Jay Doubleyou Woah, where did you hear about incest porn? That's a big allegation to be throwing around as second hand gossip. You gotta give me more than just "so I heard" also, music sketches? Like ... innnn the porn? What? That aside, I hear all the complaints "fans think they're intellectual, shout pickle Rick and Oh the mcdonalds thing!" And I'm like ... so? They're doofuses, who cares? They don't represent an entire fandom. If they did, well, there's a looooot of rick & morty fans so by that logic this country should already be set on fire while screams of agony get drowned out to a bunch of "wubbalubbadubdubb". And that McDonald's thing was a mess on so many levels.
Jay Doubleyou You won't google something you hold as a reason to hate something? Also, you still didn't explain what the music stuff is. Also also, saying a minority of a fanbase is toxic does Not mean the fan base as a whole is toxic. That's just not how math works.
He used to write about it a lot on the old Channel 101 forums. Someone transcribed some of Dan's comments to a Wiki here: channel101.wikia.com/wiki/Story_Structure_105:_How_TV_is_Different But it's missing the rest of the comments where they talk in depth about Campbell and other writers.
Dan Harmon wasn't always a fucking hack. He used to hide his hackiness until the internet came along and revealed everything! fuck knowledge! god bless ignorance ~ Idiots 2017
More than creative "balance" I'd call it something like creative tug-of-war or maybe even creative restrain. I have the feeling that Dan Harmon's most difficult job is trying to find the right balance between restraining Justin Roiland and letting "creativity" run free. I believe that if Dan wouldn't control Justin the series would devolve into 25 minutes of testicles, gore and deformities with some story elements occasionally sprinkled around. Something similar to Justin's Back to the Future "parody"
The two moments were the creators are talking, overlapping the sequences playing behind, are almost unintelligible to a non-english speaker like myself. Too much background noise, couldn't understand anything.
Easily one of the most exciting shows on television, without that balance between chaos and order the show would be lost, I'm just grateful that they've really gotten a grasp on that balance, three seasons in and the show is better than ever. Great video! EDIT: What the fuck is going on in these comments? XD
Film Radar Ha. Thanks dude. I have no clue. I thought people liked the show but it sounds like everyone despises the show, the fan base, and life in general. Man... :/
Redbad of Frisia Sometimes it pays to avoid the poison. I don’t know how some people are able to enjoy anything. Too cynical. No need to crap over every single thing.
I feel like I had a different experience when I started watching the show because I was unaware of it and the fan base so I was able to form my own opinions. When something tends to be popular and someone does not enjoy it they tend to despise it more than they would if they weren’t exposed to it from such a large and loud fan base
This is exactly why it's so hard for me to form my opinions and thoughts about a given franchise. If people continuously talk about how great something is, then there is essentially no point in watching it because you already know how it is... based on the fans.
Before The Credits It's been a while since I went back and watched some Community, but I don't recall really hating season 4 as much as everyone else did. Felt the same to me, twas season 5 I wasn't a big fan of.
Rick and morty is like some positive future saying “look at these accurate points portrayed in barbaric tones” it’s accurate to achieve multidimensional action but living in a slow world this is the best we got . A cartoon . I’m thankful
Harmon didn't invent story structure. I like the guy but good lord the circle jerking over her story circle is ridiculous. It's not groundbreaking to anyone that knows anything about the history of literature. Character goes out to get or do something, struggles, succeeds, is better from the experience. That's literally the most basic aspect of nearly any story and has been forever.
Because it’s so basic, it’s easy to shape it into the way a writer would want, making it easy to understand. Make it too complicated and it would only make the story a mess
They mention community in the episode with Rick and his girlfriend Unity when they were watching tv. Rick kept telling Unity to do stuff to the show they were watching and when they show the screen it's community. Then I realized what Rick told Unity to do to the show is what happened in real life to Community! Lol
One of the few highly rated shows I've watched but not really been able to enjoy. Maybe you can help me give the show a second chance. Edit: Nope. The whole storyline section can be applied most cartoons. Especially the A and B plot part.
Interesting that the only episode I quit watching was rixty minutes. The improvisation went on too long and I lost interest in where it was going. Never done that in any episode of any show before! For the record rick and morty is one of the best shows ever but that episode lost me.
I think this is the reason I was disappointed with season 3. I feel like the scale was tipped to the Harmon side of "serious" stories, and without the Roilandian nonsense to balance it out just felt pretentious.
I thought this video was absolutely fantastic. In the sea of "top 10 lists" and countless easter egg youtube clips this one has been a real stand out. Definitely hope you make more and a little sad this awesome and concise analysis only as 25k views when its really good. Thanks - Bb
The show has to end before it goes to complete shit. Considering the fanbase, it may well already have. The creators seem very insightful on the topic of story, and I can't help but feel bad that the fanbase are a bunch of obnoxious, arrogant assholes who think they're better than everyone else. They say that the show is 'fundamental to understanding modern society,' but they also say that you have to know everything to even understand the show. Which is it? You can have one, but not both!
Rick and Morty is a great show mainly because it's fresh and tries something new. So far I don't have to complain, I'm loving it, but let it enter South Park territory and then we'll start talking about how it stayed great or spiraled down to Oblivion like The Simpsons.
Fair enough! I would categorize my top 5 lists. I.e Best tv dramas, best British sitcoms, best animated comedies etc (After all how can you compare the simpsons to game of thrones?). So my top 5 animated sitcoms: 1. Simpsons 2. Rick and Morty 3. South Park Then to a much lesser extent 4. American Dad 5. Family guy Though it's hard to argue rick and morty is one of the best shows ever made, I'd say it's one of the best in it's genre. I'm intrigued by your list though... will look into them.
ThisIs ReadyMade To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
Thanks! My favorite episode is probably Season 3's Rixlantis Mixup. The story with the citadel full of only Rick and Morty's was brilliant. That should've been a movie. And unfortunately the theater decided to change the film from Evil Dead to Poltergeist. :( I love Poltergeist but I'd just seen it recently so we didn't go. I still need to see Evil Dead!
Harmon's cycle is the Cosmogonic cycle first described by Joseph Campbell in The Hero With a Thousand Faces in 1949. It is the standard form of myth and story throughout human history. It predates Harmon by many millennia. It's used in The Bible, The Upanishads, Greek Myths, folklore, and literature. You'll find it in Harry Potter, The Lord of The Rings, and even in comedies like Tootsie and Animal House. Harmon is no innovator in this sense.
Everyone modifies it for time constraints or story needs. No one uses it straight out of the box. Some stories have 150 story points, some 20, some 8. It just depends on the needs and the length. I'm just saying, it's not original.
The circle style story is the most fundamental and profound structure of the human experience. Is basically the "Hero mythos" a descent to chaos to learn something new and the return to order to share the acquired knowledge.
I love the stuff they do on this show, but I can’t deal with the hyperactive dialogue of Rick. It makes me wanna hyperventilate. It’s too bad too, cuz everything they do & give homages to, is right up my alley.
It resonates with my perspective. It reflects ridiculous, nonsensical & cruel world so well & make a big butt joke out of it. Just what I need. If I cant make sense of the world, might as well make fun of it.
I'm just going to come out and say it... I don't like this show all that much. Its decent, but its far too _mean-spirited_ and the characters too unlikable to ever be the 'godsend' the Internet casual magpies have currently latched onto, in a vain attempt to associate themselves with the 'perceived-hip and cool' crowds.
Holy crap, that's an awful audio commentary. They needed to lower the volume on the episode or raise their volume because it's so hard to understand them when they are speaking. It also doesn't help that half the voices in the show are the crew, and everyone was talking over one another. I think I heard six voices all talking and I wasn't sure which one I was supposed to listen to. Or maybe that was the whole point, just 23 minutes of confusion just because they could.
Sorry, ETE, this was a disappointing essay in comparison to your others. Literally, this video could have been done about any television series and is definitely your most objective project. Rick & Morty haters (like me) are annoyed with the amount of obsession and fixation (like this video) on a show that just isn't that special. Like others have said, shows like Futurama, Dr. Who, and Star Trek all used the exact same science fiction tropes and gained a reputation in their dedicated fanbases, while this show became mainstream because of its easily digested content. Rick & Morty is stripped to A.D.D levels of joke delivery speed and a lot of fans have mistaken "random" for "creative" when it comes to the writing/improvization on the show.
He listened in creative writing shop!!! 3:09 is not an original format, nuclear facepalm, nothing original only a satirical Doc and Marty in predictable scenes appealing to the pop counter cultures. Like GoT, i'll skip this fad.
To everyone about to post a 'My IQ isn't high enough' comment, everyone else has already done it. And it wasn't even funny when they did it. Stop. Seriously tho Rick and Morty is a great show (first 2 seasons anyway) with inventive concepts, fun characters, clever humour and some genuinely emotionally resonant moments. Just a shame that the internet has to make an unfunny meme out of everything.
I have mixed feelings for this show. The writing is brilliant, as explained in this video. But the character designs and art style are really... plain and visually unappealing. The characters are mostly 2 dimensional and with no redeemable qualities. I watch and enjoy the show, but I definitely do not "love" it.
1st season was awesome and I would have been happy if it would have been just 1 season of Rick and Morty. 2nd season was good, not as good as the 1st but good. Show kinda lost it's edge there. Still, I would have been kinda satisfied with the 2nd seasons ending. Third season was a fucking turd!
Entertain The Elk Thanks for the reply! I will admit that The Ricklantis Mixup and the pilot were good. The Ricklantis Mixup might actually be one of the top 3 Rick&Morty episodes. Aside from those, the season was just garbage that didn't feel like Rick&Morty. It felt like there was some kind of message behind all of it and there shouldn't be. You don't throw random testical monsters, out of nowhere, to someone's face to be political. It's either total chaos, or it's making a stand and seeing what Dan Harmon is, I think I have an idea where it comes from.
Guys, learn to ignore the internet memes and appreciate the show. As much of a joke as it's fanbase has become, people seem to be forgetting that the show actually is really good.
Finally, a recent video about Rick & Morty that isn't bitching about how "toxic" its fan base is.
Although they are...
Ti My How so? I legitimately wanna know. Most if not all fanbases are cringy and annoying. What makes R&M fans more than awful?
Jay Doubleyou Woah, where did you hear about incest porn? That's a big allegation to be throwing around as second hand gossip. You gotta give me more than just "so I heard" also, music sketches? Like ... innnn the porn? What?

And that McDonald's thing was a mess on so many levels.
BuddhaBot RaM incest porn actually exists, maybe you should see those videos about rams toxic fan base first.
Proof - You don’t wanna know....
Jay Doubleyou You won't google something you hold as a reason to hate something? Also, you still didn't explain what the music stuff is. Also also, saying a minority of a fanbase is toxic does Not mean the fan base as a whole is toxic. That's just not how math works.
around 5:24 we are watching footage about someone watching footage about someones else watching footage of a show. lol.
You realize that Harmon's "story circle" is really Joseph Campbell's Hero's journey right?
They are similar, but not exactly the same. Harmon took that story idea and adapted to work better for TV.
Dan Harmon wasn't always a fucking hack. Channel Z was actually pretty damn brilliant before UA-cam came along and fucked everything up.
yup!
He used to write about it a lot on the old Channel 101 forums.
Someone transcribed some of Dan's comments to a Wiki here:
channel101.wikia.com/wiki/Story_Structure_105:_How_TV_is_Different
But it's missing the rest of the comments where they talk in depth about Campbell and other writers.

Yeah totally agree. If Dan Harmon wasn't there to structure the plot lines and keep Roiland on track, it would all just be meaningless madness.
Kinda like going from The Mighty Boosh to Luxury Comedy. Long story short, thankfully we have people like Dan Harmon and Julian Barratt in the world.
The two moments were the creators are talking, overlapping the sequences playing behind, are almost unintelligible to a non-english speaker like myself. Too much background noise, couldn't understand anything.
ZombieOnUSB Agreed. The commentary track isn’t mixed well. They have the background way too loud for some reason.
what really bothers me is, that the channel is named "Entertain the Elk" but those aren't an elks antlers but those of a deer
kinda Lucky Luke Does it keep you up at night?
oh boy you have no idea
Are you entertained? :)
abloogywoogywoo wow
Elk is a type of deer
Easily one of the most exciting shows on television, without that balance between chaos and order the show would be lost, I'm just grateful that they've really gotten a grasp on that balance, three seasons in and the show is better than ever. Great video!

Well, didn’t know this was a thing - knowyourmeme.com/memes/to-be-fair-you-have-to-have-a-very-high-iq-to-understand-rick-and-morty
Entertain The Elk god i wish i had the luxury to not know that copypasta. It has haunted almost every step of my internet life for the longest time.
Redbad of Frisia Sometimes it pays to avoid the poison. I don’t know how some people are able to enjoy anything. Too cynical. No need to crap over every single thing.
"Easily one of the most exciting shows on television" well that explains why I stopped watching TV...
"I see demons!" slays me every time I hear it.
Your reviews as another type of art!
South Park has done episodes with only A stories.
How can you be sure that it wasn't only B stories?
Andre Jaeckle
🐝
Rick and Morty is better than South Park.
and Seth machfarlen shows
I feel like I had a different experience when I started watching the show because I was unaware of it and the fan base so I was able to form my own opinions. Community Season 4 is a great example that show what Dan brings to TV shows as a showrunner. Without him the series just wasn't the same.
Totally agree.
Before The Credits It's been a while since I went back and watched some Community, but I don't recall really hating season 4 as much as everyone else did. Felt the same to me, twas season 5 I wasn't a big fan of.
IMO Season 5 & 6 were much worse. The show just got worse and worse after Season 3
Before The Credits the series was shitty to begin with though
Rick and morty is like some positive future saying “look at these accurate points portrayed in barbaric tones” it’s accurate to achieve multidimensional action but living in a slow world this is the best we got . A cartoon . I’m thankful
The way they design story structure reminded me of how Trey Parker writes story. They both have their own approach and it works out beautifully
Great point! I might need to do a South Park essay about that. :)
at first I thought this was an obvious Episode to use but you brought up very potent points!
Great! Glad you enjoyed it.
This was really well done, thank you.
GOODBYEEEEEEEEE MOON MAN
I almost included that song in the essay. :)
Great song ,great show and great essay!
NotAtAll Thank you!
Grimly......will we ever witness an ETE episode titled:- "The day Rick and Morty died" ?
Harmon didn't invent story structure. I like the guy but good lord the circle jerking over her story circle is ridiculous. It's not groundbreaking to anyone that knows anything about the history of literature. Character goes out to get or do something, struggles, succeeds, is better from the experience. Complicated themes such as human transfiguration? What?
To be fair you need a very high IQ to understand "I TERNED MAISEALF INTOE A PICKAL MOURTY! I AM PICKAL RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK"
So....Story Circle is a more simplified version of the Hero's Journey?
Yeah I think so. I reworked version.
One of the few highly rated shows I've watched but not really been able to enjoy. Maybe you can help me give the show a second chance.
Edit: Nope. The whole storyline section can be applied most cartoons. Especially the A and B plot part.
Andrew Boot Totally. I wasn’t saying that’s unique to RaM. Just saying that an insane show like RaM still has structure and plot points.
Ah, I see now. I misinterpreted it thinking you were suggesting it was unique. Nice video though!
Interesting that the only episode I quit watching was rixty minutes. The improvisation went on too long and I lost interest in where it was going. Never done that in any episode of any show before! For the record rick and morty is one of the best shows ever but that episode lost me.
Yup, Rixty Minutes is their shittiest episode imo, followed closely by season 2's version of Rixty Minutes ("Interdimensional Cable 2")
I don't care at all for the "A" story in Rixty Minutes, but I've always found the B story very poignant.
I think this is the reason I was disappointed with season 3. I feel like the scale was tipped to the Harmon side of "serious" stories, and without the Roilandian nonsense to balance it out just felt pretentious.
Dan "rape every female writer with my hardon" Harmon

arenkai it's a shitty show
Exactly
I love the show but people need to back off. It’s good, but it’s not the best show ever made!
ThisIs ReadyMade out of interest could you name your favourite show ever or even a top 5?
1. Gravity Falls
2. The Simpsons (preferably the old seasons)
3. Osomatsu-san
4. Space Ghost Coast To Coast
5. Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Fair enough! I would categorize my top 5 lists. I.e Best tv dramas, best British sitcoms, best animated comedies etc (After all how can you compare the simpsons to game of thrones?).
So my top 5 animated sitcoms:
1. Simpsons
2. Rick and Morty
3. South Park
Then to a much lesser extent
4. American Dad
5. Family guy
Though it's hard to argue rick and morty is one of the best shows ever made, I'd say it's one of the best in it's genre.
I'm intrigued by your list though... will look into them.
ThisIs ReadyMade Gravity Falls was so fucking good
ThisIs ReadyMade To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. Great video! You, sir, got one more subscribed.
Glad to have you on board!
Thanks again for another great video! What's your favourite episode and what did you think of the evil dead?
Sorry to hear Great choice!
The only things more annoying than a Rick and Morty fan are the people that keep complaining about Rick and Morty fans.
I don't remember this vid
3:20 when you leave the couch to get a slice of pizza
Entertain The Elk,
I would absolutely LOVE to see you do a video on Xavier: Renegade Angel
Adding it to the list! :)
This episode made me wonder if the creators of this show ever played GTA5. You know, watching the TV...
Damn, never realised how much Dan Harmon looks like Trey Parker before this!
True. But Harmon took the structure and modified it for television.

The circle style story is the most fundamental and profound structure of the human experience. Is basically the "Hero mythos" a descent to chaos to learn something new and the return to order to share the acquired knowledge.
Don't let annoying fans ruin a good show for you. Rick and Morty is fantastic but I am concerned about the direction of the show after season 3.
Seriously, Dan Harman doesn't get the credit for this storytelling model, Joseph Cambell's hero's journey is the actual source.
Rick and Morty is going to become a pop culture phenomenon in 2020
It already is
This was a really nice video.
Thanks!
You deserve more subs and views. Thanks for replying also

Failed Abortion Oh man. If only! Hopefully in the future I can get to one a week!
Entertain The Elk I'll start praying to all the gods
Wait, Dan Harmon is seriously trying to take credit for the Hero’s Journey archetype? Wtf?
Is it nerdwriter1's second channel? Look and sound almost the same...
I'll take that as a compliment.
#FromFD thanks you for video!
:)
Holy crap, that's an awful audio commentary. They needed to lower the volume on the episode or raise their volume because it's so hard to understand them when they are speaking. Yeah but the fanbase is cancer.
T -800 so is the show
Waba laba dub dub
I did enjoy the show but now I don't even know if it's on.
How do you fit westworld into harmon's cycle?
Oh man. Good question. That'd be fun to examine.
no entiendo pones el titulo en castellano si el resto del video esta en ingles y sin los correspondientes subtitulos...
Can you do one for bravest warriors and how the channel lost a lot of their subscribers because they changed to a different web site
I don't even know what Bravest Warriors is. What is that? UA-cam channel?
There's definitely some sort of ego kicks to the show, like someone feel smarter after watching it. This is certainly the origin of the copypasta
Harmon didn’t come up with that, it’s just the hero’s journey.
To be fair...
To be faiiiirrr (in English accent )
Dead meme
Although he talks about it a lot, Harmon didn’t invent that story structure, it’s Joseph Campbell’s
For sure. Harmon took Campbell's and retooled it slightly. But yes, he didn't invent it.
I learned that circle shit in first grade...
But Dan did not invent the story wheel, it is known as the “hero’s journey,” and has existed since ancient times.
Totally, he took it and adapted it into his own thing. But yeah, he didn't invent it.
Dude, it's the Hero's journey...
Where is Joseph Campbell?
Dan didn’t theorize the circle, originally I learned it in 7th grade English.
2 brothers in a van and then a merotor hits the they ran from giant cat monsters
A Mexican armada shows up
Best anime ever
No. Not even close.
Its nowhere near Bojack's storywriting level, and that series is not suitable for everyone, either.
When a movie or a series got fan base then it's gonna starts to die
Sorry, ETE, this was a disappointing essay in comparison to your others.
Literally, this video could have been done about any television series and is definitely your most objective project.

Sorry you didn't like the essay. I'll continue trying to impress you and others.
lol but fr tho more 5 minute soundtrack - much love
Uhg There are so many interesting ideas in this show just the annoying stuttery voice acting makes it practically unwatchable for me.
Bit why does season 3 suck?
#FromFD
#FromFD thanks for the video! ;)
3:11 I can't be the only one that thought of Greendale's "E Pluribus Anus" flag
Haha
When will Rick and Morty die like South Park and family guy and the Simpsons?
MaMiMuMa they used to be funny back 90s and 2000s
oh god. Incoming iq jokes
He listened in creative writing shop!!! 3:09 is not an original format, nuclear facepalm, nothing original only a satirical Doc and Marty in predictable scenes appealing to the pop counter cultures. Like GoT, i'll skip this fad.
What’s a good show similar to R&M?
It’s currently in decline in my opinion. Still good just... not the same.

Most great comedy shows have some dumb jokes in there. It's rare a comedy has nothing but great smart jokes.
Too late... They’re already here. :/ At least you were trying to be the voice of reason.
what's wrong with the third season?
cabshdun I
#FromFD 👾
omg thats why season 3 wasn't as good, there was mostly a stories, not a and b stories.
Ironic: Rixty Minutes is their shittiest episode.
I have mixed feelings for this show. The writing is brilliant, as explained in this video. But the character designs and art style are really... plain and visually unappealing. The characters are mostly 2 dimensional and with no redeemable qualities. I watch and enjoy the show, but I definitely do not "love" it.
Sherif Adel the writing is not brilliant it is overrated edgy atheist reddit trash
One word:
Memes
1st season was awesome and I would have been happy if it would have been just 1 season of Rick and Morty. 2nd season was good, not as good as the 1st but good. Show kinda lost it's edge there. Still, I would have been kinda satisfied with the 2nd seasons ending. Third season was a fucking turd!
I thought overall S3 was the weakest, but it still had some single episodes that were fantastic!
Yeah, Ricklantis Mixup might be the best episode of the entire series.
Are you the NerdWriter??? You're basically the same guy with rather similar voices.
Compliment taken.
@@EntertainTheElk It is indeed a compliment, both you guys make awesome videos! Subscribed to both of your channels! Great work!
To be fair
Guys, learn to ignore the internet memes and appreciate the show. As much of a joke as it's fanbase has become, people seem to be forgetting that the show actually is really good.
Arcadian Finally a voice of reason.
Arcadian the show itself is a fucking joke, it's just as bad as the fanshits
Dick Savage Fuck off.
The day rick and morty died: Interdimensional cable 2
Yeah, that's probably my least favorite.
Dang, you do have to be smart to understand this show. The memes were true.
Update: This video is outdated. Season 7 isn't doing so good
More like “Why is Rick and Morty successful?”
The interdemensional cable episodes suck and are boring imo
was*
So basically all the good parts of Rick and Morty are thanks to Justin Roiland and all the worst, most tedious parts are thanks to Dan Harmon. Got it.
Wubba Luba dub dub!!!!!!!!!!

why does garbage exist
