I'm a classic rock/R&B Funk guy...half Asian/Half mexican...who's married to a white chick from the midwest who loves country music. In 1992 we went to a wedding where my wife was the only white person there. We approached the DJ and asked if he had this song. He was surprised we asked, and said "hell yeah. Wanna hear it?" My wife and I said "Sure--let's open up some eyes & ears." When the song came on, my wife and I were the only ones on the dance floor for the first 30-seconds. But the EVERYONE started flocking to the floor (Mexican-Americans, Filipino-Americans)...and had a GREAT time dancing to this.

Thanks to one of my dearly departed friends who loved this song, it kind of "rubbed off" on me and became yet another of a choice few Vince Gill songs that I can call one of my favorites. Now I always think of her when I hear this!! I miss you so much Mary Lee! Hope you can hear this in Heaven!! 😪
Back in 1985 Vince came to the Sunrise Beach Florida swap meet. There was a two story building there where every Sunday they featured a different band. One of the artists there was Vince Gill. I was 3rd row back, center stage. At the end of his 4th song he told the audience that there was a guy in the crowd that was singing word for word with him. That was me. The lady to my right shouted out " and he sings good too ". Vince asked her if I was good enough to come up on stage and she replied " oh most definitely". He asked me if I wanted to join him on stage. We did 3 songs together. At the end of the 3rd song Vince says " I gotta send him back to the audience or he'll steal my show today and I'll wind up doing nothing but play guitar ". Never will forget that day.

I can't believe I'm just discovering him as a guitar player. I grew up listening to him, and grew up playing guitar... I just never realized it was HIM playing all those solos. The solo on this song isn't that hard to learn note for note. Playing it as smoothly and with as much character as he does, different story. So good.
I'm not that into CW music (classic rock/70's funk guy). But my wife is a HUGE CW fan--and a big fan of Vince Gill. I have become a big fan. He's got a great voice...but MAN...can this guy play the guitar!

My wife is a huge Vince Gill fan. She introduced me to his music by playing "Go Rest High On That Mountain" and a lot of his other slow stuff (which she loves.) For a long time I thought VG was just a really good ballad guy. But then a few years ago I saw this video on the right side of my UA-cam page. I clicked on it, thinking it was going to be another good ballad. I love this song...as well as a lot of is other up-tempo stuff. You can now count me as a new and huge VG fan.

Vince Gill did Claptons "Crossroads" festival a few years back, and they had an all-star cast on a few of the songs. It occurred to me during "Lay Down Sally" that Vince can EASILY outplay all these guys up there without even trying, he really is a world class picker. But he kept it classy and played mostly rhythm.
Vince Gill is like the Ric Flair of Country Music: he wasn't always the top star in the business, but he still a valuable asset to making the business look good.
He is the best there ever was

So ironic that you mention listening to it on the radio. I remember a trip to visit the in-laws in West Virginia in 1991. It was then that I learned it was Vince singing this classic. Heard it several times while visiting also. Instant favorite for me :)

Dig a little deeper. There is good country made in last ten years. It is ok to like certain eras especially but there is still good stuff out there. Hell, even the men got onboard ( for a few years most of the good stuff was female led) like Tyler and Sturgeon and Turnpike Troubadors. I did crack up seeing Judd's included in ' old' country but then I thought it kinda is by now
All 90's music was better as a whole. Right around the millennium flip, the music business turned into a supply chain. The music companies don't care about the music being art anymore. It's all about sales. I am not a country fan. Not by far. BUT, I was always a Vince Gill fan! I remember hearing "I still believe in you" for the first time as a kid. I only listened to rap and rock at that point. I was so amazed by his voice! Very unique! And now that I am aged a few decades, I can really appreciate Vince's work even more now.

Just enjoy the song and who sings it! I had never been interested in Country Music until I happened to hear 'Go Rest High' and 'When I call your name'.on radio. Since then I have become a huge fan of Vince and have been researching everything about him. The deeper I research the more I love everything about him.
