    Finally, a recent video about Rick & Morty that isn't bitching about how "toxic" its fan base is.

    • @BuddhaBot

      Jay Doubleyou Woah, where did you hear about incest porn? That's a big allegation to be throwing around as second hand gossip. You gotta give me more than just "so I heard" also, music sketches? Like ... innnn the porn? What?
      That aside, I hear all the complaints "fans think they're intellectual, shout pickle Rick and Oh the mcdonalds thing!" And I'm like ... so? They're doofuses, who cares? They don't represent an entire fandom. If they did, well, there's a looooot of rick & morty fans so by that logic this country should already be set on fire while screams of agony get drowned out to a bunch of "wubbalubbadubdubb".
      And that McDonald's thing was a mess on so many levels.

      Jay Doubleyou You won't google something you hold as a reason to hate something? Also, you still didn't explain what the music stuff is. Also also, saying a minority of a fanbase is toxic does Not mean the fan base as a whole is toxic. That's just not how math works.

      He used to write about it a lot on the old Channel 101 forums.
      Someone transcribed some of Dan's comments to a Wiki here:
      channel101.wikia.com/wiki/Story_Structure_105:_How_TV_is_Different
      But it's missing the rest of the comments where they talk in depth about Campbell and other writers.

    More than creative "balance" I'd call it something like creative tug-of-war or maybe even creative restrain.
    I have the feeling that Dan Harmon's most difficult job is trying to find the right balance between restraining Justin Roiland and letting "creativity" run free. I believe that if Dan wouldn't control Justin the series would devolve into 25 minutes of testicles, gore and deformities with some story elements occasionally sprinkled around. Something similar to Justin's Back to the Future "parody"

    • @EntertainTheElk

      Yeah totally agree. If Dan Harmon wasn't there to structure the plot lines and keep Roiland on track, it would all just be meaningless madness.

    I feel like I had a different experience when I started watching the show because I was unaware of it and the fan base so I was able to form my own opinions. When something tends to be popular and someone does not enjoy it they tend to despise it more than they would if they weren’t exposed to it from such a large and loud fan base

    Harmon didn't invent story structure. I like the guy but good lord the circle jerking over her story circle is ridiculous. It's not groundbreaking to anyone that knows anything about the history of literature. Character goes out to get or do something, struggles, succeeds, is better from the experience. That's literally the most basic aspect of nearly any story and has been forever.

    • @somedude2278
      @somedude2278 4 роки тому +2

      Because it’s so basic, it’s easy to shape it into the way a writer would want, making it easy to understand. Make it too complicated and it would only make the story a mess

    The show has to end before it goes to complete shit. Considering the fanbase, it may well already have. The creators seem very insightful on the topic of story, and I can't help but feel bad that the fanbase are a bunch of obnoxious, arrogant assholes who think they're better than everyone else. They say that the show is 'fundamental to understanding modern society,' but they also say that you have to know everything to even understand the show. Which is it? You can have one, but not both!

    Rick and Morty is a great show mainly because it's fresh and tries something new.
    So far I don't have to complain, I'm loving it, but let it enter South Park territory and then we'll start talking about how it stayed great or spiraled down to Oblivion like The Simpsons.

      5. Aqua Teen Hunger Force

      Fair enough! I would categorize my top 5 lists. I.e Best tv dramas, best British sitcoms, best animated comedies etc (After all how can you compare the simpsons to game of thrones?).
      So my top 5 animated sitcoms:
      1. Simpsons
      2. Rick and Morty
      3. South Park
      Then to a much lesser extent
      4. American Dad
      5. Family guy
      Though it's hard to argue rick and morty is one of the best shows ever made, I'd say it's one of the best in it's genre.
      I'm intrigued by your list though... will look into them.

    • @Snax000

      ThisIs ReadyMade To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
      And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

    Harmon's cycle is the Cosmogonic cycle first described by Joseph Campbell in The Hero With a Thousand Faces in 1949. It is the standard form of myth and story throughout human history. It predates Harmon by many millennia. It's used in The Bible, The Upanishads, Greek Myths, folklore, and literature. You'll find it in Harry Potter, The Lord of The Rings, and even in comedies like Tootsie and Animal House. Harmon is no innovator in this sense.

    • @EntertainTheElk
      @EntertainTheElk  7 років тому

      True. But Harmon took the structure and modified it for television.

    • @Flatunello
      @Flatunello 7 років тому +1

      Everyone modifies it for time constraints or story needs. No one uses it straight out of the box. Some stories have 150 story points, some 20, some 8. It just depends on the needs and the length. I'm just saying, it's not original.

    Holy crap, that's an awful audio commentary. They needed to lower the volume on the episode or raise their volume because it's so hard to understand them when they are speaking. It also doesn't help that half the voices in the show are the crew, and everyone was talking over one another. I think I heard six voices all talking and I wasn't sure which one I was supposed to listen to. Or maybe that was the whole point, just 23 minutes of confusion just because they could.

    Sorry, ETE, this was a disappointing essay in comparison to your others.
    Literally, this video could have been done about any television series and is definitely your most objective project.
    Rick & Morty haters (like me) are annoyed with the amount of obsession and fixation (like this video) on a show that just isn't that special.
    Like others have said, shows like Futurama, Dr. Who, and Star Trek all used the exact same science fiction tropes and gained a reputation in their dedicated fanbases, while this show became mainstream because of its easily digested content.
    Rick & Morty is stripped to A.D.D levels of joke delivery speed and a lot of fans have mistaken "random" for "creative" when it comes to the writing/improvization on the show.

    To everyone about to post a 'My IQ isn't high enough' comment, everyone else has already done it. And it wasn't even funny when they did it. Stop.
    Seriously tho Rick and Morty is a great show (first 2 seasons anyway) with inventive concepts, fun characters, clever humour and some genuinely emotionally resonant moments. Just a shame that the internet has to make an unfunny meme out of everything.

    I have mixed feelings for this show. The writing is brilliant, as explained in this video. But the character designs and art style are really... plain and visually unappealing. The characters are mostly 2 dimensional and with no redeemable qualities. I watch and enjoy the show, but I definitely do not "love" it.

    1st season was awesome and I would have been happy if it would have been just 1 season of Rick and Morty. 2nd season was good, not as good as the 1st but good. Show kinda lost it's edge there. Still, I would have been kinda satisfied with the 2nd seasons ending. Third season was a fucking turd!

      Entertain The Elk Thanks for the reply! I will admit that The Ricklantis Mixup and the pilot were good. The Ricklantis Mixup might actually be one of the top 3 Rick&Morty episodes. Aside from those, the season was just garbage that didn't feel like Rick&Morty. It felt like there was some kind of message behind all of it and there shouldn't be. You don't throw random testical monsters, out of nowhere, to someone's face to be political. It's either total chaos, or it's making a stand and seeing what Dan Harmon is, I think I have an idea where it comes from.

    • @EntertainTheElk
