5.1Ghz but the move upstairs from basement made me a bit uneasy with the temps hitting 83c under stress testing the CPU & a constant 58c-63c in the games with vsync unlocked. I am going to wait for either a better performing Ryzen 2 8/16 CPU or see what Intel can do with their 8/16 CPU in 2018. My video card being a R9 390x 8GB is probably my next hardware to finally be upgraded. I was going to do the Vega upgrade until the reviews came out for those cards. So either will be a Navi card or if ever Nvidia releases Volta to the masses I will go for which ever cards will give me the best bang for the buck.

    I really appreciate you throwing in some medium settings in the 1080p testing. It's nice to see where the CPU limitations are rather than GPU.
    I prefer the higher framerates in games rather than higher graphics quality, so it kinda tells what to expect out of a CPU. I have a 4690k and a 1060 6GB, so I really don't see a realistic point in upgrading unless I wanted a 1080ti and more cores/threads for other applications.
    Either way, thank you for the video. I would definitely appreciate some more 1080p low/medium results for your CPU testing if you find time to do it

    Steve, might it be possible that at this point (4.8 Ghz) the 4770k is held back by the ram? Because platforms that utilize DDR4 seemed to have an easier time for example in Ashes of the Benchmark. For example the 7600k, which only has half the threads the 4770k has, was nearly as fast.

    Within the last fortnight I made this exact transition, upgraded from a 4770k to 8700k with a 1080Ti. You're conclusion is correct for monitor gaming. I'm running a 144mhz monitor and the actual perceivable gaming experience doesn't feel different. However if you're into VR gaming the jump to an 8700k has improved performance noticeably on titles that really push your system. Project Cars 2 is a good example, the 8700k as smoothed out the stutters I had with the 4770k. So depending on your gaming usage, the upgrade isn't quite a mute subject.

    So, with my 4790 *non-K version* running at ~3.7 ghz will my FPS still be pretty comparable to an upgraded CPU if I upgrade my GPU from a 970 to a 1070 or 1070 ti? I don't have the money to upgrade my whole system and I'm looking to be able to run Destiny 2 at highest settings at 1080p as close to 144 fps as I can get. Considering the performance difference between 5.0Ghz and 5.2 Ghz is negligible, you are pushing your CPU a bit much. Downclock to 5.0Ghz with more reasonable voltages and you're good. Maybe 1.425V is indeed ok for 8700k and the CPU won't degrade overtime, but why should you risk it if there is little to be gained?

    Thanks for the review Steve. It can definitely be seen that a lot of effort is involved in making these kinds of benchmarking videos. Though i must say what you said at 12:48 I have to disagree with slightly. I think a fair number of people out there usually don't have an abundance of cash lying about to upgrade everything and maybe can only choose between a CPU+MB+RAM combo or go with a top end card like the 1080ti, a situation that I find myself in. I am really looking forward to the 2600k review as that is what I am currently running right now. My experience with the 2600K was acceptable until very recently, when i noticed in some of the more recent titles, I noticed a fair amount of micro stuttering both at 1080p and 1440p. I am running high speed DDR3 2400 memory downclocked to DDR3 2133 along with a new SSD but the stuttering persists. I know this might be a long shot but is there a chance that you can add 0.1% lows in your testing in order to better showcase stuttering in gameplay? Thanks man! Love your videos! Keep up the great work!

      Why are you even considering the GTX 1080 Ti? This to me makes no sense. Wouldn't the GTX 1070 be a wiser choice?

    • @jameshsu6605
      @jameshsu6605 6 років тому

      It's because I already have the 1070 but after moving to 1440p, it really struggles to keep an even 60 FPS in the more recent more demanding titles at Ultra presets. I agree that it might not be the best solution for me as the micro stuttering would be even further exacerbated with a more powerful GPU such as the 1080ti. Thus i am very much looking forward to your 2600k coverage hoping that you might include the .1% performance numbers or even just some comments on the overall fluidity of the gameplay aspect vs 8700K. I accept that the problem could very well be on my side and an indication of the CPU + MB being on its last legs.

    • @jameshsu6605
      @jameshsu6605 6 років тому

      Regardless of the problems associated with my personal rig, I still feel that my point was valid, that people who are running a Sandy Bridge config with a current gen 1060 or 1070 equivalent might only have the option of either a platform change OR a GPU change but usually not both.

      I got a 2600K at 4.4 Ghz and GTX 1070.
      The GPU is the bottleneck at 1080p so either scale back your resolution or spend $1000+ on new hardware.

    Steve, can you recommend motherboards as well for older Intel chip overclocks with these videos? A lot of people in my area are buying new hardware atm, because they OC-d their 2600K, 3770K, 4770K in the name of "this is just as good as the new this way" and their motherboard died in 2-3weeks (ofc those were not top of the line Z series mobos)
    Please let people know, that just because they have the CPU to overclock, it doesnt mean they have the comlete system to overclock and it can break permanently if not done with care.

    • @LimitIsIllusion
      @LimitIsIllusion 6 років тому

      if a motherboard is made to overclock, it will do it fine. you just need to keep temperatures in check. you arent getting a 4.8 oc on most 4770ks with a cheap air cooler. motherboards that are made to overclock can handle moderate overclocks just fine. the high end boards are made for pushing the limits with strong cooling

      just because a close friend of mine just blew his gigabyte p67-ds3-b3 mobo, with a very shy overclock on a 2600K @4.2ghz didnt even have to change any voltage. It survived 4 hours or prime95 torture at maximum temp of 83 degrees, and a week later mobo kicked the bucket. And right now used z68 mobos are going for 100$+ here because everyone fries their system and looking for used parts for sandy bridge, and ivy bridge.

      Not really no.. The architecture in the 4790K is improved upon, hence why the Haswell Refresh chips launched

    • @RapttorX
      @RapttorX 6 років тому +2

      Haswell Refresh are Haswell binned chips with improved thermal paste and improved VRM. They are the same architecture, same performance clock for clock.

    • @RapttorX
      @RapttorX 6 років тому +2

      @P.J Yes, the "way more electronics" is the improved VRM that i already mentioned. " The Devil's Canyon is by far a superior chip" is an overstatement. If you want a similar comparisson look at AMD RX480 and RX580.

I have a 7700k with a 980ti I get about 20% less fps so i know its my gpu but the cost vs performance numbers with a bottled gpu will make me wait for the next gpu from nvidia. Also me not buying a 1080ti makes the next gpu come faster because I am not buying sale decline if only by a fraction of a percentage. Now if I can just get everyone to not buy 1080s we could have volta next week.
