Rick, please considering covering more punk! It's such a substantial global movement with an indelible mark on music since the 70s. Prog and metal are great, but punk also deserves way more love and recognition from the broader music world. Everything from pop to metal to alternative have been touched by it. And bands ranging from The Cure to The Police are directly shaped by the movement. More punk always welcome!
I never in a million years thought I'd hear these bands --- MY FAVORITE BANDS --- on your channel, Rick. Especially PROPAGANDHI! Chris is such a ripper. And your comment about Lagwagon delighted me. Chris Rest and Chris Flippin play off each other so well. Bad Religion and NOFX have been my favorite bands since the first time I heard "Suffer" and "The Longest Line" many, many moons ago. Strange side note: I recently wore a NOFX shirt to a Phish show and have never gotten so many compliments on an article of clothing in my entire life, hahaha!
The list seems odd... Blink 182 and green day and then Rancid, NOFX, and Bad Religion... And no offspring? Don't get me wrong I love them all but, yeah...
Are the Violent Femmes not here due to there more folk/punk vibe - which they may have invented? Man back in the mid '80 that band was played everywhere in the Midwest. Man those lyrics :)
The 90s when my guitar journey took off in earnest. Played a lot of punk and ska in those days. That Pennywise bass line would always get played by various friends back then. We nearly had a band put together back then. We had two guitarist a bass player and the bass players brother could play drums. The drummer had a regular job at this small guitar company named Paul Reed Smith so he wasn’t around much 😁 Thank you for this walk down memory lane Rick and Chip.

I absolutely loved to see this! The nostalgia was almost overwhelming. I'd love to see an actual "pop punk" list from the 90s. There's a swath of albums that came out from bands heavily influenced by the Ramones in that decade.
And speaking of Aquabats, I'd love to see Rick do a 20 best 3rd wave SKA bands list. Or we can do it here... My top 3: Reel Big Fish Suburban Legends Streetlight Manifesto
Rick didn’t actually say Travis was the drummer for that song, he just said the drummer for this band is currently all over the charts now. Travis is the current drummer for Blink so that validates his statement 🤷🏻♂️
Loved this one. I hope we get other decades for punk AND other regions. This should have had 'North America' in the title. To add a few contenders from Australia: Bodyjar, Frenzal Rhomb, 28 Days & The Living End. All played (and some still play) the Warped Tours and similar shows down here. Frenzal even released stuff on Fat. Then there are a STACK of great 90s Swedish punks bands. I was surprised to see none of them here. So maybe a Euro version would be great: Millencolin, Hellacopters, The Hives, No Fun at All, Peepshows, Refused, International Noise Conspiracy, etc. Burning Heart Records was up there with Fat and Epitaph for me in the 90s.
So much love for Burning Heart! You forgot to mention Randy, who put out some of the best punk rock records ever. And Adhesive and Satanic Surfers, more great swedish bands!
Offsrings "Self Esteem" was a really big deal atleast in Scandinavia in the 90's, so I was a bit suprised it didnt make the cut. That song was also the main reason I got into music & started playing instruments.
Born in the early 80s got my first guitar at 10 on my birthday. These songs were pivotal in my history. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Also, this guy's vocals are killer.
Awesome list and performance! But how is The Offspring not even mentioned? They probably sold more records than 90% of this top 20 combined and had a lot of solid punk rock hits on the mainstream charts.
i thought it was gonna be number 1, but im absolutely shocked it wasn't on the list, i mean Self Esteem is probably number 1, so bizarre of a choice to not include by rick
At 7 so far not a single English punk band. Kinda strange for a genre originating here in the UK. A lot of this is just pop punk... Don't get me wrong Lagwagon and Green Day were some of my favourites when I was like 8 and I was gonna watch Face to Face at a festival today except other great bands dropped out like Days n Daze (too bad they weren't around in the 90s, they would be deserving of a spot for sure). Anyway, no Adicts or The Damned or anything.
Quick recommendation for anyone that happens to read this. 'Ash' is a great underrated 90s Northern Irish pop punk band that didn't seem to crack North America. Check out the songs 'Burn Baby Burn', 'Kung Fu' and 'Cherry Bomb'
Yeah great band back In the day, seen them live in a few festivals and they always sounded great live! Burn baby burn and shining light are particularly good songs 👍
It's amazing how many times i litterally got chills listening to a few of these riffs for the first time in years... Also shocked ruby soho wasn't in here somewhere.
This is the most hyped I've been watching one of these videos in so long. Most of my history in music boiled into a single video. I could even guess the bands based on the quick tidbits before the song. I am so happy, right now.
I only miss something from The Offspring and Millencolin, then I'd have chosen "soulmate" and "ruby Soho" over your picks to make the list, but it's just personal taste matter. Great selection of tracks.
I'm partial to "The Wars End", but really almost any song from "...And Out Come the Wolves" could make the list, one of the best albums of the 90's, or any decade for that matter. 19 songs and none of them is a stinker.
Missed a lot of great bands like Millencolin, No Fun At All, Satanic Surfers, AFI, MxPx, etc.. But still, I love to see some punk rock content in here.! Would love for you to analyze one of NOFX’s more complex songs.. maybe off the Pump Up The Valuum album!
I do agree, AFI was still pretty hardcore compared to the albums he played (during the 90s). IMO they lightened up Art of Drowning and after. Dead on about Millencolin. One my best friend back then took his own life, that was his favorite band.
Man, possibly one of the videos of yours that I've enjoyed the most by far, I mean you guys basically just nailed many of my favorite songs from many of my favorites from 90's skatepunk.
FACE TO FACE RULE!!!! NICE to see them get the recognition they deserve - talk about perfect albums!!!-- They're S/T is a pop punk masterpiece!! 😉 Nice to see Rick cracking up too.....
I"m from the Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minutemen, Fugazi, Iggy Pop, Ruts, etc. era. Although many of the bands here escaped my notice I'm happy to see another generation has its punk! Hey, the crowd, the noise, the sweat and sincerity is the same! Good stuff whether you like it or not. Keep up the good work Rick. Nice job Chip!
I'm 41 and recently made it to a Wilhelm Scream show, a band that was deffinately a bit after my time... great band, great to see that blood, sweat, and brotherhood still survives in a dive bar somewhere... just waiting for kids to once again find everything that is missing from comercial rock.
Rancid kicks so much ass. ...and out come the wolves is amazing, but imo Rancid 5 and Life Won't Wait are their best albums. Rancid 5 is my favorite. There is something about pissed off Rancid that I love.
@@grigorygudenov Those three are definitely their best. I always say Life Won't Wait is my favorite album ever, even though I think ...And Out Come the Wolves is "better" (if that makes sense). It's insane that one band could release three such remarkably different albums in a row and have them all be nearly flawless front-to-back.
Great list! So many great punk bands in the 90's that really started to play there instruments well and put a lot of effort into the writing. Glad to see some on the list. Another great video!
Kudos for going with Roots Radical instead of the heavy-radio-rotation Ruby Soho. Two killer songs you overlooked: Pretend We're Dead - L7 Repeater - Fugazi I'm surprised you didn't put anything by The Offspring. SMASH came out the same time as Dookie, and if it wasn't "Basket Case" or "Longview" playing wherever you went, you heard "Come Out And Play" or "Self Esteem".
To me L7 was more of a grunge/metal band and Fugazi is more post-punk. I definitely agree that offspring should have been included. Never a huge fan, but to leave them off a 90s pop punk list is odd.
@@joshgruenbaum9379 I'd agree with those subgenres. I was thinking more under the big umbrella of punk. I guess that's why the video is focused on Pop punk. Lol

You can tell these Top 20 songs where you played with other artists were incredible fun to film and put together. This and all of them are great. Congrats.
Impressed with the jawbreaker and lagwagon love. But most happy with the descendents love, would have been upset if they weren't on it. I would love for Rick to look into the insanity that is the their melodic structure across their albums. They modulate all over the place.
Musically I'm not that moved by this music, but the simplicity, makes me feel I get closer to the artists. Very unfiltered feelings. I guess that's one of the differences from regular punk, that it's not even "filtered" by the need to provoke and cause chaos.
The black album is one of my favorite albums of all time. i can listen to it start to finish over and over. Their subsequent albums, unfortunately weren't nearly as good. :-(
Wow, as a guy who grew up listening to these bands in the 90's (and 00's), it was fun to see one of my favourite youtubers revisit these songs - I never would have guessed that you knew Lagwagon (one of my favourite bands). Also, the other guy's singing is great, he even tries to imitate the singing styles of the original singers, which went especially great with the Bouncing Souls and Green Day. Rick Beato, you never cease to amaze me with your channel!
MxPx's albums Life In General and Slowly Going The Way of The Buffalo were bangers. I feel Blink 182 should have been higher on the list too. It's a great list with awesome bands though!
MxPx will always be my favorite- I could get away with listening to them and a few others because I could buy their albums at the Christian bookstores. For my hyper religious Mom, that was all that mattered!
NOFX and Descendents on top. Good choices. For me personally, Hot Water Music was very important to me during the late 90s because I was living in Gainesville at the time and they ruled the local scene.

You had me at "90's punk". One of the things that made The Vandals stand out was Warren Fitzgerald's crazy, frantic lead guitar work and Joe Escalante's great bass lines. 'Failure is the Best Revenge' off The Quickening is a good example of how they mix up power chords and more complex riffs. They'd be a good band to analyse because they've had a lot of variety in their songs over the decades (not including their early cowpunk work).
Great call. I LOVE the Vandals. It was awesome to see one of their songs here and one I love too. Have caught them live several times and they are crazy. Every time they come to Australia, they have a new wacky Aussie cover for us. Last time it was 'I'm an Individual'. I mean, how the Hell have they even heard of that? :D
This video pretty much summed up my teenage years. NOFX is the only band I have tattooed on my body. I was a Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph addict. I loved that you focused so much on skater punk and So Cal.

Amazing list. I couldn’t agree more with the choices. The only band I think was left out was the offspring. They did have the number one selling independent album of all time on epitaph records. I love that nofx was #1. My favourite band. Punk in drublic is the reason I got into punk rock. Great job Rick!!!
There was great punk rock outside of California in the 90s. New Bomb Turks - Cryin Into the Beer of a Drunk Man (Columbus, OH) Shelter - Here We Go (NYC) Hagfish - Gertrude (TX) The Living End - Prisoner of Society (Australia) Gaunt - 97th Tear (Columbus, OH) Supersuckers - Seventeen Poles (Tucson, AZ) The Suicide Machines - SOS (Detroit, MI) Buzzcocks - Isolation (UK) 30 Amp Fuse - Tonight (Knoxville, TN) Les Thugs - Dreamer's Song (France) Jawbox - Tools and Chrome (Washington DC) as a few examples
Linoleum has been one of my all time favorite songs since I was a small child. Punk in Drublic had a huge impact on my adolescence and possibly changed my life forever! Great episode and great list. Love the playing too. Only critical omissions are Alkaline Trio with Cringe or Nose over Tail. Also sorta surprised not to see Fugazi
I totally agree about Alkaline Trio (especially their early stuff), but Fugazi wouldn't really make it onto a "pop punk" music list. They should be on a "best band ever" list.
I'll never get the hate for 'Dear You'. Idk if people's problem had more to do with it being on a major label or the music itself, but it's almost a perfect album imo. Even the songs I didn't initially like, like 'Jet Black', grew on me to where I loved them as much as the others.
Where are the ladies? Gits - Daily Bread Betty Blowtorch - Love / Hate Cramps - Hard Working Man Interrupters Distillers (that band that had songs written by Kurt Cobain because he was married to their lead singer)

Amazing to have Lagwagon, Strung Out, Bouncing Souls, Face to Face, Screeching Weasel, Propagandhi and NUFAN in this list. These bands are recognized worldwide and it feels good to have Rick including them. Probably we would include Bodyjar (AU), HiStandard (JP), The Offspring (US) and The Queers (US), but it was a Top20 anyways.
Yeah i was totally surprised to
Great seeing Descendents on here. Would love a 'what makes this song great' about one of theirs, especially if you can get the isolated tracks!
Ya, Karl's Back ground chain vocals really shine on that one.

Man, I've gotten over much of the 90's punk but Linoleum gets me every time! The energy of that track is insane!
Jim is so talented and that voice is a fucking Swiss army knife for 90s punk. Great video.
Rick looks like he really had a lot of fun on this one. And I never though a southern accent could come across like that. love this video. More please
Agreed, this one is by far the funnest top x countdown I've seen from him.
YES MORE!!!!!
Hell yeah NOFX!!!! There are so many classics by them such as "Don't call me white", " I'm an alcoholic" etc.
No Offspring? Kind of shocking.
I agree! If we're calling Green Day "punk", then The Offspring should have been included on this list.
@@BaldyofCamino Very true
The list seems odd... Blink 182 and green day and then Rancid, NOFX, and Bad Religion... And no offspring? Don't get me wrong I love them all but, yeah...
Are the Violent Femmes not here due to there more folk/punk vibe - which they may have invented? Man back in the mid '80 that band was played everywhere in the Midwest. Man those lyrics :)
offspring is kind of a rip of agent orange imo
The 90s when my guitar journey took off in earnest. Played a lot of punk and ska in those days.
That Pennywise bass line would always get played by various friends back then.
We nearly had a band put together back then. We had two guitarist a bass player and the bass players brother could play drums. The drummer had a regular job at this small guitar company named Paul Reed Smith so he wasn’t around much 😁
Thank you for this walk down memory lane Rick and Chip.
Me too. I got by playing not real power cords using two fingers.... That screwed me up I think a little

I can’t believe they didn’t include any Offspring :(
Amazing list! All classic punk songs, only one I was hoping to see and didn't was AFI, they were always one of my absolute favorites!
I absolutely loved to see this! The nostalgia was almost overwhelming. I'd love to see an actual "pop punk" list from the 90s. There's a swath of albums that came out from bands heavily influenced by the Ramones in that decade.
Travis didn’t play on Dude Ranch. He was still in the Aquabats.
Exactly!
Came here to say this, or like the comment that beat me to it.
I didn't see this before I commented the same thing.
And speaking of Aquabats, I'd love to see Rick do a 20 best 3rd wave SKA bands list. Or we can do it here...
My top 3:
Reel Big Fish
Suburban Legends
Streetlight Manifesto
Couldn't agree more.
I was hoping somebody else would bring up The Living End! Those dudes absolutely rule. Criminally underrated here in the US.

I was surprised too, and Self Esteem is one of my favourite songs, and the whole "Smash" album is great.
That album kept Epitaph's lights on for years.
i thought it was gonna be number 1, but im absolutely shocked it wasn't on the list, i mean Self Esteem is probably number 1, so bizarre of a choice to not include by rick
I'm sure he was just trolling for extra comments by leaving them out. :P
Anyway, no Adicts or The Damned or anything.
never thought I would see Rick Beato playing Disconnected by Face To Face, that's so cool
Agreed
Offspring - Nitro (Youth Energy)
Also, 'Welcome to Paradise' would've been the better Green Day choice
Nitro isn't pop-punk.
I’m so glad you have NOFX #1! I have every single album, cd and a few cassette tapes of NOFX’s music! My all time favorite punk band!!
Oxymoronic!
Quick recommendation for anyone that happens to read this. 'Ash' is a great underrated 90s Northern Irish pop punk band that didn't seem to crack North America. Check out the songs 'Burn Baby Burn', 'Kung Fu' and 'Cherry Bomb'

'Ruby Soho' my favourite too :) I have the CD single for that. :)

Millencolin really hit their straps in the 2000s though. I know they were around in the 90s but not very big. AFI were absolutely not pop-punk.
Man, possibly one of the videos of yours that I've enjoyed the most by far, I mean you guys basically just nailed many of my favorite songs from many of my favorites from 90's skatepunk.

I love The Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So. Rancid ...and out come the wolves is front to back one if the best punk albums of any decade.
I would argue it's the best punk album of any decade.
There are definitely some days though where you just need that Rancid 5 sound. It's insane that one band could release three such remarkably different albums in a row and have them all be nearly flawless front-to-back.

Kudos for going with Roots Radical instead of the heavy-radio-rotation Ruby Soho. Two killer songs you overlooked:
Pretend We're Dead - L7
Repeater - Fugazi
I'm surprised you didn't put anything by The Offspring. SMASH came out the same time as Dookie, and if it wasn't "Basket Case" or "Longview" playing wherever you went, you heard "Come Out And Play" or "Self Esteem".

Impressed with the jawbreaker and lagwagon love. But most happy with the descendents love, would have been upset if they weren't on it. I would love for Rick to look into the insanity that is the their melodic structure across their albums. They modulate all over the place.

Kidding, but one on like 20 other Descendants or All songs would be great.
Oooh yes. The Descendents (and All) were and are top-tier writers and players. Friendly guys, too.
Musically I'm not that moved by this music, but the simplicity, makes me feel I get closer to the artists. Very unfiltered feelings. I guess that's one of the differences from regular punk, that it's not even "filtered" by the need to provoke and cause chaos.

I'm so glad someone brought this up - I was shocked when they revealed the #1 song and realized there was no Offspring on their entire list.
