    sorry I missed this I'd set the reminder as well. Neat mod. As an aside one 'the' best Dremel bits I've bought is the disc cutting kit. It lets you cut out in straight lines and it'd be ideal for cutting that centre section out. It's about $20+ but it's super useful, cut screws off etc. And one of the best uses is to cut a slot in busted hex screws, lets you then use a flat head screwdriver to remove them.

    That is a very clever idea!! 👍👍😎
    I share the concern of others... The stress factor on the Skidplate - over the LONG run. Again, great idea....
    The only thing I would do differently is, first - use a Two-Part Epoxy instead of Shoe Goo. I wouldn't want anything flexible holding on a major structural Center point.
    Using the STEEL plate was a great idea. I would have made it a little larger, since the Driveshafts are no longer in the way, you've got the clearance.
    And second, some sort of reinforcement on the top, around the TRANSFER CASE. One could even replace the Stock Plastic Transfer Case, with one of the METAL ones, sold on EvilBay, fairly cheap. Most of those even have FLAT BOTTOMS!!
    The big difference is that many of the Aftermarket ones have a 1:1 Gear Ratio, instead of the 1.8:1 Ratio on the Redcat's. The mounting holes are in the SAME place! 👍 To compensate, go 2 teeth smaller on the Pinion Gear. As a plus, you'll have a little more top speed, without sacrificing low-end Torque!!! 😀
    I've been doing this for over 37 Years.... Like you, I can look at something, and see solutions. I HOPE that I can afford a Gen 8 someday, this will be my FIRST mod!
    Except for the Toy-Like BLACKED OUT WINDOWS - Redcat hit a GRAND SLAM with this Rig!!! 👏👏👏👏👏🍺🍺

      😁👍 Hi The goop glue is 100 times stronger and will hold way better than epoxy done it all before ..once you use goop glue you hardly ever will use epoxy again. the center skid don't get weak at all you only take a small square out of it and the l ump is only a couple mm thick so the trans can sit down in it also the way the skid is screwed into the sides of the metal chassis rails you would have to twist the metal chassis for it to flex... No worries about cutting the lump off at all. You could have went all the way across the center with the steel plate but I did not want to I wanted a small section so it would not get hit as much no need for a larger one in my opinion your just making more surface area lower down to get scraped on stuff. 😁👍O and I been doing this for probably 37 years also and owned hundreds of RC's and did everything imaginable ...so trust me when I say this that cut hole on the bottom wont effect anything and with what i did it works 100 times better than stock. 👍 Thanks for stopping by.

    I’m sure it might work fine for a little bit. I’m not worried about the drive shafts. What worries me is the parts of the skid directly in front of and behind the transfer case along the centerline. They look really thin now, those 2 points and the battery tray are the only things keeping the skid from cracking in half.
    Have a feeling that one good roll over on the mountain would break the glue loose, bend the tray and crack the skid down the middle.
    Your links transfer a lot of shock directly to the skid. A lot of the time, only on one side when bouncing a bit or during a roll over.
    Would like to see a skid with raised mounts and a solid flat belly though. I’m sure someone will print one.

    • @ShenRC
      @ShenRC  6 років тому

      😃👍 Hi I tested it today and it works 100 times better than the stock skid..in my future video you can clearly see the bottom going over rocks smoothly no hang ups but the stock skid with the hump would have gotten the truck stuck and you would wobble back and forth with the tires spinning rocking until one grabs good enough and then pulls you over the rock. The case is strong and the middle section is also with hole it was strong and the way it's screwed into the chassis you would have to bend the metal chassis rails to make the skid plate bend...Also with that goop glue on the bottom of the metal and then beaded around the back hole cut out it will never fall off I done this before with using just goop glue on a metal skid and it don't come loose... another thing you could use one dab of the goop glue on the gearbox bottom so it glues down on the metal plate and that will make it secure even stronger...goop is awesome glue its strong but can be removed if needed. One last thing you can drill 4 small holes and use button top allen screws and hold it on the bottom of the skid plate but I like perfectly smooth method with the glue. No problems here ran it up some steep inclines bouncing the truck up and down on power no issues at all the slipper clutch will slip before it gets any pressure enough to break anything on it...That's why they used it on the new gen 8 model. WOW wrote a book..Hope this helps . 😉 look here for a photo showing me run it ua-cam.com/users/shenloncocommunity?disable_polymer=1

      I am sure for your application you understand what will work and what won’t.
      My point made in the original comment is this does weaken the skid. With or without metal and glue. That is important to know for some.
      In my neck of the rocks, that skid’s days would be numbered.
      Good job and good luck. Most of all. Happy Crawling.

    durn nitofukashun junk! (lmao) couldn't tell if you'd put clear hard plastic skid rails to the bottoms of the frame rails or no (like vacu-form package material or similar). might help slip over stuff without scratching paint off the metal. trans raised/covered looks good, a little black paint it'd look like it grew there.

    Nice mod. I cannot understand why anybody would make such a skid. When I think of my 1/14 Thunder Tiger Kaiser I could kick someones ass. The hump on the Kaiser is superhuge.

      😁👍 I hear ya that's why I did anything I could to get that darn hump off the bottom it ruined everything about the truck...don't know who the hell works at redcat but If i was helping for the design it surely would not have had that lump hanging down on the bottom!

    Another awesome vid Steve, great updates...you have some great ideas...you very adventurous though with your new gen8 but much better...one question, did I hear right you don't run your trucks on lipo batteries.

      😎👍COOL! thanks for the nice comment. I mostly use 6 cell Nim packs in my crawlers only sometimes I try my lipos ..don't know why maybe i should run the lipos more often.

    Great video but as someone pointed out I’d also worry about the stress put on the truck at that point and also the fact you raised the transfer case and changed the drive shaft angles would that also put extra stress on the shafts?

    • @ShenRC
      @ShenRC  6 років тому

      😁 Hi the center section was strong with the hole in it and when you put the center skid on it makes it even stronger..also it don't flex because it's screwed into the chassis on each side and you need to twist and bend the chassis sides to make it flex so that wont happen. The shaft angles hardly change that much it the center gear box is only lifted up a few mm no worries here. Thank you

      😁 I dd not remove it because I don't know how to drive I removed it because It makes it a better more capable truck. I always try and improve my RC cars by modifying them with the stock parts to make them work better without spending a lot of $ on upgrade parts. Thanks for watching.

    All this for really nothing, I've never been hung up or unable to climb something because of the hump everyone freaks out about. If you get the gen8 you won't ever notice the hump and you will never say "man I could climb this but that hump" sorry I wouldn't hack away at my nice gen8 for nothing.

    • @ShenRC
      @ShenRC  5 років тому

      Sorry to say if you turn your truck over and the hump on the skid has hardly any scratches on it then your never pushing your truck to t's limits so you won't need to take the lump off or buy a after market flat skid for your gen 8 because your not running it hard, It runs much better flat on the bottom. this is why after market companies are now making flat skid plates for the Gen 8, Are you going on all the other guy's that made them flat or printed 3D flat skids or purchased flat after market skids and also ragging on them telling all them they are wrong also?

  • @thomasgross8289
    @thomasgross8289 6 років тому

    All Redcat did is trade one hang up, the pumpkins, for another, the skid plate. You would think they learned their lesson.
    That said I think if you used styrene to cover the hole you could build a much stronger plate and the plastic cement would make a near 100% bond.

    • @ShenRC
      @ShenRC  6 років тому

      😁 Yep for sure... this method is much better than using styrene plastic... The hole cut out don't do nothing hardly because the lump is thin material and the skid is screwed into the metal frame rails and you would have to twist them to make it bend. I went with the thin steel method for most ground clearance and smoothness...I done this before on many RC's and that goop glue it don't come off unless you manually take it off with tools and that metal skid will bend like a pretzel when you try and get it off because that goop glue is like one of the best glues you can use on most anything.epoxy and all those other glues are garbage compared to the goop brand glue I tried them all and I mostly always use goop.😁👍 Tried true and tested! Thanks for watching.
