I lucked out! Public property. This hike went through a really nice forest along a rocky outcrop that is a public park. I met journalist Kurt Bresswein at the trailhead and we hiked about a mile to the summit. We passed a few areas along the trail that showed some mining / digging took place on the hill many years ago. It was unclear to me whether or not this was mining for a mineral like iron ore or simply harvesting large rocks like for making grist stones. At the summit was a metal sign congratulating hikers for reaching the high point. There was a dead Ash tree that was by far the “tallest tree” at the summit but the Emerald Ash borer has made it unsafe to climb. I picked out a Basswood tree instead. This was my first Basswood climb, ever. This tree is prized by wood carvers (like making decoys for hunting) as it works very easily. I ascended and had a nice view of the valley. I could see the vivid red soil in the farmers fields. It was nice to have Kurt join me for this hike. All done with the entire southeastern corner of the state now!
