I’m going to repeat what I’ve said before. Every time I hear about this incident I wonder, “What was the endgame!? How did they expect it to be received!?” Did they think the girls would laugh it off? Did they think that even if the girls complained, their complaints would be shrugged aside? Why even bring unsuspecting people into it? Since the name was a play on Power Rangers, why not make cardboard cut-outs of the villains from Power Rangers and have them get pooped on? How were they given the green light to do this? Did they get the green light to do this, or were the people running the show told, “Hey, we’re going to need some girls to stand close to us, never mind why,” and they just went with it with no questions asked? There are so many questions. This was a fail on every level.
The segment about it on The Daily Show is disturbing too because Jon Stewart reported that 13/14-year old girls got pooped on and someone in the audience actually sounded excited by that. That audience member should probably be on some kind of watchlist. :-/

Well, their sister company Nickelodeon had an association with Dan Schneider (who let's just say was likely involved in a lot of dodgy shit) and that's before we even get into Summer Redstone (the former Owner/Chairman of Viacom, which owned MTV) and Les Moonves (former head of CBS, another sister company of MTV)...
Anyway, with all the scandals that Viacom/CBS/Paramount Global has gone through over the years. I'm surprised they haven't suffered the same fate as Weinstein did.

  • @Lynn17
    @Lynn17 9 місяців тому +125

I'm glad they took this to court and kept the focus on the girls who were done dirty instead of the perps going "we're sorry, we'll do better, we're nice people really" and people giving them unwarranted attention by calling them out via hashtag like we'd do today. Those sickos didn't deserve the attention and still don't, I'm all for this piece of media being lost.

In the defense of Beavis and Butthead it had a connection to music even if it was VERY minor, Beavis and Butthead would provide commentary on music videos as breaks during the show, wasn't much but at least they tried connecting it to music somehow, unlike everything on MTV now.

When I first read of this incident, my first and ONLY thought was this. If the Shower Rangers aren't registered and convicted sex offenders for this act, that would be a massive miscarriage of justice. Sure, it's one thing that the families got to sue MTV and this horrendous act was never aired (how would it?), but if they didn't track down the sickos behind this and put them away never to walk within 100 ft of a school ever again, then something is wrong. These were KIDS they performed on. I'm sure just mooning minors alone would lead to them having to knock on every door in the neighborhood. This wasn't simulated, it wasn't consensual, it wasn't on an adult, this was straight up a r*pe version of a Cleveland Steamer. ON KIDS! OH! Dressed UP as kids, too! The second they pulled their pants down, security should have hauled them away.

I'd (unfortunately) heard about this incident before but I somehow have never caught the fact that the girls involved were only FOURTEEN?? Like I swear I'd never heard that detail before and that really takes this to like a whole different level of disgust for me. It was already horrible but as a former fourteen year old girl I genuinely don't think I would've ever been able to mentally or emotionally recover from something this disgusting happening to me in public. Wherever those girls are I hope they're happy and thriving.
(Also idk if this bothered anybody else or if I'm just sensitive but that Brian Graden guy calling those girls "women" while talking about the lawsuit kind of pissed me off. He knows full well how old they were because there's no way he doesn't so the fact that he's trying to make it sound like this happened to like adults instead of children is also gross to me).

Target demo aside, I think they are honestly really lucky that the culture back then was a lot different and that people tolerated nonsense that should never be tolerated. Simple fact is no one deserves such a lewd act to happen to them and trying to make the "it’s just comedy" argument is so lame. Were the unsuspecting girls being defecated on laughing? Obviously not! If MTV wasn’t just a tax write off for Paramount it would have been out of business along time ago.

Dave Holmes, former MTV VJ was the voice-over guy for this pilot show, watching it on a monitor from the back room and making announcements. He told this story on a live podcast called Walking The Room many years ago that was the most epic poop story ever told. The "Shower Rangers" were supposed to fill their asses with water and then spray it out, hitting targets (in this case, a small campfire). But after they'd filled themselves up, some executive put their segment last, and the brand new host kept screwing up and doing retakes, so it took hours until their segment, and by that point it wasn't water any more. Everybody on staff who said "this is a great idea!" then said to the authorities "we didn't know this would happen, we'd never allow this to go on air". The girls were not deliberately placed there to get pooped on, they just were at the wrong place at the wrong time when the two guys fired at their target and missed wildly.

Nothing cannot describe the amount of discomfort I feel about this story. It’s hard for me to be truly disturbed from stories. But this just makes me want to forget this existed
I appreciated MTV for 2 things (Nirvana Unplugged & Beavis and Butt-Head). But this story makes me wish that MTV went out of business.
Finally, I’m an huge advocate of finding lost media, but this makes me hope no one touches it. And whoever finds it,
    Genuinely, FUCK YOU

That's disgusting. I mean I like some pretty weird stuff, but this would have made me turn the channel immediately and probably not turn back. Luckily, I stopped watching MTV a year or two before this happened anyway.

You'd have to Clockwork Orange my eyes open to get me to watch the actual act take place, but I'd love to see the crowd's reaction while it was going on. I'll tell ya, if I was in charge of picking the acts to perform, there's no way "Shower Rangers" would have got by me. I would have said, "Shower Rangers? I don't like the sound of that. I'm gonna pass on you and let the Scat Singing Brothers do their act instead. Oh sorry. That's Scat Flinging Brothers."

This was the era where MTV had underage teen girls grinding on 20 yr old + college guys and I won’t lie…. It was romanticized (especially by my peers) I’m elder millennial. This behavior was glamorized and was seen as “provocative” and “ risqué” at the time. This would never pass nowadays

I'd never heard of this incident before and when I saw the video thumbnail I assumed it had to be about animal poop, like maybe the act involved throwing horse manure at the audience which, while still gross and upsetting, I can see being someone's idea of a joke.
Oh boy was I naive 😩

I consider this cursed lost media because it's a piece that leaves you asking questions as to why it exists in the first place in order to be lost. Like, why the hell did they do this? What was the goal here, other than to be weird and disgusting? There's so many questions to ask but none can be answered. WTF was this

Yeah, this deserves to stay lost. Seeing how the victims involved were minors at the time, and they were bullied because of the incident, I don't think it would be wise to show it.
However, I dunno if MTV is really responsible, as they may have not known what would really go down (remember, people can still lie about things, and chances are the Shower Rangers may have kept their second act a secret, even from the higher ups, and not have told them they were going to do such a thing).

In professional darts players usually get a nickname, either chosen by themselves or given to them by a commentator. The Irish player Steve Lennon switched his name a few years ago and now he's known as "Scuba Steve". Coincidence? Absolutely! Enough to start a conspiracy about the involvement of the PDC in this show? Absolutely!
