When you said you were sent the camera from the company, I was like "oh no not another so called review". But I was wrong. This is a highly intelligent, balanced, and thorough review. Just as there is no one size fits all training plan, there is no camera that fits all use cases. You somehow are able to bring out the camera's beauty by bringing out it limitations, and then showing how best to use the camera to achieve different goals. It is as if I was fed wisdom - not just knowledge - that could only be accrued from a wealth of experience and suite of tools that I do not have the luxury to acquire. Thanks for helping me make my decision Jeff!
I agree with you about the resolution; I have the insta360 one x and then moved to the one R. But I haven't bought the one x2 because all three have the same 5.7k and frame rates. The insta360 one R2, or X3 will need to address this and give us all the bump in resolution we've all been craving. A sunny day tip: rotate the pole in your hand to roughly align an edge with the sun - If you can see it's shadow on the ground this can help with the alignment, but it doesn't have to be uper accurate. This allows both front and back sensors to expose evenly = better image stitching. As a self-confessed geek, I love the opportunity re-framing brings. It has opened the door to so much more possibilities and shots that a gopro simply wouldn't be capable of doing. I also like the ability to be in the shot, as a post to outside shooting other people having fun! The fact that you don't need to worry about maintaining the shot, means you can get on with what you're there to do - action sports first, then put your directors hat on later 😉 This last point is a big reason why I sold my gopros and took a deep dive into the world of 360. A 360 camera allows the opportunity to hand off the camera to someone else in your group, even if they are a novice at filming. I have taken my 360 cameras skiing, and there's simply night and day difference, compared to the hours of footage from my gopros that have ended up on the cutting room floor. A 360 camera is kick-ass technology, which is slowly getting better - bring it on I say!

Wow this is the most useful video I’ve ever watched about the ONE X2! Thanks for putting so much thought, detail and organization into this video! I totally agree with your comparison between 360 footage and drone footage. That both can add a great deal of visual interest and unique perspective to a video, as long as they’re used sparingly.
This was one of, no, it is the best review of a camera like this I have seen. Thank you for all the effort. I'm thinking of using one of these to get some interesting shots of my racing.
i know this was technically a product review video, but you packed so much detail and information in, it almost felt like a tutorial haha -- thanks!! i love the idea of this camera and am constantly trying to brainstorm new and creative ways to film cross country horseback jumping... but haven't really figured out anything that's as safe + stable as a helmet cam.... the 360 cameras seem like they have potential tho!
My motorcycle bundle came with a helmet mount, obviously might need to be adapted for the surface type (3M adhesive) but the 360 can definitely go up top.
I own an insta 360 one x2 and agree 100 % with what you said. This is the best overview, and comparison video I've seen on the pros and cons of this type of camera. Great Job. 👍
Thank you Jeff. Spot on. I just bought my 2nd 360x2 after trashing the first one (Scratches and drowning). The Technology is awesome in all 360's. The challenge is for amateurs and newbies to understand the tools and use them. And your video is excellent for inspiring us! My main use is motor-trike pictures and skate-surfing, wakeboarding.
I've been wanting to add one of these to my kit for a while now for exactly the reasons you stated. Ridge walks, bushwacking anytime I don't have time to be knoodling with cameras.
I think you do a good job of explaining your logic and how this tool fits into your toolbox. The actual footage from the different cameras discussed really helps you to make your points.
I don't do any filming or even much photography, but it's really nice to hear the things you are thinking about when putting your productions together. Your films clearly show the thought and care you put into them. Definitely looking forward to the Namibia video!
About 35 years ago i shot film in 16mm, and could not imagine having equipment like this. That 360 camera is just wonderful, you have great artistry in how you use it and in the days I was a runner I could not imagine running with a selfie stick, but it looks like a number of your fellow runners do this and do it well. The editing is pretty exciting as well and a lot of work but with great results...
I have used the 360 for several years now and learned everything you say here the hard way. I wish I could have watched this two years ago. You pretty much nailed it, excellent review. Your pros and cons are exactly what I have found and I have come to the same conclusion that it adds perspective but should be used in moderation. I have yet to find any software that can remove all the fisheye distortion correctly in an Insta360 video, there is no equivalent of linear mode in a gopro. I think if they included that option in the post processing it would increase the usability dramatically. Although resolution would still be limited.
Really fantastic and engaging overview! I do love the inclusion of the 360 footage in your films, it almost feels like we are running along with you. It's really interesting to hear the limitations and process
I bought a 360 cam a while back but could never get used to the work flow of having to reframe when I got home vs doing the planning of a shot in real-time with a gopro. Seeing your video inspires me to want to bust it out again and give it another try!
Great review Jeff. I found immediate that the X2, should not be used as your main vlogging camera. I made the mistake of taking one continuous clip that was about 50 mins long. Then once you import it into the insta360 software, it does not provide enough tools to split the videos into multiple clips which I find very strange and disappointing. And as you mentioned it'll also take a very long time to process and export.
I owned a GoPro. My plan was to film my training and family activities, maybe not to put on UA-cam for monetization. After a couple of months I realized that the most important skill to deliver good looking videos is post production, of course the narrative and storytelling is even more important. Cameras and lenses are just tools for a brilliant film maker. The interesting part of this video was hearing you talk about how you use the different cameras and how you plan your films. VERY curious what you think now of the X3 that seems to have addressed pretty much all of the weaknesses of the X2 you cover here. Keep up the great work! Just starting to research equipment like this that will allow me to be in the action after years of using a traditional DSLR to capture race photos from the sidelines. Mahalo for all your insight and hard work!

Excellent review of the One X2. I was just weighing the pros, cons and use cases of bringing the One X2 along with my Hero 10 on my next trip. I want to reduce my gear load and was thinking of the scenarios where one would be better than the other. Your video helped me organize my thoughts. The point you made about the added processing required by the One X2 is important and something I forgot to consider. So far, I've only used my One X2 for short, long weekend trips so the added step of rendering files in Insta360 Studio hasn't been too onerous. But for a 7+ day trip in a faraway location (where I'm more likely to record more content) that intermediate processing step will become painful if I use the OneX2 as my primary camera.
@@JeffPelletier Mexico City, hopefully. We've had 2 trips cancelled by the pandemic so far. Not wanting it to be 3 but who knows? BTW I'm in the Vancouver area which is I guess where you're located as well? I'm guessing that because of your mention of Grouse Mtn in your video.
Great review. I encountered the same issues with the insta 306 and I thought perhaps I was misusing the software. Thanks for doing this. The video quality from the GoPro is just superior because of it being 4k.
You are probably right in stating that the One X2 is not the Swiss army knife of photography. It's just another useful tool to use when appropriate. I don't use mine as much as my GoPro Hero 10.
The best use for me, is to put the camera on a tripod in the middle of my local skatepark (it's a very small park), and then later review what I'm doing wrong, or what needs improvement. The park is frequently empty, so I can get away with not worrying about someone knocking it over.
the appeal to me is, I am usually alone, flying remote rc planes, so the ability to come back and track the plane from tripod footage versus the fisheye gopro view seems worth a look.
I agree with your comments about drones. I love to see drone footage, but I have never been convinced to buy one or hire one. I also think that a 360 camera is much the same. It's great but, it can be used too much.
I’ve had the X2 for about 3 months, and only taken one 20 second video of me walking across a carpark to try out the camera view controls, and turning it into a Tiny Planet ending. I need to get out more, as it’s gathering as much dust as my GoPro Hero 5 Black.
I just got older 360 camera but not software. I had a Go-Pro but I got stolen while I was at my mother's funeral! (Really fun coming home from moms funeral finding place smashed into an ransacked, an pages of lists of stolen items!),(they didn't want too steal my boat or outboard, so they cut up all the fuel lines!) So, I need too buy replacements now, an your video helped me! I appreciate it, Thanks! I passed your video on too my outdoor appreciate neighbor, an I don't usually do that! You had too impress me, an you did!
I use it quite often as my primary action camera. Probably 75% of the footage from my Rim to the Unknown adventure was shot with it. I agree close up shots are much better with somthing like a gopro or sony cam but the 360 camera can take some amazing shots and could be used solely if you don't mind the quality of it.
Great analysis, I just purchased and started using my one X2. I’ve always done everything with my GoPro and while our travel videos have done well with GoPro alone, we felt we should add another element to our videos to stand apart from the traditional DRONE-GoPro-Mirrorless/Full frame cam. I agree with you on the work load, just trying to piece together our current Puerto Rico trip has definitely added another step in our production which would lead to delays in completing videos. I’ll be taking your advise and choosing carefully where and when I use the 360 cam so that I can maximize post production otherwise my videos will never make it on to UA-cam 🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣 thanks for the tip!
Salut Jeff! I have to shoot a 360 degrees video this summer, flying my M3 over the islands of Sorel, Qc. - this video will be showased to be watched with Oculus Quest googles (or equivalent). 360 degrees FOV is not necessary, but at least 270 degrees FOV will be. I planned to attach the Insta 360 ONE X2 to the bottom of the drone, using a DJI Mount piece. But, before that, I did some tests on the ground and was unimpressed with the resolution of the Insta although it was a 5.7K. Of course the Mavic 3's camera is a lot better, I didn't expect to get a matching result, but I was surprised that the image was low-res and also that the exposure was a big puzzle to solve. Your vid showed me why the 5,7K was so "ordinary" after post editing. Thanks a lot for helping me understand this. Now I'm not sure which way the real shooting will go from now. Attach a GoPro instead of the Insta ? (we need a little FPV sensation) or maybe just use the Hasselblad on the M3... Or tell my client to hire a pro team equipped with better cameras. Thanks again. You definitively pinpointed the weak spot in this project.
Oh my goodness don’t even get me started on the Robertson. Superior in every single way. Blows my mind we haven’t adopted it as the standard screw drive across America yet.
well said. i do hope the next One X3 will have a higher resolution sensor... I was quite disappointed when they released the X2 with the same resolution as the OG One X
I needed this video, very honest review. All the other reviews are the same, one thing I would like to know, is the pole awkward to hold? Does it become awkward or uncomfortable overtime?
Great review! I've really been looking at getting one but just wasn't sure, but with my kind of content on a kayak I think I could really benefit from it thanks for sharing you take on it!
You know what’s best about it? The versatility. You can record ONE pov and turn it into numerous different camera angles. Numerous different playback styles. It’s SO versatile.
Thank you Jeff, I have the same experience as you but did went away from my insta360 one X in favor for the GoProMax, mostly because the red dot issue on the insta camera's (lenses at the same position behind each other). And I like the proTune options of the Max. What I am missing is the unbelievable great Insta studio options in the GoPro software. So sometimes a still use the insta studio software to track my shot (not available in GoPro software). Next I also combine the camera range you use to tell my Mountainbike stories. Thanks and keep up with your great interesting video stories!
Thanks for the video. I think I am going to purchase the Insta360 x2 for a trip to the Bahamas and Atlantis water park. Just curious, where were you in the scene where you two are running a very high, very narrow ridgeline?
It would be interesting to see if one could use a One X2 in a dramatic setting, raising and lowering the camera along with some zoom. It might be that a secondary character is holding and operating the X2.
If someone was just going to have one camera, for filming runs and stuff (with a stick) which would you recommend between the one x2 or the hero 10? I'm a total novice to cameras and video editing wanting to get shots of myself running on and off trails, sometimes with a selfie stick sometimes mounted on me. Thanks!
Hey Stephen, they’re both great options. For me I’d lean towards the GoPro if I could only have one, but I know lots of people who shoot just for fun using only a 360 camera.
Same with me. But I use the One X2 as action cam on the bicycle and as "poor man's drone". I just got the new 3m selfie stick that works great as "drone" including in a lot of situations where a real drone is not allowed. Mounted on the bike I also get the hands free shots, so so only other camera I need it my GH5.
Hey Jeff, Great perspective on using the One X2 like another lens on a DSLR. That hadn't occurred to me. I've got their Go 2 and am struggling with something you mentioned briefly in post production using their software, and this will apply to the One X2 as well. Their app on the iphone or iPad is much more functional than the Mac version, so I'd rather edit with it on my iPad. But once their files are downloaded to a hard drive or cloud account, I don't see any way to get them back into the iPhone or iPad based editing software. Any thoughts on a solution here? Thanks again for your great, thoughtful commentary.
I bought both One X2 and Go 2 and I sold the Go2 and kept the One X2. I like to use the One X2 video to do smooth 360 rotation, vertical roll, world, sphere, and when you merge from each of these features onto a normal view it creates a great transition that you can't do from two normal videos.
I haven’t used their software but have used many other video editing tools, so I have two ways that might work for you: 1) if you can copy your file to your iCloud account, you can then access it on your Apple device via the iOS “Files” folder app. Most of my apps can then open/save files to that location. 2) Otherwise, I use a small “Lexar” microSD card reader that has the Apple “Lightning” interface and the Lexar app to copy files back and forth to my iPhone’s Photo app. Again these two methods work for all my transfer needs. If you need more details, just ask.
Great info! I've had various Gopros in the past and have the Insta360 Go 2 just because it's super lightweight and good for mounting on RC. I've used the Go 2 for running as well and think it's good enough, but wind noise is a real problem. Been curious about the "real" Insta360 cameras, but not convinced because of the additional work at post and too wide a view for generic filming. Thanks for cementing these concerns, now I know it's not for me. Do love the shots you use it for and I am glad that you take the effort to use that speciality tool!
I have the Go2 also, was looking at this because I'd love a 360 camera but frankly it's got a really good field of view, up to 1440p, and the fact of how crazy small it is and easy to just pop on your chest with the necklace thing or on your hat with the clip. My main problem is battery life and heat. If you film in max resolution and fps in pro mode the most I got was a 6 min video before I guess it over heated cause it would stop recording and when re starting it would barely hit 1 min. I've now dropped the resolution to 1080p because of space issues and TikTok is only 1080 or less and won't let you post anything higher. I've also made sure to shoot in short burst rather than filming everything.
Very nice review of how the One X2 fits into a kit of multiple cameras to keep the shots interesting and the story flowing. My two cents: 1. OMG at 11:49 did you set one lens directly on a table!? Do not do that!! I consider the lenses to be like the eyes of a baby. Be insanely careful with them. Don't want to be that careful? Insta360 sells a snap on lens protector. I use it but it does increase lens flare and haze a bit under certain conditions. They used to make lens protectors that you had to peel and stick on I never used them. 2. I use the camera for fully immersive 360 videos best viewed using a VR headset. And the resolution there is limiting as well. I'd love to shoot in 8K instead, but the "prosumer" 8K cameras still have issues. 3. If you get tired of holding the camera, I've gone bicycling and kayaking by lashing or zip-tieing the selfie stick to my backpack (or put it fully inside just sticking out the top and zip up around it). 4. Please reread #1! Cheers.
Great review, your long wait shows in your research and working knowledge of the camera and workflow. I still have the OneX and on the fence because the OneX 2 was released in 2020 so we are likely going to see another new OneX version in 2022 so the $450 investment is something I am considering for the next version. The OneX is good enough for now IMHO.
Great review with good examples on its benefits and disadvantages. 🙌 Almost forgot to ask, but can someone let me know how long the battery last while filming with it ?
Thanks! It will depend on whether you’re filming the entire time it’s on, and at what frame rate. Insta360 claims, “one fully charged battery can continuously shoot for roughly 80 minutes at 5.7K@30fps.”
@@JeffPelletier thanks for the update. I definitely could see getting the Insta360 One X2 … just need to convince my wife that I need another camera tool 🙃
Not sure why so many creators are comparing the One X2 against the Hero… it’s apples and oranges and seems like Insta360 is manipulating the reviews by promoting this type of comparison. Why not review the pros/cons of the One X2 vs the GoPro Max so we are comparing 360 cameras head to head instead?
It’s a good question, although wasn’t my goal with this review. There are plenty of comparisons between the two cameras. My pros/cons list in this video and my proposed approach to using 360 footage would apply to either camera - they’re very similar in many ways. I compare it to the GoPro because that’s my primary action camera.
Do you think you could get away with using only this and an iPhone 12 Pro for Vlog portions, as a travel camera ? Thinking of picking it up for a trip to iceland and think the 360 and being able to reframe later would be super beneficial.
I think that space on an iPhone would be a limitation for me personally, since you can’t swap memory cards like on a GoPro. But as long as you have a way to transfer footage then I don’t see why not.
It doesn’t perform very well in dark environments at all. Then again, neither does a GoPro. The sensors are just too small in these little action cameras. There is a noise reduction feature though in the Insta360 app that works pretty well.

On scratching the lenses, the lens protectors available for the One X2 really are a good plan, if you want to extend the life of the camera.
Good tip! I’m probably a prime candidate for those 😂
Great video, exactly what I was looking for.
i don't no how to use my new gopro8 but recently i was told i should get rid of it and get the x2 thank yu for your informative show.
You are probably right in stating that the One X2 is not the Swiss army knife of photography. It's just another useful tool to use when appropriate. I don't use mine as much as my GoPro Hero 10.
Really good review man
The best use for me, is to put the camera on a tripod in the middle of my local skatepark (it's a very small park), and then later review what I'm doing wrong, or what needs improvement.
Wonderful review! Love it and subscribed.
Great comparison! Thanks for the info, it’s one I have been considering in addition to GoPro. Looking forward to Namibia series!
Good video. Thanks. Wonder how the x3 is much gooder or not
Excellent and honest review. Thank you very much!
Awesome, glad you found it helpful!
When you export from your insta360 app do you notice a drop in quality?
Cool video. I just bought this camera a week or so back. Liking it a lot so far.
The folks in Milton Ontario are glad you like the best screw driver made...
well said. i do hope the next One X3 will have a higher resolution sensor... I was quite disappointed when they released the X2 with the same resolution as the OG One X
I needed this video, very honest review. All the other reviews are the same, one thing I would like to know, is the pole awkward to hold? Does it become awkward or uncomfortable overtime?
It’s actually quite well designed and very light weight. They did a great job with it.
Great review! I've really been looking at getting one but just wasn't sure, but with my kind of content on a kayak I think I could really benefit from it thanks for sharing you take on it!
Yes! It would be great for on a Kayak. I used it recently while kayaking in Namibia and it was lots of fun for that.
You know what’s best about it? The versatility. You can record ONE pov and turn it into numerous different camera angles. Numerous different playback styles. It’s SO versatile.
Very good instructional video.
Great video, I really want to pick up this camera but trying to hold out for the X3
Good review!
Thanks for the video. I think I am going to purchase the Insta360 x2 for a trip to the Bahamas and Atlantis water park. Just curious, where were you in the scene where you two are running a very high, very narrow ridgeline?
excellent video..very well explained pros and cons... Subscribed
Loving your videos
Thanks for the informative comparison to the gopro. How in the world do you convince this many people to go on those crazy hikes, jogs, runs with you?
😂
Great video thank you 🙂👍🙏 and stunning scenery
Yeah I have the insta360 One X2 and get amazing shots, but I agree it’s just one of many tools to utilize sparingly to help tell your story.
Great review and insights. Gracias.
Hi, is the Insta X2 compatible with the Huawei P20 Pro please?
@@LeeVideo May I ask how you went about selling your Go2? I'd like to do the same as you did.
@@bobkantor4695 I put it on eBay. Sold for a little less than the purchase price, but it's OK.

I've also made sure to shoot in short burst rather than filming everything.
nice review
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, I have a GoPro8, need to buy a 360 camera, would you recommend gopro max or insta 360 x2?
I don’t have much experience with the GoPro Max, but most people seem to prefer the Insta360 One X2 because of its smaller size and weight.
I don't like that fishbowl look, but man I really want that stick delete effect
360 in moderation like a drone is the perfect comment.
Great review with good examples on its benefits and disadvantages. 🙌
Almost forgot to ask, but can someone let me know how long the battery last while filming with it ?
Good explanation
Finally!!!! Someone who gets it! 360 video looks ok, but zoom in or crop / reframe and it looks ghastly! Such a shame as it's an awesome camera.
Great explanation - much appreciated.
Hi! I believe the new Insta360 ONE RS 1-inch will surely improve the lower res shots you get with the One X2.
It should be a huge improvement, both in resolution and image quality! Looking forward to getting my hands on one.
@@JeffPelletier That makes us 2, actually :-)
Thank you very very helpful.

This video left me thinking, why is a professional videographer reviewing a consumer product?
Do you think you could get away with using only this and an iPhone 12 Pro for Vlog portions, as a travel camera ? Thinking of picking it up for a trip to iceland and think the 360 and being able to reframe later would be super beneficial.
I think that space on an iPhone would be a limitation for me personally, since you can’t swap memory cards like on a GoPro. But as long as you have a way to transfer footage then I don’t see why not.
The future of the video !! The video looks superb. How about in the darkness ?
It doesn’t perform very well in dark environments at all. Then again, neither does a GoPro. The sensors are just too small in these little action cameras. There is a noise reduction feature though in the Insta360 app that works pretty well.
@@JeffPelletier Thanks a heap ! I really need in the darkness as well... maybe the 3rd version... waiting for it.
