You remind me of an old cabinet maker/ carpenter in my youth who taught me how to use an inside reading folding rule. A nice little trick you just taught us. I thank you sir.
Thanks for the great tip. I always appreciate the willingness of trades to share their secrets. Now that I'm older and travel with my tools often, I like how light weight and compact it is.
Elizabeth L.Johnson said, Oh, I've got to make one for my husband. He's always needing something to write on at the job site. I find blocks of wood with notes on them in the front seat of his truck, or walls(bare sheet rock, sometimes on studs) with phone numbers, etc. written in pencil. Your square is so much more useful, too!!! Great video! I understood your explanations very well.
You can get a reasonably priced piece of 1/8" PVC plastic sheet at Amazon (affiliate link in description above). It will be glossy when new. I recommend that you give the gloss some "etch" with the finest sandpaper you have. That will make it easier to write on. The MEDIUM (green) Sandflex sanding block is also ideal for initial etching of the surface, as well as "erasing" the pencil marks.

real lead pencils are not actually the element lead. what you probably mean is soft graphite, like a 2b or softer, as used in woodworking. "office" pencils are usually HB, for making sharp marks on paper.
Great tool! Many times a square fixed or sliding gets in the way. This is very nice. Out of stock for now. Thanks Subscribed! I will be checking out your other Videos too!
Some great tips, Herrick. Over here in the UK I could not find white PVC board but they do have white acrylic sheet which is similar I think. Would that do?
Hmmm. I don’t think a pencil will write on acrylic. If it doesn’t, you could apply 2” wide masking tape on the acrylic and write on that. Remove the tape when you want to make a clean new taped surface. 🤔👍
Isn't that just a number 2 pencil? I don't believe lead has been used in pencils for many decades. I think they are referred to as leads in drafting but in actuality, it's just graphite. I am aware that drafting pencils come in many different hardnesses, but a number 2 is the most common because of its softness and ease of writing.
I came to the comments section to ask what you meant "real lead" and see that the question has already been asked more than once but not answered. PLEASE TELL US WHETHER YOU MEAN LEAD LIKE I A BULLET OR GRAPHITE OR SOMETHING ELSE.
If you watched the whole thing...he was leaving room for the "horns" and rest of trim casing He had more layout to do on the outside of both of those marks
Brilliant!!!
WHY didn't I ever think of that? You earned my subscription, thanks, Herrick............
You show so many common sense ideas in your videos!! Love watching and learning from you!

You are a very interesting guy. Haven't seen your work, but I'd wager you are an outstanding carpenter

@@JamesJohnson-yh1oh 300 grit will do it.
Brilliant. I used to do the same but with a throw away piece of luan or 1/8" marine. :)

What did you use to cut it? Whenever I cut plastic the cut is jagged and rough. How did you get such a nice clean straight cut? Thanks in advance!
Great idea and tip. Where to get the pvc and how do you cut it accurately
Nice.. good tip! Thanks

I am confused on "real" lead. Plumbum or regular graphite?
Have you considered gluing a PVC strip (1/2"x5" maybe) to one edge as a reference edge for square? It would reinforce the hanger hole too.
OMG, vintage pencil from a yard sale! You know you can resell that vintage pencil at the hipster emporium for, like, $20!
Great tip!!

lol real LEAD or real graphite/carbon?

underwhelmed, But good on ya for making videos
Another square in the shape of not a square….
Uh, no, don't mark both ends. Mark one and cut, then mark the other and cut.Otherwise great video.
